Plus: Predictions for Mamdani's mayorship, ICE leadership changes, and more...

A sign saying "We accept food stamps" outside a grocery store | John Marshall Mantel/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom
(John Marshall Mantel/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom)

Government shutdown collateral damage: Unless Congress strikes a deal to both reopen and fund the federal government, certain benefits will cease to be doled out starting this Saturday, November 1.

Among them: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, or SNAP, the food stamps used by some 42 million Americans annually, with an average benefit of $187 per recipient per month.

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

The administration says it will not devote emergency funds to keeping benefits going. A disclaimer at the top of SNAP's website reads rather candidly: "Senate Democrats have now voted 12 times to not fund the food stamp program, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Bottom line, the well has run dry. At this time, there will be no benefits issued November 01. We are approaching an inflection point for Senate Democrats. They can continue to hold out for healthcare for illegal aliens and gender mutilation procedures or reopen the government so mothers, babies, and the most vulnerable among us can receive critical nutrition assistance."

I was just googling to find out what the eligibility is for SNAP and discovered @USDA is not fucking around. pic.twitter.com/eTTbTUWLz3

— Bethany S. Mandel (@bethanyshondark) October 27, 2025

A memo from the U.S. Department of Agriculture says that contingency funds "are only available to supplement regular monthly benefits when amounts have been appropriated for, but are insufficient to cover, benefits."

"The contingency fund is a source of funds for contingencies, such as the Disaster SNAP program, which provides food purchasing benefits for individuals in disaster areas, including natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods, that can come on quickly and without notice," adds the memo. "For example, Hurricane Melissa is currently swirling in the Caribbean and could reach Florida. Having funds readily available allows the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to mobilize quickly in the days and weeks following a disaster."

And transferring funds from elsewhere "would pull away funding for school meals and infant formula" like "the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, and Child and Adult Care Feeding Program," as well as "the Special Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC)." It's not even clear to WIC recipients how long those benefits will continue.

"For nearly six million households that rely on a program that helps low-income Americans pay for energy costs, it means facing expensive heating bills and the possibility of utility shut-offs in the winter," reports The New York Times. Ditto for the roughly 65,000 children enrolled in Head Start programs nationally.

Different strains of "welfare queen" discourse have predictably circulated as a result of the SNAP cuts. And there are some extremely bad and entitled takes circulating on TikTok, including welfare recipients basically saying they'll now steal instead of paying for food. But the discourse should not distract from the plights of people who really will be harmed by a reduction in benefits, who are worried about how to feed their families, who feel spurned by a Trump administration that finds funding by any means necessary (including possibly illegal ones) to pay active-duty military but not welfare recipients.

Scenes from New York: Predictions for the future have now entered "how bad will it be, really" territory:

I think Mamdani will go further than BdB — particularly on policing.

My predictions:

•The gang database does not survive his mayoralty;
•We go at least 6mos with the jails on Rikers closed and fewer than three of the borough-based facilities completed (cutting the jail…

— Rafael A. Mangual (@Rafa_Mangual) October 27, 2025

And this right here is a rather good analysis of "Mamdani as class avatar" for a very specific class of people:

(I don't blame anyone for not reading all this, but) yeah, I think Mamdani actually is coherent as a class-politics avatar of the sort of downwardly mobile (creative) elites you see struggling to hang on in the very expensive western half of Brooklyn who work in industries that… https://t.co/VwE5aYUO5H

