Thomas Massie's Enemies Are Attacking Him With an Unfair Accusation

Partisan political actors have seized on a vague and unsupported "hush money" allegation.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R–Ky.) is fighting for his political life. Next week, voters in his district will decide whether to retain the long-serving libertarian Republican—or whether to fall in line with President Donald Trump, who is furious with Massie for opposing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the Trump tariffs, and the administration's increasingly neoconservative foreign policy agenda. Trump has endorsed Massie's opponent, Ed Gallrein.

In their quest to unseat Massie, the congressman's enemies have surfaced a desperate, unfair, and vague accusation of personal wrongdoing. Cynthia West, a former girlfriend of Massie, has alleged that he paid her $5,000 in "hush money." That term now appears in countless headlines alongside Massie's name: "Thomas Massie's ex accuses him of hush money offer," writes Axios. Other headlines note that Massie denies the charge. But we know how this game is played: The mere hint of impropriety may very well taint him in the eyes of the voters.

Yet those who are foisting this hush money accusation on the public are engaged in pathological dishonesty. There is simply no substance to it. This is a filthy political hit job designed to punish one of the only Republicans who voted in line with candidate Trump's pledged political agenda—"no new wars"—rather than the big government monstrosity this second term has wrought.

"Hush money" is an extremely negative term. When hush money is offered, people assume it is because the person offering it has something to hide. There is no evidence whatsoever that this is the case here. On the contrary, Massie claims that the $5,000 to $10,000 he gave West was merely a gift to help her pay for various expenses.

"All of the claims of inappropriate conduct are false," said Massie in a statement to Reason. "I've never offered anyone money in exchange for their silence."

Here are the facts. In June 2024, Massie's wife, Rhonda, passed away suddenly. They had been married for 35 years, and her unexpected death left the congressman devastated. He has since remarried. In the interim, Massie dated West. That relationship lasted from September 2024 until early 2025, and was mostly long-distance, since West lived in Florida, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer.

In order to be closer to each other, Massie suggested West move to Washington, D.C., and apply for an open job position in the office of Rep. Victoria Spartz (R–Ind.). According to Massie, he also gave her between $5,000 to $10,000 to help with moving costs and to pay other bills.

"She represented to me that her estranged husband was giving her no child support or alimony," Massie told The Enquirer.

After they broke up in January 2025, West gave him back some of the money—as much as $5,000, according to Massie.

West had obtained a temporary, 90-day position in Spartz's office. When that time expired, her contract was not renewed. West characterizes the matter differently, saying she was "fired." She filed a wrongful termination lawsuit, which the Office of Congressional Workplace Rights offered to settle for $60,000. She refused, since the money came with a nondisclosure agreement, which is standard practice for congressional employee disputes.

West now claims that Massie's gift to her was intended to persuade her to drop the lawsuit, though this does not make logical sense, since Massie gave her the money before she moved to Washington, D.C.

When reached for comment, West directed me to a spokesperson. This spokesperson did not respond to questions.

Spartz denied West's characterization of events and added that she "considers Thomas Massie to be one of the strongest supporters of women in Congress and a defender of women's rights among her GOP colleagues."

And that's it. These facts are not really in dispute: Massie and West dated; Massie gave her between $5,000 and $10,000 during their relationship in part to help her get on her feet in D.C.; West took a job with Spartz; they broke up; West gave back some or all of the money; West lost her job and sued Spartz's office. Now West claims that Massie offered her money—much less money than Spartz's office had offered—to drop the lawsuit against Spartz, when she could have just taken 10 times the amount by agreeing to the settlement.

There just isn't really a there there.

Such a trivial dispute would hardly even merit becoming a national story, but enemies of Massie have seized upon it. His 2012 Republican primary opponent, attorney Marc Carey, published a video interview with West on his website. Two other former rivals, Eric Deters and Todd McMurtry, also promoted West's story on social media.

"The contrived and false deposition released just one week before my election was conducted by Carey who lost to me in 2012, in the law office of McMurtry who lost to me in 2020, and posted immediately by Deters who lost to me 2024," wrote Massie in a statement.

