Trump Won on Immigration. Now Most Americans Say His Deportations Are Going Too Far.
The public wants violent criminals deported, not workers and their families.
Donald Trump won the U.S. presidency in no small part thanks to his promise to enforce immigration restrictions that the Biden administration largely ignored. Election year polls found more voters preferred Trump over then-president Joe Biden on the issue and even favored his proposals for mass deportations. But the reality of tough border policies is a harsh reality check; since the current administration took office, Americans have cooled on its policies and warmed to immigration.
That's not to say the country is embracing Biden's nudge-and-wink approach to border crossings. Instead, people seem to want a middle ground combining enforcement with a touch of humanity.
You are reading The Rattler from J.D. Tuccille and Reason. Get more of J.D.'s commentary on government overreach and threats to everyday liberty.
Immigration Helped Win the White House for Trump
The former president took office with big plans to roll back Trump's tough first-term immigration policies. That didn't go well for him as border crossings skyrocketed, alarming the public. In February 2024, Bloomberg polling found a rising percentage of voters calling immigration the "single most important issue'" contributing to lagging numbers for Biden across the swing states he eventually lost.
By April, Harris polling recorded majority (51 percent) support for mass deportations. Thirty percent of Democrats and 46 percent of Republicans wanted to end constitutionally protected birthright citizenship.
Two weeks ago, in a very belated election post-mortem, The New York Times conceded that "as public concern over border security grew, partly in response to Mr. Biden's own actions, his administration proved catastrophically slow to change course" and ultimately lost voters to his rival.
But that was then. Public attention is now occupied not by images of crowds surging across the border and crimes committed by undocumented immigrants, but by stories of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids and often rough tactics. While federal officials have arrested some serious criminals—though the vast majority of those taken into custody have no criminal convictions and only about 5 percent have violent convictions—Americans hear far more stories about worksite raids that scoop up peaceful, hard-working laborers.
Rounding up gangbangers is popular. Separating families is not.
This week, The Marshall Project journalism nonprofit reported that "the Trump administration's revival of family detention has swept thousands of children into ICE custody. At least 3,800 children under age 18, including 20 infants, have been booked since Trump took office."
But Harsh Enforcement Alienates the Public
The public isn't seeing what it expected and that's affecting people's opinions.
"As the Trump administration escalates its immigration enforcement efforts, 53% of Americans say it is doing 'too much' when it comes to deporting immigrants who are living in the United States illegally," the Pew Research Center revealed this week. "That share is up from 44% in March."
As you'd expect, there are sizable differences in views between supporters of the two major political parties. Eighty-six percent of Democrats and independents who lean toward that party oppose the Trump administration's immigration policies, compared to 20 percent of Republicans and Republican leaners. But opposition is rising in both groups.
Importantly, "47% of Hispanic Republicans say the administration is doing too much, up from 28% in March." That's a large part of the electorate that drifted in the GOP's direction in the last election and could just as easily move away.
This isn't a sudden shift. By July, Gallup found that support for mass deportations had plunged "with 38% now favoring this as the administration is attempting it, down from 47% last year when it was a Trump campaign promise." The firm also reported that "support for allowing undocumented immigrants to become U.S. citizens has risen to 78%, up from 70% last year."
In the same survey, "a record-high 79% of U.S. adults say immigration is a good thing for the country."
That month, 52 percent of respondents called Trump's approach to immigration policy "too harsh" in The Economist/YouGov polling.
That is, the Trump administration quickly lost the American people with its approach to border enforcement and hasn't gained them back. Voters didn't like Biden immigration policies and opted for something different—as a candidate, the current president was very open about what he planned to do—but they don't like harsh enforcement any better than they cared for near-total lack of enforcement.
So, what do people want when it comes to immigration?
Americans Want a Humane Middle Ground
Obviously, Americans like a welcoming policy towards immigrants—so long as they follow the rules. That can be a problem, given that the legal path to settling in this country is almost impossible to navigate. A 2023 Cato Institute report by David J. Bier noted that "fewer than 1 percent of people who want to move permanently to the United States can do so legally" and that "immigration is now prohibited in a similar way to alcohol during Prohibition."
Unfortunately, most people don't realize that only a very fortunate few can find a legal path to entry.
Americans also agree with the president's occasional promise to deport "the worst of the worst." In the recent Pew poll, 97 percent of U.S. adults favor deporting those who are in the country illegally and have committed violent crimes. Fifty-two percent of respondents support deporting undocumented immigrants who commit nonviolent crimes.