QUICK HITS

  • "President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico said the United States would be giving her country 'a few more weeks' to make trade policy changes to avoid the 30 percent tariffs that were set to go into effect on Saturday," reports The New York Times. "The White House has asked Mexico to remove what it calls 54 barriers to trade that aren't tariffs, such as disputes about intellectual property."
  • "Milei's triumph laid bare the weakness of the Peronist opposition," writes Juan Pablo Spinetto for Bloomberg. "Even after adding its various factions, Peronism trailed La Libertad Avanza by nine percentage points in the Lower House race—and by 14 points in the Senate. Its once-dominant grip on the upper chamber, held for 42 years through 2021, will weaken considerably when the new Congress is sworn in December. Fuerza Patria, the main Peronist affiliation, even lost narrowly in Buenos Aires province—just weeks after a landslide win that had seemed to put Milei's government on the ropes." This result "underscores the urgent need for Peronism to reform—to accept a minimum of market rules and economic rationality—or risk further irrelevance."
  • "New York Gov. Kathy Hochul boasted this month that the state is sending tax rebate checks between $150 and $400 to low- and middle-income taxpayers. What she didn't tell you is that the state is automatically raising income taxes every year through inflation bracket creep," reports The Wall Street Journal.
  • "The Trump administration has begun to purge Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials in offices in five major U.S. cities and fill some of those top posts with senior Border Patrol agents who will take over interior immigration enforcement in those regions, according to five sources familiar with the plans," reports The Washington Examiner.
  • New levels of bitchiness heretofore unseen in American politics:

Maybe if you channeled all this anger into swimming faster you wouldn't have come in fifth. https://t.co/gkiEyZ8JGX

— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) October 27, 2025

Good thread from journalist Megan McArdle on why Ocasio-Cortez doesn't know what she's talking about:

More broadly, this is why Democrats keep losing on this issue: they make sick dunks for each other without thinking about how they come off to normies. People with kids in serious sports know, as AOC apparently doesn't, just how much commitment it takes.

Saw FB video--no way to know if it was real or staged (didn't seem AI)--of woman pushing a cart of junk food and soda out of a Dollar General screaming at the counter-person (off camera) that she needed this food because her food stamps got cut off, so she was just going to take it. She shoved the cart at the person filming her after she loaded the stuff into her car.

If there is a mass shoplifting event at Walmart, etc. I'm pretty sure the fruits & vegetable section will not be impacted (but TVs, etc. might).

It's obviously the correct constitutional and libertarian answer. But I don't think that means one can't acknowledge that it will make things difficult for some people when the benefits stop. That's one of the most pernicious things about the welfare state. People develop dependence on it over generations making it politically very difficult to change. To get most people to accept the change, you're going to have to show that there is a path to where we want to be that minimizes the pain. Politics do be that way.

I am for doing good to the poor, but...I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. I observed...that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.

I completely agree with Franklin there. But it's still a tough sell politically. Especially after generations of welfare has trained half the country that it's government's job to deal with all these problems.

It is undoubtedly entrenched. Which means the sooner you start unwinding it, the better. You aren't doing these people any favors by convincing them they aren't responsible for their lives or that they lack agency. It's some dehumanizing shit, which is why so many people act less than human.

I honestly believe we need to bring back shame. Food stamps should be big, colorful and embarrassing. "Free lunch" at school should be call "taxpayer funded charity." People should be horrified to use these services as a way of life and shamed for doing so. They should be reserved for citizens in a short-term, emergency situation only.

"The Democrats finally grew something that can pass courteous muster as a "spine" in shutting the government down, largely over GOP-desired cuts to Obamacare subsidies."

I keep seeing this sort of phrasing in the media (you can't hate the media enough).

Republicans are not proposing CUTTING any Obamacare subsidies. Republicans are simply allowing the COVID-era subsidies the Democrats inserted into the IRA, with expiration dates that Democrats fashioned into that law, to expire as the law Democrats passed--without a single Republican vote--requires.

There is no left wing of the Democrat Party; there’s just the Democrat Party. Even an alleged moderate, like Abigail Spanberger (D- Stepford), can’t bring herself to disendorse her homicidal ticket mate. She’s a radical who thinks male sex offenders should walk around waving their junk in kids’ locker rooms, and that you should be able to perform an abortion up until birth, when, presumably, Jay Jones will take over responsibility for killing the kid.

