'Where Would the Black Lives Matter Movement Be Without the Right to Free Speech?'
Ira Glasser, former head of the ACLU, is worried that his former group is embracing identity politics over free speech.
HD Download"Where would the Black Lives Matter movement be without the right to free speech?" asks Ira Glasser, the executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) from 1978 to 2001. "There is no social justice movement in America that has ever not needed the First Amendment to initiate its movement for justice, to sustain its movement to justice, to help its movement survive."
Glasser is the subject of the new documentary Mighty Ira, which chronicles his efforts to secure the speech rights of Nazis, undermine government attempts to regulate internet content, combat hate speech laws, and abolish campus speech codes. It is a portrait of a First Amendment hero who managed to have friends across ideological divides while remaining civil, engaged, and effective.
The 82-year-old Glasser is troubled by his former group's seeming embrace of identity politics over free speech, and he worries that younger social justice activists view the First Amendment as an adversary rather than an ally. "John Lewis said that without free speech and the right to dissent, the civil rights movement would have been a bird without wings," Glasser says. "That's historically and politically true without exception."

Assaulting less people trying to implement their own free speech?
Can we stop conflating free speech (protests) with violent actions?
Not in this world where free speech is defined as it is by the left. Free speech is free only when it is speech supporting what the left cares about. Now speech supporting they other side will be banned when the left/ANTIFA/PROGRESSIVES get their way fully ensconced in law. Then there will not be free speech unless it is ‘approved’ speech.
Case in point. Last week protesters in the Bay Area were gathering to protest twitter’s blocking of the Washington Post. Antifa amassed to counter-protest the free speech protest…counter-protest free speech, let that sink in. Before the protest even began Antifa thugs attacked the protest organizer, knocking out his teeth and beating one protester severely enough that he was take to a hospital by EMT’s. In full disclosure the hospitalized vic was wearing a Trump shirt.
I think you meant twitter’s blocking of the NY Post.
I quit working at shoprite and now I make $65-85 per/h. How? I’m working online! My work didn’t exactly make me happy so I decided to take a chance on something new…CMs after 4 years it was so hard to quit my day job but now I couldn’t be happier.

Obama Era: What color was the victim? What color were the aggressors? If “white”, had they received racial sensitivity training yet?
Trump Era: Was the victim wearing a Trump hat/shirt?
Does Trump get credit for ushering in the post-racial society yet?

It would help if the people who distinguish the two also recognized that there are indeed peaceful protests. One side pretends they are all peaceful, the other pretends they are all burn loot murder.
You are expecting moderation, balance, thoughtful consideration of nuances, and acknowledgment of complexities, whenever humans are involved… From the likes of JesseSPAZ?!?! THESE kinds of animals are even far more mythical than unicorns and honest politicians!
Were you always this dishonest? And were you always a totalitarian?

