David Harsanyi: Why America Must Reject 'Eurotrash' Ideas
The National Review staffer's new book is a spirited defense of capitalism, individualism, and free speech.

"About three times as many Europeans leave their homelands and immigrate to the United States every year as the other way around," reports David Harsanyi. Yet "a growing number of American elites—politicians, academics, pundits, journalists, among others—argue, with increasing popularity, that we should look across the Atlantic for solutions to our most pressing problems." Figures such as Sen. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.) and Nobel laureate and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman want us to follow Europe's lead when it comes to healthcare, government spending, tax policy, business regulations, and restrictions on free speech.
In Eurotrash: Why America Must Reject the Failed Ideas of a Dying Continent, Harsanyi, a syndicated columnist and senior writer at National Review, documents how the United States is doing far better across a wide array of economic, cultural, and political indicators than Europe. It's a powerful argument that is as nuanced as it is polemical. For instance, he notes that Scandinavian countries are hardly as socialist as their American champions and critics both claim. He also notes that many nationalist conservatives seem hellbent on importing a loathsome blood-and-soil populism from Hungary and other European countries.
I talk with Harsanyi about all that and how his career—which includes stints at The Denver Post, Glenn Beck's The Blaze, and The Federalist—reflect massive changes in the media landscape and what it means to be on the political right (he considers himself a conservative with some libertarian leanings). Born in 1970 and raised in Queens and Long Island by Hungarian refugees from communism, he remains deeply critical of many of former President Donald Trump's protectionist policies while also freaked out by President Joe Biden's massive government spending.

Comrade Bernie is free to emigrate to Euroland. He probably wouldn't be able to afford three houses though.
Socialism been berry berry good to Bernie.
Is it only three?
That he owns. I’m sure there’s several dachas he visits.
"a spirited defense of capitalism"
Capitalism is purely an economic system - not a (politically) moral one.
The morality is ALL in the concept of a free market - any market that respects freedom of (economic) association.
It is the free market that needs the spirited defense. Attempts at proving the morality of capitalism have never succeeded to my knowledge.
At best capitalism calls for non-intervention by the state in the market (laissez-faire) - but does not call for any general principle.
I still don't get why we're using a pejorative cooked up by socialists to describe the free market.
There is a fine tradition of that sort of thing. I don't think it matters. And the fact is that the system that the socialists labeled "capitalism" has done more to improve standards of living for more people than anything else ever has, so it's a pretty weak insult anyway.
That's why I refer to "free enterprise" instead.
Capitalism, a system where the prudent allocation of capital creates wealth, is a good name.
So what if it was intended as a pejorative. Fuck 'em.
What do you think Capitalism is? Let's start there.
That is a good question and often misunderstood.
Capitalism is simply the private ownership of the means of production.
Capitalism is not the absence of regulations.
There are plenty of rules that industry follows that aren't backed up with government violence. They agree because it works.
An absence of rules enforced by men with guns doesn't mean an absence of rules.
How old is this book? These days it's Europe that's objecting to importing America's fucked up wokeism shit.
And after we spent the better part of a century importing it from Europe, too.
He also notes that many nationalist conservatives seem hellbent on importing a loathsome blood-and-soil populism from Hungary and other European countries.
Trumpism is already here.
Trump is so nationalist that he married a foreigner.
Please never stop mentioning Drumpf at least once in every topic you post in. It demonstrates your intellectual maturity almost as well as your fondness for toilet humor does.
Speaking of Orange Hitler, how's the legal case against him coming along? I'm reminded of this comment:
"The Dotard will join his convict team soon." - Sarah Palin's Buttplug 2, May 23, 2021
What will he be convicted of? Obviously Mueller proved collusion. Will that be it? Or maybe pre-2016 financial crimes?
#ItsMuellerTime
I doubt collusion is a criminal offense.
Some things he is guilty of include (but not limited to):
Tax evasion
Election tampering (Georgia SoS at work on that one)
Jan 6 incitement to riot
Personal use of campaign funds (Stormy - bless her heart)
Money laundering
Wow. So much material to work with. Hopefully a prosecutor funded by libertarian icon George Soros will finally put Drumpf behind bars!

