Completely Replace Fossil Fuels Within 20 Years? A Soho Forum Debate
Jeff Nesbit and Bjorn Lomborg on the threat of climate change and what should be done about it
If governments don't completely eliminate fossil fuels by 2040, society is doomed, says Jeff Nesbit, author of This is the Way the World Ends.
That kind of apocalyptic rhetoric "costs us trillions, hurts the poor, and fails to fix the planet," says Bjorn Lomborg, author of False Alarm.
Are fossil fuels an imminent threat to human life, or are attempts to eliminate them more destructive? That was the subject of an Oxford-style online Soho Forum debate hosted on Sunday, October 18th, 2020.
Arguing in favor of the complete elimination of fossil fuels over 20 years was Nesbit, the executive director of Climate Nexus. He went up against Lomborg, the president of the Copenhagen Consensus Center. The debate was moderated by Soho Forum director Gene Epstein.

Gotta say...poster lives the gimmick.
Best stuff I've read here all day
It really does sum up the whole debate quite nicely.
Big Fusion has assured us it will be ready by then.
Why wait 20 years? Earth will be an uninhabitable hell 10 years from now if we do nothing! We only had 12 years left 2 years ago!
If Basement Bunker Biden succeeds as the Trojan horse for the socialist Kween Kamala, the world will be destroyed within 4 years.
No time to worry about global climate warming change until after the fascists have been dealt with.
20 years, no way.
50 years, maybe.
40-years later, Trillions wasted and the WACK-JOBS are still saying everything is worse, worse, worse.... Common-Sense; Let's just all pretend your B.S. isn't B.S. by your OWN FREAK-EN CLAIMS; We haven't DONE ANYTHING but waste money and made everything WORSE --- So; FU, nothing is going to 'fix' your idiocy....
And one final note - climate history shows the fastest climate cooling was during WWII when more CO2 was being released than any previous time in history so blow it out your *ss.
Your citations that climate change is anything but a natural occurrence fell off.
Cavemen caused the Earth to move form the last Ice Age to the current great climate period.
The Vikings had to drive SUVs for generations before they could build farmsteads in Greenland.
Trump needs to stay out of Wisconsin! Trump turds pack in like sardines all defiant with the masks just like Trump! Trumps filling our hospitals and his dumb ass supporters are helping! DUMP TRUMP! Republicans against Trump.......VISIT HERE FULL DETAIL.
The bots are emulating Jeff and Buttplug. The "intelligence" part of Artificial Intelligence seems to be a failure.
How many small and large nuclear reactors would be needed to completely replace fossil fuels? 500? 1000?
There's no way that you'd be able to approve, construct and activate that many plants in just twenty years.
And what would happen to air travel if fossil fuels were forbidden?
there are 4 jet fuel alternatives already approved by the FAA that do not require fossil fuels. find a new straw man.
Al Gore told us about the same doom an gloom in 20 years and he did it over 20 years ago.
I only wish these alarmists were correct I want to retire to the beach and it would be easier if the beach came to me.
Since this was an Oxford-style debate, audience votes should have been taken both before and after the debate and the "winner" is the person who moved the most participants in his/her direction. So who won? What were the results?
Okay, yes the results are posted in one of the article links - if you dig hard enough. Come on, though. This basic reporting. Put the important parts in the article. Don't make me dig.
For those who don't want to dig, the pre-vote was 13% yes, 60% no, 27% undecided. The post-vote was 13% yes, 87% no, 0% undecided. In other words, no one with an established opinion changed their minds but Lomborg convinced all the undecideds to join his side.
with that kind of bias even in the pre-vote, you gotta wonder where they grabbed the audience...... an oil rig?
What kind of lunaticish bias does it take to make a person believe the world will definitely start falling apart in less than 10-years? And what kind arrogant ignorance does it take that same person to believe even if such an absurdity did come to pass there was anything the government could do about it.
Let me guess; The ability to exit the realities of life altogether and live in the delusional land of Hollywood's big screen?
"Praise the almighty Government Gods; sacrifice man before the almighty Gov-God in quest of saving the planet.", You people are sick in the head with lunaticish biases - seek help for your disorder.
was your intent to just spout nonsense? i did not assert a single thing you just said. not that we are doomed in 10 years, not that the government is the solution.... not whatever the fuck Hollywood has to do with it.

The only way to achieve that goal is to go nuclear. The power paranoia freaks will never allow that.
Ha!
Tee hee.