Also note that the likes of JesseSPAZ are hide-bound collectivists… If even just ONE BLM protester in a crowd of 1,450 throws a brick, they are ALL looters and burners! “Collective punishment” for them all! For some strange reason, the same idea does NOT apply to right-wing kooks, as happened with “Pizza Gate”.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pizzagate_conspiracy_theory
How cute, you never actually make thoughtful or accurate comments unless it is based on racism or defecation.
That’s because he’s a racist that eats shit
Neither of you two rebutted a single thing he said; just resorted to personal insults and nothing else. Is that the best you can do?
Sadly, that IS the best they can do. Limited minds have limited resources.
You can always tell the people who don’t work with professions. Accountants call out the failure of other accountants because that is what it means to be accountable; doctors give second opinions, lawyers dissent, etc.
The protestors and the press have failed on an epic level in calling out the violent. If every violent agitator at a protest who can be identified is not turned over to the police, then the protest was not peaceful. When they hold themselves to any standard, I will stop lumping them together.
A right-wing nut-job believed conspiracy theories, and, as a result, invaded a pizza joint and shot it up!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pizzagate_conspiracy_theory
What did YOU do, to stop your fellow right-wing nut-job from doing this? Are YOU ready to accept your “collective punishment”? Or are the both of you to be excused, because your motives were / are good? Because you are on the RIGHT side?
Really, you haven’t managed to spend five seconds thinking through why the fact that you have to bring up the Pizzagate guy, rather than a case of an unpunished rioter at a right-wing protest, itself completely undermines your case?
At a BLM protest where there are 1,449 other people, there are a bunch of people around the brick-thrower who can 1) stop him in the act, 2) grab him after the act, and 3) give statements and testimony to the police to ensure the thrower gets punished. Instead, the BLM movement has collectively pre-arranged the brick-thrower’s bail in the case he actually gets arrested, and loud BLM-supporter voices in the public square actually argue in favor of vandalism, arson, and looting. And though many claim to be opposed to the violence, they continue to voluntarily associate themselves with BLM, and thus with the violent and excuse-makers.
In the Pizzagate case, there’s no one in the physical position to stop the idiot, there’s no one except the police in a position to detain the idiot, there are no witnesses refusing to testify, there’s nobody paying the idiot’s bail, and there are no prominent right-wing voices supporting the action. And the only people who are equivalent of the people who continue to choose to support BLM after violent incidents are the tiny number of people who still promulgate Pizzagate.
In short, in one case the actions of the members of the group (BLM supporters) are actions that support and excuse criminal activity, and in the other case (your putative “right-wingers”), they aren’t. Even if the first group isn’t actually criminally liable for the brick-thrower’s action, they’re morally liable for supporting him in a way the second obviously isn’t.
You’re trying to have a conversation with someone that admitted they eat shit. And that said all black men have felony warrants.
“And though many claim to be opposed to the violence, they continue to voluntarily associate themselves with BLM, and thus with the violent and excuse-makers.”
As do right-wing nut-jobs who believe whack-job conspiracy believers! AND The Donald, who encourages them! Might does NOT make right!
Just a wee tad more of touching upon how the Trumptatorshit is openly inviting senseless right-wing violence in the USA, in reaction to ANY Trump election loss (no matter HOW legitimate and overwhelming), would have been a good idea, though, IMHO.
The case is easy and simple… Der TrumpfenFuhrer has done most of our work already!
Right-wing nut-jobs like to dismiss the idea of unjust, senseless violence being the result of LIES told by said right-wing nuts. This is just a Fairy Tale, they say.
They are WRONG!
…
HERE are the lies being told NOW, to right-wing nut-jobs, in hopes of stirring up “Pizza-Gate Part II”!
https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/24/politics/trump-election-warnings-leaving-office/index.html
A list of the times Trump has said he won’t accept the election results or leave office if he loses
Essential heart and core of the LIE by Trump: “ANY election results not confirming MEEE as Your Emperor, MUST be fraudulent!”
September 13 rally: “The Democrats are trying to rig this election because that’s the only way they’re going to win,” he said.
So Proud Boys etc. “Stand back” and “Stand by” (in standby mode) and ready to riot, should the Trumptatorshit LOSE the election, because the ONLY way that He can lose, is by fraud!
I didn’t read any of this shit-eater.
You can always tell the people who don’t work with professions.
…
If every violent agitator at a protest who can be identified is not turned over to the police, then the protest was not peaceful.
Not sure if the question was left to beg or simply omitted: If protestors of violent police action and the ‘thin blue line’ have their own ‘thin black line’, how are they any better/different? If every good cop is knowingly or not running cover for all the bad ones, whatever the proportion is, how are antifa/BLM protestors not the same as the old boss?
There are peaceful protests, but you need to recognize that once violence/damage/riots start, the “peaceful protestors” you claim are there are just providing cover. Something you refuse to do.
What are the peaceful protesters supposed to do, when they are forcibly bottled in by the police, as has repeatedly happened? The rioting starts… And I am prevented from fleeing! It is because WAAAY too many people, to include JesseSPAZ, have “punishment boners”! ALL must be punished!
They should have just stayed home and eaten shit like you do, right?
“Dear Abby” is a personal friend of mine. She gets some VERY strange letters! For my amusement, she forwards some of them to me from time to time. Here is a relevant one:
Dear Abby, Dear Abby,
My life is a mess,
Even Bill Clinton won’t stain my dress,
I whinny seductively for the horses,
They tell me my picnic is short a few courses,
My real name is Mary Stack,
NO ONE wants my hairy crack!
On disability, I live all alone,
Spend desperate nights by the phone,
I found a man named Richard Decker,
But he won’t give me his hairy pecker!
Decker’s pecker is reserved for farm beasts,
I am beastly, yes! But my crack’s full of yeasts!
So Dear Abby, that’s just a poetic summary… You can read about the Love of my Life, Richard Decker, here:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2019/10/11/farmers-kept-refusing-let-him-have-sex-with-their-animals-so-he-sought-revenge-authorities-say/#comments-wrapper
Farmers kept refusing to let him have sex with their animals. So he sought revenge, authorities say.
Decker the hairy pecker told me a summary of his story as below:
Decker: “Can I have sex with your horse?”
Farmer: “Lemme go ask the horse.”
Pause…
Farmer: “My horse says ‘neigh’!”
And THAT was straight from the horse’s mouth! I’m not horsin’ around, here, no mare!
So Decker the hairy pecker told me that, apparently never even realizing just HOW DEEPLY it hurt me, that he was all interested in farm beasts, while totally ignoring MEEE!!
So I thought maybe I could at least liven up my lonely-heart social life, by refining my common interests that I share with Richard Decker… I, too, like to have sex with horses!
But Dear Abby, the horses ALL keep on saying “neigh” to my whinnying sexual advances!
Some tell me that my whinnying is too whiny… Abby, I don’t know how to fix it!
Dear Abby, please don’t tell me “get therapy”… I can’t afford it on my disability check!
Now, along with my crack full of yeasts… I am developing anorexia! Some are calling me a “quarter pounder with cheese”, but they are NOT interested at ALL, in eating me!!! They will NOT snack on my crack!
What will I DO, Dear Abby?!?!?
-Desperately Seeking Horses, Men, or ANYTHING, in Fort Worth,
Yours Truly,
Mary Stack / Tulpa / Mary’s Period / “.” / Satan
You’re gross.
Not me! I am merely relaying along a letter, sent to me by “Dear Abby”, as was sent to “Dear Abby” by Mary Stack / Tulpa / Mary’s Period / “.” / Satan!!!
Mary Stack / Tulpa / Mary’s Period / “.” / Satan is the one who is, beyond ANY doubt, BEYOND gross!!!
I don’t know who Mary is, but your obsession with her period is very bizarre.
Lol. No one is complaining about peaceful protests. They are complaining about violent riots.
To come back and say “they are not all violent” is idiotic. No one said they are. But all riots ARE violent and that’s what we care about.
So you can stuff your sophistry.