On useful idiots...why are progressives allying themselves with Islamists...

    https://www.andrewdoyle.org/p/the-useful-idiots-of-tower-hamlets

A viral video circulating this weekend from the demonstrations in Tower Hamlets in London seems to encapsulate this form of useful idiocy in microcosmic form. As mobs of masked men surge through the streets chanting ‘Allahu akbar’ - some even praising the massacre of Jewish Israeli civilians on 7th October 2023 - they push past a group of mostly white leftists holding placards, looking bewildered and underfed. One specimen in a duffel coat mutters timidly through his loudhailer: ‘There’s no need for that! We’re on the same side, bruv’. To which one of the burly men in black simply retorts: ‘No, we’re not.’

There is a species of leftist that is so blinded to the lack of compassion in its enemies that it sees them as friends. The Chinese even have a word – baizuo (白左) – to describe white Western liberals whose generous nature leaves them open to exploitation. I am reminded of Nietzsche’s remark in Beyond Good and Evil (1886): ‘There is a point in the history of society when it becomes so pathologically soft and tender that among other things it sides even with those who harm it, criminals, and does this quite seriously and honestly’. For the most egregious example of recent years, look no further than the absurdly self-defeating phenomenon of ‘Queers for Palestine’.

I don't think there is one simple answer to why leftists are so ridiculous. But I'd say a lot of it is more misdirected compassion combined with shallow thinking and virtue signaling for social acceptance. At least for the retards on the ground. The more elite leftists probably are mostly liars and psychopaths.

By the way, this is the fracture that some in the cultural space have been pointing out as evidence that the alliance is crumbling (or beginning to). I'm not super-optimistic because the golden rule is always, "The thing is never the thing, the thing is always the revolution" which allows the left to instantly pivot from contradictory issue to contradictory issue without pulling a muscle.

WaPo likes the idea of Trump's ballroom...

Privately, many alumni of the Biden and Obama White Houses acknowledge the long-overdue need for an event space like what Trump is creating. It is absurd that tents need to be erected on the South Lawn for state dinners, and VIPs are forced to use porta-potties.

Trump joins a long list of presidents who have left their imprint on the White House. Theodore Roosevelt replaced greenhouses to construct the West Wing. William Howard Taft constructed the first Oval Office in 1909. Richard M. Nixon converted a swimming pool into the press briefing room in 1970. The modern East Wing wasn’t even built until World War II to cover up an underground bunker. Harry S. Truman gutted the White House interior and added the balcony that bears his name. Purists decried it. Now it’s a hallmark.

The White House cannot simply be a museum to the past. Like America, it must evolve with the times to maintain its greatness. Strong leaders reject calcification. In that way, Trump’s undertaking is a shot across the bow at NIMBYs everywhere.

"But Trump didn't even consult with historians..."

      WaPo continued:

After a fence jumper got inside the White House in 2014, it was obvious that better perimeter fencing needed to be installed. But doing so involved five public meetings of the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) over two years, as members took pains to ensure the fencing complied with environmental rules. Construction didn’t begin until July 2019.

Or consider the modest Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial near the National Air and Space Museum. Congress authorized its creation in 1999. Architect Frank Gehry was selected in 2009. The NCPC rejected Gehry’s initial design proposal in 2014 before approving a revised plan the next year. The Commission of Fine Arts gave its approval in 2017. The memorial wasn’t opened until late 2020. By contrast, Eisenhower planned and executed D-Day in about six months.

Closest you get for Men is Jonathan Horton at 5'1" and ~125 lbs.

Of course, Horton medaled in events like rings and pommel horse that are both more narrow and require greater strength, both relative and absolute, than the 13 versions of interpretive dance that Biles competes in to stack up medals.

At the same time, there is a critical difference between a woman pretending to be a man, or vice versa, in interpretive dance, the same in a competitive race, and the same in adversarial or combat sports.

One is literally subjective interpretation, one is objective and may or may not be fixed with a simple asterisk, and one is potentially putting people in the hospital or worse.

And, again, the whole thing "was just about using public restrooms".

Women's gymnastics is a hell of a lot more than interpretive dance. Honestly I wish they'd just drop the interpretive dance parts of it and just do the feats of strength and agility parts. The "artistic impression" part (or whatever they call it) always seems kind of tacked on to me. And unless the only standard is being short and being able to stick your head up your own ass, men would probably dominate most women's only gymnastics events too.

