I just came across the term, in the statute I mentioned in the required guns on planes post, so I thought I'd note it: As you might gather, it's not just a pistol that's especially pistoly—it's a flare gun invented by U.S. Navy Lt. Edward W. Very.
UPDATE: As Charles Wheelock (speaking of gun-related names) put it on Facebook, "So gun. Much fire."
