Karol Markowicz's Escape From New York Should Worry Blue-State America

This Brooklyn-bred New York Post columnist and her family are fleeing to Florida due to bad education policy and COVID mismanagement.

"I am leaving New York City for Florida." wrote self-confessed "New York supremacist" and New York Post columnist Karol Markowicz in a widely circulated article for Fox News. She's not happy about it, but she's also not apologizing. What drove her out of the city she and her husband called home for decades was the arbitrary and capricious treatment of students, including her three young children, stuck in public K-12 schools during the pandemic. She's vamoosing "because they took away school during the pandemic and not enough of my fellow New Yorkers cared. I kept looking around at a civilization that does not value education. Or worse, values it for their own kids, in the form of private pods or putting them into open private schools, but won't fight for their less fortunate neighbors to have the same."

Markowicz is not alone. In 2020, some 320,000 people left New York City. Her family's destination is Florida, where the cost of living is cheaper and the schools—and just about everything else—have stayed open during much of the past two years.

Her story is representative of a large swath of refugees leaving big-population blue states for places like Texas and Florida. For the first in recorded history, California lost people year over year and a congressional seat. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reported that "51,108 New Yorkers moved to Florida between April 2020 and April 2021." The Sunshine State surpassed New York in population in 2014 and over the course of the decade between 2010 and 2020, it gained 14.6 percent in residents while New York scratched out a gain of just 4.2 percent, well below U.S. growth of 7.4 percent. The gap between the two states continues to grow, with Florida boasting 21.8 million people and New York at 19.8 million people in the latest Census data.

"It's ridiculous to live anywhere else," Markowicz tells Nick Gillespie. "But it turns out that the city hates children and I can't be a part of that anymore."

  1. Lies! Reason never criticizes progressives! Or Democrats! More gaslighting from the Biden voting traitors at Reason!

    Did I get that right?

      1. That is a fake sarc above you.

          1. Yet all are real. It’s a conundrum.

    1. Mute the guy above and my comment will not be greyed out. Why? It's not me.

      1. Very clever.

Now Tulpa is trying to get everyone to mute me.

How did you ever think of that one?

        1. Everyone who's going to mute me already has, Tulpa.

        2. I haven't muted anyone and this is the only comment above other than yours:

          Don't look at me!
          December.22.2021 at 4:27 pm

          1. Mute the first sarc and only half the sarc comments are muted.

            1. Then go to an earlier thread and my posts are not muted. It's not me.

              1. This is not me.

The point is to get people to mute me, because that is so mature.

                1. You’re literally insane.

                  1. It's the 'shine talking.

              2. Okay, someone on the IT team really does need to figure out what white space characters are allowed in usernames. That shouldn't be possible. For non-tech people, the other Sarcasmic has a character in their name that doesn't display, so while it's a different name, it looks the same.

I had thought the quality of your satirical rants had gone down.

          2. >>I haven't muted anyone and this is the only comment above other than yours

that would mean we're all Tulpa?

            1. "Is this Tulpa in room, right now?"

            2. Potentially, yes. He can impersonate anyone now.

          3. turd lies; it’s all he ever does. turd is a TDS-addled pile of shit and a pathological liar, entirely too stupid to remember which lies he posted even minutes ago, and also too stupid to understand we all know he’s a liar.
If anything he posts isn’t a lie, it’s totally accidental.
turd lies; it’s what he does. turd is a lying pile of lefty shit.

        3. How did you do it? Microspaces? Special characters?

          1. Very convincing, Tulpa. Intelligence was never your strong suit.

      2. Worked for me. One sarc is blocked and one isn’t.

The difference is very subtle and I don’t see it, not that childish message board bullshit is worth spending time on. A childish person with time on their hands.

        1. The good sarc, or the bad sarc?

          1. The only good sarc...

          2. A sarc. Can’t tell them apart by their user name. I suspect it’s the faux sarc but I can’t be certain.

              1. You must be the real sarc and I think you took that the opposite of what I meant. Unless there’s a third one now because the original sarc is still blocked.