That's a policy with a solid base of support. But, as mentioned above, according to the most recent data crunched by Cato's Bier, only about 5 percent of those detained had a violent criminal conviction. "Nearly three in four (73 percent) had no criminal conviction."
Americans want border enforcement. But they're not overall hostile to immigration—they favor increased legal immigration. They want ICE to target human predators who crossed the border illegally, not workers and their families.
So, there is an opening for a middle ground on border enforcement between Biden's dereliction of duty and Trump's iron fist. Arresting and deporting dangerous criminals while creating a credible legal path to immigration could win favor with the American people.

Reason will never admit the failures of their open border religion. Fraud. Crime. Welfare waste. Government spending. Effects on inflation.
Always for more negative externalities. Never admitting to known issues.
When it is pointed out that Cato and reason aligned with leftist open border Marxists, it isnt a joke.
Even here their goal is to push leftist propaganda, pushing their lies then crow when it has an effect on polling. Such as pushing open border Marxists Briers continued manipulation such as declaring "not convicted." Brier is an open border marxist/liar. His latest narrative is one manipulating data. And when called out on X, he doubles down. He came up with the convicted metric while ignoring charges pending or deportations in lieu of charges. A common execution of the law. Just like when Brier had to retract his Texas immigrant arrest study after he was accused of using faulty data by Texas itself.
The reliance on CATOs known open borders liar multiple times in the last few days shows reason willingly pushes propaganda.
They also have a habit of describing violent criminals as just being a "Maryland dad"
What violent crime is the "Maryland dad" guilty of ?
^Sarcasm or stupidity?
Stupidity from that one
Kidnapping, sex trafficking. And he's,s an admitted member of a violent foreign gang who is afraid of returning home because of retribution for the murder he admitted he committed.
So you're going with stupidity?
Human trafficking, assault, domestic abuse. Those are the known ones.
Admittance to MS13 requires more to join.
She does find those to be violent crimes if committed by somebody with a darker skin tone than their own.
Cannot expect them to act like humans and all. That would be racist.
Immigration is a net positive for the economy. Also immigrants commit fewer crimes than Americans, so immigration would lower the crime rate.
Shut up Mei Ling.
I wonder if Tony has any self awareness of his utter stupidity.
Shut up, 混蛋
This remains false. When jeff tried this bullshit he had to link to a 30 year old brookings models because it has never been true.
Actually, it's based on data produced by Texas in the last several years. They are the only state that actively reports the immigration (including illegal immigrant) status with the arrest records, it seems.

We’re talking about illegals, not immigrants.
Walz +7
We're discussing ILLEGAL immigration. Either 1) you're a useful idiot who is easily brainwashed by Democrats and the corrupt MSM, or 2) you're being deliberately obtuse for political gain. I suspect it's the former based on your past statements.
Ok, Molly Ringwald, time for you to go back to the kiddie table and let the adults have an honest discussion.
This analysis is based on a survey conducted Oct. 6-16, 2025, among 8,046 U.S. adults.
JFC.
0.003% of adult Americans were polled. Likely all from Los Angeles.
They've been making the "criminals, not workers" argument since they lost in 2016. Cato's lie about "Immigrants commit *fewer* crimes than natives" has been bandied about since at least 2015.
I can't tell if whatever copium they're addicted to is 10,000X more powerful than fentanyl or a placebo.
Why do I keep coming to Reason to get the same crap available on NBC and the New York Times?
The illegal aliens must go. Fuck "most Americans".
Face it; you are addicted to our wit and sarcasm in the comments.
Do you actually read articles, or just glance at the headline and author before jumping to the comments, like the rest of us?
About 50-50. Depends on how much free time I have. Unlike, apparently, most of the regulars here, I have a job.
"Why do I keep coming to Reason to get the same crap available on NBC and the New York Times?"
Because NBC and the NYT are telling the truth, or at least two orders of magnitude more truth than Fox.
"...Because NBC and the NYT are telling the truth,..."
^Sarcasm or stupidity?
Remember that time Fox News used a ghost as a source for their news articles? They settled a nearly billion-dollar lawsuit over it.
Waltz+11
LOL! Ok Tiananmen Tony.
Your stupidity at least is worth a chuckle.
Unfortunately, our economy would collapse if we removed all illegal immigrants. Did you already forget what happened to the crops in Georgia when they tried to crack down on illegal immigrants?
