Trump's Art of the Deal for Peace in the Middle East
Plus: new tariff threats escalate China trade war, federal layoffs begin amidst the government shutdown, and Democrats face a candidate-quality crisis
This week, editors Peter Suderman, Katherine Mangu-Ward, Nick Gillespie, and Matt Welch celebrate the release of over 2,000 hostages, political prisoners, and detainees, while considering whether President Donald Trump's Israel–Gaza deal represents a genuine step toward lasting peace in the Middle East. They discuss whether Trump's foreign policy approach is consistent, examining his recent strikes in Venezuela, and whether his record abroad compares favorably to his chaotic record at home.
The conversation then turns to Trump's new China tariffs, which rattled markets and underscored his erratic approach to trade policy, followed by yet another round of bailouts for struggling farmers. The editors also examine Congress' indifference amid another government shutdown and the growing sense that lawmakers have ceded their role entirely to the executive branch. They discuss a federal judge's weekend ruling that limits Trump's ability to deploy National Guard troops into U.S. cities, and what it signals about the courts' willingness to check his power. Finally, they assess the Democrats' persistent candidate-quality problem, from Virginia to California, and how it reveals a party struggling to find competent leadership. A listener asks whether a libertarian could offer a meaningful alternative in New York City's next mayoral race.

Peace In Hour Time!
I hope my pessimism is unjustified.
Pieces in an hour's time is pessimism.
Whirled peas!!
Hostages released!! Unfortunately it was 1500 Palestinians!! 😉
Shrike likes it when the bug hand is on the little hand.
SSqrlsy’s favorite time of day is eight turdy.
We finally have peace in our time!! What an amazing time to be alive!!! And to think of those dark days in 2024 my utility rates were 30% cheaper….but those Palestinians were still being held hostage by Israel! And thanks to Trump they are free!!!!!!
So sorry this is happening to you, Shrike.
You mean peace in our time?? It’s happening to all!! Cry more, lib!!
He really should head to Canada and let them put him to sleep.

30% cheaper utility rates in 2024? Lying sack of shit...
Republicans want higher prices…that’s why they support tariffs and exporting natural gas to China.
Satanyahu wants peace.... a piece of Lebanon, a piece of Syria, a piece of Iraq, a piece of Iran, a piece of Turkey....they already have a piece of America....it's called Washington, D.C.
Next Trump makes a deal that ends the ages long conflict between cats and dogs.
Trump can solve any war by forcing the side winning to surrender like he did in Afghanistan and Gaza.
So sorry this is happening to you too, Sarckles.
1500 Palestinians freed!! And they get an all paid trip to fantabulous Gaza!!!!
Right?
Sarc is channeling Harry Sisson and other ignorant democrats. But he isnt one, just ask him.
You would rather see thems of thousands more people die that allow Trump to win. You really are a worthless, loathsome, Marxist drunk.
Well seethe harder, Trump won.
And he surrendered to the Taliban in 2020 and now he forced Netanyahu to stop eradicating Hamas.
So what about all the thousands of Palestinians, including children being held in prisons just for being a Palestinian?
As for any lasting peace in the middle east, don't count on it. That nauseatingly evil POS, Satanyahu should never be trusted for anything. Whatever drek that issues from his mouth should be taken as a deception.
Putting your trust in Israel is like trusting a rattlesnake.
The Talmudic zionist vampire squid with its tentacles around the throat of America.
So many innocent people have been murdered at the hands of that Talmudic shite hole.
By the way, many Palestinians were either Christian or actual Hebrews but that doesn't matter, the Zios have been butchering Christians for more than a hundred years. Back then, they were called Bolsheviks.
I keep forgetting you are white supremacist shithead.
You care as much about dead Palestinians as you do live ones. Their bones are grist for your mill, their blood is ink for your pamphlets.
Don’t you and Misek have a Klan meeting to attend?
Trump is playing us all once again. His relentless whining about solving 7 wars and deserving a Nobel has set the frame and you all walk right into it blindly. The fact is that Israel was exhausted. there is nothing left to bomb and because the left has successfully shamed Israel with talk of genocide they were ready to hault. They gave back more hostages (prisoners) than Hamas gave back and yet this all told like Trump is some big deal maker. The story is that might makes right. Drop enough bombs so that an oppnent cries unclue and then give Trump credit for some kind of deal. We are getting dumber by the day.
You can claim yourself getting dumber every day and I doubt many would argue your point.
Your post has showed you clearly have a distorted view of reality and history continually proves you wrong. But you do you.
I see MOSSAD agents are here. Or are they simply paid by MOSSAD/ADL to attack anyone who dares repudiate the "official narrative"?
I refuse to bow and scrape to that nasty Zionist outlaw state, Israel.
For those who don't like it, too bad.
Look how stupid you are.
I love Diners, big part of my day to day while living in NYC in mid to late 80's. They are all but disappearing here in Southern California. The Few that are left are mostly chains (Local chains like Norms,) are very pricey now. I really miss old coffee shops that were slimmed down diners. Miss the coffee and cigarettes and late night conversations at the counter.
"Nighthawks at the diner of Emma's Forty-Niner
There's a rendezvous of strangers around the coffee urn tonight
All the gypsy hacks and the insomniacs
Now the paper's been read, now the waitress said
[Chorus]
"Eggs and sausage and a side of toast
Coffee and a roll, hash browns over easy
Chili in a bowl with burgers and fries
What kind of pie?" -Tom Waits