From there, large pro-Trump X accounts began circulating it. MAGA activist Laura Loomer, the ultimate Trump loyalist and his informal attack dog on social media, has worked tirelessly to spread the hush money line on X. Will Chamberlain, a pro-Israel national conservative, is also involved. (It's worth mentioning that three pro-Israel billionaires, Miriam Adelson, Paul Singer, and Paul Johnson, have spent millions to defeat Massie.)

Loomer's frenetic posts on X are written in the style of someone who has uncovered some shocking truth. Having discovered corroborating evidence that Massie and West did in fact date—a detail that is not in dispute whatsoever, and has nothing to do with the alleged payment—Loomer concludes that it looks like Massie "has some sexual skeletons in his own closet." This is a self-discrediting assertion.

Partisan political operatives are attempting to spin a mundane pattern of facts into a bona fide scandal. It's as shameful as it is unsurprising; whether it will succeed is another matter.

Massie will square off against Gallrein on May 19. The district is heavily Republican, and the winner of the primary is all but guaranteed to win the general election. Reason's editor in chief, Katherine Mangu-Ward, recently spent time with Massie and wrote about his campaign for The New York Times.

He falsely accused innocent people of being pedophiles.

My empathy is gone. Fuck him.

    1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 months ago

      This.

He has chosen to spend his year hyping the epstein files while falsely accusing people on the congressional floor so he had immunity.

      He is ineffective.

He didn't try to help with DOGE. He didnt help dismantle USAID. He has not helped investigate fraud. He has not helped reform deep state abuses, often defending those who abused their offices since it was against trump.

He has done two things. Scream epstein. Scream Iran. Nothing that pushes anyone towards liberty.

And a lot of this seems to try to gain a vote share from democrats knowing he will lose a primary. Saving his own skin. Despite him being well past the three term pledge he ran on.

Sure he claims he introduced the bills on term limits. But he has never tried to get it passed.

      1. mr simple   2 months ago

Right, better to vote in the empty suit cuck to support the war party. Gotta support Daddy Trump and his totally Republican agenda of more war and the greatest deficit spending ever. Many people are saying this.

Trump tried for modest cuts last year. The entire democrat party, RINO’s, etc. stopped him. So don’t blame Trump.

    2. Leo Kovalensky II   2 months ago

Massie read the names of people he believed should be investigated based on what he was able to see in the unredacted Epstein Files.

So the statement is true and you're trying to spin it because guilty until proven innocent is the Communist way, and that is exactly what that accusation is.

Keep in mind that Leo is a TDS-addled steaming pile of lying shit.

    3. NM Dave   2 months ago

If he accused ANYONE remotely associated with Trump of being a pedophile, he's right, and you're probably one too. Protecting pedophiles is what pedophiles do.

      1. SCOTUS gave JeffSarc a big sad   2 months ago

Yes, that’s what democrats do. Like when California reduced statutory rape from a felony to a misdemeanor last year. Or how democrats as a group are constantly protecting illegals that are trafficking in minors.

Yep, democrats like them young, and often mutilated, right Dave?

Is it more or less credible than Ford robby?

Ford: didnt know time, location, who was there.

    Maybe Carrol?

Carrol: didnt know time, no witnesses and evidence all against her claims.

Meanwhile. This one has time, witnesses, locations, employment agreement, a firing, a congressional settlement offer.

    1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 months ago

That's a shame, because the accusation itself—while still decidedly unproven—is not without supporting evidence. It is much more difficult to dismiss now that we know the name of the person making it.

      https://reason.com/2018/09/16/brett-kavanaugh-accuser-christine-ford/

Also notice how robby goes through all the claims.

Then robby piled on with the other ridiculous accusers.

      https://reason.com/2019/09/16/brett-kavanaugh-new-york-times-sexual-misconduct/

Counting more than a half dozen articles robby. Will you do the same against Massie robby?

    2. Zeb   2 months ago

From what I know (which is limited, I will admit), neither seems particularly credible. Both have obvious political motivations and awfully convenient timing and little to back up any actual evidence of anything I'd consider improper behavior.

      1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 months ago

Difficulty, she started her claims before Massie even had an opponent based on the timeline.

