Show Patrol

Plus: Zohran Mamdani courts the "it" crowd, Mexican cartel deal, shutting down microschools, and more...

FBI and D.C. Metro Police officers in Washington, D.C. | Jemal Countess/UPI/Newscom
( Jemal Countess/UPI/Newscom)

A glorified photo op: About a dozen National Guard members took a stroll around Washington D.C.'s National Mall yesterday as the sun set. Other troops deployed around monuments elsewhere, and some could be found at a U.S. Park Police facility in Anacostia.

"We just did a presence patrol to be amongst the people, to be seen," Master Sgt. Cory Boroff told The New York Times.

But it wasn't just showmanship. Federal agents—including those with the Drug Enforcement Administration and the FBI—working in conjunction with Metropolitan Police Department officers (who have been temporarily placed under federal control) made 23 arrests on Monday night. That total, per Director Kash Patel, included "one arrest on a search warrant for a prior murder charge" and "multiple outstanding warrants for DUI." It's not totally clear how many arrests were made yesterday or if these figures are in addition to standard arrests made by D.C. cops, which have been averaging 68 arrests per day. (Also, arrests are different than convictions; these folks must still wend their way through the court system.)

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

By day yesterday, Mayor Muriel Bowser met with Attorney General Pam Bondi and other administration officials, seemingly focused on how to best partner and use the federal support. By night, Bowser was back to her critical tone, calling the president's actions an "authoritarian push" and saying in a town hall that Trump seeing homeless encampments "triggers something in him that has him believing that our very beautiful city is dirty, which it is not."

"I worry about this, because we spend a lot of time and resources trying to get the people who are in encampments into shelter, and they present with a lot of issues that make them not want to go into shelter," she continued; but White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt has been clear that homeless people may either access such services or else be "susceptible to fines or to jail time."

"We are not 700,000 scumbags and punks," Bowser said. "We don't have neighborhoods that should be bulldozed. We have to be clear about our story, who we are and what we want for our city." Bowser took to X to emphasize how "violent crime in DC is at its lowest level in 30 years."

Violent crime in DC is at its lowest level in 30 years.

We had an unacceptable spike in 2023, so we changed our laws and strategies. Now, crime levels are not only down from 2023, but from before the pandemic.

Our tactics are working, and we aren't taking our foot off the gas. pic.twitter.com/UHpCT8RDPG

— Mayor Muriel Bowser (@MayorBowser) August 12, 2025

But just two days ago, Bowser was trying to split the difference:

While Mayor Bowser calls Trump's takeover of DC police "unsettling and unprecedented," she says "the fact that we have more law enforcement and presence in neighborhoods…that may be positive."

— Philip Melanchthon Wegmann (@PhilipWegmann) August 11, 2025

And this is all a bit of a departure from Bowser's messaging, which for the last year up until a few days ago had been…a bit tougher on crime than much of the City Council's (which isn't saying all that much). But now, it's showmanship all the way down: She appears to be trying to publicly position herself as a #Resistance figure while also accepting federal help.

"But DC's crime is falling!" is a terrible response to Trump's takeover. DC's homicide rate was five times New York's last year, and we're optimistic that this year, it will fall to merely 3x. As a matter of political strategy and moral correctness, it is better to acknowledge…

— Megan McArdle (@asymmetricinfo) August 12, 2025

To some degree, Bowser and Leavitt—as well as the president himself—are conflating crime and quality-of-life issues. Is the intention, with the deployment of federal force, to get the specific carjacking crime wave under control? Or is it to curb crime more broadly? Or is it to clean up homeless encampments and make the city less dirty?

It all reminds me of the cleanup of San Francisco in advance of Xi Jinping coming to town. Prior to hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in 2023 (and a meeting between then–President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping), state and city leaders took it upon themselves to clear homeless encampments, power-wash the sidewalks, and ramp-up law enforcement, leading many San Francisco residents to wonder why Xi deserves such special treatment but they must be subjected to living in perpetual dereliction. It was all for show, but it also made the issue politically salient for a moment and proved to San Franciscans that a cleaner, better-functioning city was possible. Of course, the effects didn't really last—dealing with homelessness long-term is a lot harder than moving the homeless people temporarily out of sight—but it's possible it had a lasting political effect.

But the situation in D.C. is, in many ways, different: The real issue here is whether this is an appropriate use of executive power, and whether it will be an effective means of getting the problems under control. But it's an interesting moment because it's forcing Democratic politicians to decide whether they're going to become crime denialists or not and how exactly they want to position themselves going forward.