This is a nuclear powered and nuclear warhead capable cruise missile reportedly with a multi-day loitering time and range capable of any target on the planet.

Earlier yesterday, two carrier aircraft from the USS Nimitz crashed 30 minutes apart. Thankfully, all personnel survived. The incident is reportedly being blamed on bad fuel.

Food banks are so full of donated food, the only reason people would miss SNAP is for convenience. And not only food, but in many cases clothing, toiletries, and household goods and supplies, which SNAP won't buy. And the foods often include fancy stuff like frozen venison which it's very hard to get in stores. And in some cases the freshest produce, grown by teaching projects attached to the volunteers. SNAP is convenient in that you can use it at stores that are open long hours rather than intermittently staffed by volunteers like the food pantries. But some of the pantries offer regularly scheduled hot meals on the spot for senior citizens who may not have much of a social life otherwise.

Our local food banks are stuffed to the brim with canned goods, rice, etc. There are also pop up mini pantries in many peoples front yards or on street corners.

They tend to stay stuffed year round actually. Because when you get used to a monthly EBT balance that you can buy cheetos, ice cream, cinnamon toast crunch, and skittles....rice and beans doesn't tend to make the cut.

And dont take my word for it, watch any of the 1000 tiktok videos these welfare EBT whales self report. Also, they take in roughly 2-3x the calories a normal citizen does, due to buying straight up junk food. And it shows (most of them are morbidly obese)

I’ve seen it firsthand. I used to be a grocery cashier about 25 years ago. The folks with the Link card (Illinois EBT) would mostly buy the junk with it. Rarely would I see those same people buy anything like beans, rice, or produce with the card. The only food benefits that were tightly controlled were the WIC ones where it is stated right on the check what it was good for such as one gallon of milk, two cans of formula, etc.

        1. Chumby   10 hours ago

And they would buy the staples with WIC/EBT then buy the booze and smokes with “their money.” Self checkout lines are great for avoiding the pajama class and their two sets of groceries. They tend to be as slow as the bluehairs that insist on paying with a check.

Of course, the UN's "solution" is more subsidies of the "right" foods and taxes on the "wrong" foods. As if the 350lb fatties would buy healthier food if only they could afford it.

I'll point out my food-stamp program would ONLY provide free rice and beans and multi-vitamins, might spring for an electric rice-cooker. No one would ever worry about starving, but they would be mostly prevented from using taxpayer dollars for a lifestyle decision like buying hot dogs, Ding Dongs, Fritos, and soda, let alone from using EBT at McDonalds!

Opinion: It’s not just America: Obesity, a disease of poverty, has swept the world

Not long ago, obesity was popularly considered a disease of affluence — the product of excess and overindulgence. Today, obesity is increasingly recognized as a disease of poverty, rooted in inequality and linked to undernutrition in the earliest years of life.

This rise is contributing to a dangerous surge in non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, hypertension and cancer. Treating type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease — much of it linked to excess consumption of sugar, salt and trans fats — already consumes a growing share of national health budgets.

In 2020, global obesity was estimated to cost nearly $2 trillion. It is expected to rise to over $3 trillion by 2030 and hit $18 trillion by 2060 — which would be equivalent to 3.3 percent of global GDP.

You think a diet of rice and beans would ameliorate obesity? Nah. To people with a tendency toward obesity, rice and beans is fattening — and to many of us, obese or not, engassening and irritable bowel ensyndroming!

But the pantries have the "junk" too — not fast movers like Cokes, although sometimes fancy canned sodas that aren't moving off store shelves fast enough, but also bags of corn chips, boxes of crackers, candies, pretzels, doughnuts, etc. And not stuff like pasteurized liquid milk that'd require refrigeration, but shelf-stable UHT milk and frequently cheeses. Very often small packages of stuff, not the bulk packaging you might imagine. Plus some low-sodium and no-sugar-added canned goods as well as regular canned vegetables and fruits. Often fresh baked goods like bagels and more breads and cakes than you can shake a stick at. Even weird things like pressurized cheese spread in cans.

