Maj Toure: Why Black Guns—and Libertarianism—Matter
Gun control is 'the most racist practice in America,' says the Philadelphia native and community leader.
Today's episode is guest-hosted by my Reason TV colleague Zach Weissmueller. Zach went to Philadelphia to talk with Maj Toure, who runs the Solutionary Center in North Philadelphia. It's a place for locals to learn firearms skills and safety, how to avoid and de-escalate conflicts, and to pick up other life skills ranging from first aid to yoga to phlebotomy. "We hear a lot of people say, 'If these communities would just pull themselves up by the bootstraps,'" says Maj. "Okay, this is the bootstraps."
The Philly native is a hardcore libertarian, founder of the gun rights group Black Guns Matter, and a supporter of the Mises Caucus that recently took control of the Libertarian Party. He tells Reason that libertarians can improve their outreach in urban America by getting behind leaders and organizers who have an intuitive understanding of the needs and concerns of the residents who live there.
Here is the Reason interview with Maj Toure.

Just can’t get on board with appendix carry, but sure seem to see it a lot.
Gun won't go off if the trigger isn't pulled. Use a proper holster and don't fuck with it and you won't Glock yourself.
It's not all that comfortable for those of us with, ahem, 'frontal padding'.
And it's kind of the only place that works to really conceal when you aren't wearing a jacket or anything if, like me, you have a distinct lack of padding.
It looks like he has some sort of clip thing for his handgun and magazine attached to his jeans, but I think they are meant to be used on belts, not on the pants themselves.
Looks like a custom inside carry kydex holster. I have one with two clips just like it. But even with my subcompact there's no way I could carry like that and sit down.
They make heavy-duty belts for that purpose. A regular belt will just sag with the jeans.
Black guns matter? Sure, why not! Here's another one for you: Black Lives Also Matter, BLAM! http://www.churchofsqrls.com/BLAM/
What's he packin? Looks like a Glock 17 Gen 5 to me.
Whatever it is, it's gonna hurt when he sits down.. If he can even sit down.
Driving with that rig would be no fun.
Yeah, but he's just posing for a photograph. You guys are critiquing a photo op, not his actual carry style. I assume, anyway.
How do we know that isn't how he carries?
We don't, but I assume with his shirt pulled up intentionally revealing the Glock and the mag, it's just a photo op.
That's how I carry. Except I have a sturdy belt.
I'm going to assume you're right... because man, I don't see how that would work.
Appendix is probably the most popular carry style.
is that a clip in your pants or are you just happy to see me?
Do we really need to get into the difference between a clip and a magazine or are you just being facetious?
wonk yourself out I was just making light.
Terrible position to carry in.
When government fails at every level to protect your rights, the grass roots approach is the only reasonable alternative. When a significant proportion of the public is "carrying" then both criminals and cops will be much less likely to attack us. The kind of training available at Solutionary is just the kind of training responsible citizens should pass in order to become good citizens. I will try to listen to the whole interview when I get home from work.
When a significant proportion of the public is “carrying” then both criminals and cops will be much less likely to attack us.
Criminals, yes. They face consequences for their actions. Cops will just shout "Gun!" and start blasting away whenever they feel frightened. And nothing else will happen.
I'm not going there. Suffice it to say that they're already doing that now.
That's not my experience, but of course I live in Texas where there are a lot of both licensees and constitutional carry folks. That means cops have gotten used to legal carry since 1996.
I got pulled over recently for a taillight that was out. When I showed the officer my license (which is required in Texas) he asked if I was carrying. I told him I was.
"Good," he said. "Too many licensees don't."
YMMV. Attitudes are probably very different in New York, California, et al.
Agreed, personal experiences are not "scientific" evidence. All it takes is one example of a cop killing an innocent person claiming that she thought he had a gun when he didn't have a gun to destroy the claim that cops aren't killing innocent people. And we have hundreds of such examples over the last few years. My assertion that cops will be less likely to shoot innocent victims if, like the criminals, they know that they're more likely to be shot in self-defense is unproven but supported by your "personal experience."
Gun rights are the Achilles heel of the left. They want to disarm everyone but the cops, whereas I want to arm as many black people as possible. Now, please tell me who’s the racist?
Love seeing Philly, PA!
