Did the Media Miss the Eric Swalwell Story?

Seems weird no one reported on the numerous sexual misconduct allegations in 2020.

Eric Swalwell (JOSÉ LUIS VILLEGAS/TNS/Newscom)

Last week, former Rep. Eric Swalwell (D–Calif.) was a high-profile member of Congress (the sort of anti-Trump #Resistance figure who appeared regularly on MSNOW) and the leading Democratic candidate to be the next governor of California. Today, he's a disgraced ex-candidate and ex-congressman.

You are reading Free Media from Robby Soave and Reason. Get more of Robby's on-the-media, disinformation, and free speech coverage.

Swalwell has quit both jobs following numerous sexual misconduct claims reported on by the San Francisco Chronicle and also CNN. Five women have alleged varying levels of improper behavior: The most serious accusation, made by Lonna Drewes, involves rape. She says that Swalwell lured her to his hotel room and choked her while sexually assaulting her. For his part, Swalwell has tacitly confessed to infidelity but denies that he forced himself on anyone.

"These accusations of sexual assault are flat false," he said. "I will fight them with everything I have."

Given all this, Swalwell's resignation seems appropriate, though I would remind everyone that it is difficult to parse the truth of sexual misconduct accusations that surface years after the fact. Alleged victims deserve to be heard and respected, not automatically believed. Numerous men in politics have been accused of long-ago misdeeds that are impossible to properly vet and therefore mostly ignored—including former President Joe Biden, whose campaign was hardly derailed by an accusation from ex-staffer Tara Reade 30 years after the fact.

Moreover, Swalwell's exit from Congress was prompted by the fact that his colleagues had planned to expel him over the allegations. While it's hardly a tragedy when politicians lose their jobs (I'm all in favor of throw the bums out!), I am very reluctant to endorse the idea that a congressman should be tossed over unproven accusations contrary to basic norms of fairness and due process. Swalwell's constituents chose him to be their guy, and I generally think that it's the voters' responsibility to decide who represents them in Congress, not other legislators.

I say that as someone who finds Swalwell a fairly ridiculous and gullible political figure and a terrible choice for governor of California. The good news for Democrats is that they have numerous other choices: far-left billionaire Tom Steyer, former Rep. Katie Porter (who is herself accused of some nasty behavior), the comparatively moderate San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, and others. The bad news for Democrats is that currently the two highest polling candidates are both Republicans, which could actually result in the Democrats getting shut out of the general election. Additional consolidation is clearly necessary.

Which brings me to my next question, and one I've seen various conservatives asking on social media this week: Why now? At first blush, it does seem rather strange that the accusations against Swalwell would take so long to come out. CNN's Brian Stelter described the Swalwell story as a "testament to the power of investigative reporting," and there's some truth to that. The Chronicle and CNN reporters did a great job, but still. Swalwell has been a major national Democratic figure for years. He even ran for president in 2020!

— Brian Stelter (@brianstelter) April 13, 2026

Additionally, he's been a constant fixture on progressive and mainstream media programs. Per usual, now that the story is out there, one encounters all sorts of Democratic staffers, politicos, and media figures whispering that they had heard the gossip about him for years. It takes a lot of work for a media reporter to hit publish on a story that contains such weighty accusations, but I find it strange that no one tried back in 2020, particularly with #MeToo still being a major topic of interest for the media at the time.

That said, conservatives inclined to complain about this might consider whether their own media institutions also missed the story. After all, there was nothing stopping them from digging into it, but that means investing in real reporting talent, not just clickbait and hot takes.

This Week on Free Media

I discuss Swalwell's exit with Amber Duke. Also, on Freed Up, Christian Britschgi challenges me to guess: death metal album or military operation? Play along!

Simple answer. No Democrat is going to give Fox News a scalp.

    Something about presidential kneepads.

    1. Stupid Government Tricks   2 months ago

Doesn't answer the question. If his nastiness was common knowledge among staffers, some right-wing outlet would have picked up on them. Democrats haven't perfected the art of silencing lips of drunken staffers.

      1. Rick James   2 months ago

If his nastiness was common knowledge among staffers, some right-wing outlet would have picked up on them.

