In New York, former Mid-State Corrections Officer Brandon Montanari admitted he and two colleagues kicked and punched an inmate in a hallway at the prison in April 2023, and they later tried to lie about it during the investigation. Montanari pleaded guilty to violating the inmate's rights under color of law, and his attorney requested a sentence of only probation. But a federal judge sentenced him to 37 months in federal prison, the maximum recommended by the sentencing guidelines, because she felt Montanari had not accepted responsibility. The other officers, Michael Williams and Rohail Khan, have also pleaded guilty and will be sentenced in September.

The 47-year-old inmate, James Barton, is serving a sentence of 10 years to life for his conviction in 2008 of raping two young girls over a period of several years. He impregnated one of the victims when she was 12 years old, according to parole hearing records. Barton has since been moved to a different prison.

The guards beating the shit out of you for no reason is not a standard part of prison sentences. Contrary to the belief of some people, apparently, "justice" is not a carte blanche excuse to commit unlimited acts of cruelty upon people.

Again, fix the prisons and the prison staff becomes moot. When the inmates are in the cell 24/7/365, there's no opportunity for prison staff to kick or punch them.

It's 2025. We can very easily leave the dungeon mindset of prison design and operation, and embrace a humane - dare I say even comfortable - cell that is conducive to the occupant never being allowed to leave it until his sentence is served.
