Conversion Therapy at the Court

Supreme Court takes on conversion therapy: Yesterday, the Supreme Court heard arguments in Chiles v. Salazar, a case that will have far-reaching implications when a ruling is released in June. It deals with the Colorado law banning conversion therapy for gay and transgender minors, and weighing therapists' free speech rights (versus whether the statute places a "legal regulation on professional conduct," as The New York Times put it).

Colorado's existing statute prohibits "any practice or treatment" that attempts to change a minor's "gender expressions or to eliminate or reduce sexual or romantic attraction or feelings toward individuals of the same sex." Therapist Kaley Chiles "wishes to counsel religious teens dealing with their sexual orientation and gender dysphoria in ways she says are consistent with biblical teachings on identity," per The Washington Post. Chiles says she "does not want to convert gay and transgender teens, but wants to help those who wish to 'reduce or eliminate unwanted sexual attractions, change sexual behaviors, or grow in the experience of harmony with one's physical body.'" Lawyers for Chiles have argued that the current law respects the rights of therapists who wish to offer so-called "gender-affirming" care, but not Christian therapists who wish to offer something that could be construed as the inverse. Colorado's solicitor general, on the other hand, says the state is regulating the quality of medical treatment provided to protect residents from harm.

"People have been trying to do conversion therapy for 100 years with no record of success," Colorado's solicitor general told the justices, citing opposition by groups like the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association. "The medical consensus is usually very reasonable and it's very important. But have there been times when the medical consensus has been politicized, has been taken over by ideology?" Justice Samuel Alito countered, hitting the nail right on the head.

I know it's less sexy than the arguments flying back and forth at SCOTUS, but I think the Colorado "conversion therapy" ban is unconstitutionally vague. I read the statute several times and I can't tell what's permitted and what's prohibited.

— Dilan Esper (@dilanesper) October 7, 2025

Now what does it mean to "change behaviors or gender expression"? Doesn't a whole bunch of therapy try and change behaviors?

And what about suggesting a patient transition because they have gender dysphoria? Is that an "effort to change gender expression"?

— Dilan Esper (@dilanesper) October 7, 2025

Why has this not been a bigger news story? On Sunday, a man with over 200 homemade explosive devices was arrested outside the D.C. church where Supreme Court justices were slated to attend a service marking the start of their term. With him was a manifesto condemning Catholics, Jews, Supreme Court justices, and ICE.

"D.C. police first approached [Louis] Geri inside a green tent posted on the top of the stairs leading to St. Matthew's Cathedral as they cleared the block for Red Mass—an annual religious service marking the start of a new Supreme Court term and honoring the judiciary," reports The Washington Post. "You might want to stay back and call the federales, I have explosives," Geri told the cops. "Do you want me to throw one out, I'll test one out on the streets? I have a hundred-plus of them," he added, according to court records. "If you just step back, I'll take out that tree. No one will get hurt, there will just be a hole where that tree used to be."

"Several of your people are gonna die from one of these," he told the cops, as he was being apprehended. Devices appeared "fully functional" after being inspected by specialists, per court records, and Geri—who is being held without bond—faces eight charges.

Scenes from New York: I know this is a little hyperlocal, but yesterday we had two broad-daylight subway-system crimes: One man, beaten to death around 3 p.m. at a downtown Brooklyn station; another man, whose face and back were slashed with a knife, around 4 p.m. at a train station in Jackson Heights, Queens.

A man was viciously beaten to death outside a subway station in downtown Brooklyn this afternoon — and his still-at-large attacker rifled through his pockets before fleeing.

