Joe Biden's $2 Trillion Green New Deal Is Just a Worn-Out Democratic Jobs Program

The presidential candidate wraps old special-interest programs in green camouflage.

"There's no more consequential challenge that we must meet in the next decade than the onrushing climate crisis. Left unchecked, it is literally an existential threat to the health of our planet and to our very survival." That's Democratic presidential contender Joe Biden, laying out his energy plan for the country.

He wants you to believe that his $2 trillion plan to combat climate change is a bold new agenda to save the planet. In fact, it's the same old worn-out jobs programs for Democratic Party interests that he's been pushing since he became a senator in the early 1970s.

"Climate change is real, but it's not the end of the world," says writer and activist Michael Shellenberger, who Time named a "hero of the environment" in 2008. He stresses that deaths from natural disasters "have declined 80 percent over the last 40 years, including in very poor countries." What's more, says Shellenberger, "carbon emissions have peaked in rich countries. They're going to peak in poor countries in the next 10 or 20 years." His new book, Apocalypse Never, makes the case that climate alarmism, which has become a central part of the Democratic Party's platform, is flat-out wrong and counterproductive for both the environment and the economy.

A major problem of Biden's rehash of the Green New Deal is that renewable energy sources such as solar power simply can't scale up to deliver the electricity that a modern society needs. Shellenberger notes, for instance, that solar farms require 400 times more land than natural gas or a nuclear plant because of the physics of sunlight or wind.

Before Biden revealed his massively expensive green energy plan, he had already promised more than $6 trillion in new spending over the coming decade, paid for through a mix of borrowing and hikes in income and corporate taxes. This comes at a time when the COVID-19 lockdown and emergency spending will push the debt above 100 percent of GDP by the end of 2020, and when the federal government is running vastly larger deficits than it did even at the height of the 2008 financial crisis.

Shellenberger says that if politicians were really serious about combating global warming, they would get behind fracking and nuclear energy, which is both clean and practical. Biden doesn't mention nuclear power, though, because it won't create jobs for "longshoreman" and "ship builders" or fulfill any other progressive fantasy, such as his dream of a "modern day Civilian Climate Corps" based on the New Deal's Civilian Conservation Corps.

In Apocalypse Never, Shellenberger argues that environmentalism has become a substitute for religion in an increasingly secular world. Environmentalists, he says, are "treating nature as a new god. They start treating science as a new religion. And that's when things just go absolutely bonkers and problematic."

Joe Biden's "clean energy plan" may make his followers feel saved and it might even help get him elected. But if past is prologue, it won't create many jobs or help "heal" the planet. It will just mean spending gobs of money we don't have in a massive giveaway to special interests.

  2. I think Joe Biden would like to rub shoulders with AOC. Maybe sniff her hair.

    1. Hey, PLEASE do NOT be sex-orientation biased! In all likelihood, I think it to be equally plausible that Biden would like to sniff Stalin’s hair! Regardless of whether Stalin-hair may be dead or alive!

And, to be politically balanced ass well ass sex-orientation balanced, I do believe that Der TrumpfenFuhrer would VERY MUCH SO like to sniff the hair of Attila the Hun! AND the scales of Godzilla!

      1. Take your meds Hihn.

        1. Wow! What a spectacularly written and original post! Not!

Do you write your own material, or does your mom write it for you? You might want to talk to her, maybe, about her perhaps writing some better material for you… MAYBE she is giving you a passive-aggressive hint that you are NOT satisfying her in bed! You gap-toothed Wonder Boy you!

    2. From what I understand about Biden’s second aneurysm surgery, he likely has little sense of smell left, and is essentially lobotomized. So his impulse control is compromised. Of course, advancing age hasn’t helped. So he leans in inappropriately and sniffs women. Among his other bizarre behaviors.

  3. Unfortunately, it isn’t just a socialist jobs program.

“[Biden’s] plan would aim to achieve a carbon pollution-free power sector by 2035.”

