Video Shows What Really Happened When an Iowa Officer Accidentally Shot a Woman

Officer Jesse Hill said he mistakenly shot and killed a woman when her dog attacked him. Body cam footage shows him slipping on ice.

Body camera footage released on Wednesday does not confirm that account, but it shows that the officer slipped on the ice while discharging his weapon.

In January 2015, Burlington Police Officer Jesse Hill responded to a domestic violence call at the home of 34-year-old Autumn Steele. Steele was reportedly seen hitting her husband in front of their house. Hill said the couple's German Shepherd, Sammy, jumped on him and bit him after he approached Steele. He said he mistakenly shot Steele in front of her 3-year-old son while attempting to shoot the dog. She later died as a result of her injuries.

At the time, the Burlington Police Department released a 12-second body camera video of the incident, which shows Hill shooting without warning. He can be heard saying, "Get your dog," but the video does not show Sammy jumping on the officer. The police report did not include statements from witnesses who said Sammy was not displaying aggressive behavior. Although Hill reported "the sensation of being bit" in a write-up of the incident, medical records and a picture of Hill's leg taken at the hospital showed no puncture wounds. Hill nevertheless was cleared in the shooting.

Steele's family accused police of using Sammy as a scapegoat and demanded more footage. Last month, after a three-year legal battle, Judge James Gritzner of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa ordered the city to release the entire video, which was made available on Wednesday. It shows Hill slipping on ice as his weapon fires. When Hill picks himself back up, the camera shows Sammy standing behind Steele's son. Hill is heard worrying about "going to prison."

The video is available via the Des Moines Register. It may be disturbing to viewers.

Earlier this year, the city agreed to pay Steele's family $2 million to settle a civil lawsuit.

    Two million from the taxpayers, the dog survived, the cop lied on official reports, it only took three years and a court order, the bastard goes completely free, and the police still don't understand why no one trusts them.

  • Hugh Akston||

    I blame #BLM

  • Longtobefree||

    Sure, why not?
    But it has to be in collusion with Trump's Russian evil twin brother.

  • Agammamon||

    I'm pretty sure the Clinton Foundation is involved somehow.

  • JeremyR||

    No one? People on the right will still slobber over the police any chance they get, and so will the NRA

  • Diane Reynolds (Paul.)||

    That's not slobber.

  • Cynical Asshole||

    Then what is it? Is it smegma? It's smegma, isn't it.

    People on the right?

    In Chicago, a multi-million dollar payout for a wrongful conviction/shooting where the officer walks free is known as 'Thursday'.

  • Michael S. Langston||

    I lol'd - thank you for that

  • Agammamon||

    Not 'Tuesday'? People always miss an opportunity for a Bison reference.

  • MoreFreedom||

    I admire my grandfather. He didn't believe anything he read, and only half what he saw.

    I don't believe anyone in the government, I prefer to see the evidence. Seems to me, this police officer owes the public $2 million, and those covering it up, need to get pink slips at a minimum, and preferably prosecution for obstruction of justice.

    I am glad the dog was unhurt.

    *facepalm* But who pulled the trigger?

  • Furd Turgeson||

    Too active. Try "The trigger was pulled"

    ice called him fat

    That's the point, are journalists afraid the cops will shoot them if they don't write like autistic seals?

  • Hank Phillips||

    The cop killed the lady for no reason. Surely reporters can take a hint.

  • MatthewSlyfield||

    Nope.

    One of the rules of gun safety is to keep your finger off the trigger until you are going to fire. Either he was already planning to shoot something, or he was handling his gun unsafely. And he lied about having a reason to shoot something...

    Hill is heard worrying about "going to prison."

    Hill must not have been a cop very long.

    But I will say he showed the experience of a veteran in the coverup.

    *boom*

    I'm here all week.

  • AustinRoth||

    I bet he had some help from his more experienced fellow cops in creating the false narrative.

  • TrickyVic (old school)||

    The dog did it is an elementary school excuse. I think it would have been better if experienced cops helped.

  • Cynical Asshole||

    Hill is heard worrying about "going to prison."

    Didn't he learn anything from his police training? He should've known that wouldn't happen, especially when there's a dog around to blame everything on.

    Hopefully he'll be going to prison now, although I highly doubt it.

  • Get To Da Chippah||

    This would be textbook manslaughter if it wasn't a king's man.

  • Michael S. Langston||

    Absolutely - it's so f$*ked up now, people applaud when a cop loses their job after a bad shooting.

    Always good to remind us that anyone else would be sent to prison for this.

    In fact, some states allow for lethal force to protect others, not just yourself. If this had been someone just trying to help and they never lied but stated 'accidental discharge due to falling on the ice', they would go to prison for a long time as examples must be set.

    It would also be used as definitive proof that all gun owners are angry, trigger happy criminals with no training and this is precisely why gun control is required.

    To prove it, they'll rewrite murder laws to be able to convict on 2nd degree in the future. See mandatory minimums for having in your home a legal, but unlicensed firearm in NYC.

    So sure you have the legal right to purchase, use and carry firearms, but if you do and a cop is nervous, you might die and if you do anything remotely like this, your life will be over.

    As in the end those people know they cannot change the 2nd amendment anytime soon, but they can and are working very hard to make exercising those rights so untenable to be able to accomplish the same thing they want thru gun control laws.

    In less than 5 minutes, I found one guy selling 40mm grenades for $325, and a stand-alone grenade launcher for $2400. I guess you would have to get a NFA license to make it all legal, though. You really can find just about anything on the internets.

  • Hank Phillips||

    You left out the asset forfeiture provisions...

  • Michael S. Langston||

    Agreed

  • AlmightyJB||

    And then there is this cop

  • AlmightyJB||

    What about this cop?

  • Hank Phillips||

    The GOP platform is dedicated to First Responders™ so since this Iowa idiot didn't shoot a politician or bureaucrat he'll prolly get a paid vacation and a medal for killing a taxpayer. Look at how long they covered this up already!

  • Jerry B.||

    Well, at least he wasn't trying to do a backflip while disco dancing.

  • majil||

    All cops deserve to be shot in the face

  • majil||

    This cock sucker got away with murder. Never ,ever call the fucking pigs for any reason .
    cheer when they are shot in the face

  • JBSparks||

    Because there are no bad apples in your demographic?

  • 10mm||

    Just another reason to #abolishICE, amirite?

  • JBSparks||

    Clearly more concerned about his fate than the victim he killed. The cop proved to be a liar and his profanity couldn't have been uglier. A person of higher moral quality may have kept his gun holstered but, the cops can only hire from the general population where you'll find most are foul-mouthed liars. This community should have been penalized more than 2 million.

  • Fist of Etiquette||

    However, his comments following the shooting showed he is fearing arrest over what happened. "I pulled my gun and shot it and i hit her,' 'oh, my god, no. Oh, f---, tim. S---, tim. I`m f--------going to prison, Tim.'

    Oh, sweetie. Of course you're not.

  • Cy||

    Why did he have his gun out to begin with? In what reality did he needs his gun out?

  • Jgalt1975||

    'Cause that dawg needed killin', boy!