      3. They’re all you.

    2. I TAKE NO SIDEZ!!!!

      1. Leftists=malignant infestation

    3. It is Ron DeSantis who personally opened Florida early.
He has already publicly declared there will be no more lockdowns.
He also passed the law that mandatory vaccination is illegal in Florida even for private businesses.
What this New York progressive is going to hate is that Florida has a law that every school has to have an armed guard at all times
So let us hope that she makes the connection that Ron DeSantis is the key to all the reasons she moved to Florida
If she votes for him in the next election then Florida will stay desirable place to live.
If she votes for the Democrat, then you can fully expect all the ills that caused her to flee New York will happen here in Florida

      1. THIS!!

But voting for all those feelgood projects and candidates will eventually pollute Florida as well. They just can’t help themselves- they see a sad scene on TV and reflexively vote to raise YOUR taxes.

        F NY!

        1. “….. but won’t fight for their less fortunate neighbors to have the same.”

Lol. Yeah, she should stay in NY.

  2. Why would lefty Dem voters fleeing Blue states for better living conditions in Red-run states worry Dems? It's part of their strategy to bring their enlightened leadership to Red states, and maybe win a few more Electoral votes (see Georgia, and eventually Texas).

    What could possibly go wrong?

  3. What's up Peanuts? From the socialists at the Wall St Journal:

    Booming U.S. Economy Ripples World-Wide

Surging American demand draws investment from overseas with supply chains working to keep pace and driving up prices

U.S. economic output is set to expand by more than 7% annualized in the final three months of the year, up from about 2% in the previous quarter, according to early output estimates published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. That compares with expected annualized growth of about 2% in the eurozone and 4% in China for the fourth quarter, according to JPMorgan Chase.

Major U.S. ports are processing almost one-fifth more container volume this year than they did in 2019, even as volumes at major European ports like Hamburg and Rotterdam are roughly flat or lag behind 2019 levels. The busiest U.S. container ports are leaping ahead of their counterparts in Asia and Europe in global rankings as volumes surge, according to shipping data provider Alphaliner.

Obviously the Wall Street Journal are Biden bootlickers.

    1. turd lies; it’s all he ever does. turd is a pathological liar and a TDS-addled pile of shit, entirely too stupid to remember which lies he posted even minutes ago, and also too stupid to understand we all know he’s a liar.
If anything he posts isn’t a lie, it’s totally accidental.
turd lies; it’s what he does. turd is a lying pile of lefty shit.

    2. parroting the Federal Reserve, notorious for being the worst economic forecasters in history, yes.

    3. You mean the ports STILL are backed up?

And yes, WSJ does appear to love the taste of leather polish almost as much as you do.

    4. keep sucking your own dick

      1. He’s more focused in the penises of young boys. He proved that by linking that sort of paraphilia here.

    5. U.S. economic output is set to expand by more than 7% annualized in the final three months of the year, up from about 2% in the previous quarter

      Compared to pandemic 2020.

Lies, damned lies, and statistics. Even the WSJ has some propagandists on staff.

    6. Well, for those in the know, the article-writers lean left, and the editorial writers lean right. Slanting stories to appear beneficial to one party, as that one appears to do, is not the sign of neutral reporting.

    7. demand that went unfilled for months and months has this habit of being pent up. Meanwhile, how businesses will never again reopen due to misguided lockdowns.

  4. Let's just be clear that Tupla has yet again created another account mimicking my display name and is desperately trying to convince people that the only way to tell the difference is to mute me.

    Very clever.

    1. What we need is common sense posting control.
Background checks (paid by the applicant), fingerprints (paid for by the applicant), mandatory use of full real name, training in the use of English, US or UK, the differences are fun (paid for by the applicant), and allowing the county sheriff to deny the permit without fee refund for any reason with no appeal process.
Restrict posts to once per day to prevent assault posting, and a central data base of permit holders.
      That should do it.