    —-NPR

    https://www.npr.org/2020/07/14/890814007/biden-outlines-2-trillion-climate-plan

I maintain that the central purpose of progressivism is using the coercive power of government to force us to make sacrifices for the general good as progressives see it, and Biden’s Green New Deal is an example of them wanting to use the coercive power of government to force us to sacrifice our standard of living for what they see as the common good–as if there were something the government should force us to make sacrifices for that’s more important than our standard of living?!

Everyone who wishes to sacrifice their money for a greener future is already free to do so within the contexts of markets, which don’t require any coercion whatsoever and have consistently delivered lower carbon emissions since 2007. Meanwhile, they can’t even answer basic questions, like whether our sacrifices will make any difference. China has more coal plants waiting to be turned on or under construction than we could turn off, and the worst possible outcome is the one where we sacrifice our standard of living for a greater good–and it ends up not making any difference.

So, tell us the answers to one specific question, Mr. Biden: How much will we need to sacrifice in GDP per capita before the temperature changes to lower than it would be as a result of our efforts?

There’s a term for people who are so devoted to a cause that they’ll sacrifice for it regardless of whether their sacrifices make any difference. That term is “religious fanatic”. Environmentalism has its own utopias, calls for sacrifices for causes that will only come to fruition in future generations, it has apocalypses, etc. There are even prophets of doom! There’s an argument to be made that Biden’s Green New Deal should be unconstitutional on the basis that it violates our First Amendment protections against the establishment of a national religion.

    1. Biden’s Green New Deal? Watermelon! Green on the outside, red-collectivist on the inside! VERY old story by now!

Gaia-lovers think that humans catastrophes from Gaia are GOOD, ’cause they wipe out humans, who are nasty parasites to Gaia; I kid you not!

To prove my point about the humans-haters, I give you this:
Bill McKibben is an un-reformed, 200-proof, human-hating asshole!
“At its extreme, green ideology expresses itself in utter contempt for humanity. Reviewing Bill McKibben’s The End of Nature in the Los Angeles Times, National Park Service research biologist David M. Graber concluded with this stunning passage: ‘Human happiness, and certainly human fecundity, are not as important as a wild and healthy planet. I know social scientists who remind me that people are part of nature, but it isn’t true. Somewhere along the lineat about a billion years ago, maybe half thatwe quit the contract and became a cancer. We have become a plague upon ourselves and upon the Earth. It is cosmically unlikely that the developed world will choose to end its orgy of fossil-energy consumption, and the Third World its suicidal consumption of landscape. Until such time as Homo sapiens should decide to rejoin nature, some of us can only hope for the right virus to come along.’
“It is hard to take such notions seriously without sounding like a bit of a kook yourself. But there they arecalmly expressed in the pages of a major, mainstream, Establishment newspaper by an employee of the federal government. When it is acceptable to say such things in polite intellectual company, when feel-good environmentalists tolerate the totalitarians in their midst, when sophisticates greet the likes of Graber with indulgent nods and smiles rather than arguments and outrage, we are one step further down another bloody road to someone’s imagined Eden. All the greens need is an opportunity and a Lenin.”
From “Free Minds & Free Markets”, Pacific Research Institute for Public Policy, 1993, which is a compilation of 25 years of articles from Reason magazine, this one being “The Green Road to Serfdom”, April 1990, by Virginia I. Postrel.

Proggie brain is generally addicted to self-righteous and smug coercion of others. It is also self-destructive of humans generally, as noted above. Then it’s also hypocritical, in that, if they REALLY believed that human life is a blight upon the planet, they’d just go off and commit suicide. But no, THEY personally aren’t part of the blight; those people over THERE are the blight! So proggie brain is pretty stupid AND evil…
Contard brain, in SOME flavors (hyper-nationalism, militarism, self-righteous religion, exono-phobia, gayophobia, etc.) can be just as bad, I will admit that. Contards don’t have as much “traction” (especially in media and academia) right now, THAT is the big difference!