Scenes from New York: This is kind of a funny read (from May) because—despite being a young person in New York—I don't really know many of these names dropped who are allegedly part of the "it" crowd that endorsed Zohran Mamdani. Ella Emhoff (Kamala Harris' stepdaughter)? That's the best you can do? If this is the youthmentum, I'm not buying that it's very strong (especially without the Dimes Square set, which is more inclined to talk Curtis Yarvin than Frantz Fanon).

Relatedly: I don't have an issue with these people's ages, but I do have an issue with them coming from the Democratic Socialists of America.

Mamdani's policies were written by 28/34 yo DSAs. Few in his inner circle ever worked in government. And the person he charged to hire his city hall team is a California native.

This is who we're getting to run the top financial capital in the world and the largest school… pic.twitter.com/q3yC0fsXUj

QUICK HITS

  • "Mexico sent 26 high-ranking cartel figures to the United States Tuesday in the latest major deal with the Trump administration as American authorities ratchet up pressure on criminal networks smuggling drugs across the border," reports the Associated Press.
  • Really good Just Asking Questions episode (if I may say so myself) with Rob Henderson, the guy who popularized the phrase luxury beliefs:

  • "China Evergrande Group's delisting marks a bleak milestone for the nation's property sector, now in a fourth year of paralysis that continues to weigh down the world's second-largest economy," reports Bloomberg. "The company, once China's biggest developer by sales, will be removed from the Hong Kong stock exchange on Aug. 25, a year and a half after the shares were suspended and almost 16 years after the Guangzhou-based firm was listed."
  • "The White House plans to conduct a far-reaching review of Smithsonian museum exhibitions, materials and operations ahead of America's 250th anniversary," reports The Wall Street Journal. White House officials said they'll expect exhibits to emphasize "unity, progress, and enduring values that define the American story" and will audit accordingly.
  • What would we do without the state?

I can't imagine the horrors happening inside a private home school that violated Palo Alto city code. God forbid they were learning calculus.

Pray for these children. pic.twitter.com/Z8SkoQwmP6

Anyone who’s had an addict in their life knows from first hand experience that person has to make a dedicated decision to fight that addiction, every minute of every hour of every day, and follow through with it.

Sometimes even the ones who manage to successfully maintain sobriety have slidebacks and have to reorient themselves. That goes double for people who use nuclear-tier narcotics, especially in all these states that now view drug addiction like it's something to brag about.

Long Story Short? Charge (but not too fast)!

This electric SUV set a world record for longest journey on a single charge... here's how far it went

A new Polestar 3 Long Range Single Motor was driven 581.3 miles on UK roads, 143 miles more than a single charge should take it.

And the unmodified, large SUV's real-world journey – which took 22 hours and 57 minutes – has been officially recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Driven by professional efficiency drivers Sam Clarke, Kevin Booker and Richard Parker, the Polestar 3 - which starts from just shy of £70,000

At this point they're just fucking with the "I know an exception to the average!" people.

I have 3 drivers available now. None are "professional efficiency drivers". All of us and our gear to go anywhere we would go on vacation doesn't fit in a Polestar 3 and, even if it did, the Polestar 3 costs ~$20K more than what we've got... and would *still* add 3 days to our vacation (or take 3 days of relaxation out of our vacation).

But they have to stop to eat at some point during a 23 hour ride, presumably. So if you have to travel 600 miles in a day, this is better than training as an elite cyclist and then biking the journey.

According to LBC, the two female undercover cops were 'targeted within minutes' by a man in a large truck who 'honked at them and made gestures out the window'.

So most herd animals, large ungulates, and even many predators are repelled by such actions. There is one animal that can and does respond aggressively to honking the horn and gesturing obnoxiously.

Relatedly, if you ever hear the question "Alone in the woods with a bear or a man?", hippos and cows reliably kill more people every year than any three of lions, tigers, bears, sharks, pythons, alligators, and crocodiles combined.

We had an unacceptable spike in 2023, so we changed our laws and strategies. Now, crime levels are not only down from 2023, but from before the pandemic.

Would the strategies include different reporting thresholds by any chance?

Heck in areas of California many crimes are now only reportable online. in other words yea the police know about it but will not come out or do anything else. crime reduced, therefore Newsom is now closing prisons

Hell, you'd think SOMEBODY would be mentioning the union's allegations of superiors intentionally demanding they write out the case reports on much lower crimes.