      1. Or they could simply enforce unique usernames. Try this. Mute the guy you replied to. My comment will not be muted, nor will any of mine in earlier threads.

        1. This is not me. It is Tulpa trying to get people to mute me.

How clever! How long did it take you to come up with that?

          1. Nobody fucking cares, faggot.

          2. It's the most entertaining thing involving you since your last binge drinking and posting session.

            1. Your right. I hope they don’t figure out how to stop the other account.

              1. This is by far the most interesting sarc has ever been

          3. I can’t take the uncertainty, so I’m muting both. I can’t handle it!

        2. Better , mute both sarcs.

            1. Holy crap, that's not what I meant to happen!

        3. How do we know you didn’t create a dummy account so you could play victim? Since you’ve alienated every other poster here except for the marxists and pedophiles.

      2. I'd just like the application process for welfare to mirror the application process for CCW.

Around here, for CCW, you must show up in person at the courthouse, fill out an application that asks several invasive questions, present several forms of government-approved photo ID, get photographed for new picture ID, take the application to the Sheriff's office, get fingerprinted, then have the application and prints submitted to the FBI for a background check. Of course you have to pay nontrivial fees as well.

If you've have committed no crimes and are not deemed mentally unstable, if you're lucky your CCW will be approved and mailed to you in 60-90 days. You get to repeat the process every 5 years.
Since its a welfare application, we could waive the fees, but the fingerprinting, photo ID requirement and issuance, plus a wants&warrants background check seem sensible and not intrusive relative to hoops needed to exercise Constitutionally-guaranteed 2nd rights. As a side effect, the resulting photo ID would be acceptable for voting!

  5. Given that she sent her kids to those very schools, I’d argue she didn’t care about their education either. Glad she woke up.

    1. In addition, she still cannot trace the path from socialist wokism to school closure, even now. She remains an idiot, now only semi-useless.

    2. Chumby- Indeed. SEnding your kids to goverNMEnt indoctrination centers, esp in places like NY, is child abuse.

  6. New York City is a failed state -- and I mean that quite literally. The problem with blue state refugees is that they seldom come to realize that they are in large part to blame for the collapse of once great states across this country. They do not learn their lessons, and bring their voting patterns with them.

    1. Allen Texas the NYC wokes are doing the same thing they did in NYC..wreck the place

  7. I hate to go there but I grew up in Western NY (Rochester area) and it was a middle-class haven, good schools, high tech jobs and well paying, nice suburbs and small towns and villages but over time more and more NYC' types had to move in. Yenta's screaming for more govt, more rules, more "fairness", more what is called "equity" and so on. Both my parents worked "blue collar" jobs and never were much above lower middle class but we had a very good upbringing in a great school district. Then the NYC types showed up and decided to destroy a field across from our house to build low-income public housing in a small village burb. This didn't go over well as the village streets adjacent were all full of ethnic blue collar families who worked hard to give their kids a better life. Now their home values dropped 50% overnight and crime showed up. This is the NYC legacy..they destroyed small towns, manufacturers and created the public sector elite class that is bankrupting the state. So I warn you Floridians, do NOT allow these folks in. They only know how to wreck liberty and freedom. NYC wokes need to be walled off or better yet given incentives to move back to Russia or Eastern Europe where their values seem to be a better fit. They are toxic...totally toxic

    1. You keep saying 'NYC Types'. This feels a bit wrong. Admittedly, I grew up nowhere near NYC geographically or culturally, but "Being miserable and treating other people like dirt is every New Yorker’s God-given right." was at least a popular conception at one point. It seems like Woke New York is wearing the skin suit of the New York I never knew.

      1. New Yorkers used to be assholes, but had grit and a down-to-earth confidence about them. It used to be the case that you could never get your way with a New Yorker. They knew the streets, they knew each other, and they knew themselves.

