This (Green)land is your land: President Donald Trump, a man who loves his conquests, has set his sights on acquiring Greenland by striking a deal with Denmark. On Saturday, he threatened a new round of tariffs slapped on the European nations he perceives to be standing in his way—Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Britain, the Netherlands, and Finland—to the tune of 10 percent, starting February 1. (Denmark is, of course, the main one he's mad at, but the others have all expressed their support of Denmark and thus earned his ire.)

If a deal isn't struck soon, these tariffs will increase to 25 percent by June 1.

On Truth Social, "Trump argued that the United States needed to control Greenland as a bulwark against Chinese and Russian ambitions in the Arctic, although the United States already has the right to expand its military presence in Greenland under a 1951 agreement with Denmark," per The New York Times.

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

"I had a very good telephone call with Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO, concerning Greenland," writes Trump. "I agreed to a meeting of the various parties in Davos, Switzerland. As I expressed to everyone, very plainly, Greenland is imperative for National and World Security. There can be no going back — On that, everyone agrees!"

"Trump is more demolition man than architect" of American foreign policy, writes The Atlantic's Charles Kupchan. This is perhaps true: Trump routinely struggles with implementation, with what comes after all the bluster and dealmaking. But "the Greenland episode, disgraceful and shameful as it is, should be seen in the context of Trump's other foreign-policy escapades—the capturing of Nicolás Maduro; the bombing of the Iranian nuclear program; the attempt to rebuild and reorient war-shattered Gaza; the on-again, off-again relationships with Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky; the tariff bazookas that get downgraded to squirt guns with China. Erratic as the president sounds, the Trumpian worldview is comprehensible and even, in some respects, predictable," writes Eliot Cohen for The Atlantic. Trump "has three principal instruments in foreign policy: tariffs and kindred economic sanctions, brief bombing campaigns, and commando raids. He has no tolerance for bloody battles, which is why he will not authorize an Arctic amphibious campaign that faces real opposition."

This aversion to using boots on the ground is a good thing. But coercion through tariffs is still coercion. "We are going to do something on Greenland whether they like it or not," Trump told reporters earlier this month.

Scenes from New York: "A federal judge ruled on Friday that a real estate investment firm could complete a $451 million purchase of thousands of apartments from a landlord that has filed for bankruptcy, an early setback for Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who had vowed on his first day in office to protect the tenants," reports The New York Times. Full story here.

QUICK HITS

  • What the hell?

The Miami Beach mayor's office is now flagging citizen's Facebook posts and sending police to their doors to intimidate them for criticism of the mayor.

This video is absolutely outrageous. pic.twitter.com/L8mEr6hPe2

— Mel (@Villgecrazylady) January 19, 2026

  • I feel pretty confident that mandatory national service would result in the stupidest possible assignments: Zoomers being forced to serve as ICE agents (under Republican administrations) or as sex-change-advocating social workers (under Democratic administrations). Also, young people should be allowed autonomy, too, and not just be seen as little pawns under the state's control:

We have never needed a year of mandatory national service than we do right now. If the libs regain power, it's the first thing they should do. Everyone has to spend a year in some national service between when you're 18 and 23. These kids can't even read right now man.

  • President Trump issued a new round of pardons on Friday.
  • "Echoing concerns of Pope Leo XIV over a new era of unilateralism and warfare, the three highest-ranking U.S. Catholic archbishops on Monday said 'the moral foundation for America's actions in the world' has been thrown into question by a resurgence in the use or threat of military force, including in Venezuela and Greenland," reports The Washington Post. "A diplomacy that promotes dialogue and seeks consensus among all parties is being replaced by a diplomacy based on force, by either individuals or groups of allies. War is back in vogue and a zeal for war is spreading," said Pope Leo earlier this month.
  • Scandinavians "have noticed an approach heavier on optimization and performance" from Americans who have recently adopted the use of saunas, reports The New York Times. "Some have detected more of a Burning Man mentality—group breathing exercises and the like. In Mr. Kilpi's estimation, Americans often rush too quickly through the sauna experience, sometimes squeezing it in for a few minutes before or after a workout, not long enough to truly relax. Rarely does the environment resemble the leisurely experience he grew up with." I'm with the Scandinavians here: Saunas should be chatty, full of nudity, and accompanied by a lovely meal after. I don't want any of that Wim Hof breathing crap anywhere near me!
  • I can't even hate, I kinda love this whole vibe:

They gave him a steak with candles like he's a dog about to die. https://t.co/OvfJ391sJb

Their first reason for it being bad is it hurts democrats and helps trump.

President Trump is cannily exploiting this matter to push his anti-immigrant agenda, given that many of the convicted offenders are Somali Americans. Trump has also turned Minnesota’s failure, under Governor Tim Walz, to adequately supervise its social-benefit programs into a broader indictment of financial mismanagement in Democrat-led states.

Then blames the private sector despite the lack of oversight and number of gov employees involved.