It has been noted it defies logic for murder to be basically unchanged but "violent crime" has dropped tremendously. Makes zero sense at all.

Democrat Mayors Report Violent Crime Down 40% Since They Redefined ‘Violent’ And ‘Crime’

U.S. — Despite claims by President Donald Trump that American cities are being overrun by criminals, Democrat mayors across the country reported that violent crime was actually down 40% since they redefined the words "violent" and "crime."

Trump vowed to clean up America's streets, starting with ordering the National Guard into action to bolster law enforcement efforts in Washington, D.C., eliciting an outcry from mayors who pointed to a sharp drop in crimes now that the definition of crime had been completely changed.

"There's actually almost no crime when you look at it a certain way," said D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. "Ever since we determined that the word ‘violent' shouldn't include murders, rapes, assaults, or armed robberies and the word ‘crime' doesn't really have anything to do with committing acts that violate the law, we've seen a noticeable drop in violent crime. Trump is just trying to scare everyone into accepting his dictatorial rule."

Analysts admitted that redefining what words mean has had a significant impact on the data, with almost no homicides being committed since the definition of the word "homicide" was modified to exclude human lives taken by other humans. "Crime has virtually disappeared in parts of the country. That's going by the new definition of ‘crime,' of course."

"In fact," Mayor Bowser continued, "if acts of violent assault are called ‘loving' and breaking the law is referred to as ‘kindness,' then we've actually seen a huge spike in loving kindness in our city. So there."

At publishing time, Democrats were reportedly working on redefining the word "law" to now mean "oppressive" and the word "order" to mean "fascism."

Don't get me wrong, the cake is good, but the fact that "bear" is number 3 on the list of most interesting dead things found in a Kennedy's car cannot be topped.

No More Offshore. Startups Look to Spend and Hire in U.S. Due to Trump Tax Change
Faster deductions make adding staff cheaper when cash flow is critical, executives say

Tech startups are dusting off U.S. hiring plans after Congress revived a popular tax deduction—and the same change could drive domestic hiring more broadly as well, executives and tax professionals say.

Finta, a San Francisco-based tax-and-accounting software startup with fewer than a dozen employees, plans to fill five positions, including software engineers, in the U.S. instead of abroad by the end of the year, founder Andy Wang said. “The change makes domestic R&D far more attractive.”

        https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/u-s-stocks-rally-toward-record-highs-after-better-than-expected-inflation-data/ar-AA1KoM84

The U.S. stock market is rallying toward records on Tuesday after data suggested inflation across the country was a touch better last month than economists expected.

The S&P 500 rose 1.1% and was on track to top its all-time high set two weeks ago. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 473 points, or 1.1%, as of 2:46 p.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq composite was 1.3% higher and also heading toward a record.

Stocks got a lift from hopes that the better-than-expected inflation report will give the Federal Reserve leeway to cut interest rates at its next meeting in September.

Lower rates would give a boost to investment prices and to the economy by making it cheaper for U.S. households and businesses to borrow to buy houses, cars or equipment. President Donald Trump has angrily been calling for cuts to help the economy, often insulting the Fed's chair personally while doing so.

GE Appliances Plans $3 Billion U.S. Investment to Help Blunt Tariffs
Chinese-owned maker of refrigerators and stoves will add 1,000 jobs across five states

GE Appliances said it plans to invest $3 billion to expand and modernize its U.S. factories over the next five years, helping to blunt the effects of tariffs by reshoring some work now done in China and Mexico.

The appliance maker, owned by China-based Haier Smart Home, said the money will go into factories in South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. A previously announced project, the $490 million expansion of a washing-machine factory in the company’s home base of Louisville, Ky., is also part of the total.

If by doctrinaire you mean cosplaying democrat, sure. He plays the same role as Jeff. He couches DNC narratives in a veneer of libertarian arguments.

            This year he has backed:
Raising taxes (anti BBB using deficit argument solely built off not raising taxes)
            Against DOGE audits
            For inferior court judicial TROs
Pro open borders and their funding

Meanwhile he sea lions and only questions non leftist narratives.

A good example is the other day when he tried questioning mRNA build up in hearts. Instead tried a well actually it is more than hearts to dispute it.

He is pro funding of 60% overhead from federal grants as another example, defending the largesse multiple times. Pro USAID. Anti every cut.