QUICK HITS

  • Massive delays snarled air traffic at Nashville and Chicago airports, and the Federal Aviation Administration—which says it's been missing about 3,000 controllers nationwide for a while, in need of new hires—reported that air traffic control in Philadelphia, Las Vegas, Houston, and Boston were also short-staffed. "The Nashville airport said that controllers would rely on radar systems from the airport tower Tuesday night because of 'insufficient staffing' and that the en route center in Memphis—more than 200 miles away—would take over approach control later in the evening," reports The New York Times. The controllers' union released a rather strange statement saying that "it is normal for a few air traffic controllers to call in sick on any given day, and this is the latest example of how fragile our aviation system is in the midst of a national shortage of these critical safety professionals." During government shutdowns, controllers are expected to work without pay, but federal law guarantees they'll receive full backpay when it ends. I wonder if this mysterious sickness will suddenly cease when the shutdown ends.
  • "We can't have a policy where we just blow up ships where we don't even know the people's names," said Sen. Rand Paul (R–Ky.) to Bloomberg. "It can't be the policy for drug interdiction, either in the country or outside the country." Paul cited the high error rate of Coast Guard interdictions, which don't end up finding drugs about one-quarter of the time. "So they have made an error, but they don't kill them. But we've blown up four boats now, and if the percentages hold true, did one of those four boats not have drug dealers on it?" he asked.
  • New pattern emerging: Grand juries declining to indict protesters engaged in activities opposed to Trump's immigration enforcement.
  • Meet "Porky," Lima's MAGA mayor.
  • Katie Porter, who is running for governor of California, throws a fit over being asked to answer basic questions:

And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this thy hand grenade, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the Lord did grin. And the people did feast upon the lambs, and sloths, and carp, and anchovies, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats, and large chunks...

And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

The idiots trying to run Colorado (and California, and all blue states and cities) believe that we should always support what crazy people say.

    That explains a lot.

    1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 months ago

Kagan actually seems poised to strike down the law.

The law is executed in a purely discriminatory manner. One side can use drugs, surgery, and have the state hide it from their parents. The other side can't even mention it.

Guess it is nut cutting time.

      2. InsaneTrollLogic (smarter than The Average Dude)   2 months ago

That would be interesting, a 7-2 striking down of the law carrying at least one liberal justice.

7-3 with roberts joining KBJ. Unless he assigns himself the author to make the decision meaningless. 33 states have these laws so he may want to limit it and give directions to Colorado on how to implement it to save it.

        HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

      2. Wizzle Bizzle   2 months ago

I realize your question is rhetorical, but the answer is a hard no. I live in CO so I'm "lucky" enough to have heard hours of discussion about this law. Under the law, "experts" are allowed to proselytize all they want about the benefits of cutting off your tits or dick to reveal the true you, but they can't suggest these feelings you're having might be a passing fancy or mental illness. It is decidedly a one-way street, which is among the reasons it is likely to be struck down. Though the reason this court will likely strike it down is because it's so clearly in violation of 1A, which they have been pretty staunch in defending.

      3. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 months ago

No. And that is the viewpoint discrimination.

Whats hilarious is the Colorado solicitor argued that attempting to change an innate characteristic through counseling is dangerous. Yet biological sex/DNA is more innate than sexual preference.

No idea. Ask them in the Scenes From Chicago:

      https://cwbchicago.com/2025/10/man-stabbed-bloomingdale-trail-bucktown-chicago.html

A man was stabbed and choked unconscious Tuesday night after confronting a group of teenagers who stole a wheel from his bicycle on the Bloomingdale Trail in Bucktown, according to a Chicago police report.

Around 9 p.m., officers responded to a report of a person stabbed on the trail near the 1800 block of North Wood Street. They found a 33-year-old man suffering from a stab wound to the abdomen.

Police said he told officers he saw a group of six or seven Hispanic male teenagers wearing hoodies and backpacks, and one of them stole a wheel from his bike.

He confronted the thief and got into an altercation with members of the group. The man said someone in the group stabbed him in the abdomen and choked him until he lost consciousness before the group fled westbound along the trail.

Video reviewed by investigators reportedly shows a teen in a gray hoodie and dark pants pulling an object from a fanny pack, stabbing the victim, then returning the item to the bag before running away.