Nowadays, New Yorkers they are fragile and neurotic authoritarians, in no small part because New York is now largely a cross between the Dominican Republic, Tijuana, China, and the remnants of the Eastern bloc, with a small infusion of midwestern trust fund kids and the millionaire and billionaire elite that rarely touch the ground (literally and figuratively) closed off in their sky havens.

More than half the city is a melting pot of immigrant retards that will never amount to anything no matter how many generations they've lived here; they other half are deluded morons thinking they won't turn into retarded immigrants in their own country in a generation or two.

New York City is dead, and it is never coming back.

        1. That’s actually pretty mild. NYC is worse - they keep destroying the place thinking they are helping, and blame others for their problems.

          1. Yeah, but at least 'Old' New Yorkers had an attitude of "It's our city, we can destroy it if we want to.", obliquely acknowledging that the hicks in flyover country were free to fuck up their own shitholes as they saw fit.

Sounds like what happened in Yonkers, too.

    3. Eastern Europeons? Far more conservative than you're giving them credit for.

        1. No, I think you were right the first time.
Though I have to admit, with shame, that they've had people show out much better against totalitarian neuroticism than we have

    4. And one day you are working for Kodak, and 16 squillion smartphones later you aren't .

I'm an exile from eastern Long Island, non-Hamptons version. I have never been able to afford housing equivalent to what my Dad could afford on the GI Bill, when you could still drive a few miles to potato and duck farms. Many Boomers and 13er/millennials headed south to FL and NC years ago.

      1. I think the older generations who were the first to flee blue states did so to get away from the high taxes and nanny statism that had turned these places into shit holes. Not so sure about the younger ones who decide to move because they see some instagrammer post photos of a Kambucha bar in Omaha and realize their freelancer salary isn’t going to pay the rent in NYC or SF.

      2. I have never been able to afford housing equivalent to what my Dad could afford on the GI Bill

You realize most of those homes were about 850 square feet, right? Post-WW2 suburban homes were tiny, but typically had frames so you could add on to them as desired (carports could be made in to garages, for example).

Your dad wouldn't have been able to afford an 90s-2000s McMansion, either.

  8. Unfortunately, a lot of these fleeing New Yorkers, Californians, etc. will bring their politics that made their previous states unlivable.

  9. What drove her out of the city she and her husband called home for decades was the arbitrary and capricious treatment of students, including her three young children, stuck in public K-12 schools during the pandemic Ron DeSantis.

  10. It's only a worry if they who flee vote Red. Otherwise, the cancer simply spreads.

There should be a mandatory waiting period to vote when changing states.

    1. There used to be. In my state it was six months.

      1. SCOTUS made that 30 days in 1972. Dunn v Blumstein.

For welfare, it was 1969. Shapiro v Thompson

  11. Because progressives are pure evil, they should not be allowed to travel freely! Just listen to Ken ramble about these evil people, incoherently. Fanatical Republicans seems to have a penchant for wanting to send keep people out of "their" territory because anyone looking for a better life must be evil. Right, Ken?

    1. Ken's not here man.

    2. This isn't sarc; I've had that steaming pile of shit muted for weeks. Stinks of commie kid.

      1. I think muting both is probably the best solution for everyone.

        1. Honestly, if AmSoc is spoofing sarc, that's little more than additional proof of how destructive communists are to average communities, online or otherwise.

Sarc really shouldn't be getting shit for what a left-wing cancer cell is writing in his name.

          1. But this is all shit sarc has posted before, nothing new. Can't credit AmSock with full authorship.

          2. It's Tulpa. AmSoc is too stupid. This required a hack of some sorts, because Reason is trying to keep usernames unique. Apparently Tulpa found a way around it. He's clever like that. I guess this is his Festivus present to me. Airing his grievances.

            1. The comment at 5:40 above ("Because progressives...") was authored by a brand new user id (data-author="1141405 "). The comment here at 7:18 was written by a very old user id (data-author="11054 ").

I've been on this site for many years now and my own id is data-author="39007 ", so that 7:18 comment was written by someone here well before I ever signed up.