      1. So what is with you telling everyone you eat shit?

        1. He’s a fecalphillac gourmet!

    2. So, tell us the answers to one specific question, Mr. Biden: How much will we need to sacrifice in GDP per capita before the temperature changes to lower than it would be as a result of our efforts?

The response of course is that the Green Revolution produces its own jobs out of the broken windows of the old industrial economy, so not only will we save the planet, we’ll employ billions in a government-directed economic program of green development.

      1. This is nonsense. All jobs are not equal. If the value produced is less, standards of living go down. Power is a universal requirement across the economy, so it doesn’t just impact one sector, but everything. “Green power” is horribly inefficient, scales badly, and doesn’t generate base power (power that can be produced on-demand).

-Scaling and inefficiency means power costs more, which means *everything* costs more. More expensive stuff means people have less = less wealth and lower standards of living.

-Lack of base power means power isn’t available as needed – it gets rationed, with preference to the politically favored.

    3. The Warmists get very angry when you refer to their cult as a religion.

      1. I have no problem with the idea of environmentalism as a religion–especially if it means the government won’t let them inflict their religious beliefs on the rest of us over our objections and against our will.

  4. I’m Joe Biden and I forgot this message.

    1. lol.

also accepting ” … and I stole this message.”

  5. I’m starting to think that Biden might not even be the nominee. Something might happen at the convention and he may be replaced.

MeThinks that this has ALREADY HAPPENED!!! The REAL Joe Biden has been replaced by an AI-driven golem-robot from the Planet of the Demo-Reptilians!!! There can be NO other plausible explanation!

      1. Sure there is.

        You’re insane.

        1. Try and fuck yer mom better next time, her writing that she writes for you is utterly, abysmally PATHETIC!!!!

          1. “her writing that she writes for you”

English not your first language then?

            1. He’s entered a manic stage of his illness. Could be just a day or two, or he could post this same shit repeatedly for over a week. Only time will tell.

            2. English is actually NOT my first language, yet it is FAR better than YOURS moron! Will you please tell me what it is that you THINK that it is, that is wrong with my writing?

…her writing (noun phrase) that she writes for you (descriptive phrase) is (sentence verb) utterly, abysmally PATHETIC (another descriptive phrase)!!!! Where did YOU go to stupid-school?

              1. Fuck off, you insane retard.

              2. “English is actually NOT my first language”

                We can tell Old Mex.

              3. “English is actually NOT my first language”

Obviously, that’s why I posted what I posted.

      2. Does he eat shit like you do?

    4. This would be the perfect time for a switcheroo. It’s a polarizing election and will anyone really care if Biden is usurped? His only appeal is not being Trump. Is the DNC smart enough to pull the trigger?

      1. They have to do it after he picks a VP, that way they aren’t pissing off the Bernie Bros by not giving him the nomination.

No way Biden will be allowed to debate Trump. We’ll have a DNC-chosen ticket come November. Because democracy is important!

  6. Hunter must have gotten on the board of a Chinese Solar power company or thinks the Nude Greened Eel is a stripper club about to open.

  7. Mr. Biden: How much will we need to sacrifice in GDP per capita before the temperature changes to lower than it would be as a result of our efforts? >

“Ken, you must sacrifice your first born son (with your favorite wife if you have multiple) on a mountain side in the Moriah region. So whatever that equals out to.”

    1. Damn this site!

  8. $4 trillion less than Trumps covid response plan. Who cares at this point.

    1. But Biden’s (useless) $2 trillion is socialism where the Con Man’s far bigger handout/welfare program is “capitalism”.

      See how that works?

To a Trump-tard like Jesse, Sevo, John, Rufus et al that is the big difference.

      1. So who has the fiscally responsible plan?

      2. Neat how you two are pretending that the Dem controlled house aren’t the ones who cooked up and rammed through the covid response plan.

  9. Is anyone listening to the incoherent blabbering coming out of Trumps mouth right now at the daily briefing?

    1. Well, His adoring fans are PRETENDING to listen! They are actually enslaved to the idea that Der TrumpfenFuhrer (***IF*** they adore him slavishly enough) will allow them to get “sloppy seconds” with Our Queen, Dripping in a Glaze of Vaseline, Who is Known ass Stormy Daniels!