The victim was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in serious condition.

    https://nypost.com/2025/10/06/us-news/virginia-ag-candidate-jay-jones-said-if-more-cops-got-killed-they-wouldnt-shoot-so-many-people-lawmaker-claims/

Coyner has come forward with new allegations against Jones, telling the Virginia Scope Monday that during a 2020 conversation about qualified immunity, she told Jones that without the legal protection, police officers would get killed.

“Well, maybe if a few of them died, that they would move on, not shooting people, not killing people,” Jones responded according to Coyner.

    ------------

Meanwhile the press and Virgina Democrats are covering for him.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/media-goes-full-damage-control-on-jay-jones-scandal-that-could-cost-dems-virginia-election/ar-AA1NYdx3

The legacy press is circling the wagons for Democratic Virginia attorney general candidate Jay Jones after the release of text messages that could derail his campaign.

Major outlets including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Reuters and Bloomberghave ignored the scandal involving Jones’s disturbing private messages and use of a reckless driving conviction for political gain. Neither story appears on their websites, and none have published follow-up coverage or reactions from political figures — including President Donald Trump — to the revelations.

Even CNN downplayed the scandal with a soft headline — “Virginia’s Democratic nominee for attorney general facing pressure over resurfaced text messages” — that omitted any reference to the messages’ contents.

CNN Politics homepage screenshot showing the story headlined “Virginia’s Democratic nominee for attorney general facing pressure over resurfaced text messages” by Eva McKend on October 4, 2025. (Screenshot/CNN)

Axios only offered a brief mention Monday, headlining its piece “GOP unveils 7-figure ad campaign on ‘two bullets’ text by Jay Jones,” but the headline likewise failed to explain what the messages actually said.

"New York takes another step towards being London with a big celebration of slaughtering Jewish women and children"

    Spiked has a similar take...

    https://www.spiked-online.com/2025/10/06/campus-feminists-have-rebranded-rape-as-resistance/

At Goldsmiths, University of London, the Feminist Library has really outdone itself. It has decided to mark the two year anniversary of the 7 October pogrom – the day, that is, when Hamas militants tortured, murdered and raped their way through southern Israel – with a film night celebrating the ‘Palestinian resistance’.

‘Join us for a night of remembrance’, reads the library’s Instagram page, as if approaching the anniversary of a favourite Disney classic. Another post followed, stating that the library stands ‘unequivocally’ with the Palestinian cause. Feminism is a ‘framework that demands people struggle for their freedom’, it told its followers, reminding them that real feminists don’t organise ‘because we may identify as women’, but to fight ‘white supremacy, Western empire and patriarchy’.

In other words, sticking up for women comes pretty low down on the list of priorities. So low, in fact, that when presented with a choice between solidarity with women who were beaten, raped and murdered, and the men that did this, these tote-bag feminists are more than happy to side with the latter.

Good heavens. The fact that they can't take just the one day to at least acknowledge that the attack was an evil, despicable thing to be remembered and condemned really tells you where these people's priorities are. I'd say it was tone deaf, but I think it's well beyond that into straight celebration of evil. If you think Israel is in the wrong with some of their policies and actions, fine. If you think that means that all of their citizens are fair game to murder, you can fuck right off.

BLM chapters posting the paratrooper with a palestine flag, "gas the jews" being displayed in Sydney, mass celebrations in the streets with palestine flags all on October 8 2023. It was clear as day back then, its no different now. They were celebrating.

They waited until 39 pages into a 54-page supplement, separate from the paper, to disclose the higher risk for vaccinated patients under 21 who are reinfected, for conditions such as "acute kidney injury," abdominal pain, "abnormal liver enzyme" and even long COVID itself.

The incidence rate (per 1M people) for PASC among the vaccinated was 1,145 and 2,901 for first and second infection, respectively, and among the unvaccinated, 764 and 1,690. For acute kidney injury, 795 and 1,429 versus 497 and 1,121; abnormal liver enzyme, 1,858 and 2,748 versus 879 and 1,282; and abdominal pain, 22,492 and 31,065 versus 15,670 and 21,135.

