He Ended New York City's Insane Ban on Pinball
Austin Bragg and Meredith Bragg talk Remy, libertarian parodies, and their new indie film, Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game.
HD DownloadMost people have no idea that pinball was illegal in New York from the early 1940s until 1976, when a journalist named Roger Sharpe finally won his crusade against the city to free the flippers.
The story of that insane ban is the subject of the new movie Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game, which Richard Brody of The New Yorker called "better than all ten of the Best Picture nominees."
The film is written and directed by Austin Bragg and Meredith Bragg, longtime producers at Reason best known for collaborating with Remy on his massively popular song parodies, and for making "libertarian" versions of Star Trek, Star Wars, Game of Thrones, and other pop culture franchises. A production of MPI Original Films, Pinball is available for streaming on Apple TV, Google Play, Amazon Prime Video, and other platforms.
Nick Gillespie talked with the Bragg brothers about how they came to tell Roger Sharpe's story, what goes into making the perfect satire in an era when reality is far stranger than anything we can imagine, and the libertarian message of Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game.

As a child in New York City I played the pinball-loophole games by Chicago Coin, Bally, etc. that shared features with pinball games but lacked one detail or other that would've been necessary for them to be considered "pinball". Usually that meant the ball was injected onto the field by some means other than a plunger. I played actual pinball games when visiting places outside the city. My inquiry about the distinction was how I heard about the ban.
i get paid $550+ per day using my mobile in my part time. Last month i got my 4th paycheck of $17723 and i just do this work in my part time. its an easy and awesome home based job.

You mean NYC was once like River City? Were kids saying things like "So's your old man!" from playing these things?

The Police State ... "Ya know; It's for the children."
The power of an excuse.
Meredith is a guy? I thought it was Austin's wife!
Me too. I thought Meredith was that lady who'd been in a few of their videos a while back.
Wow, this guy must be a wizard or something.
I've always found it amusing that when pinball appears in movies, it's usually a sign of rebellion.
I rented and watched the movie on Amazon Prime. Very good movie! 5-stars. Great job guys. I grew up in the 70's playing pinball, and I had never heard of it being illegal. It was legal in the rural bible belt.
The ban was orchestrated by the conservative preacher in town. Eventually, Kevin Bacon moved there and showed all the other teens what they were missing. They rebelled, the preached saw the light, and then they all went to prom and played pinball till dawn. Unfortunately this was New York, so nobody lived happily ever after.
Never understood this ban on pinball. To me it is just an ordinary game, like many others we play in our childhood. My kids love different games though. They have recently found fnf sonic mods and spend the time in the company of their favorite cartoon heroes. On Sunday night they will have a small tournament with friends. But after they finish their homework!
