Remy: It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

Government plays Santa Claus with your tax money.

Have a Tesla on your Christmas wish list? Don't thank Santa—thank Tom in Ohio.

Parody written and performed by Remy. Video by Austin Bragg. Music tracks, background vocals, and mastering by Ben Karlstrom

LYRICS:

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Everywhere you go
Folks with six-figure salaries
Are shopping in galleries
With a gift card paid by Tom in Ohio

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Roadsters all around
And while Tom can't afford a car
He'll buy part of one for John
Cuz somehow that's allowed

Well a black Model X and a tax credit check
Is the wish of Connor and Ken
And a dark Model 3 that is partially free
Is the hope of Bobby and Ben
While Tommy takes the bus and eats Vienna sausages

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Hear those sleigh bells ring
But what else could you expect
With a tax code so complex?
Ensuring just these things?

Yes a car with aplomb that's, in part, paid by Tom
Is the wish of Victor and Von
A sedan that can drive and takes years to arrive
Is the hope of Lenny and Lon
While Tommy pinches pennies never flushing number one

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Soon the credits end
But the funniest sight to see's
When typical for DC
They're renewed again
Everything's renewed again

    Another Winnah!

    Sorry, Tom, that's democracy in action.

  • MatthewSlyfield||

    Democracy = two wolves and one sheep voting on what to have for dinner.

  • Duke of url||

    Liberty= A well armed lamb contesting the vote!

  • MatthewSlyfield||

    Ram-bo First Blood!

  • BigT||

    F-ing brilliant!!!

  • Unicorn Abattoir||

    Is Remy making a statement about tax breaks for the wealthy being paid for by the average guy, or suggesting that only wealthy gay couples buy Teslas?

  • MatthewSlyfield||

    Why does it have to be one or the other? Why not both?

  • Cynical Asshole||

    Both. And just wealthy gay couples, wealthy gay couples who all wear matching sweater vests and walk around with Apple wireless earbuds in their ears like a bunch of douchebags.

  • ||

    or suggesting that only wealthy gay couples buy Teslas?

    No. We are Remy, Remy is us. The tax credits are the way we all buy a car and laugh together.

  • ||

    The $7500 tax credit for Tesla is an indulgence for the wealthy and it's obscene.

    I know someone. Household income: Around 800k. He owns two Teslas. Try and tell me he deserves a tax credit.

    They talk about 'fairness'. How in the world is this fair?

    Because Gaia? GTFOH.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS!

  • Unicorn Abattoir||

    Yes, because those tax cuts help him save the earth, while allowing him to buy a Learjet.

  • Mcgoo95||

    The tax cuts are nearly as stupid as the 20% tax Macron almost put on gas in France. The only difference is here we make a funny song about it. Incentive vs. punitive are equally bad at achieving the desired goal (saving Gaia) but usually only one of them causes people to die in the street.

  • Unicorn Abattoir||

    The French have their funny song too.

  • Cyto||

    Well, if he truly has an earned income around $800k, he's footing the bill for the government to the tune of nearly a third of a million bucks every year. Taking $7k less one time is hardly "unfair" in a world where you could buy a nice house for what the government takes every year.

  • Unicorn Abattoir||

    Just noticed - my parents had that exact couch (and paneling) in their home.

  • The Last American Hero||

    You had a HOME? And Parents (plural)???

    Way to flaunt your privilege.

  • Cyto||

    You learned words like "flaunt" and "privelege"?

    LUXURY!

  • newshutz||

    Bragg should have played Tom in Ohio.

  • BestUsedCarSales||

    Remy was on Andrew Heaton's podcast two weeks ago, in case you want to just hear his sexy speaking voice for an hour or so.

  • Leo Kovalensky II||

    Wouldn't.

  • Hank Phillips||

    Brilliant! But what happens if Schenectady police find a seed in the ashtray of your $100,000 car and asset-forfeiture "share" it to fund the Police Union blowout?

  • Cyto||

    Just fantastic, as usual.

    One nit-pick on actual policy.... Tom in Ohio who takes the bus and eats Vienna sausages isn't paying for part of the Tesla. Tom is part of the half of all American workers who don't pay income taxes. His older brother Carl who has two kids just out of college is footing that bill while driving an 11 year old Honda Odyssey and working to build back his retirement fund after paying for his kids' tuition.

  • markm23||

    If Tom is paying child support, it's quite likely that he has a salary well above average and is paying income taxes.

    Even if he's working at minimum wage, he is paying other taxes, for instance Social Security and Medicare. I just turned 65 with no interest in retiring, but apparently I have to sign up for Medicare now. So I'll be drawing a $75K salary, and the $11 per hour workers at the factory will be paying at least half of my medical insurance. And in a few years, I'll reach the maximum age to begin receiving Social Security, and they'll also be supplementing my cash income by more than their pre-tax pay - and it's tax-free for me!

    The difference in our pay scales is because I worked hard and completed an engineering degree while they were cutting classes, kept on digging into the books to keep current on the job, and I am known in this niche of industry for hard _and accurate_ work. When my previous employer folded ten years ago, I barely had time to get my resume out before someone I had worked with before was calling and offering a job - and this was in the Great Recession.

    Great job!

    Whatever they are paying Shikha, they should cut her off and give you that amount.

    I adore the Christmas time. This is the best time of the year. On the streets of each window are Christmas songs. In theaters are showed Christmas performances.