Nothing was buried. That's where they presented the raw data that was not relevant to the point of the study which was long COVID in adolescents with reinfection. All of these data were included in the main manuscript page 9 as relative risk, the relevant comparison for their study

      They found (per million)
Acute kidney injury was for vaccinated was 497 and 1122 for 1st and 2nd infection respectively vs. 796 and 1429 in unvaccinated, but no statistical analysis or confounding variables to elucidate if that is a significant difference.

      Some other findings:

abdominal pain [15671 and 21136, unvaccinated] vs. [22429 and 31065, vaccinated]

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (often fatal): [55 and 146, unvaccinated] vs [- and - vaccinated]

cognitive impairment: [3647 and 5088, unvaccinated] vs [1549 and 2096 vaccinated]

Thrombophlebitis and thromboembolism: [448 and 1137, unvaccinated] vs [564 and 535 vaccinated]

This is how scientific articles are written. You emphasize the data relevant to your study plan, then if we're lucky, include the raw data in a supplemental file. Either the researchers or the journal should be credited for sharing raw data that was outside the scope of the research.

The article is organized in a way that is appropriate for scientific writing and hardly deserved the critique of some hack journalist with an agenda that clearly doesn't understand what they're reporting while simultaneously highlighting data that supports their narrative while omitting data inconvenient to their agenda. Greg Piper from Justthenews fails to understand the study was not powered to deliver the conclusion he made nor the ones he himself buried.

The ladies at The View suggested that everyone attend the Super Bowl in "brownface" and adopt hispanic accents so that ICE won't be able to find the real brown people.

    https://x.com/NickFondacaro/status/1975218861738737950

Joy Behar calls Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem a racist for ICE going being at the Super Bowl next year when Bad Bunny is performing (they're there every year). Whoopi instructs people to attend the Super Bowl in Latinoface to confuse ICE:

JOY BEHAR: She's threatening to go to the Super Bowl when Bad Bunny is there and round up all these people that are illegal immigrants. Do you think that she would go if it was Garth brooks or Eminem or Taylor Swift or any other white person?!

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Let me understand what you're saying because she's going to go to the Super Bowl and round up -- how is she going to know who is who?

BEHAR: Because the supreme court has given permission to question anyone who has a Spanish accent, who has a dark skin. That's why!

GOLDBERG: Here is the thing, everybody, get a little cocoa butter, sit in the sun, that's the first thing. An then -- and this is the only time you can probably ever do this, give yourself a Latin accent.

BEHAR: You know, Whoopi, that is such a good idea.

GOLDBERG: And just see -- and see if she can tell who is who.

The Left is trying to party like it’s 1859.

    https://johnkassnews.com/confederate-chaos-in-chicago/

    Are we living in 1859?

I ask it that way because all you can see and hear from Chicago are chaos, anarchy, violence, leftist conspiracy theories and exhortations by Democrats to ruin, and murder federal officials enforcing the law. It’s getting worse by the day.

A leader of the Latin Kings Street gang was charged with ordering the murder of U.S. Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino, whom Gov. JB Pritzker spent days defaming. Pritzker put a target on Bovino. The Latin King leader Juan Espinoza Martinez is now under arrest. Is that insurrection?

    [ed - it was a $10,000 bounty.]

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (6 percent approval rating) and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker continue to demonize federal law enforcement officers. And the Chicago Police Department shamed itself by telling officers to stand down rather than come to the aid of Immigration and Customs enforcement agents being swarmed by leftist mobs on the Southwest Side and nearby suburbs.

I’ve been a reporter in Chicago for almost 50 years and I’ve never heard of Chicago police abandoning fellow Law Enforcement officers. It goes against everything I know about them. Shameful and disgusting are just words. This is more than words. There may not have been an order to stand down, but the order was clear: turn your cars around and leave it alone.