What we need is a way for migrant laborers to more quickly get a legal status (not necessarily citizenship) so they can perform the jobs that American citizens will never do.
That was impossible with wide open borders. It didn't matter what our guest worker and immigration policies were as long as the migrants could literally walk around enforcement. Now that the border is much more secure and immigration enforcement is becoming more effective, we can talk about improving our foreign workers and immigration policies.
That was impossible with wide open borders.
It's the out-of-touch retardation of "Who will pick our blueberries?" in a different skin. Millions of dollars in crops are lost from labor, drought, flood, heat, etc., etc., etc. all the time. Georgia isn't a primary producer of US agricultural goods (where crops grown in, e.g., CA routinely ship to GA and vice versa) and the specific "millions in crops" cited as lost weren't even Georgia's primary crops.
They may as well have said, "Remember when GA banned illegal immigrants and there was an ornamental shrubbery shortage for half a season?"
It's performative theater from people can't even grow their own potatoes in cups like 3rd graders and, rather overtly, don't care otherwise.
Fewer people died of the "Georgia crop shortage" than died of either green energy-related blackout in TX or Europe, but we don't get the incessant lectures about how we should avoid green energy (energy diversity!), we get the lectures about how immigrants are necessary for our survival.
This ^
Very well said.
It was estimated to be over $75m in losses and included "onions, watermelons, bell peppers, cucumbers, squash, blueberries and blackberries", hardly just "ornamental bushes", as you claim, and it was directly linked to labor shortages.
It hit smaller farms the hardest, who ended up planting less for the next season since they didn't know if they'd have the labor to harvest it.
https://www.farmprogress.com/management/studies-surveys-confirm-georgia-farm-labor-losses
Not sure what green energy has to do with this and is entirely irrelevant to this discussion. Changing the topic doesn't really help your argument.
It would be a problem if Thanos used the Infinity Gauntlet and snapped them all away instantly. It won’t be a problem to remove them over the next several years.
We can also create legal guest worker VISA programs as needed. But robotics is going to eliminate a good chunk of those jobs in the next decade anyway.
But it’s utter bullshit that we survive as a country on,y because we have millions of illegals here.
"Unfortunately, our economy would collapse if we removed all illegal immigrants."
Unfortunately, you made an imbecilic assertion without any support. We'll assume an imbecile.
Bush suggested that and there were mass protests in the street with people flying the Mexican flag and Democrats calling it racist and horrible.
Did you already forget what happened to the crops in Georgia when they tried to crack down on illegal immigrants?
You mean when a couple million dollars in the blueberries and melons to go in AWFL's smoothies was lost but Georgia's exports of staples like chicken, peanuts, and pecans was largely unphased?
I remember when lots of people died of COVID, how many people died because of the "Georgia crop shortage"? Seems like if it was so catastrophic, we would've been getting daily updates on the deaths and had debates over "of starvation vs. with starvation". Since there were no such debates, I can only assume you're dishonest, retarded, or both.
I don’t know how some people are going to survive the next 3 years.

People will live them "318 days & 14 hours" at a time.
Until you lose again, TDS-addled slimy pile of lying shit.
So would you rather be held in an internment camp or permanently exiled to Somalia?
So "most" Americans think America should be overrun by invaders?
Most Americans think brutality and inhumanity is not the answer.
All Americans know you're a steaming pile of lying TDS-addled lefty shit.
China seems to being bad job at both, why not go down to your friendly party leadership building and yell at them?
How would you know? You’re just some ChiCom controlled retard faggot.
Walz +7
And you keep wishing to be American...
The issue is that when you look closely, almost all of the brutality and inhumanity disappears. The more you look, the more it looks like standard policing.
Additionally, there is the simple question of "what's the alternative"? Because the alternative that has been proposed is effectively to ignore the law indefinitely and exploit their illegal status.
If this is true, it means the American experiment is over since unfettered immigration and a welfare state are not compatible and it will accelerate our decline.
If 'most people' think that's acceptable, the consequences will be theirs. Emotive wishcasting makes for poor policy.
Of course, while Democrats constantly harp on the plight of illegal immigrants they do absolutely nothing legislatively to fix the situation when they hold power. This tells us they don't actually give any fucks about illegal immigrants, but instead view them as a hammer.
There was once a time when libertarians knew this reality.