Sad to say, they aren’t familiar with the history that will show you clearly, what happens with MANY of those who suck up to power! Der Donald will NOT share Stormy Daniels with ANYONE!!!

So many of us fantasize that our support of those who we think is (or will be) the “winner” will earn us the support of the “winners” and their spoils.

See “the night of the long knives” at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_of_the_Long_Knives… Ernst Röhm (head brownshirt, street brawler, for Hitler) thought his support of Hitler would leave him sitting pretty. So sorry, Ernst Röhm, Hitler had another thing coming for you…

Right here on Reason.com comments, we see the same thing. The “brownshirts” of the commentary (Shitsy, Nards) try to brownshirt their enemies off of the comments board, tell their enemies to commit suicide, and other “street fighting”. They, I suspect, expect payback (war spoils) from “winning” Orange Hitler, just as Ernst Röhm did from “winning” Hitler.

They and their ilk, too, have another thing coming… Orange Hitler will throw them under the bus, the VERY first instant that Orange Hitler finds it to be convenient to Him… Just as Shitler-Hitler threw Ernst Röhm under the bus!

Trump won’t commit to accepting result if he loses election

      1. usually you’re better than this ^^ nobody would agree to that in July.

      2. “Trump won’t commit to accepting result if he loses election”

        OMG!!!!! Outrageous!

Disputing the result of an election is only — I repeat ONLY — permissible if there is ironclad proof that the “winner” cheated. Like the 2016 election, in which Drumpf colluded with Putin. Or the Georgia governor’s race that was stolen from Stacey Abrams.

  11. Biden you old fool. You can’t outspend The Dotard. You never will. Trump is the true King of Debt like he told all his idiot voters.

    1. Remember when Pelosi and Schumer were larding the covid response plan, and Nuttplug was shrieking because Trump was gutting it? And now look at him. What a dishonest fuck.

  12. How long before Nick is booted from Reason because he mentions things besides orange man bad?

We CAN grab all the pussy, all the time, and NONE will be smart enough to EVER grab our pussies right back!

These voters simply cannot or will not recognize the central illusion of politics… You can pussy-grab all of the people some of the time, and you can pussy-grab some of the people all of the time, but you cannot pussy-grab all of the people all of the time! Sooner or later, karma catches up, and the others will pussy-grab you right back!

    2. If you listen to the editor’s roundtable podcast they all consistently shut him down when he takes a moment to question left-wing orthodoxy. He is talked over when he implies Trump isn’t bad. They refuse to engage in any deeper evaluations that he proposes or to be pinned down on where they stand on issues. He’s gotten lots of non-answers to questions of condemning the left or who they would support (including whether the “libertarians” would vote for the libertarian candidate)

      1. Well Nick has been ostracized by the talking heads so KMW et al have to oppose him or get tarred with the brush of the Orange Man.

  13. pretending Joe Biden has a plan beyond his next constitutional is lol’able

  14. These programs are designed not to succeed but to fail. Why? To exacerbate the climate crisis so the government can accrue more power and demand more money: “We learned from our mistakes and this time we’ll fix it.” Even worse, we’re paying millions of people trillions to insult and bully us all day: “These programs are helping the climate you idiot! We only went up 1 degree not seven if you had been in charge!”

Instead the solution is for rich people to create no-frills, low-carbon retirement colonies, and otherwise to plant trillions of trees. This is a far cheaper and proven effective solution for reclaiming carbon.

  15. I can accept that the GND is a jobs program, so what. What is Trump deregulation of coal and other environmental regulation but a job program for industries at the end of their lifecycles. What about defense spending and products then sent to the police so we can buy more from military contractors. Aren’t these really job programs. What about paying for a new sports stadium, these will bring in jobs. I don’t mind debating whether the government should have jobs programs. But to say the ones we have now for outdated industries are OK and but we should not have one for GND is wrong. Be consistent Gillespie.