Problems of fraud and abuse are more likely in the United States than in other Western countries because the U.S. has chosen to outsource to private businesses and nonprofits social services such as health care, child care, food banks, and help for the disabled. This move, driven by a faith in the private sector to offer better services at lower costs, isn’t inherently problematic, but it creates incentives for people to game the system.

Not a surprise that 'libertarians' can no longer even comprehend nightwatchman (similar to militia - based on direct contributions of labor) - only a police or standing army (based on direct contributions of taxes).

In the former, the people who contribute their labor are the ones who make the decisions and who also implement them. In the latter, the people who make the decisions are the ones who pay - and everyone else who implements is a serf/slave/employee.

I wonder if a mandatory national service could be linked up with defunding/diminishing/abolishing the police. At a certain age all citizens undergo a year's training in crime prevention, detection, peace keeping and de-escalating violence. On graduation they are able to join a peoples' armed militia which performs many of the duties expected of the police force today.

Terrified Dutch students made to live side-by-side with 125 refugees to aid their 'integration' were subjected to years of sexual assault and violence, an investigation has reported.

Stek Oost, located in the Watergraafsmeer district of Amsterdam, was sold to the Netherlands as the dream solution to the housing and refugee crisis.

A total of 125 students and 125 refugees would live alongside each other, and were even encouraged to 'buddy up' so the migrants would adapt to life in the Netherlands more quickly.

But students living there told Dutch investigative documentary programme Zembla they faced multiple sexual assaults, harassment, violence, stalking and even claimed a gang rape had taken place.

Interesting idea, instead of retrocession, making DC square again. Not 100% sure about it, but worthy of discussion.

    https://x.com/chairmanwon/status/2013364858591285664?s=46&t=qeA47-JjK6vq0pfnxg60dA

Making DC Square Again is a serious proposal. Trump should issue the Executive Order proposed here immediately.

This move would shift VA back to a true battleground state by moving ~400,000 primarily Democrat citizens into DC, destroy the 8th congressional district, and force a redistricting crisis in VA that would benefit Republicans.

The way this is done is by undoing the unconstitutional retrocession of DC territory to Virginia in 1846. RetroRetrocession as I call it. There are two key arguments that support this move.

A - Just as a state cannot unilaterally secede, Congress cannot unilaterally dismantle the constitutional seat of government once it has been accepted per the Constitution.

B - Even if we accept the constitutionality of retrocession, the conditions were never met for the 1846 retrocession act to come into force.

That act required the "assent of the people of the county AND town of Alexandria". The town voted for retrocession but the county voted against. Because the condition precedent of true, unified assent was never met, the Act of 1846 never legally entered into force.

Death by suicide was the leading cause of death for both the LGB+ population and their heterosexual counterparts in the younger age groups, the study found, but the proportions were markedly higher in those identifying as LGB+: 45.3% of those aged 16 to 24 years identifying as LGB+, compared with 26.6% identifying as straight or heterosexual; 29.6% of those aged 25 to 34 years identifying as LGB+, compared with 18.4% identifying as straight or heterosexual; and 14.3% of those aged 35 to 44 years identifying as LGB+, compared with 9.8% identifying as straight or heterosexual.

Federal authorities say the Boston ring allegedly used comically small convenience stores—we’re talking glorified closets—to launder an incredible $500,000 in SNAP benefits every single month. That’s more than six times what a typical large supermarket processes.

That wasn’t some petty scam; it was part of a massive fraud ring run by Haitian nationals in Boston. At the same time, another scheme operated by Yemeni nationals in New York was busy pulling off a similar heist. Combined, these criminal enterprises are charged with stealing a staggering $27 million in taxpayer-funded food stamps. And that’s just what we know about so far.

As the USDA tries to implement basic, common-sense data-sharing rules to stop this kind of abuse, they are being stonewalled by the very people who claim to care about the poor.

An unbelievable 21 Democratic-led states have filed lawsuits to block this crucial oversight.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison on Wednesday charged a Minneapolis man with more than $3 million in Medicaid fraud tied to a state-licensed home health agency.

Mohamed Abdirashid Omarxeyd was charged with eight counts of felony theft by false representation after prosecutors said he used his company, Guardian Home Health Services, to bill Minnesota’s Medicaid program for services that were never provided or were ineligible for reimbursement from 2020 through 2024.

The libertarian concept of "voting with your feet" is very sound. The idea of a person leaving a third world theocracy and moving to a western-style developed democratic republic should never be allowed to lead to bringing the third world theocracy to the democratic republic. Why would anyone want to bring the terror they are fleeing with them? How to prevent that is the question here! I suggest that only by maintaining the authority of the original intent of the Constitution can that succeed without violating a new immigrant's individual rights and liberty in general.