At a minimum the attempted congressional agreement should be released, even if she never signed it due to the NDA requirement. 60k seems like quite a lot to offer for a nothing story.

        1. Zeb   2 months ago

Sure, let's find out about the NDA and the $60k. Not clear that it has anything to do with Massie.

          1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 months ago

Then Massie should be at the forefront of calling for it to be released. Just like he was with the epstein files.

            1. mr simple   2 months ago

Were you dropped on your head as a child? Not only are your allegations not true, none of what you say actually follows from your assertions.

      2. mad.casual   2 months ago

We've had so much "I was raped through a broken glass coffee table in a department store dressing room by a group of drunken guys 30 yrs. ago." that nobody can look the other way at a legit he said/she said.

Where's a group of "urban youths" trying to steal a rideshare bike from a pregnant nurse, that we should all ignore for its lack of newsworthiness, when you need it?

  3. MWAocdoc   2 months ago

Massie has survived worse political hit-jobs before and will probably survive the latest one. I wonder what it feels like to be a failed Trump loyalist attack dog. Maybe JesseAz and damikesc can tell us.

    1. Stupid Government Tricks   2 months ago

Not a chance. They don't have "true" and "false" in their lexicons, only "Trump" and "other".

Principles? Not in their lexicon either. Rebuttal? Nary hide nor hair.

      TDS is bipartisan.

      1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 months ago

Poor sarc Jr. You've been chomping at the but havent you.

Unlike you I actually criticize people when I disagree.

For example trump gave a pro china purchase of farmland just today. Im against it.

See, not hard for honest people.

Yet you are still butt hurt you were proven retarded on economics and debase yourself attack those who were correct by becoming sarc Jr.

Notice neither of you retards are countering accusations. Youre just screaming "trump cultist" like retards. Lol.

Trump doesnt even have anything to do with this story retards. All of it is coming primarily from this woman who has been seeking compensation for months. His opponent in the primary os the one to make it visible. Weird that Massie never did despite his year long epstein campaign. Probably why Massie ignored the swallwell and Gallego stories.

        1. Leo Kovalensky II   2 months ago

        2. middlefinger   2 months ago

I’m against the farmland purchases. He’s trying to keep farmers (a constituency) land values up.- A lot of corporate speculators in land too.

It’s Orwellian to say China is our biggest threat-then have them corner our food supply. There are no land markets in China.

          1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 months ago

Yeap. Im completely against his views on this subject. Oddly his past statements warn against it as well.

Giving the ability of a rival to control critical infrastructure is not a smart idea. See smelters in Britain.

    2. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 months ago

Amazing how quickly you you run to protect your idols.

Youre just a complete failure. You know how it feels buddy.

Not shocked you defend Massie in all things, such as the act called out above. Because you dont actually have real principles.

      1. MWAocdoc   2 months ago

I'm proud to be a liberty cultist. I'm pretty sure you should not be proud of being a Trump cultist ...

        1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 months ago

          Youre not one though.

Youre just such a midwit you think you are.

All the midwits seem to only have this one argument. Never anything intelligent to say. Almost like a cult of midwits.

Apparently also illiterate as I have a criticism in this very thread. Lol.

Sorry, did your mom eat a lot of lead paint chips when she was pregnant with you? Just wondering how you became so retarded. All of your comments in this thread reek of desperation. I don't know if you're twisting the facts of this case to try to convince others or yourself.

I thought people were accusing him of being a sexual deviant?

    1. Leo Kovalensky II   2 months ago

Ironic, huh? The same people who give Trump a pass after being convicted of falsifying business records to hide a hush money payment of $130,000, are saying that a different person who hasn't been convicted of anything is tied up in a $5000 hush money scandal and should be voted out of office.

$5000 isn't enough money to keep anyone quiet.

      1. Don't look at me! ( Is the war over yet?)   2 months ago

So on top of it all, he’s revealed to be a cheapskate.

        1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 months ago

The claim is he offered her 5k from untraceable cow money.

      2. Zeb   2 months ago

I can't say I know anything for sure, but I've seen it suggested that the $5000 was to help her get a better attorney for the ugly divorce she was going through at the time. Has anyone seen this NDA and it's terms? Is there evidence that it was actually anything to do with the personal relationship?