At a press conference on Monday, the comically illiterate buffoon Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, already famous for his battles with reality and his wild panic attacks continued painting his deranged Civil War fantasies.

This time the mayor claimed that “the extreme Right in this country refuse to accept the results of the Civil War. They have repeatedly called for a rematch.”

    A rematch?

Republicans were opposed to slavery then, and it was the Democrat Party protecting slavery and slaughtering Americans in the hope of preserving it. And they fought to allow the racist KKK to spread fear in the South.

For years now, Chicago Democrats—from Johnson and Gov. J.B. Pritzker have gone on and on, screaming, full of angry rage against federal forces enforcing federal immigration law. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson: “The right wing of this country wants a REMATCH of the Civil War… The President has declared war on the people of Chicago and people across America.”

Again I ask all Americans: Are we living in 1859?

The Democrats are still feeding the hungry assassination culture that took the life of Christian youth organizer Charlie Kirk just weeks ago.

In Virginia for example, the Virginia Democrat candidate for state Attorney General is Jay Jones. In texts with a fellow legislator, Jones fantasized about killing a Republican political opponent, even killing the opponent’s children, and pissing on the graves.

Democrat leaders aren’t demanding he disqualify himself. They protect Jay Jones in the bosom of the assassination culture.

Rather than avoid Jones, Democrats are doubling down, endorsing him. They think they can ride this one out with backing from the corrupt leftist corporate media. And so they must think Republicans are fools.

I’m sure the Confederate Democrats thought they could ride it all out back in the day. Then came Gettysburg. And the South never smiled.

President Trump escalated his battle with Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, saying the Democratic leaders should be imprisoned for failing to protect ICE officers.

      Time for more popcorn.

Candidate pissed because there are follow-up questions? How often do "journalists" do this? My experience is that all candidates - from President down to local office seekers - never answer the first question. Without the rare follow-up questions, you'd never know where the candidate or politician stood. "Journalist": "But isn't your campaign ad distorting what your opponent said?" Candidate: "I'm not continuing to have this interview if you dare challenge anything I say."

Colorado's existing statute prohibits "any practice or treatment" that attempts to change a minor's "gender expressions or to eliminate or reduce sexual or romantic attraction or feelings toward individuals of the same sex."

I won't hold my breath for ENBs "Whoops! Colorado accidentally banned 'gender affirming care'!" take even though that's what the law should do both implicitly in spirit and explicitly in letter (rather than just being a completely arbitrary 'The law means whatever I say it means, because fuck you, that's why').

I love how she smugly and condescendingly just admits how rigged the system is in Ca, with a "why would I give a flying fuck what they think, I get an automatic win for being a D, idiot" and then implodes when asked the most basic of follow ups.

Remember, they love democracy, so long as they are winning the election. They love 'muh journalism' so long as a journalist doesnt have the audacity to ask even the mildest of questions.

They kind of journalism they all glorify is Obama era MSM slop journalism. Where Obama and his white house can leak information to them to run, he gives them access, they give back glowing praise, and they all get to go to the cocktail party and whitehouse correspondents dinner and yuck it up in their walled garden.

They are really unhappy this backfired trying to run cover for Biden, when they jumped the shark trying to trick the public into thinking he was alive and adept instead of a walking corpse despite their lying eyes.

The lawyer for the state of Colorado was awful. There are decades of medical studies showing conversion therapy is ineffective and dangerous. She should have focused on this. The state banning conversion therapy is no different than the state banning counselors to recommend suicide.

She also neglected to hit on the point that the minor patients are forced into therapy by their parents. The whole racket is malicious from the start.

SCOTUS is about to declare a constitutional right to abuse children. This is disgusting and offensive to anyone with a shred of humanity.

    1. NoVaNick   2 months ago

Up until the 1970s, conversion therapy for gay teens was electroshock (Lou Reed had this done to him). This was also the conversion therapy for trans teens until fairly recently. I suspect that counseling a kid now whose family or themself might be uncomfortable with their sexuality or gender is a bit different despite what the left would like you to believe.