Where they are now since they aren’t spewing hate speech. Hate speech isn’t free speech. All good people know this. Haven’t you been paying attention?
All Speech Matters!
and he worries that younger social justice activists view the the entire Constitution as an adversary rather than an ally.
FTFY
The reason that they younger social justice activists view the constitution as adversary rather than an ally is because it is an adversary to controlled speech which is exactly what they want. If a person’s speech is not prescribed then it is not to be free. Naturally it is the young social justice activist who prescribes the speech and these activists are just doing what they have been taught.
Yes, I’ve gotten the sense for some time that things like the BOR, private property, and due process are just in the way of progress.
they are also against the Electoral College and the Senate, since those put the more numerous but less populous states on equal or superior footing to the densely populated states with urban centers.
What those do, especially before the 17th (?) amendment, is emphasize that the country is a federation of states, which implies there are certain things the federal government can’t do. They don’t like to hear that.
When a group is absolutely convinced and truly believes in the superiority of their cause, any hindrance is necessarily immoral.
I’d suggest that even calling it a “hindrance” is incorrect. Every boundary is considered a hindrance, which, in turn, is considered unjust (if not immoral). It’s a teenager’s view of life.
That’s remarkably generous of you. I’d say they’re more like five year olds.
That’s still generous.
They’re zombies.
No more, no less.
In other news Glasser worries that Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 might be delayed. What kind of a beltway fart bubble has Glasser been living in to finally realize the ACLU is a worthless leftist organization?
Right where they are, or possibly more rich and more ascendant than they are. When all the establishment institutions, all the corporations, all the major coastal governments, all the major media support your organization, then without the rubes in flyover country able to speak out about this racist organization and philosophy, BLM would be very powerful indeed. So thank god for the narrowing zone of free speech we have left.
Think about it… a political organization was able to paint its name in the form of a huge banner advertisement on American city streets, often contra the licensing and permitting rules of the city in which this action took place, but no other organization was allowed to do the same. And that banner advertisement was afforded special police protection– and anyone driving across it leaving a tiremark would be investigated for a hate crime.
I don’t call that ‘free speech’ so much as I do call it state-supported speech.
Yeah, fuck off, BLM would have done just fine without free speech.
not in woke California. Once the BLM street art went public, a pro-Trump group asked to be allowed to paint a MAGA banner on the street. So the BLM art was gone suddenly.
I believe that’s what he’s referring to and/or your facts are a bit askew. The NRA couldn’t close down a street long enough to paint a banner like it and, as soon as they did, it would (one way or the other) be getting painted over and the NRA would face fines from the city. It wasn’t until a lawyer filed suit to say that she should have the right to paint a MAGA banner on the street that the BLM ‘art’ was removed.
The 82-year-old Glasser is troubled by his former group’s seeming embrace of identity politics over free speech
Ok, boomer. Those outmoded ideas of liberty and free speech are being tossed aside for a more progressive vision of justice and equity. Liberty, check out Ira McWhite Supremacist Glasser over here.