        1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 months ago

          The story.

Massie was dating this person. Used his connections to get her a job with another rep, a friend of massies. This in itself is unethical, using connections so his gf can get a taxpayer funded job in d.c. with him.

Then when she refused some aspects of the relationship, she says sex, Massie got outraged and broke it off she was let go by the rep, again Massie friend, shortly after. This in itself is unethical.

So two actions that are basically and confirmed. Both unethical. Both behaviors Massie pretends to be against. Using taxpayer dollars, rep staff, to fund benefits for congress. This is unethical.

Even without the sordid sex stuff there is a lot of unethical actions here.

Now given Massie has been on his epstein tirade for months including accusing innocent people, demanding releases... he should be demanding the release of the proposed settlement. He is not. Instead he has been publicly stating the attacks are from his opponent and pro Israel voices. This is unethical.

So the known actions involved here points to many instances of unethical behavior for Massie based on his supposed ethics. Even absent the sex commentary.

          1. Leo Kovalensky II   2 months ago

What about this, even if true, makes Massie subject to being voted out of office coming from a person who supports Trump of all people? How do these ethics claims compare to all of the claims, and convictions, revolving around Trump?

            1. Don't look at me! ( Is the war over yet?)   2 months ago

Cases against Trump? Like that lawsuit accusing him of loan fraud when he borrowed against Mar a Lago?

Please tell me how you think that was legitimate. Pretty please.

          2. Quicktown Brix   2 months ago

So two actions that are basically and confirmed.

Except for the confirmed part. Not even the accuser is saying she was fired for the break up.

Even without the sordid sex stuff there is a lot of unethical actions here.

What is the sordid sex stuff? All we've heard is he wanted to do things that made her uncomfortable. In other words, he's a typical guy.

Well when Massie doesn't win by a land-slide I'll have to admit to myself there is far more "Trump Loyalists" than REAL Republicans left.

You morons picked the wrong dog to start a fight with because Massie was the one who stood up against the passing of the Cares Act and it's Anti-Vote passing method. Trump pushed it and signed which scored him entirely 'negative' (like the [D]emon-crap he once was) points.

    1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 months ago

And what has he accomplished? For the last year it was smearing people for the epstein files.

      Also...

The House of Representatives did not hold a recorded roll call vote on the CARES Act (H.R. 748), so no members formally voted "no."

Massie is very well aware a single objection in the House stops a roll call vote. Yet..

      1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 months ago

Sorry. Voice votes. A single objection. He and MTG objected often.

So despite being loud about forcing a roll call vote, he never objected when it mattered.

      2. TJJ2000   2 months ago

I'd say the 'smearing' campaign is more-so the other direction now and far-more-so unaccredited.

There isn't much 'smearing' from Massie that I don't agree with. The Cares Act was spot-on a wild disgrace. The OBBA, while it did do some good cuts, was a lacking attempt to do the real cutting (just as Massie described it) needed, etc, etc, etc.

So Zepphie here discovers the Christian National Socialists only want to exterminate about 3% more people than he (assuming he says zero), so that makes them friends, buddies, pals and allies with an extra 77% credit toward possible differences elsewhere in the platform comparisons. With friends like Zepphie, Hitler and Eichmann, freedom needs no enemies.

God damn. What has happened here? I've been away from the Reason comments for a while, with a few exceptions. Do most of you even consider yourselves libertarian any more? Massie tried to accomplish what Trump campaigned on, before he did a 180 on no new wars, draining the swamp and releasing the Epstein files, lowering spending, etc. Now you all (with a few exceptions) seem to be cheering on more wars, more spending (as long as the bill is introduced by a Republican Congress), "Believe all Women," etc. You've become the mirror image of the stupid Dems who say, "Vote Blue, No Matter Who." As long as Trump says it, it's good enough for you.

You're cheering on baseless, politically-motivated allegations of sexual impropriety just to get the most libertarian-leaning member of Congress out.

      It's a real eye-opener, isn't it?

