The Parkland Shooting Screw-Ups Go All the Way to the Top: Podcast
On today's podcast: Mona Charen gets booed, the gun control debate reignites, public sector unions suck, and Olympic curling is surprisingly awesome.

In today's Reason Podcast, Nick Gillespie, Eric Boehm, Robby Soave, and yours truly discuss Mona Charen getting booed at CPAC and the strange new respect she's now getting from the readers of The New York Times, plus why the National Front scion Marion LePen is not a "classical liberal."
We also take on Donald Trump's claim that if he'd been on the scene in Parkland during the shooting, "I really believe I'd run in there even if I didn't have a weapon," plus the Parkland sheriff's belief that "lions don't care about the opinions of sheep." What would it be like, we wonder, to live in a world where "the authorities [can] just stop someone who has guns and is weird"—and how much trouble would the Reason staff be if that were true?
We also dig into Janus v. ASFCME, the Supreme Court case that may determine the fate of public sector unions in the United States, and we discuss why it's coming so soon after 2016's Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association.
Stay to the end for the moment when Eric Boehm, Reason's resident curler, describes the inevitable glorious movie adaptation of this year's Olympic curling Miracle on Ice and manages to get Soave to care about a sport for a couple of minutes.
A few handy links from today's conversation:
"Curling Is the Closest the Olympics Ever Get to Anarchy," by Eric Boehm: The culture of curling rejects appeals to authority and encourages civility even in the midst of intense competition. That's a lesson for American politics.
"Doe-Eyed Youngsters for My Preferred Policies," by J.D. Tuccille: The benefits and flaws of policy disputes get sidelined when activist movements adopt kids as human shields.
"Monday's Big Supreme Court Case Will Decide the Future of Public Sector Unions," by Eric Boehm: Janus v. AFSCME could end mandatory public-sector union dues. Counterintuitively, it might strengthen the labor movement too.
"Broward Co. Sheriff Israel: 'Not My Responsibility' That His Employee Failed to Confront Parkland Shooter," by Nick Gillespie: "I gave him a gun. I gave him a badge. I gave him the training. If he didn't have the heart to go in, that's not my responsibility."

The piece of garbage Sheriff has done more to help promote the 2nd Amendment then I ever could. Your department did nothing to stop the shooter when it was reported to you 39 times, your department had officers waiting outside while the shooter was mowing down kids, AND your department prevented EMTs from treating the injured, when they could have possibly saved one of the 17 lives.
We are all supposed to turn over all guns to trash human beings like yourself?
The contest for 2018's Worst Person of the Year is really heating up, and it's not even March yet!
I'm making over $7k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life.
This is what I do... http://www.onlinecareer10.com
And it looks like we have another contestant, right here!
FBI appears to have done nothing with 2 separate warnings. The Sheriff's department numerous issues with this individual nothing done in advance and pathetic response as well.
This is the argument for 2nd amendment and carry permits for all.
Only a fool would trust the FBI that is too preoccupied by politics and the Sheriff's department that is only there to collect a paycheck and a pension.
WHERE. IS. MATT?!?!?!?
Are you Sirius?
I DON'T WANT KATHERINE'S GLIB JOKES. PEOPLE ARE HURTING.
KMW's glib anarchism is the only reason to listen the podcast. Well, that and trying to determine the number of times Suderman was shoved in his locker in high school based on the frequency of his geek references.

I thought they said last week they weren't gonna try this again without Matt. Nick couldn't moderate a ham sandwich!
WHERE MY FIFTH COLUMN PODCAST AT???
If this keeps up I'm not sending them ANY money.
Oh man, I hope Kmele didn't finally realize he's too good for us.
He's been pretty flaky since becoming a father. I blame child labor laws.
What no one is pointing out is that the school was a Gun Free zone. The cops were merely following the law.
I didn't realize Florida had so many "Don't do your Job" zones for police either.
They really let loose the propaganda hounds today with excuses for why the SRO could not try and stop the shooter.
I just saw Nikolas Cruz's photo for the first time. Does anyone else get a Fetal Alcohol Syndrome vibe from him?
Now that you mention it....
When seconds count the cops are only yards away hiding behind their cars.

What's astounding is this core group of liberals who continue to defend the Sheriff no matter how many damning facts come out. Young David Hogg was on Twitter standing up for Israel and pointing the finger at Trump (guess Hogg agrees with his Sheriff that he's done such an "amazing job")... libs all over the echo-chamber sites continue to insist there's nothing the FBI or local law enforcement could have done, no matter how many online threats Cruz made. Their agenda-pushing here is as transparent as it is ridiculous.

Squirrels must be feeling frisky today [they've eaten two of my comments and doubled yours], but I agree. I expect the outcome of this will be no different than Sandy Hook. Increased NRA membership and gun sales. And the progs and their media will just go tisk tisk tisk and repeat their same mistakes over and over [that Einstein definition of insanity comes to mind].
I'm not even a gun guy, I just hate b.s. of any kind. It's clear what the spin strategy is, keep the object (rifle) the sole focus to keep people thinking that perhaps we have enough laws already to stop mass shootings, they just need to be enforced. Admitting inconvenient stuff like the FBI being alerted numerous times goes against the grain.
I think the most hilarious moment came during that grotesque CNN thing where the Sherrif told the NRA lady she was wrong about his troops having visited Cruz 39 times -- even though she was quoting CNN reporting. Sums up the entire absurd theater.

""lions don't care about the opinions of sheep"
Subtle plagiarism: The original, and much more eloquent and telling: "Aquila muscas non capit." Which translates, "The eagle does not catch flies." Often attributed to Erasumus, it is more likely an Ancient Roman proverb. It generally is taken to mean important people do not bother with or attend to trivial matters.
However, the truth is the speaker himself is a fly, who seems to have ignored his highest priority: the safety of children in Parkland, FL, schools.