Then they became utter morons,
I vote Libertarian and I agree that immigration should be "fettered", but we should have easier and faster paths for migrant laborers to come do the jobs that we'll never get citizens to do.
Probably with some sort of temporary resident program that wouldn't qualify for welfare or medicaid, but they should be required to pay for medical insurance for the time they are here as to not further burden our medical system.
Or we can get more AI controlled robots to do manual labor. I'd also be okay with that.
"...but we should have easier and faster paths for migrant laborers to come do the jobs that we'll never get citizens to do..."
How 'bout we not use my money to pay them not to do those jobs? You make claims toward libertarianism, but have no issue with the welfare system?
Pick one; can't be both.
Yeah; Show a little humanity to people who break-into places eh? /s
If you humanitize the crime maybe it'll just disappear on its own!? /s
I'm not so sure anyone but Reason and a few believes this.
But of course immigration law is done by CONGRESS not Trump!
Isn't that what we've been told this whole year?
It is a genius level logic: if we make crime legal then we've solved crime, just ignore the underlying abuses and it's all fine.
They create a crisis and let it fester and then pretend to swoop in and fix it. However they just word salad the same policies and the media spins it.
Biden/Dems border bill saying they fixed it only tried to put the open borders policies into law...
https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/4361
If you don't support the arrest and deportation of people who are sitting in a courtroom, waiting for their immigration hearing, you support the genocide of white people.
If you want to have rapists deported, you're just a bigot.
All illegals should be deported ate first opportunity. Scooping them up in court works well.
Lame attempt at a false equivalency.
Bubba Maddow and the Joy sisters reunion band suggesting people do not want illegal immigration over fear of the browning of America.
Fuck off with your racist bullshit
If you think Bubba Jones has more than one brain cell, you don't
Fuck off and die, asswipe.
Poll: Plurality Want Less or Zero Legal Migration
..Amid the partisan polarization, there is a two-to-one plurality for less migration vs more migration. Just 18 percent of citizens want legalized migration to be increased, while 35 percent want it decreased or zeroed.
Twenty-five percent said the number should not be changed, even though establishment outlets rarely described the actual inflow of legalized migrants each year. Under Joe Biden, the inflow of all migrants was roughly level with the number of births.
Each year, the federal government imports more than 1.2 million legalized permanent or temporary migrants. That is roughly one legalized migrant for every three births.
The 26 percent who favor “decreased” migration is the plurality score in the YouGov poll, partly because an unusually large 19 percent of respondents declined to reveal their preference.....
Other polls show overwhelming support for the deportation of all illegal migrants who commit major crimes, and a solid majority support for the deportation of all illegal migrants...
But opinion polls also seem to show wild swings in public support for and against migration. For example, a new Gallup poll shows apparent support for more migration amid President Donald Trump’s curbs on legal and illegal migration.
But the small print in the Gallup poll says the result excluded comments from people “who volunteer that the effects [of migration] are ‘mixed’ or who do not have an opinion.”
The Gallup skew was ignored by pro-migration advocates. “You’ve already lost,” taunted Taiwanese immigrant Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) in a December 17 social-media message that spotlighted results from the Gallup poll. “America is even more pro immigration under your watch.”
In general, “When looking more deeply at attitudes on immigration, sentiment can vary widely based on the details included in specific poll questions, reflecting the complexity of the issue,” the New York Times reported in November...
Overall, many polls reveal that Americans want to like — and to be seen liking — immigrants and immigration, even as the majority also oppose the damage caused by loose borders.
The economic damage includes lower wages, high housing costs, chaotic diversity, and raucous politics, while the benefits flow overwhelmingly to migrants, employers, and older investors.
https://www.breitbart.com/immigration/2025/12/17/poll-plurality-want-less-or-zero-legal-migration/
"older investors"
Wait... Isn't Trump himself an older investor? And his closest associates and backers?

Trueman is hoping aliens show up to run reactors. Or perhaps apes like him.
Trueman is a fucking imbecile.
Yes. And your point is?
People like Trump generally stand to benefit economically in the near term from mass immigration.
That's why it's great he is selflessly taking all these arrows and undertaking all this effort to do what's right for America and the working man! Or, alternatively, he's a huckster and will end up caving to the open borders lobby or somehow not doing his best to follow through on his immigration promises. Take your pick.
But also, even people like Trump don't stand to benefit in the big picture, if they care about preserving the blessings of liberty to America's posterity and all that.
TDS-addled steaming pile of lying shit Tuccille:
'Well, some people should obey the law but not if Trump is enforcing it!'
