The Social Media Mob vs. the Novel
Are “extremely over-sensitive, Twitter activist people" ruining literature?
HD DownloadAlberto Gullaba Jr. is a first-generation college grad from a working-class background, who was set to publish his debut novel when his publisher made an eleventh-hour discovery that could have only happened in the age of remote work: Though the book featured a black protagonist, Gullaba himself is Filipino.
"And the agent said, wait a minute, we thought you were black," recounts novelist and culture writer Kat Rosenfield. "And everything fell apart from there." After this discovery, not only was Gullaba asked to make changes, but the agent also hired a black "sensitivity reader" to give the book a careful read.* Though authors rarely talk about this process publicly, sensitivity reading is a growing phenomenon among publishers and writers fearful of social media mobs.
Rosenfield has firsthand experience with the process: She was once brought in to read the novel of a male author to verify that he had accurately portrayed the female experience.
"I had to imagine myself in the position of a much more sensitive, much more easily offended person, the kind of person who reads a book looking for something to get mad at," she says.
"It's sort of ironic that the idea behind sensitivity reading is that if you don't share certain identity characteristics with your characters, that it's morally wrong, essentially, to try to imagine their interior lives."
Rosenfield wrote about this phenomenon in "Sensitivity Readers Are the New Literary Gatekeepers," which appears in the August/September 2022 issue of Reason magazine.

Yes, they have and are ruining the novel. Also, the mainstream publishing houses are controlled by the worst woke NPC trash that can be found. So, they don't even consider new authors who are not some kind of protected minority, a woman, or queer or a tranny. If you are a white male and write a novel that doesn't involve celebrating your gayness or transgender status, then you better look at self publishing or writing something that will appeal to Christian publishers or some niche publisher in the right wing ghetto.
So, not only are they ensuring anything they publish is boring and has nothing that would offend the average lefty Twitter troll, they are making publishing decisions based on identity politics rather than quality. They start off generally only wanting to publish crap and then manage to make the crap they do publish even worse in the editing process.
This is how civilizations die.
This is how civilizations die.
Which is literally the point.
This is the natural evolution of a saturated and commoditized market. You have millions of these X Studies BA graduates and they all want to write the next Great Novel. But there are millions of them. And so they start looking for ways to differentiate themselves, and they form coalitions to promote one differentiation over another, and they have gate keepers to pick and choose who gets to claim a differentiator.
This isn't terribly different from the agriculture industry, which the scientific and industrial revolutions turned into an embarrassment of surplus. So how do these farmers and ranchers differentiate themselves? They promote differentiators to justify their product as more important than others- "Angus Beef", "Non-GMO", "No Antibiotics", "Free Range", "Organic".
The university system has created a similar embarrassment of surplus- not in food, but in generally unproductive 20-somethings harboring delusions of grandeur.
The university system has created a similar embarrassment of surplus- not in food, but in generally unproductive 20-somethings harboring delusions of grandeur.
Which is another way of saying "this is how civilizations die".
I actually have made $18k within a calendar month via working easy jobs from a laptop. As I had lost my last business, I was so upset and thank God I searched this simple job (eny-09) achieving this I'm ready to achieve thousand of dollars just from my home. All of you can certainly join this best job and could collect extra money on-line visiting this site.