Not necessarily. I'm not going to paint the "right wing outlets" as being more morally grounded, but what I will say is that when it comes to stuff like years-old vague accusations of "We were drunk, therefore I didn't consent" type of things, there's a pretty solid memory of ridiculous, unfounded witch-hunt type of stuff they've all seen before and even though their instinct is to 'kill', they sometimes won't plunge the knife in.

Joe Biden is an example. Back when my feed was more diverse and I would occasionally watch both left-leaning AND right... "maga-coded" right wing media, even the 'maga-coded' media was skeptical of the accusations against Biden from what's her name, because they were super-old, conveniently timed and smacked of all the other old, conveniently timed accusations about some certain supreme court judges which were entirely implausible. Their main focus was not the accusations, but WHY the #MeToo aligned media was largely uninterested in them.

Dont tell STG, but this is the exact same argument being used by dem led corporate media to try to blame right wing outlets.

The fact is those same outlets exposed the fang fang issue. There were multiple stories in breitbart that hinted at it, but democrats refused to go on record. So blame right wing media? Thats a pretty fun bout of blame pointing.

And just look at how many people threatened to sue over the story release. After trump was found guilty multiple times in court by liberal juries over ridiculous claims, who would risk it?

There is a reason that this news rag and corporate media highlighted the 1.5B Alex Jones suit. The voting machine suits against Tucker and fox. All celebrated. Now its why didn't they report a story democrats wouldn't confirm?? STG doesnt think through his own arguments.

They have done the same woth Gallego, where evidence they could publish does exist.

Maybe STG is asking for right wing media to go to tried and true "people familiar with the subject" or "anonymous sources" say like in the attacks they make on conservatives?

          1. Stuck in California   2 months ago

            > So blame right wing media? Thats a pretty fun bout of blame pointing.

Dude, I see the Sorosbots on MSN blame Republicans for budgetary issues in California. Still. After three terms of Dem supermajority.

Talking points have nothing to do with reality, and don't need to. The base is stupid enough to believe them, because they want to, and the other bots will amplify the message so it seems plausible. Opposition will be drowned out, or the issue causes bot fights that pollute comments sections and social media. Both outcomes are acceptable to the propagandists.

      2. Rick James   2 months ago

Democrats haven't perfected the art of silencing lips of drunken staffers.

We'll see what happens when Pelosi is completely gone. For such an intellectually daft woman, she is reportedly (from left-of-center sources) an extremely Machiavellian operator. The Democratic party is very machine-oriented... it's in their DNA. When Pelosi give her nod and thumbs down, that's when you go down. That's why Jill Biden can't stand Pelosi. Biden was "the best Biden ever", he was "fit, rested and ready" and "had a stutter" right up until Pelosi stood up from her Emperor's box, looked upon the arena and turned her thumb downward (in the Hollywood Roman way). She reportedly did the same thing with Swalwell. It was an 'everyone kind of knew' situation but stayed quiet until Pelosi gave the go-ahead that he was done.

Right wing outlets have been reporting on it for years. No sub human (d) cared until he went against the (d) machine

      4. Agammamon   2 months ago

Which are the right wing outlets though. Fox News is no more right wing than Stephen Colbert's old act. Everyone else is a single commentator spouting bullshit.

Because the likes of Stephen Crowder didn't discover it we are supposed to give the Washington Post a pass?

      5. Agammamon   2 months ago

This is why Soave - and the rest of the Left - bring up 'conservative outlets'. It's their attempt to run defense and you are helping them.

  3. MollyGodiva   2 months ago

The media did not miss a story, there was no story. Politicians being sexual predators is normal and accepted in the US, especially by Republicans.

It is like the time nominations were falling like flies because people did not pay taxes on their nannies. Nowadays no one cares.

      1. Ersatz   2 months ago

He's so transparently hypocritical. I would say 'no self awareness' but I'm pretty sure its totally understood - just a being made of hatred for others (to distract from self-loathing) and gas(light). Its a partisan gasbag gaslighting from the core of its being.

but I find it strange that no one tried back in 2020, particularly with #MeToo still being a major topic of interest for the media at the time.

Robby, is this you honestly finding it strange-- or you quietly, inside, deep down, absolutely know why no one tried while typing the words "you find it strange" in some sort of "I'm a neutral reporter here, just the facts, ma'am" kind of strange.