Pluggo’s infatuation with Trump is considerable but eclipsed by something more disturbing.
He's into #DefendBidenAtAllCosts even more than I am.
I could never have come up with witty catchphrases like SLOPPY PULLOUT or HAPERINFLATION.
“SLOPPY PULLOUT”
That’s close to what Chumby’s referring to.
Look. Walls don't just close in by themselves. It takes time and sophisticated engineering.
I was told that Europe was rejecting Ameritrash?
Looks like the Jacket is Hungary for more Soros checks.
Is it a rehash of Washington's farewell address
Yet "a growing number of American elites—politicians, academics, pundits, journalists, among others—argue, with increasing popularity, that we should look across the Atlantic for solutions to our most pressing problems."
Is it growing? This has been the case pretty much all of my adult life.
You mean the "There aught to be a law" 50s?
I just know that pretty much all of my life people on the left have said, "Well in Europe ____________________".
And your first bullet item on the page is always healthcare.
The left has always been europhile.
They hate being provincials.
And college. Don't forget free college (as long as you study what the standardized tests say you're best at, otherwise you're on your own).
And American teachers unions would not like Euro style education at all.
It's been true since Marx wrote the communist manifesto. And promoted by the exact same group.
Oh please. Let's just quit it with the mindless Europe-bashing. There's plenty of good ideas everywhere, both from Europe and elsewhere, that we Americans could stand to learn about and benefit from.
Examples:
France produces the vast majority of its electricity from nuclear power. They seem to do so without turning their country into a radioactive wasteland.
Germany has a federal type of governance system, that of course we imposed upon them after WW2, that ironically seems to perform better than our own nowadays, when it comes to voter participation and multiparty democracy. Maybe we could stand to learn something from them about how to fix our broken system.
Switzerland, of course, has even looser gun laws than in this country, and they don't seem to have turned into a real-life instance of Call of Duty. Maybe they have something to teach us about how to blend widespread gun ownership with low gun violence rates.
Germany's education system is less egalitarian, but seems to produce superior educational outcomes at least up to the highschool level. It is also overwhelmingly publicly funded, and the teachers also overwhelmingly belong to unions, like here, but they don't seem to have the same problems that we have here. Maybe we could learn something from them.
And for the right-wingers, European abortion laws tend to be more strict than here.
There is a lot for them to learn from us and a lot for us to learn from them.
Apropos of nothing, I wonder what Switzerland's ethnic makeup is, compared to the US?
Why don't you stop being coy and tell us what you really think.
Homogenous societies are always more generous based on historical data. People of like mind and like culture are more willing to assist their in group. Whats to talk about? That's reality.
Switzerland. Homogenous?
It was. As more immigrants moved their support for generous welfare programs dropped. Same with all of Netherlands.
https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0003122413513022
It wasn't. It's long been divided along linguistic, religious, cultural and ethnic grounds. You clearly know nothing of the place.
Homogenous societies are always more generous based on historical data.
So explain sub-sahara african poverty and illiberality.
We have a racial underclass, they don't.
And our betters prefer it that way.
A: I know what it's like to be ostracized by society for your sexual preferences.
B: Sleeping with women that aren't your wife isn't a 'sexual preference.'
A: No, it is. I prefer them.
So our "racial underclass" necessarily leads to disproportionately large amounts of gun violence? How so?
Is there any leftist talking point you dont blindly shout?
Just ignore - San Fran, LA, Chicago, Philly, Baltimore, etc right. No gun violence there.
Yes, the media likes to focus on the school shooter, which is horrible but honesty rare. They don't focus on the little girl that gets shot on the weekend in her room because bullets fly.
Yes there is a racial underclass because Dems need it that way. You have to be a victim so they can help you. It's never your fault it's someone else.
World Wars 1 and 2 were bad ideas.
Especially on the part of the United States's joining them. Score -1,000 for Roosevelt, the British, the Jews, and the rest of those driving this.
R.I.P. the flower of America's youth. Twice.
Conservatives/National Review aren't for individualism and free speech. They're for forcing their religious beliefs and morals on people. That's just as bad as "Eurotrash ideas".
LOL
Just another demonstration that leftists are incapable of learning, simply repeated the party line from 30 years ago
Its why libertarians and conservatives are different. Its a fact.
Yea, not wanting trannies counseling their children is totes forcing their religion on people!
Go wear your mask and get another few tests then jabs, and leave decent people the fuck alone.
I was thinking more of drugs, prostitution, porn, church/state, abortion, gays.... as a couple examples.
Like what? You're mistaken if you think the majority of conservatives want an ideology of "Let's Make America Evangelical". Glenn Youngkin understood this.
Damn Nick can you make these more bite size? Covid has crashed my long commute to the point where my 2 year old car only has 4k miles on it since my new workspace is actually closer to my bed than my coffee maker. These were great for the long drive but - maybe I just need more comfortable headphones and listen while I "work".
biggest problem for europe is that the market is incredibly fragmented but since 2015 the tech sector has been growing and maturing because of new policies that make it easier to trade between the countries, more companies today stay independent and investments are increasing

NEW - French parliament approves Macron's vaccine pass to exclude unvaccinated citizens from "basic aspects of life." The bill will now proceed to the Senate.
I click on the Play triangle and ... nothing happens. Frustrating.
Europe has been war torn shithole ran by repressive governments since the Roman empire. That is why people leave there for here.
The main glue that held America together was Christianity. Alexis de Tocqueville recognized this.
My bet is that Hawaii and/or Alaska will be the first to go. They are distant, blessed with ample resources, and have a distinct, thriving indigenous culture that has survived for hundreds if not thousands of years without ties to Washington.