But the money still comes from people who buy the novels (or the agricultural products). Don't buy their shit and go elsewhere. The reason non-GMO free range spring water exists is because idiots will buy it. The reason "I Have Two Tranny Daddies" exists is because people will buy it. You can't stop it, but no reason it has to be mainstream. And frankly, it's NOT mainstream. It's just shit that triggers culturewar outrage, so people think it's more common than it is.
I started a new novel yesterday. From a major publisher. By an author that does NOT match the "identity" of any of the three main characters. No problem. He's a damn good writer and so is in demand. And in the end, selling the book is the whole point.
Which means the writer is mediocre at best.
The pathetic clown above is their audience, and what they're trying to turn everyone into.
The source of money is books, but the MARKET is the giant pool of labor.
The parcel delivery industry is huge, and full of money. But the people participating in that market are legion. They are general laborers who are generally not differentiated. So what do they do? They Unionize. And now you have gate keepers who enforce certain market differentiators. A kid who works hard for low pay isn't enough to get key positions in unionized shops like DHL and UPS. No, the union ensures that Seniority is a key characteristic.
Nobody with brains enough to read uses twitter.
+1000
I do not have a twitter account, never once posted anything on it. And I never will.
Special.
Those with even lesser brains use Tik Tok. Seriously though a lot of us inadvertently use Twitter because so much online news post twitter links in their stories. See ENB's posts.
Second article on this today. Interesting.
Rosenfield has firsthand experience with the process: She was once brought in to read the novel of a male author to verify that he had accurately portrayed the female experience.
Yet there is no such thing as the female experience...
We've all known a few experienced females.
Thank God for them.
Yes, your mom comes to mind.
Another hot older chick is being prosecuted for making a north teenager’s dreams come true.
https://nypost.com/2022/06/30/heiress-charged-for-sex-with-14-year-old-4-times-in-one-day/
“An Australian horse heiress is saddled with charges after being accused of having sex with a 14-year-old boy four times in a single day.
Savannah Daisley, 45, faced Waverley Local Court in Sydney on Tuesday on child sex abuse allegations, with Judge Jaqueline Milledge denying her bail over the “quite disturbing” allegations.
The glamorous mother of two, who is the daughter of famed Aussie horse breeder Ross Daisley, strongly denies the accusations and intends to plead not guilty.
Cops claim an unbridled Daisley molested the minor four times before 5 p.m. on May 20 last year. It’s unclear whether the pair were known to each other prior to the alleged acts.”
One can choose to be female and get the full authentic female experience. The Sisterhood is about shared life experiences, and choosing to be female means you automatically get included into that Sisterhood.
I hope you’re joking
If you aren't reading self published authors - you are the problem.
>>publishers and writers fearful of social media mobs
should not be publishers or writers.
I would suggest they reduce their carbon footprint by ceasing to expel CO2 onto the air, gaia will thank them and so would i.
"...a much more sensitive, much more easily offended person, the kind of person who [in every aspect of their life is] looking for something to get mad at,"
FTFY
Find a different publisher. One is NOT required to use one of those fragile snowflake identitarian publishers. Yeah it sucks if it's young adult lit, because ALL of young adult lit has been taken over, but in terms of maintstream there are still plenty of options. No need to pander to the extreme left. Fuck them.
ALL of young adult lit has been taken over,
In a sane system, all of this should provide excellent market opportunities.
However, given how rapidly and pervasive this takeover is, one wonders if you started a new publishing company, that ESGs would then mandate that bookstores only carry books from authors that have gone through this rigorous DIE screenings.
Again, the game is chess, not checkers, and we've been playing checkers for far too long. Then suddenly you wake up and your entire industry has been "captured". Would have been nice to notice it and do something DURING the capture.
"Would have been nice to notice it and do something DURING the capture."

Take heed, friends.
Literacy rates have plummeted and nearly a quarter of the US has "low level" literacy, so ¯\(ツ)/¯
Only a few generations until "Anthem" becomes reality.
No way!
She was once brought in to read the novel of a male author to verify that he had accurately portrayed the female experience.
This is really going to impact the erotic fiction market.
Hey, as long as he can fake it ...
I certainly hope Reason had this article reviewed by a progressive sensitivity reader before posting it. Without a sensitivity reader, how do we know we're getting a full sensitivity reader experience?
are they taking volunteers for the Rosenfield Experience?
Yeah, my novels got rejected by the woke mob too for not being liberal enough. They were too controversial for the conservative literary agents too. So I had to self-publish on Amazon.

Sad activity at best. Read for entertainment or enlightenment, but to look for something to get pissed off at? Strange.