They are illegal aliens, shitforbrains, here illegally. Fuck off and die, asswipe.
"most"
I don't think that word means what you think it means.
Personal challenge for J.D. -
Go two weeks prefixing the word "immigrant" with either "legal" or "illegal".
"The public wants violent criminals deported, not workers and their families."
No.
The public want all criminals deported.
If you cross the border illegally, you are a criminal.
Q.E.D.
1. Crossing the boarder without documentation is a civil offense.
2. One is not a criminal until they are convicted.
1) Which is why months of due process is not needed. Civil offenses have far less due process than criminal offenses.
2) They tend to be released by progressives a lot.
Might be best for ICE to just start killing people.
1. Yes!
2. ICE should start with the feral democrats who obstruct them.
Crossing the border can also be a misdemeanor offense ( first time) and illegal re-entry after deportation can be a felony. In the past it has been treated as a civil offense simply be ause it was quicker and easier but if you really want due process it might be time to start charging people with the criminal offenses and locking them up before deporting them.
A civil offense woth the remedy being deportation retard. And staying 60 days past final deportation orders is a felony retard.
Inaccurate, they become a convict once convicted.
Wrong , idiot Molly or whatever your other names on here are.
Crossing illegal is a CRIME. Specifically a misdemeanor for a first offense and a FELONY for subsequent offenses.
And either way the remedy is DEPORTATION, you shameless lying f*ck.
2. One is not a criminal until they are convicted.
So, if you're a serial killer, but you never get caught, you're not a criminal?
Trump is going after legal immigrants and Americans who look like immigrants. We all knew he would during the campaign. Those who voted for this are morally guilty.
Trump is hurting innocent people and the MAGAs are cheering it.
If only he targeted you personally, Tony. Then all would applaud.
China's immigration policy - Strict Legal Framework: Emphasizes legal channels for entry, with severe penalties for illegal crossings, overstays, or engaging in unauthorized work.
Yet you bitch about America enforcing immigration laws.
The TDS-addled lying pile of slimy lefty shit MG constantly makes assertions and never supports them. Any assertion by the TDS-addled lying pile of slimy lefty shit MG should be assumed to be a lie.
Walz +6
Waltz + 12.
Broke another meter.
hurting innocent people is what Biden and the democrats did for 4 years. Trump is trying to stop the pain from continuing and make a path to success for all.
If you are not willing to be honest about the harm caused by Biden and the democrats policies, especially the open border, then there's no hope for you.
What innocent people did Biden hurt? And don't you dare say the J6 traitors.
Let's start with all the people who agreed to pay the cartels to smuggle them in here, and ended up owing them a lot of money and working as virtual slaves to pay them off—many of whom ended up in prostitution or working for employers who sexually abused them. Biden's open borders made that possible.
If Biden had open borders why did they have to be smuggled?
Because the cartels didn't let people through without paying.
You are a stupid 混蛋, ain't you?
Everyone.
https://www.heritage.org/progressivism/commentary/6-failures-bidens-presidency-year-2
Now do China's illegal immigration policy.
Illegal immigrants are fed to hogs after having their transplantable organs removed.
This is part of your mental illness, feeling morally guilty for legal actions you can not control...
Seek help, you have many layers requiring remedy.
I am one of those moderates who is glad Trump closed Joe Biden's open border, but who has sympathy for illegals who earn their keep and stay out of trouble. But it is not just "violent" criminals I want deported; it is also thieves. I never bought into the progressive "reform" of de-facto legalizing shoplifting.
Do theives include illegals on welfare?
I would call them "public charges" and deport them accordingly.
Yes, and the democrats who give them our money are thieves too.
Most Americans? Or most people in your wealthy Phoenix enclave?
How's the yard work gonna get done?
"Back in my day, we young 'uns used to have to mow the lawn and rake the leaves in the snow and uphill both ways..."
Joking aside, yeah, my parents made me mow the lawn. We never hired a landscaper--ever. My friend in high school bought a riding lawnmower and trailer and started a lawn mowing business and made $20/hr while the rest of us were making at $3.75/hr minimum wage working in fast food. He was the son of a rich white CEO and showed me that being entrepreneurial was far smarter than working a W-2 job. Anyway, we didn't need Mexican illegal aliens; he would hire us high schoolers to help, and we all learned to love capitalism. But now, hiring high schoolers is illegal... If he tried to do that again today, he'd probably be fined for not having the proper business licenses, permits, workers' comp, etc.
