Kurt Loder on Why the Oscars Always Suck but Movies Are Great: Podcast
Reason's movie reviewer talks about why The Post sucked, why Lady Bird and Get Out rocked, and where #MeToo has gone too far.

Legendary journalist—and Reason's resident movie reviewer—Kurt Loder talks with Nick Gillespie about this year's Academy Awards, which will take place on Sunday, March 4, starting at 8:00 P.M. E.T.
The Rolling Stone and MTV veteran discusses why he loved best-picture nominees Lady Bird and Get Out but found The Post a total snooz-fest; ruminates on the singular career of best-actor nominee Gary Oldman, who has played Winston Churchill, Sid Vicious, and Lee Harvey Oswald; describes how Wonder Woman and Black Panther benefited from having a female and African-American director, respectively; and explains why he thinks Harvey Weinstein should burn in hell but the #MeToo movement has gone too far when it comes to James Franco. Loder also talks about—and welcomes!—the end of baby boomer cultural hegemony, how horror and monster movies captured his generation's heart, and what a recent biography of Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner got wrong.

I haven't watched the Oscars -or pretty much any awards show- since 2013? I used to love them, but even for me, they've become too self indulgent, and you know this year is going to be bad with the recent shooting, etc. I do hope 'The Big Sick' wins Best Original Screenplay though.
I also agree that 'Lady Bird' is the best picture. So Kurt has excellent tastes.
I like the Oscars and thought the Razzies was a great idea too.
Looking forward to the upcoming Tarantino project on the Manson killings. I have an unhealthy obsession with the Manson Family circus, I'm afraid....
Movies are typically bad and the oscars are horrible.
Except that all the movies that win are movies almost no one has seen. It's awards for pure self satisfaction. More people have opinion about the social and political import of these films than the people who've seen them. It's silly.
Except that the quality of a movie has nothing to do with how popular it is among the knuckledragging dumbfucks who comprise most of the population, otherwise it'd be Marvel and Michael Bay all the damn time.
Is there another industry that gives out awards like Hollywood? Why might that be?
It's a lie, the movies suck sewage through a bendy straw.

Get Out wasn't great. It was anti-white garbage. Birth of a Nation in reverse.
