'We Cannot Be Afraid To Do Something Because the Left Might Do It in the Future'
Vice President J.D. Vance on the nature of power
"We cannot be afraid to do something because the left might do it in the future." —J.D. Vance
Asked by a college student if Republicans ought to be more cautious about "abusing that power" when they control the federal government, Vice President J.D. Vance left no doubt that he's unworried.
"The left is already going to do it, regardless of whether we do it," he added.
You'll have a hard time finding a more concise formulation of the will-to-power sentiment that has seized so much of the conservative movement in recent years. And this was no gaffe—Vance has said similar things on several occasions, and he posted a video of this comment to his official X account.
The full context of the moment is worth appreciating. At a Turning Point USA event in October 2025 at the University of Mississippi, Vance took a question from a student who expressed concern about an unfriendly administration potentially targeting conservatives who might protest against it. "How can we prevent someone from abusing that power?" the student asked.
Vance's chilling response waves away those worries. Rather than asking conservatives to reflect on the proper limits of political power or the potential consequences of overreaching, the vice president is effectively granting permission for greater intrusions against Americans' rights and liberties.

Shit used to be, "The Demon-Craps did shit first and did shit worst, so shit is cummendable if we do shit, too!"
NOW shit is, "The Demon-Craps MIGHT do shit in the future, so, in odor for us to be cummendable, WE must do shit first!"
(Do POWER AND PUNISHMENT unto others before they do POWER AND PUNISHMENT unto you!)
Truth is FAR stranger than fiction!
Unread
DLAM has becum undone! Cuntaminated and DeLaminated!!! (Someone should set up a Go-Fund-Me web page to fund the RE-lamination of the DeLaminated DLAM!!!)
English motherfucker, do you speak it?
English, FartHam Guilty-Fowl, doth PervFected You read shit?
I'll take that as a no.
Sounds like we need to hire an exterminator to get rid of a rabid SQRL.
“We should be too big to take offense and too noble to give it.” - Abraham Lincoln
And you are neither.
Commies like you and Boehm need their victims to not fight back. GDIAF you evil POS.
Said the guy who sacrificed half a million American lives and several million slaves' lives in the aftermath because he was offended.
You know the first conspicuous or violent deaths of The Civil War were because a private hotel owner, who didn't own slaves, was flying a flag that Pres. Lincoln didn't like, right?
“ Said the guy who sacrificed half a million American lives and several million slaves' lives in the aftermath because he was offended.”
The Confederacy got all those people killed. Trying to destroy America wasn’t Lincoln’s doing, it was the South’s.
You misspelled "Democrats". They caused the war,
The democrats. The same democrats now starting a new civil war.
Democrats like you.
Says the man who suspended the Bill of Rights and threw reporters in jail because they criticized him.
Not one mention that Democrats have already abused such power in a more egregious manner? The other side HAS, IS, and WILL abuse any shred of power they can justify to their own side. You can't pretend the precedent hasn't already been set. You also can't pretend to give a fuck about abuse of power when much of what you're crying about is a reversal of his predecessor's abuse.
Fuck off you disingenuous cunt.
Eric subscribes to one ratchet theory. Democrats can abuse systems to capture and corrupt them. Any act to return to prior normal is what he gets mad at.
He is mad at deregulation. He is mad at enforcing the INA. He is mad at stopping spending.
You're using an 20th Century conception of ratchet theory.
Modern ratchet theory: You set the ratchet to tighten the bolts and proceed. If anyone even tries to switch the direction of the ratchet for any reason at all, you beat them with the wrench and accuse them of being a violent, racist Nazi for trying to undo all your hard work to make people free.
To paraphrase Sarc, "It's okay when Democrats do it."
Speaking of, is it just me or has he no been around recently?
“ Not one mention that Democrats have already abused such power in a more egregious manner?”
No, that isn’t partisan hyperbole at all.
“ The other side HAS, IS, and WILL abuse any shred of power they can justify to their own side.”
That, either.
“ You can't pretend the precedent hasn't already been set.”
People doing evil things isn’t a precedent. It’s something to be resisted, not emulated. At least it is by people with principles, so not anyone in this administration.
“ You also can't pretend to give a fuck about abuse of power when much of what you're crying about is a reversal of his predecessor's abuse”
They aren’t reversing anything. They are abusing power in ways and realms that no one has considered before. The disregard of this administration for American values, constitutional rights, and the law is horrifying.
I agree with you that the democrats have abused power in unprecedented ways. Which is why there should be no more democrat party, and also why all Marxist should be incarcerated or in the ground.
Our cities are militarized. Our empire is on the hunt to steal more territory and resources. Government spending has increased. The economy has become more managed. The constitution has been flagrantly disregarded. Law enforcement has been politicized. Corruption has been normalized. Libertarianism has been defenestrated from the GOP.