^+1. Mowing the lawn was one of my 'allowance' chores.
And insurance and bonds. That's a major barrier to entry for all kinds of self-employment.
When the water runs out in Phoenix, the lawns will die anyway.
Why is Reeeason touting opinion polls when they frequently take the 20 side on a 80/20 issue?
The author should check the actual number of deportations for each year over the last couple of decades. The reality is that both Bush and Obama deported more and only Biden deported less.
Most of the hype is a media narrative coupled with the brash talk coming out of Trump, but reality is that there are more deportations relative to the historic low levels of deportation of Biden, but lower levels than Obama and even Bush.
There are fewer deportations because there are far fewer getting in.
Trump's deportations are largely illegals being ferreted out.
Also, as pointed out and continues to be dishonestly discounted during his first administration;
Welfare state or open borders, pick one.
If you pick both, the leaders who enacted both calling for people to come to the country are actively subverting democracy and plain civility and explicitly redistributing wealth. Morally reprehensibly so if they're knowingly encouraging people to march across tundras and deserts and bargain with cutthroats and get raped or die in the process. Anyone saddled with both open borders *and* a welfare state in such a situation, telling people "Don't fucking come here." is both serving democracy, opposing destructive wealth redistribution schemes, and deterring people from plodding across the various minefields that other people and nations have erected around the attractive nuisance the other scumbags have created.
The fact that a name-in-neon-lights, hotel and casino mogul shines light on the obvious and horrible consequences of their fake virtue is the fuel of the self-righteous fire of the vendetta. They *cannot*, in their own head, allow the unwashed masses to have a differing opinion because then, like with climate change or the inquisition, it means everything they have to question if *everything* they've believed and advocated was an evil lie because they've put off thought in favor of blind virtue signalling for so long.
"The public isn't seeing what it expected and that's affecting people's opinions."
This is why Federal policy should not be based on public opinion. Neither mass deportations nor ignoring illegal immigration is correct. The third alternative is the correct one and the only one that makes sense at all: allowing anyone who can pass a criminal background check and a simple contagious disease screening come into the United States and stay as long as they support themselves and do not commit any real crimes while here. LEGALIZE immigration and legalize work for pay, not just for visitors but for Americans, too! If voters in California are stupid enough to pay taxes to subsidize unproductive immigrants, it's no skin off my nose, but I would prefer to eliminate the welfare state entirely, not just for immigrants.
Mass deportations work. It just takes time. And the welfare state isn’t going away anytime soon. Unless we do the right thing and eliminate the democrat party.
Trump+++++ dementia scale
Whether mass deportations "work" or not depends upon what you're trying to accomplish. If you're trying to get rid of people you shouldn't be trying to get rid of, then success is bad. If you're trying to get rid of productive, Christian family people who only want a better life, then you're an evil jerk. If you don't believe in the principle of due process then you're not only a fool but dangerous to boot. The principle of due process is not intended to protect the guilty. It's intended to protect the innocent from evil people who lust for power and from incompetent law enforcement officers, of whom there are a dangerously large number. The welfare state isn't going away any time soon because people like you won't put the same effort into eliminating it as you put into scapegoating people you feel threatened by. Your insecurity is not an excuse to abuse innocent people and you disgust me.
So, JD is wrong……. again?
Damn. Didn’t see that coming.
Just wait until he’s the republican nominee in 2028.
Is Reason a news site that describes polls? I thought Reason was a libertarian site that provided libertarian opinions. The libertarian view is clearly in the minority because there are few elected officials. People don't read Reason to find out about polls. Why not mention actual libertarian views and build a case for them instead of droning on about polls?
Nope. That ship sailed a very long time ago.
The Reason position is clearly stated—wide open borders. No, they don't bother to build a case for that.
Most of the people I know who are extremely against illegal aliens entering our country are legal immigrants, who went through the process properly, paid the fees, took English classes, took the civics exam, etc.
I gave a friend an old laser printer from work so she could print all the paperwork needed to process her husband's immigration.
They are really pissed that others cut in line in front of them and want them all deported.
Also, they don't want the lower classes from the country they left to follow them here, bringing with them the culture and problems they left their home country to avoid. It's usually the lower classes that are illegal aliens that come here, because the middle and upper classes will take the legal route so as to enjoy the benefits of being legal. That said, I did know some people here illegally when they let their student visas lapse--those were middle-class (able to be accepted and afford US universities).