Another national journalist turns out to be a broken weirdo. Let me get my surprised face.
More like tubin’, amirite.
I think it was Stephen Colbert that actually made a joke to Jon Stewart in a Daily Show interview about Portnoy’s Complaint being the Bible for Manhattan Jews.
He is also the guy who got Jeff Greenfield’s 20 something daughter pregnant and refused to admit paternity until she sued him and a court made him take a DNA test showing he was the father.
Toobin was in his 50s and good friends with Greenfield at the time. So not only does he bang his friend’s daughter, a major party foul if there ever was one, he gets her pregnant and then effectively calls her a whore when she tries to get him to take responsibility.
But these are the same people who lecture about how Trump has a bad character. They are just disgusting trailer trash all of them
So much for Rev’s “betters.”
Everyone is the Rev’s better.
Eh… one call with sqrsly.
And, oh by the way, did NOT pay the court ordered child support.
And kept his job.
Damn, I didn’t realize he was such a stud. Now I don’t feel so bad for having a jam band in college called The Toobin Zoom Dick Incident.
That is a great band name
Zoom Dick was my nickname in college
Not to defend him too strongly but another word for “20 something daughter” is “adult”.
What’s the word for a 50 year old that lies about paternity and refuses to take responsibility?
Journalist
Wasn’t he the guy cheating on his wife with his colleague’s daughter, knocked her up, and then wouldn’t admit the kid was his? Until family court hit him with a support order?
Appears so: https://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/baby-drama-cnn-star-jeffrey-toobin-offered-casey-greenfield-money-abortion-sources-article-1.446944
Scumbag doing scumbag behavior, film at 11. Tell me he was also taking trips to Pedo Island?
And again, it pays to read through the thread before posting.
“Ira Glasser, former head of the ACLU, is worried that his former group is embracing identity politics over free speech.”
But according to Reason contributor Noah Berlatsky, that’s exactly the correct approach. See his excellent piece Is the First Amendment too broad? The case for regulating hate speech in America.
#BringBackBerlatsky
If I have one criticism of Reason.com, it’s this: letting Berlatsky go might be this website’s most serious mistake. You need to resume running his columns so you don’t miss out on gems like Trump voters motivated by racism may be violating the Constitution. Can they be stopped?
Indeed, losing Berlatsky was an even bigger blow than losing Dave Weigel.
Like all Reason writers he’s deeply committed to libertarianism. Except for Harsanyi of course.
Seems odd how many far leftists write for Reason. Really, really odd.
BLM has the backing of half the politicians and almost the entirety of the government and corporate bureaucracy. BLM would be just fine regardless of how the right to free speech is enforced.
Religious services, on the other hand…
As if your First Amendment right to religious freedom even deserves to be ranked on the same level as the First Amendment right to free speech for established media corporations!
The ACLU strongly supports and defends freedom of speech, as long as you’re saying the right things.
Where “the right things” are actually the left things?
The first amendment is meant to support speech that is unpopular. BLM has the support of the media, most the government, pretty much all the corporations.
Meanwhile, if you criticize BLM, you will be ostracized by the above. Heck, if you don’t sufficiently grovel for BLM, you will be ostracized.
So yeah, BLM see free speech as the enemy, since it’s the only resistance they face.
The real question is where the mostly peaceful protests would be if state and county health officials enforced the same COVID-19 lockdown restrictions on them as they did on other large public gatherings.
Yeah yeah too little too late for those 60s liberals to start whining now. Your grandkids are piece of shit radicals who don’t care.
The very people that think everything the Trump administration does is wrong, would theoretically give the justice department the ability to define what it prosecutes as hate speech. Cognitive dissonance much?
No, they expect to get rid of Trump and make sure nobody like him becomes President again. They want a permanent Democratic ascendancy where the Republicans getting back into power is as little a threat as the Whigs getting back into power.
I would make a joke about the Bull Moose party, but since they were the original Progressives, I would submit that they have actually committed a coup and assumed the Democrats.