And the ratchet clicks ad libitum.
Libertarianism decided that the GOP was their foe instead of their potential ally.
The Libertarians, as usual, made the dumbest move humanly possible.
That’s because the GOP started betraying libertarian principles and embracing authoritarianism.
The GOP made libertarians their opponents through their actions.
Exactly
Ok, comrade.
No cunt, your fellow travelers threw the border open for four years and let 29 million illegals swarm into the country. Trump is elected specifically to stop that and get rid of all the illegals. You and your fellow travelers in antifa decide to commit insurrection, while your democrats masters in blue states refuse to enforce the law.
You are the authoritarians, you are the criminals, and you are the insurrectionist traitors.
Every one of you should be deposited in landfills, face down.
We are now at the point where the only way the US can change is to suffer a massively embarrassing humiliation. Bring it on.
You go comrade!
"How can we prevent someone from abusing that power?"
Gosh, let's see ... what if we, I don't know ... look back at some history for starters? Several of my ancestors resisted abuse of power in the streets of Boston from about 1760 to about 1782. Quite a number of Bostonians were killed over the decades of the American Revolution to "prevent someone from abusing" power. If "Turning Point" represents the attempt to turn abuse of power by Democrats into abuse of power by Republicans, count me out. Americans lost the ability to prevent the abuse of power by government officials long ago when they started refusing to defend the Constitution against all enemies. Those of us who swore that oath and know in very real, practical terms what that means and what it requires are rightfully scornful of college students asking J.D. Vance questions.
There is nothing "conservative" about them. They are fascist shits.
You probably consider your boss. Xi to be a conservative, right faggot?
The Four-Way Test, created by Herbert J. Taylor, helps Rotarians evaluate their conduct.
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
grand canyon size difference between "do something" and "abuse power" words matter
We cannot be afraid to do something because the left might do something in future
So is this the explanation for him wearing eye makeup?
How about a little context on what the question asked actually was? What power are we talking about abusing here?
What a bozo. I read his memoir a few years ago and was persuaded of the exact opposite of what he was selling. His family and neighbors came across as a bunch of pill-eating sit-arounds. Apropos of nothing, an old pal moved back after getting a big money job in Clevland. "Life is too short to live in Ohio," he said.
Here's the clip for actual context. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/vIwEzosL5uo
Vance's statements are reasonable enough, accurate, and virtuous. He's obviously thinking about things that are good in his mind.
A number of things can be true from different angles, albeit with some tension.
1. Don't do something bad, just because the other side will do something bad.
2. Don't avoid doing something good, just because you fear the other side will do something bad in response.
3. Be careful about expanding the power yielded by a certain government office or body, because down the road someone is liable to use it for bad. (Actually expanding, that is, not just what some nitwit says is expanding, but really was already there.)
4. Recognize that at the end of the day, any modicum of power that exists is liable to be used for bad, and you ultimately have to rely on a general societal morality to produce and retain morally virtuous leaders. There's no way of getting completely around that, since some level of law and order is necessary, unless you're a loony anarchist.
5. Decentralize all the things.
That clip is in no way reassuring.
It's straight up "Whataboutism" comparing investigations of Trump's overt violations with deploying the national guard over the objections of the States. And then he concludes by saying he'd be ok if Biden deployed the national guard for the same purposes that Trump did.
This is complete nonsense as a purported justification or defense.

"If we are on a target and doing an operation, there may be individuals surrounding that criminal that we may be asking who they are and why they’re there, and having them validate their identity,” Noem said.
Vance may be more psychologically interesting than Trump.
Trump is a truly world-class pathology. An animate dark triad with no other qualities. It’s so boring to think of elderly men still being bullied in their brains by smarter and more attractive peers in high school. This is something different. A pure void. Is the stupidity the point? Is he just incapable of reflecting on anything? He’s been slapping his name on everything for decades without any regard to taste. Putting gilt Hobby Lobby decals all over the White House may just be the dementia settling in. He’s addicted to power, an alcoholic personality as has been explained. But that’s boring too. Hitler could manage table manners. Trump is a true monster.
But Vance. What even is he? His personality suggests his free time is spent staring at the corner of a wall in a stupor. He wants us to think he’s made of redneck resentments, but he is of course a fraud and a loser. Lots of us come from rednecks. Who cares? Not having an ethical core is beside the point. No Republican does. They are self-selected as those who would turn a blind eye to rampant child trafficking if it means access to the cigar room at the club.
Unfortunately, in the end, Vance strikes me as all too uninteresting. An insecure teen desperately trying for valedictorian but also a lazy fat fuck who figured out the path of least resistance was fascism.