I think we should listen to these legal immigrants and block and deport all the illegal aliens. They know their home countries/cultures best. If they don't want to be around those people, why should we accept them here?
I either want illegal workers deported, or I want illegal workers to get exactly the same treatment as americans. Labor laws, Minimum wages, lots of benefits and freebies and high taxes. Lets see how most americans feel when that new roof costs twice as much, or how that illegal workers feels when 50% of his pay goes to the govt and he has to deal with cradle to the grave regulations and compete fairly with american workers for jobs.
If you entered the country illegally, you are a criminal.
All criminals must be deported.
“The public isn't seeing what it expected and that's affecting people's opinions."
That definitely couldn’t be because the media has done nothing but spin every single case as some kind of a front to humanity…
Pretty much this. The media falsely headlines every single arrest by ICE as a valedictorian, shouts about lack of due process no matter how many times said illegal has been ordered deported, and drops the story the second the truth is discovered, only to start again with the next one. They publish, without evidence, the claims by arrestees of mistreatment or lack of legal process. Then we wonder why the polls show declining support.
This is just cope. Mainstream media has lowest ratings ever. Diverse opinions proliferate the internet. You guys just suck at reasoning with people.
That definitely couldn’t be because the media has done nothing but spin every single case as some kind of a front to humanity…
Not every single case. Just the <0.01% of cases where they can gloss over the fact that the person was effectively a coyote themselves in order to point to the fact that one of three removal orders got lost in the mail as some sort of backhanded proof that the other 99.9% of deportations are *completely* unjustified.
I and others keep pointing this out. That, even if you believe Reason's numbers about ICE, it refutes their own numbers regarding the FBI and the "fact" that (illegal) immigrants commit fewer crimes.
Too bad Bastiat wasn't a journalist. He might have written about lies by omission, negative ethics, and how it turns into defending the costs of that which is not seen.
Trump is a dementia riddled old man saying all immigrants are rapist from insane asylums. The real people in charge of the Trump administration told the public that undocumented criminals would be the priority. But they changed that to simple meeting a quota and the result is finding anyone they can to deport. College student, chemotherapy patient, school teacher, family of US service persons. All they want is a number, not a policy. You don't like quotas in college admission, then you should not like quotas in deportations.
Christian National Socialists got their Svengali. Now let's see who does who's bidding.
That poll is apparently from early October, before the Somalian fraud bombshell and murder of NGs in DC.
In any case, you can't so neatly separate peaceful immigrants and hardened criminals as if they were like oil and water. If only 5% of the kids who ran around with matches burned down houses, the solution isn't "target ONLY the kids who burn down houses".
Illegal immigration is an inherently risky act, regardless of upside. This is the plain reality Reason refuses to accept. That hard illegal worker from Mexico could have prison or domestic violence record the government plain didn't get to see. Australia gave a gun license to a quiet "brick layer" with ISIS ties and now 12 Jews are dead.
A handful of Somalis stole 9 to 18 billion. The Minnesota budget is 33 billion. It is total lunacy. America does not have infinite amount of money to play the world's orphanage. We're playing with fire here. 5,000 years from now the future generation may look back at America like a mythical Atlantis like nation that was destroyed by immigration and spending. A tragic nation and cautionary tale.
We have to deport them. If they had families and deep roots, we could grant stay of deportation until they get green cards. But we have to make sure they can't vote, can't run for public office, and can't start businesses or non profit organizations - at least not without proper vetting. Most Americans will agree with this.
I realize open borders is a basically libertarian position. I thought the rule of law was, too, though. Is it a libertarian position to ignore laws you don't agree with? This seems more like anarchy.
Darren reproduces exactly Christian National Socialist apologias for shooting people over beer (1920-33), plant leaves (1936-2025) and for being Jewish when Jews were outlawed. The most gullible quarter of a population elects the least honest 400 or so creeps to pass moronic laws--then act shocked, SHOCKED when individuals interpret them as the robbery and murder they actually are.
Tuccille is reeling from buyer's remorse AND bovine incomprehension of the workings of law-changing spoiler votes. Pitiful.
Mass deportations is just broken window policing.
Americans overall favor more legal immigration?? Don't believe it. Immigrants nowadays seem to find a area and make it their own.. Dearborn etc.. have no desire to change the culture they brought with them and in the case of the Somalis live off welfare. This country needs to stop bringing the brown third world here.