          3. There's no difference in the content though. Whomever is spoofing sarc is doing a spot on job

        2. Certainly not worth any more time guessing; you're right: *bing*

        3. GG - yup. The only winning move is not to play.

  12. "...Or worse, values it for their own kids, in the form of private pods or putting them into open private schools, but won't fight for their less fortunate neighbors to have the same..."

Yeah, shame on people for valuing their own kids, and you want them to fight *for* the teacher's unions and government schools?
    Why do you hate children?

    1. It wasn't her that voted for DeBlasio, it was all those other douchebags.

    2. stupid progressives dont' even know when they are fucking themselves

  13. These people escaping New York is exactly why we should put a barbed-wire fence around the thing. And California as well. They've finally "had enough", but the fact that they've endured it this long shows their tolerance for shittery is far beyond that which normal people could be expected to endure - and they're just going to bring that tolerance for shittery with them. They're going to vote for the exact same shit that led to what they're fleeing. You're an immigrant now, it's your job to assimilate to our culture, not our job to change our culture to suit you.

    1. A more well-insulated frog moving to a cooler hotplate.

    2. People need to start making life (more of a) living hell for the woke when they move into new areas. Fuck hospitality, they've crossed the line. Make them leave.

  14. Fuck her. None of this is new. She thought NY was great until her life changed enough to conflict with NYC reality.

She lacks empathy and shouldn’t be a journalist.

    1. "I thought my progressive fantasy was amazing until it fucked me"

Everyone leaving California and New York right now.

"But this place I"m going to is full of redneck yucky people so I'm going to keep voting the way I always have"

      Fuck.. Off...

      1. There is much truth to this. The New Yorkers tend to bring their New York attitude with them, not just their voting preferences. It takes a decade or more for them to learn how to treat others properly. Except they tend to congregate and move in flocks, which delays the process. Sometimes indefinitely.

  15. Karol Markowicz's Escape From New York DOES Worry Blue-State America
Unfortunately their reaction will be more lock downs and mandates. What's next? Internal passports and guarded state border crossings? That should stop those escaping tax payers!

    1. Blue-State America will react by working to raise federal taxes and increased fedeal subsidies to the states After all that is what the infrastructure bill and the build back better bill is all about. State and local spending had been 2.6 percent og GDP, it is now 1.6 percent.

While Blue-State America is the primary driver of moving the cost of government to the federal government, Red-State America enjoys the ride. Manchin is hated by Blue-State progressives because he is stopping this trend.

      1. Should 2.6 percent of..
The 2.6 is on infrastructure and it should be 1.4 Percent not 1.6.

    2. They’ll put a wall around NYC to keep people in - a la E Berlin. Or should.

  16. ROFLMAO, she actually said that it’s “ridiculous“ to live anywhere but in New York City, which only applies to about 99.9% of human beings.

This nasty bitch is a perfect example of why Jews are so despised by so many people all over the world.

  17. So, they’re crossing state lines?

    1. It's the red states that are worried about these woke liberals moving next door. We do not want you or your politics.

      1. My politics are probably less woke than your politics.

  18. Welcome to Florida! You should have called me first. The Gardens, huh?

    Ok, first, you should have read this;

When you don't count "dollars spent" as far and away the most important criterion and you compare apples to apples, Florida has the top public schools in the country. So you could have made that move a while back.

As to food.... There are a lot of NYC retirees down here. Upscale restaurants tend to be a bit bland. It took a long while to find Thai that was good. If you want to spend like you are in Manhattan, there are plenty of high-end restaurants in West Palm and Boca Raton. Avoid touristy places on the water. They make their money on the View, not the food.

Up your way, try the Food Shack. It is a hole in the wall strip mall place up toward Jupiter. The owner has several restaurants and tries out new stuff at this little place. I have not been in a while, but it is phenomenal. Gourmet food for lunch at regular restaurant prices. (At least it was for years when I worked up that way)

Christina's Taverna is excellent Greek. Try the grilled octopus. No, seriously.

Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza is excellent for coal fired pizza. Pricy though. Much better than any of the "you have to have this, it is the best" places I have tried in NYC. Yeah, heracy. Sue me.

Toojays is NYC Jewish deli style. Not my favorite because a giant stack of meat on bread is not a sandwich and a black and white cookie is not worth my time, despite the ravings of my Jewish friends.... But their french toast is beyond.

Speaking of french toast... If you have a dog, bring him down to the Nauti Dawg Marina Cafe. Coconut crusted french toast.. the wife loves it, I could take it or leave it... But you bring your dog and they have dog treats and a beautiful view of the marina.

And Cuban. Oh, my word. You will have to learn about cuban food. Way better than you thought. Havana Restaurant on Dixie highway in West Palm. You can get a sandwich through the window when you have been bar hopping. But have a sit down meal and get Churasco, medium rare. And have a cafe Cubano after.

Stuff is more spread out down here. And you have to ask around to find the good stuff, because it isn't always the big, fancy place. But we have immigrants, just like NYC. Except not Italians. So you get Cuban, Brazilian, Jamaican, vietnamese, and New York City refugees (so NY Italian and NY Jewish food).

The Chinese place I liked went under with covid. So you are on your own there.

Oh, and Miami Gardens does not count as suburbs. You have to go to Wellington, Plantation or Davie for that. "Not downtown" and "suburb" are not the same thing.

    1. And get involved at your school. School here is very interactive. And you will need to help steer your kids through the maze of school choice. In elementary you can get a reassignment to a different school. You handled that with your choice of residence. But you also need to be involved with the teachers. Volunteer so you get to know them. Each year you will want to find the right teacher for each kid. Round peg, round hole... That sort of thing.

It is important because when you get to middle school, you probably want to go to a magnet school. They have magnets for all sorts of interests. And different magnets have different advantages for getting into the high school magnets.

In my county, they have one of the top high schools in the country as a magnet.. and two middle schools have feeder programs to get in. You have to have grades and test scores.. and then get through a lottery. But the feeder program gets preference.

So in 5th grade, their FSA testing can actually make a huge difference in where they go to college. It is nuts, but true. So you have that to look forward to. No pressure... Just your 10 year old kid making life altering choices..

Also... They need good grades in high school. Get A's, get free college. No pressure.

Yes, you upgraded massively. Yes, schools on average are much better in Florida than in New York. Yes, the primary factor in success in school is parental involvement (vastly outstripping other influences, even teachers,)

Yes, the humidity in the summer is rough. Give it 2 years... You will adjust. The best part? Wait for a nasty ice storm back home (so much better than a snowstorm, but that works too) and then call your friends from the beach. "Yeah... Ice storm, huh? Power went out and everything? Yeah, it really cooled off down here too. We are at the beach, but I don't know if I am even going in the water... Well, the kids are swimming... But I might not..."

      1. With little kids you will want a membership at the West Palm Beach Zoo. Go ahead and buy that for the family. Next summer get the pass for 5 different parks, discounted for members. Gets you Zoo Miami, Museum of Science and Discovery, Lion Country Safari, west Palm Zoo and the planetarium for the summer.

Living in Gardens you might want to get a pass to Rapids Water Park. Your kids are the right age to start enjoying, but they are not big enough for half of it.

        1. So there you go... We have filled out your dance card. Welcome south. Kindly check the new York at the door. You can have it back when you visit friends and family.

  19. "Karol Markowicz's Escape From New York Should Worry Blue-State America"

Actually, it should worry Red-State and Purple-State America. I have seen the damage done to Colorado in the last 3 decades.

  20. The problem here is the same as it has always been. These blue state cockroaches will flee the place they've turned into a shithole and fight as hard as they can to turn their new place into the same shithole they just fled. They're like a plague.

  21. It's actually their new neighbors that should worry, because these asshole will vote for the very same thing that made them flee their old place. We all know this is true.