    1. Social Justice is neither   2 months ago

If Robby is being honest there then the only thing he can report on are the polyps on his intestines because his head is that far up his own ass. This is him knowing damn well they all ignored it because it wasn't the team Donkey play to put him.

    2. Patrick Henry, the 2nd   2 months ago

Either he's trying to hard to be neutral, or he like many leftitarians here simple don't understand politics.

      ^this^

    2. Patrick Henry, the 2nd   2 months ago

      Exactly, just like Reason here.

  10. Marc St. Stephen   2 months ago

I know why Reason missed it - those 4-5 daily obligatory "I hate Trump/Isn't Trump absurd" stories are too important to spend much time on other politician malfeasance or Democrat absurdity.

    1. SCOTUS gave JeffSarc a big sad   2 months ago

Reason is under the thumb of the DNC via Koch. This is where they get their marching orders. They are only allowed to criticize Marxist Democrat policies within acceptable limits.

  11. Marshal   2 months ago

That said, conservatives inclined to complain about this might consider whether their own media institutions also missed the story. After all, there was nothing stopping them from digging into it, but that means investing in real reporting talent, not just clickbait and hot takes.

This is pretty funny given that it describes Reason as well as any media. There's also an obvious answer that Robby ignores since it complicates his condescension: no reporting by Fox or right of Fox would have mattered a bit. The only reason this happened at all is because Dems needed it to happen to protect them electorally.

But to the question: if you spend he day at a gun range but never fire a shot can you accurately be described as having missed? Dem media, including CNN, chose not to pursue the story because their only interest is advancing Dem interests. It's idiotic to see the story broke exactly when it advanced those interests and never before, yet claim to believe that timing is a coincidence.

    1. Patrick Henry, the 2nd   2 months ago

Came here to say something similar.

  12. Mickey Rat   2 months ago

"Why now? At first blush, it does seem rather strange that the accusations against Swalwell would take so long to come out."

Apparently these accusations against Swalwell were well known to other Democrats for years. So the question of "why now?", when Swalwell was helping put the Party into position to lose the California governorship by excessive vote splitting in their absurd open primary system is extremely relevant. I expect the media missed this story for the same reason they "missed" the Biden laptop story. They wanted to protect a Dem who was more useful than not.

  13. Spiritus Mundi   2 months ago

Not as important as how many scoops of ice cream Trump was getting. Reeeeason brings you the stories that matter.

  14. Truthteller1   2 months ago

    Is Robby really that stupid?

  15. Agammamon   2 months ago

    >takes a lot of work for a media reporter to hit publish on a story that contains such weighty accusations, but I find it strange that no one tried back in 2020, particularly with #MeToo still being a major topic of interest for the media at the time

Does it? Because you and everyone else jumped right on the 'credible' Kavanagh accusations. And there are the accusations against Clarence Thomas. And everything with Trump for a decade now.

    1. Agammamon   2 months ago

Media doesn't seem to have an issue hitting publish on stories that help the DNC, no matter how flimsy they are.

      1. Ersatz   2 months ago

THIS^^^ but then, we all already and forever have had this realization.... especially the gas lighters in this comments section

  16. Agammamon   2 months ago

    >That said, conservatives inclined to complain about this might consider whether their own media institutions also missed the story

Which institutions would that be? Fox? Who is controlled opposition, not conservative.

Or are we going to pretend Owens, Carlson, and Fuentes are hardcore MAGA investigative reporting outfits rather than weird conspiracy grifting outfits?

    1. Ersatz   2 months ago

never liked 'tucker' with his phony concentrating frown to his fake force laugh ... he made some good points and had some excellent takes when with fox but his delivery and style just shouted 'I'm a phony!' to me. Learning about Fuentes I find him a flea that the legacy media magnifies (and gives oxygen to) to hurt conservatives. Candace was my biggest disappointment having jumped the intellectual shark after childbirth ... i think it can be correlated to that... could be wrong. still, a disappointment.

  17. minus the clever name   2 months ago

So the article boils down to : The disgaced guy would have been great but he got caught and the top dogs now are Republicans and we can't have that. How about this , a cause and effect analysis: that constant "Anything but a Republican lures the Swalwell types to run because they can depend on Libertarians and like-minded to play sniper against the Republican candidates. I would vote Republican in CA now just to shake that club up