                Another glaring example.

2 weeks ago he was using the same DNC gaslighting that nobody on the left was upset over the Sidney sweeny AE add.

His views are 100% consistent with democrat policies. Find me a single example of him criticizing democrats.

Which analysis do you think is incorrect? When has he supported anything under Trump or criticized anything on the left.

Same exact behaviors as shrike, jeff, sarc, and others.

They might be libertarian/libertine on a single or select few issues; the criticism of several of the editors here. Not saying “each every all” but the trend here and on the outside is that Team D and those that carry HO2 for them does not align with core little “l” principles.
One example is the murder of Ashli Babbitt. She was unarmed and civil trespassing on public property. It happened to coincide with when Otto Penn the First was being coronated. Sarc and White Mike in particular defended the LEO that shot her. There are neocons that defended that too and possibly others. They might agree with legal marijuana (though some support extra taxes and/or a govt regulatory body which isn’t libertarian imo) and say legal prostitution. But the NAP is foreign to them.

What makes them left-propagandists is noting they do not apply to the left the same principles they criticize the right for breaking. If they were in fact libertarians this would occur naturally, completely without effort. But in reality they ignore, minimize, and defend the left's failures while inventing, exaggerating, and catastrophizing the right's failures.

For example when The 1619 Project dropped all of their comments defended it, attacking anyone who criticized it or it's creators.

In reality jeffsarc are left wingers criticizing their enemies from a libertarian perspective because this is a libertarian site. But they obviously don't believe the principles they use to do so.

Would respect the more if they were honest about their actions.

Most of us they, yes this includes Qb, call Trump cultists have criticized Trump many times but are also honest that we dislike almost everything the DNC stands for. Sarc and Mike will never admit they have biases. Hence the cosplay term.

It's odd this group (Zeb, QB) accepts without objection the jeffsarc framing of you and others as Trumpists which presumably means not-libertarian. But somehow when the same analysis is used to characterize jeffsarc as not libertarian they frame the entire process as illegitimate.

Why the difference? Left Wing Privilege. Because virtually all of us come of age in institutions committed to advancing left wing extremism they internalize that perfect evidence is necessary to even mildly criticize the left. By contrast it's open season on you since you're just a fascist who needs to be driven out By Any Means Necessary.

I will engage with anyone here on the merits of what they are saying. Mostly I will stay out of the personal crap, but I guess today is an exception. I don't know if I've ever called anyone a "Trumpist", but if I have, it's not (generally) a dismissal of them. I'm not an anti-Trumpist. I like a lot of what he's done. Anyone can see that some people on here are strong Trump supporters and some are less so. That doesn't mean they (either way) are necessarily not libertarian or that I have a big problem with that. I have actual friends who are pretty optimistic about Trump and I will argue, but I don't hold it against them. SO please don't assume you know my motivations. In this comment section, I'm generally just interested in debate, humor and hearing differing views from those on here who I consider worth listening to (and if I respond to you in any substantive way, then you are part of that group, even if I often disagree).

Jesse and I not getting along goes way back and has nothing to do with Sarc or Jeff, both of whom have always been friendly to me. There's quite a few Trump supporters here that have always been nice to me as well.

As for me, I'm sure there's a few here I've call Trumpists. Is that an insult? All of my friends and family are Trump supporters (none claim to be libertarians) and I have no animosity toward Trump supporters. I was excited when Trump was elected over Kamala anticipating all the good things like gutting the deep state and thinking the tariffs would be limited similar to Trump 1.0, but it has been seriously disappointing.

                    4. Marshal   7 hours ago

I'm sure there's a few here I've call Trumpists. Is that an insult?

This is irrelevant. First "insult" isn't the right term. Is being called a leftist an "insult"?

But I didn't claim you called him a Trumpist so your meaning isn't relevant. I claimed you didn't object when sarc did and sarc clearly sees this as a damning label. This parallels the fact that I see being a leftist (with all the obviously wrong beliefs that entails) as damning.

So why are you motivated to protect sarc from this label when sarc freely labels others? It makes even less sense to respond that labeling someone a Trumpist isn't a big deal because then the justification to protect sarc means even less.

For example when The 1619 Project dropped all of their comments defended it, attacking anyone who criticized it or it's creators.

Well that's a fucking lie. I never once defended that. It was bullshit from the get-go. You need to quote me defending it (which you can't because no such comments exist) or apologize for being a piece of shit liar (which you can't because you're pathological).