So, no, food bank fare isn't particularly unattractive to those used to Cheez Doodles or the like. It runs the gamut, but of course doesn't have the selection of a supermarket in one place

Real libertarianism from a real libertarian, printed up two years ago at the Dark Side regarding the regulatory state and now shadow banned by Google.

    https://mises.org/mises-wire/back-future-morphs-dystopia

    Excerpts:

It is 2023, eight years after 2015, the year of flying cars and climate-controlled clothing that Marty McFly traveled to in a time machine. In our own world, the ruling elite wants to ban cars to control the climate. How did we get here? What caused the discrepancy between our vision of a more advanced future and the reality we face now?

We had reason to expect it. From 1860–1970, the United States grew at an average of over 5 percent per year. But starting in the 1970s, and for the last five decades since then, America has experienced an average GDP growth rate of 2.7 percent. Had the previous growth rate continued, the economy would be at least 65 percent larger than it is today. The current GDP would be an additional $15 trillion, or $45,000 per capita.

Starting in the late 1960s, the number of pages published in the Federal Register exploded (figure 1). The number of pages of the Code of Federal Regulations, which is thought to reflect the overall regulatory burden, has increased by a factor of 10, from twenty thousand to over two hundred thousand pages (figure 2).

The longest period of low growth in our history is also characterized by the expansion of the regulatory state. Corporate consolidation skyrocketed in the same period. In 1970, the top four companies in any given industry made up on average 20 percent of the market share. Today, the top four companies in any given industry control roughly 80 percent. Regulatory monopolies create single points from which special interests can control whole markets and enrich the wealthiest people. They are fully endorsed by the elite institutions yet sold through the pretense of keeping vulnerable consumers safe from asymmetries of power.

Regulatory restrictions slow the rate of innovation by creating barriers to market entry but also by protecting corporations that operate within the confines of the regulatory standards from legal liability for harming consumers or the environment.

Regulatory capture was described by Lao Tzu 2,500 years ago in China. “In the kingdom the multiplication of prohibitive enactments increases the poverty of the people” and “the more display there is of legislation, the more thieves and robbers there are.” Such policies drastically increase income inequality, not to keep you safe but so that special interests can bring back mercantilism by controlling markets as guilds once did. The resulting lack of options facilitates technocratic control of society. Nothing would hurt the average billionaire more than to see the average American stop falling for this ruse.

Where’s Reason discussing reducing the regulatory state? Oh, they’re too busy whining about drugs, buttsex, food trucks, and other libertine shit.

"the people who just don't feel like workin' God bless 'em"

I use these exact words all the time, but don't know where I got them (my uncle, maybe). Is this from something?

I’ve started a gofundme as well! It’s to open a women’s clinic in Prince George that will specialize in reproductive rights. I’ll call it:

          Mother’s Lament pregnancy clinic.

If you or any other Christian Nationalists try anything illegal the Mounties can give you a starlight tour!

Haven't actually lived in Prince George for a while now, you creepy freak. But I won't say where I am now as you psychopaths have been killing a lot of people recently for being mean to you on the internet.

American gay male prostitute and member of the Portland chapter of “Trantifa Furries” attempted to assassinate Canadian Metis man in BC. Authorities believe the prostitute’s shot missed when he was simultaneously texting child porn to an acquaintance located in Dog Dick, Georgia.

The arrested suspect kept saying, “Viva la raza” and “If you get me off, I’ll get you off.” An initial psych analysis of the suspect shows he is mildly retarded and suffers from an inability to control his emotions.

Police records obtained from Portland show that in addition to many arrests for prostitution including several while servicing male Nike mid level managers, he had also been cited 35 times for defecating in public, arrested for protesting a Mormon temple by throwing his own feces at parishioners, and investigated several times for making online threats.

His bail was set at $200 (Canadian), which he could not afford.

You know sarc has never given a damn cent to charity. But has taken a lot when he was homeless.

Maybe this is why he assumes poor people are all democrats. He was a homeless democrat?