    1. No, it isn’t. The free market should decide what industries are ‘outdated’. Not politicians. If all this green bullshit your fellow travelers love so much were worth a shit they wouldn’t need trillions in government subsidies. The ‘subsidized’ industries aren’t subsidized at all. You just consider it a subsidy if the coal and petroleum industries aren’t Taxed and regulated out of existence.

      1. Coal’s time has past. Yes, saying that the tax payer will pay clean up their messes, cover health costs for injuries the industry causes is a subsidy. Government had always had a hand in picking winner and losers. It time to leave the old industries behind and get to the present. If you had your way we still be using lamps with whale oil.

          “Coal’s time has past.”

If that’s so, there would bee no market for it.
          You.
          Are.
          STILL.
          Full.
          Of.
          Shit.

    2. deregulation of coal and other environmental regulation but a job program

Deregulation is a jobs program? This possibly the dumbest statement ever posted here.

  16. Ctrl+F “Jorg”: No results

Yet again the Libertarian party’s own fucking magazine can’t be arsed to cover its own fucking politician. There’s no mention of how Jo’s policies contrast with Joe’s. No, just more coverage of the same two senile rapists.

    1. This is (was) a libertarian magazine, not the Libertarian Party’s magazine.

Libertarianism is a philosophy, not an American political party.
And tbh the Libertarian Party doesn’t consistently field strong libertarians.

  17. Nick, you keep trotting out Shellenberger as what? And environmentalist? Says who? A scientist? Yeah, I don’t think so.

Your “credentials” for him is that 12 years ago Time noted his importance to the environment. Great. 12 years ago. That same publication this month just ran an article on climate change entitled “ 2020 Is Our Last, Best Chance to Save the Planet.” So, that’s your credential citing publication, at least currently.

Do you read what Democrats proposed? No, you don’t. You want nuclear? Their plan calls for investment in nuclear. It embraces small, modular reactors. Calls for R&D into nuclear. And get this: calls for government loan guarantees and financing to help grow nuclear.

Listen to you about nuclear. It’s minimal today because of the market. Expensive up front costs, expensive operating costs, costs overruns, and more. You can’t get the private sector to invest in nuclear. Unless of course the government starts doing things like elements called for in the House plan, which at least is a start. Are you looking for government investment in nuclear? Yeah, right. You’re a libertarian. You don’t want government investment in anything.

This is what John Kotek, VP of Nuclear Energy Institute said: “We are encouraged the plan includes support to keep our existing nuclear plants churning out reliable carbon-free power for American homes and businesses and promotes development and demonstration of advanced reactors that can decarbonize sectors beyond power generation. The recognition of nuclear in the report demonstrates the consensus that nuclear energy is viewed as an essential partner to wind, solar and storage to achieve an affordable, reliable, decarbonized energy sector.”

So save your “little-to-worry-about” Shellenberger. I’ll quote your own Science correspondent, Ronald Bailey, just this year: “Will climate change be apocalyptic? Probably not, but the possibility is not zero. So just how lucky do you feel? Frankly, after reviewing the scientific evidence, I’m not feeling nearly as lucky as I once did.”

Cue call for the phony libertarians who comment here!

  21. A major problem of Biden’s rehash of the Green New Deal is that renewable energy sources such as solar power simply can’t scale up to deliver the electricity that a modern society needs. Shellenberger notes, for instance, that solar farms require 400 times more land than natural gas or a nuclear plant because of the physics of sunlight or wind.

    1. ah who needs electricity. whats the old joke?

what did the socialists use before candles? light bulbs!

    1. “What is Trump deregulation of coal and other environmental regulation but a job program for industries at the end of their lifecycles.”

You are one confused puppy! Gov’t schooled all your life?
Deregulation simply allows the market to determine which products are ‘at the end of their lifecycles’.
I’m sure you’ve been taught that the government should determine that, right?

  23. as if there were something the government should force us to make sacrifices for that’s more important than our standard of living?!