You really are human garbage. I pity your family and coworkers. I'd say I pity your friends too but you don't have any.

Notice the difference in demands. When sarc lied that I defended tariffs he claimed it was idiotically unreasonable to expect a quote or reference. But when he's criticized a quote or reference is perfectly reasonable. This happens because sarc has no standards, if you are on his team nothing is wrong and if you're not nothing is correct. That's the entire extent of his analysis.

                      You really are human garbage.

Compare how he treats others to how he criticizes others for treating him. People mock him with "Ideas" because he pretends to want to discuss them. But he's always engaged in personal attacks and schoolyard insults to everyone else because the implied standard of sticking to ideas is a cudgel to criticize others, never a universal principle applied to himself or his allies.

Wait now. Who are you trying to say supported the 1619 project?

All I'm seeing here is a lot of commenters that have a lot of other commenters jumbled up in their memory and attributing positions to them they've never held.

I have frequently criticized the left, especially Biden and Obama. Those comments get no attention and are quickly forgotten. It's only when someone gets critical of the right, especially Trump that things heat up and that's all that goes in the memory banks.

Then we have Jesse routinely lying about things people like me have said. How many people here really think I'm Mike because of him? I'm not. Jesse knows it. He knows my real identity.

Who are you trying to say supported the 1619 project?

That was Jeff, although as I said both of them defend the left by attacking anyone criticizing them. He would never give the game away by coming out fully in support, his contribution is as a protector. But he called anyone criticizing it a racist and lied about it it as much as he could without permanently damaging his credibility. I think he misjudged that last bit, it's hard to understand how people think outside a bubble you're inside.

All I'm seeing here is a lot of commenters that have a lot of other commenters jumbled up in their memory

That's why we mockingly call them jeffsarc. There's no real difference between people playing the same role. One may choose to engage more on a particular issue or even be busy that day. But abstracted one level they perform the same function across the entire set of political issues. You'll also notice they literally never criticize each other's ideas or even other Team Blue members like Molly. This is revealing because when pressed they will advance generic criticisms of the left, but somehow these never come up when unabashed leftists make them. In hundreds of thousands of comments each neither has ever made one none which conflicts with this framework.

The key is recognizing the flip. For example sarc hates cops and interprets every action as hostile to them as possible, except when one kills a protester on the right. Then the cop's a hero. Similarly he asserts people who cheer death (referring to Palestinians) are garbage humans, except when he does it. He hates whataboutism, except when it was his prime tactic to defend Dem spending during the Obama and Biden administrations. He claims those who engage in personal attacks are garbage humans, but he's made them for decades and doesn't seem to think they reflect on him at all.

Every standard flips perfectly consistently with who it would justify criticizing.

                    Classic Liberalism?

I have argued ad nauseam against tariffs. I favor free markets. I'm a pro 2A gun owner. I oppose labor unions, government subsidies, Obamacare, lockdowns, mask mandates and censorship. I'm a free speech absolutist and nearly always side with individuals over the state including self defense and the castle doctrine. I am a constitutional originalist. I'm anti-war. I'm anti-drugwar and opposed to laws against victimless crimes. I oppose using soldiers as police and the militarization of police. I am a very vocal supporter of the 4th amendment, jury nullification and perhaps most of all limiting the power of the imperial presidency which I think will be the end of our republic.

I've been a Ron Paul libertarian since about 2000.

And yes, I hate Donald Trump, not for who he is, but for what he is.

If you're a leftist how can you turn libertarians against the right? If you're honest you have to admit you don't support any of the principles libertarians care about either.

I guess if they think they can get that 3% for democrats that could make sense. Still seems like a weak strategy. Convincing libertarians of anything en-masse is like herding cats and no one knows what the fuck we're talking about anyway.

I asked in which manner because I see none of it. The base of all his arguments are in democrat narratives with a veneer of classical liberalism, done primarily by dismissing any parts of the argument that mar the veneer.

For example, how is defending fed funded grants woth 60% overhead classically liberal?

How is defending the government response to covid as recently as last week classically liberal?

Even on tariffs and the economy he only claims no tariffs but as soon as you show him tariffs from other countries he shrugs his shoulders as no big deal, again not classically liberal. As the argument is solely one sided against one actor, the US.

How is being against all audits, supporting judicial supremacy, etc classically liberal?