      1. Jefferson Paul   2 months ago

It scares me, frankly. It seems much of the anti-war sentiment and America First messaging was just that, messaging. Now to see purported libertarians turning on Massie, I don't know if this country can be fixed. It's all just party loyalty or loyalty to Trump, even when he does the opposite of what he promised. The groundswell of support for libertarianesque policies were smoke and mirrors. Just like the so-called anti-war left. As soon as Obama was elected, they didn't seem to care about being anti-war. Now anti-war folks on the right cheer on war, after cheering on Trump promising no new wars on the campaign trail. They cheered on Trump, alongside me, when he said he'd drain the swamp and get accountability for those involved with Epstein. Now they despise those like Massie for trying to hold Trump to his promises.

I need a "palate-cleanser," so I'm going to watch the latest Joe Rogan episode that just dropped with the great Scott Horton as the guest. At least Horton has remained consistent.

so tell me - do you want to have another north korea to deal with in the world? another crazy nuclear armed state? As long as they're pursuing nukes in a way we cant track - or dont want to (sort of like the idea there is no election corruption because there are so few cases.... because we havent actively looked into election corruption..because it would prob hurt the D's most....)

America let themselves be spit on and mocked by the Iranians for well nigh 50 years and what do you thing would happen after Obama facilitated their achieving nuclear status - they are a death cult! less rational the the Norks.
You dont have to be a 'Trump cultist' to be pleased that finally an american president had the balls to deal with this kind of thing before it got the the NKorea state of affairs. Being against forever wars doesnt mean you cant have any military actions... and this one, at least to me, seems rational enough. The real problem I have with it is that unless we get the mullahs outta there they are like a rabid dog. You can chain them down but if they get loose you already know what they'll do.

          1. Jefferson Paul   1 month ago

I don't believe Iran was pursuing nuclear weapons. The constant drumbeat for war with Iran has been going on for decades. Obama sucked, but the JCPOA did not. Iran was keeping its end of the deal, allowing IAEA inspections. It wasn't until Trump pulled the US out of the deal that Iran began enrichment above civilian-grade. And that was as a latent deterrent and as a bargaining chip for a new deal. Twice now the US has bombed Iran while in negotiations.

The neocons in the US and Netanyahu and the Likud party has wanted regime change in Iran for decades. I don't trust their word. Our own DNI testified before Congress before the 12 Day War that all of our Intel says Iran is not developing a nuke—that they haven't even made the political decision to do so.

This is a regime change war, and that was the goal from the start. I'm done with being lied into wars.

            1. TJJ2000   1 month ago

Did you also not believe N. Korea was pursuing nuclear weapons under it's 1994 agreement with international inspectors when they H-bombed the Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site?

Maybe you're just entertaining the wrong liars.

The real scandal is that Massie's opponent, Ed Gallrein, actually brags that he MATRICULATED at Murray State Univ. Is this the kind of man you want representing you in Congress?

Well, TDS-addled steaming pile of shit, you should have stayed away.

Hey Robby, you left out the part where the accuser's friend she name checked in the allegation came out and said none of the accusations were true and did not make sense in the timeline. Look into it.

Some more Massie purity for the idol struck here.

    https://capitalisminstitute.org/massie-admits-he-traded-his-vote-for-praise-drawing-fire-from-fellow-republicans/

Rep. Thomas Massie told Politico this week that he once offered House Republican leaders his vote on a key priority in exchange for a public press release thanking him for his work on the Epstein Files Transparency Act. Speaker Mike Johnson refused.

    So principled.

The praise seeking from liberal outlets in pushing McCarthy through. Done in exchange for spots on the rules committee. Another pid pro quo.

    https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2023/05/thomas-massie-saved-the-economy-and-kevin-mccarthy.html

Wont even get into his temper tantrum about Johnson.

  14. Social Justice is neither   2 months ago

So the Massie accusations are unfair but the CBF accusations were totally credible Robby? Fuck you, he's guilty because he was accused -those are the rules you and the MSM demanded so fucking live by then you hypocritical POS.

