The Independent-Centrist 2020 Unicorn: New at Reason

After the smoke cleared from the 2018 midterms, political pundits and would-be candidates wasted little time plunging straight into the offseason of fantasy presidential politics. But before we waste much more time dreaming up unity tickets and independent billionaires and brand new political parties, argues Matt Welch, a reality check is in order. Americans motivated by partisan fear are not good audiences for nontraditional political pitches, and the two legacy parties are doing what they can to keep it that way.