The 82-year-old Glasser is troubled by his former group’s seeming embrace of identity politics over free speech, and he worries that younger social justice activists view the First Amendment as an adversary rather than an ally. “John Lewis said that without free speech and the right to dissent, the civil rights movement would have been a bird without wings,” Glasser says. “That’s historically and politically true without exception.”
Well, there is the entire piece.
1. It is not a ‘seeming embrace’. It is a full throated battle cry.
2. The ACLU views the entire US Constitution as an adversary, not just the first amendment.
3. John Lewis was right, and the fascists at ACLU want to clip everyone else’s wings.
Also worth noting that BLM has always embraced identity politics.
2. The ACLU views the entire US Constitution as an adversary, not just the first amendment.
This needs to be brought up whenever the NRA is indicted for their reticence to weigh in on any number of he said/she said firearms cases and/or their weak-throated defense of the 2A. For better or for worse, they haven’t advocated that the 2A trumps the 1A (or 3A, 4A, 5A…). There may be some contention about the 9 and 10A, but nowhere near bulldozing the whole BOR (and then some) the way the ACLU, SPLC, ADL, NAACP, Rainbos-PUSH, GLAAD, etc., etc., etc. have.
With due respect to Ira Glasser for his stance on the 1st Amendment, it’s curious that he’s concerned about Giuliani, Trump, Nixon, McCarthy deciding who gets to say what, but apparently not concerned that De Blasio, Kamala, the president of Harvard, or BLM (whoever they are) get to say.
For progressives trying to establish a generations-long ascendancy over American politics, the shoe-on-the-other-foot argument will seem boring and irrelevant and annoying.
Dude, BLM has ALWAYS been identity politics. It has never endorsed or defended free speech. Their entire world view is centered on the establishment of a hive mind.
BLM has sucked from the very beginning. That Reason caters to defenders of that group (and big tech) should tell you a lot.

Rioting and looting.

I know Gillespie finds it shocking that self proclaimed Marxists would behave like Marxists. but to the rest of us this is all no surprise.
But not worried enough that he’d ever consider voting for Trump, because actually opposing authoritarian movements with your vote is just a step too far.
But Ibram X. Kendi says criticizing BLM is racist, and racist speech is “unfree speech”, so it isn’t protected. 🙂
So, Ira Glasser was a racist Nazi all the time. Nobody said this yet, but I assume it will be forthcoming.

I can remember when Democrats had the best interests of America at heart.
They were just misguided people who had all the wrong ideas.
It would have been normal for a Democrat to say” I disagree with what you said but I defend to the death your right to say it.“
Now it’s “silence is violence” and knocking out teeth of black Americans protesting for free speech.
I don’t see any alternative to Civil War unless we allow the blue cities to secede from the United States
Dems used the freedoms provided by the BoR for their advantage when they didn’t run the culture. Once they gained cultural control, they suddenly (not surprisingly, just quickly) turned against it entirely.
Word.
When I was a child,we learned two major ideas about free speech:
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” and
“I may not agree with what you are saying, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”
Now they learn other ideas:
“Silence is violence” and “If you say something that is no longer approved (even if it was mainstream 5 years ago, or in the dictionary just yesterday), you will be canceled”.
Sadly, it looks more and more like they’ll have to be spanked.
Sticks and stones may be dodged when thrown, but words cut all the way through me.