  15. XM   1 month ago

For the record, I don't think Massie did anything wrong. I don't think he has TDS. He actually votes against Trump on principle, not because he's a part of the "just do the opposite of what Trump wants" opposition. His Epstein theatrics was ill advised, but if he wins reelection - well, good for the state that he represents.

Having said that - is unsubstantiated accusation against politician a galling scheme only when it's leveled at a libertarian? "Filthy" political hit job by "enemies"! Enemies who cling to desperate and unfair allegations to unseat their victim! Vague accusations! Hush money has negative connotation! Partisan actors "seize" on allegations! My, such team play language.

If Massie was a typical republican, reason's headline would be "Regardless of the validity of the accusation, he doesn't deserve to win due to his policies". Roy Moore wasn't that long ago. Remember, court of public opinion isn't due process. Many republicans will vote against Massie in loyalty to Trump, but some will balk at voting for a man involved in a controversy, credible or not.

If you find that unfair, you'll have to stand up against mob action or crooked metoo allegation, independent of politics. A reminder - the NY democrats convicted a president of federal election interference based on a state mislabeling misdemeanor of a NDA that occurred AFTER the election. Found guilty on less than unanimous vote. The judge who disallowed a defense witness for "disrespecting" him.

Political enemies conspiring to unseat their target with dirty tricks? I guess you were late to the party.

  16. Anastasia Beaverhausen   1 month ago

Wow - Massie moves fast! His wife of 35 years died in June 2024, and he was so "devastated" that by September he was already dating! The woman in this article apparently was serious enough of a girlfriend that Massie got her to move and then to help her get a government job (showing how libertarian he really *isn't*, in that he's OK with the woman he's serious about, leeching off the taxpayer), but the relationship ended by January 2025. Then he married his new vastly-younger wife in October 2025, and at the time of his wedding he said he'd been dating and attending the same church as his new wife for "several months", and this time, she was a staffer for Senator Rand Paul! He sure loves those women to suck off the government teat.

Randal and his girl-bullier daddy were the most hellish clown-apes ever to flatline the Libertarian Party's vote growth. Observe that with the Jesus Caucus turning the thing into a religious orgy, I'd wager money that 4 out of 5 of poseurs supporting the Jesus Caucus takeover of the former LP are not women. In 2016 the LP ratio had already dropped to 1 out of 4 being female. What party can a woman vote for to emancipate her from involuntary labor as a breeder dam? With LP out of the running, expect a 6:1 boys' club with no votes by 2028.

  17. LIBtranslator   1 month ago

Republican girl-bulliers cross-dressing as caricature libertarians HAVE to get their fellow Christian National Socialists to boo them for effect. Lookit RFKJ. Here is the "libbetaryun" cardboard cabinet nut traded with the Jesus Caucus for backstabbing Chase Oliver. Pairing Chase with a nazi for veep was the dirking Gary Johnson parried by selecting a smiling neutral party as running mate. Before fifth columnist kiddie pimps gained a footing, Libertarian vote growth was 11% per annum on the original platform.

Could you please translate that comment into English? It was indecipherable with all the insulty gibberish slang.

      1. LIBtranslator   1 month ago

OK. LP plank of 1976: "We further support the repeal of all laws restricting voluntary birth control or voluntary termination of pregnancies during their first hundred days..." = Lots of LP ladies, Vote increase with that plank 4700%
Now, what part of girl-bullier, Christian National Socialist, fifth columnist or kiddie pimp (search "The Child Molesters Party") doesn't your anonymous sock understand?

        1. Anastasia Beaverhausen   1 month ago

OK. You win. I lose. I still have no clue what you're trying to get at. I guess English might be a second language for you. You win Mute.

  18. car-keynes   1 month ago

Although you may see him favorably even with valid reason, Massie was attributed to be interfering, there, directly in the path of justice.

West had sued and then Massie wants to interfere, even after receiving his $10-$15K of "Welcome to Washington" settler money back. Maybe it was her thank-you and evidence of his (Massie's) incestment's maturation. Or maybe it was a like a banana split and not meant to bind them any further with their earlier peel.

You gotta wonder, why prevent this lawsuit? Isn't there supposed to be a separation of powers? In short, lawmaker Massie ought well had recused himself from paying her off.