      1. mad.casual   2 months ago

This is a categorically retarded, dishonest retcon. It's like saying "Up until the 1970s the primary means for automechanics to treat leaded emissions from a three-cylinder engine was to forcibly add fuel injection and this was also therapy for rotary engines until fairly recently."

Straight (or non-sexual) women were electroshocked and even lobotomized more often than homosexual men and, frequently and anecdotally even in Lou Reed's case, the treated gay men (and women) were treated for other psychological reasons and homosexuality or sexual deviance was just incidental (if it was even known to the patient at the time). To wit, Lou Reed had a mental breakdown of his own accord and was, nominally, treated for that while, e.g., Rosemary Kennedy likely had an intellectual disability and was electroshocked *and* lobotomized for that.

Why do you hate straight, gay, trans, the otherwise mentally infirm or unstable, the medical community then and now, the intervening progress between then and now, the people who lived then, ... everyone... to torture them with such dishonest horseshit?

      2. Mike Parsons   2 months ago

"Up until the 1970s, conversion therapy for gay teens was electroshock "

I mean...im sure there was *some* middle ground where counselors or religious figures just said "stop fucking dudes, god doesnt like it", I am pretty sure you are building up a little bit of a strawman with a statement that extreme.

    2. Uilleam   2 months ago

"The state banning conversion therapy is no different than the state banning counselors to recommend suicide."

I'm really glad that you're not part of the decision making process.

"SCOTUS is about to declare a constitutional right to abuse children. This is disgusting and offensive to anyone with a shred of humanity."

No offense...actually, offense, but we wont be taking advice on child abuse from the retards who were arguing 5 minutes ago for drag queen lap dances, raunchy sex stuff in front of children, including sexual material in curricula for children as young as Kindergarten, encouraging explicit sex material for middle school age and younger children (Gender Queer), and have pushed for castrating hormones to be administered to confused children.

You can fuck right out of the conversation and let the adults talk, but we suffered the worst and most disgusting opinions from degenerates like you, and now you can go sit in the time out chair while the rest of sane society decides how we will deal with kids, without your input.

And if there is a problem with that, we can just settle it the way people historically dealt with people that fuck with kids.

    Babylon Bee:

    https://babylonbee.com/news/chicago-mayor-hoping-their-ice-free-zones-work-better-than-their-gun-free-zones

CHICAGO, IL — As the city seeks to push back against President Donald Trump's efforts to enforce immigration law, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson told his aides that he hoped their "ICE-Free Zones" would work a lot better than their "Gun-Free Zones."

With Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker adamantly opposing any ICE operations to apprehend illegal aliens, the leaders were cautiously optimistic that setting up zones to prevent immigration enforcement would turn out better than the zones they set up to keep people from being brutally shot to death.

"Maybe this method will work this time," Johnson was heard telling his staff. "I mean, it felt like a good idea to set up those ‘Gun-Free Zones,' but people just keep on shooting folks every day for some reason. It doesn't matter how many signs we put up. But maybe… just maybe… if we put up enough signage to let everyone know that there are ‘ICE-Free Zones' in our city, it'll totally work. Let's stay positive, people. Signs can work. Just not for guns, apparently."

The Windy City has become Ground Zero for the heated immigration debate, with Democrats contending that enforcing the law should be against the law. "Laws have no jurisdiction here," Governor Pritzker told the media on Tuesday. "Like the Second Amendment. That has no power in Illinois. That's why we established clearly marked ‘Gun-Free Zones' so law-abiding citizens can be unarmed and vulnerable to all the criminals who come to murder them. It's the same thing with ICE, but this time will be better. Are you going to eat those onion rings?"

At publishing time, 1,200 illegals had been arrested by ICE in the "ICE-Free Zones," and another 750 people had been shot to death in Chicago's "Gun-Free Zones."