    Was JewFree asking the questions?

    https://www.ntd.com/shapiro-says-he-was-asked-if-he-was-an-israeli-government-agent_1120403.html

In Mr. Shapiro’s book, “Where We Keep the Light,” the governor is measured in describing his interactions with Ms. Harris herself. But Mr. Shapiro, who is Jewish, details a contentious vetting process in which Ms. Harris’s team focused intensely on his views on Israel — so much so that at one point, he wrote, he was asked if he had ever been an agent of the Israeli government.

“Had I been a double agent for Israel?” wrote Mr. Shapiro, describing his incredulous response to a last-minute question from the vetting team. He responded that the question was offensive, he wrote, and was told, “Well, we have to ask.”

“Have you ever communicated with an undercover agent of Israel?” the questioner, Dana Remus, a former White House counsel, continued, according to Mr. Shapiro, who recounted, “If they were undercover, I responded, how the hell would I know?”

Mr. Shapiro wrote that he understood that Ms. Remus was “just doing her job.” But the fact that he was asked such questions, he wrote, “said a lot about some of the people around the VP.”

Instead of walking into the location at the corner of 3rd Avenue and Pine Street in downtown Seattle to order food and drinks, patrons now have to go to a hatch, mostly covered in plexiglass, per the Daily Mail.

The double doors leading to McDonald's are reportedly propped open at all times, and the glass outside the hatch is covered with plywood to protect it from vandalism.

A 45-year-old man named Nick spoke to the Daily Mail about the location in question — which Seattle locals have nicknamed "McStabby's," per the outlet — claiming that people tend to "do drugs and attack each other" outside the fast food spot.

A manhunt continued on Tuesday for a gunman who shot and wounded two Portland, Oregon, police officers after they responded to a call of an armed man making threats in a residential neighborhood, authorities said.

Based on the Good standard established by Reeeeason Jacob Sullum, here is what happened.
    1. This guy was just out practicing his 1st and 2nd amendment rights.
    2. His mind set about ICE and law enforcement is irrelevant.
    3. We can't be sure he was actually trying to shoot the officers. Maybe they just walked in front of his gun.
    4. The police need more training to de-escalate the situtation.

Do people give steaks with candles to dying dogs?

I did not know that... Why?

    Now they're eating their own...

"You don’t just tell extremists that random customers are ICE agents,” he said. “That’s how people get hurt.”

He said although the engineer pals represent a spectrum of political views, after coming face to face with the deranged throng of anti-ICE protesters calling for blood, “I think some of them are rethinking everything.”

    https://nypost.com/2026/01/19/us-news/anti-ice-protesters-mistake-minneapolis-techies-for-feds/

Half-wit anti-ICE protesters accosted a group of software engineers enjoying lunch in Minneapolis — after a mass text erroneously identified them as federal agents, video shows.

The men were eating at Clancey’s Deli when one of them, who is part of an anti-ICE Signal chat, got a message from “SW Minneapolis Rapid Response” alerting members to the presence of plainclothes agents at the restaurant, according to a report by Alpha News.

“My friend was shocked. He’s on the [anti-ICE] side politically. He lives nearby. He’s eaten there before. And suddenly he’s seeing messages saying we’re ICE,” Lee, one of the engineers, told the outlet.

Once the alert was shared, dozens of protesters flocked to the restaurant, some of whom can be seen peering through the restaurant’s front window in a video filmed by one of the men, who can be heard saying he felt “like a zoo animal” as they were gawked at from the sidewalk.

As the men emerged from the deli, the braying herd closed in, loudly blowing whistles and shouting insults at them.

“You’re a f–king bootlicker bitch!” one of the protesters can be heard over the shrill tone of their whistles.

“Get out of our f–king neighborhood!” screamed another.

One of the engineers, clearly taken aback by the case of mistaken identity, stammered out an explanation of who they were.

“We do custom apps for a whole bunch of companies around Minnesota and the country!” he exclaimed, which an incredulous protester followed up with “then why are you filming us?”

“Because you’re filming us!” he shot back.

Lee told the outlet some in the crowd called them “pedophiles,” and that the “main ringleader” of the protesters said they deserved the harassment because they were “white privileged males.”

He said one of the men thought they were going to “get shot.”

Typical stupid white people. They always think being a loyal member of the party will save them. It never does.

Isn't "menacing" a crime in every state in the country? Or have we simply defined that out of existence?

If SSReye lunatics screaming "NAZI!" at you over and over isn't "threatening," I don't know what else would count.

'the moral foundation for America's actions in the world'

Not even close! The moral foundation for America's actions in the world has ALWAYS been in question, not just recently thrown into question by the current President. There is one - and ONLY one - moral foundation for America's actions in the world: self defense. NOT "protecting our vital national interests." NOT "making the world safe for democracy." NOT "containing the spread of communism." NOT "the global war against terrorism" or the "global war on drugs." NOT stopping "genocidal" brushfire wars. We should have pulled out of NATO long ago, but NOW is not too late!