So provide me an example of a pure classical liberal argument he had made.

For example, how is defending fed funded grants woth 60% overhead classically liberal?

I never did. I said even those of us funded by NIH grants complain about the 60% overhead.

How is defending the government response to covid as recently as last week classically liberal?

I never did. I was pointing out flaws in a study on vaccines because it was a crappy study. There was no defense of COVID policies, just trying to keep you honest.

Even on tariffs and the economy he only claims no tariffs but as soon as you show him tariffs from other countries he shrugs his shoulders as no big deal, again not classically liberal. As the argument is solely one sided against one actor, the US.

That's 100% classic liberal as all the Austrian economists favor not responding to foreign tariffs by punishing your own citizens.

How is being against all audits

                      What audits?

                      supporting judicial supremacy

I don't support judicial supremacy, I support balanced checks and balances and think the presidency; Bush, Obama, Trump or Biden is too powerful for balance and ever growing moreso.

              This year he has backed:
Raising taxes (anti BBB using deficit argument solely built off not raising taxes) I never said this. I favor the income tax cuts, but oppose the budget increases

Against DOGE audits No. I favored DOGE audits, though I did criticize some of the tactics used.

For inferior court judicial TROs Partly correct. This is case by case for me. Sometimes TRO's are appropriate to reign in government overreach

Pro open borders and their funding No. This is wrong. I acknowledge the government's role in controlling immigration to prevent a cultural takeover. Otherwise, I think immigrants should be free to come here to work with no welfare or assistance, but since that's not a realistic possibility I think limiting immigration is necessary. I do oppose mass deportations of non-criminal immigrants.

I don't. I subscribe to "innocent until proven guilty."

Nice dodge. As an example the guy just found guilty of murdering the woman in Bel Air MD was previously found guilty of murder in his native country long before he came here. But because we had effectively open borders during this time we let him in anyway. So your plan is to let people like this stay even though they've been convicted.

The only way to keep out convicted criminals is to scrutinize them as part of the immigration process. Illegal immigration cannot screen for anything, and anyone who supports it or allowing the people who came this way to stay cannot reasonably claim to support keeping out either criminals or illegal aliens with any other disqualifying attribute. This shows people who make this claim aren't serious about it, they're just using it to deflect criticism but their real position is "everyone stays even the criminals".

                    2. Quicktown Brix   7 hours ago

There are risks in life. Freedom is always a tradoff. There are murderers in the country. There are murder preventers in the country. There are potential murder victims in the country. Should deport everyone to make sure we got all the murderers? We have thousands of murderers in the country and deporting an entire class of people hardly seems like a practical solution. It's identity politics in the extreme. Drawing the line at illegal immigrants seems arbitrary.

But, ideally part of allowing people to stay would be having people volunteer for a greencard with vetting. If you don’t want to be vetted, get deported.

                    3. Marshal   6 hours ago

Drawing the line at illegal immigrants seems arbitrary.

That's the group that should have been screened but wasn't. There's nothing arbitrary about that.

                      Another dodge.

It's identity politics in the extreme.

It's not identity politics at all, except in the sense that left wingers claim anything involved with immigration is identity politics which in their mind delegitimizes anything it's tied to.

As many as are here now that Trump shut off the spigot. Cut off the aid and let them decide to stay or leave.

I prefer to be around people like myself and I do sense the strain of a large proportion of immigrants, but not enough to force foreigners to uproot their lives if they're established here.

And I credit Trump with the fact that I can say that publicly without risk of major repercussions now.

That's the same deal Reagan made in 1986. Somehow the border remained open until 2025, and will be open again the next time the Dems win an election. The spigot can never be turned off.

You're right. There is no feasible classic liberal solution in today's political climate. When it comes to what I consider inhumane treatment of mass deportation of settled immigrants by deporting them or letting them stay and taxing citizens for immigrants' welfare, I err to the side of letting them stay, but advocate for cutting off aid.

Do you think a classic liberal must side with mass deportations in this scenario?

Hostility is too strong a word. I do think he can become quite disingenuous with his arguments when information starts to contradict his priors. And he does frame many topics from accepted leftist establishment perspectives. See yesterday: freaking out about Trump’s “unprecedented” actions in DC.

Basically, he’s what Michael Malice refers to as a midwit:

            Concept of "Midwit"
The term "midwit" refers to individuals with above-average intelligence who may struggle with critical thinking or decision-making. Malice has discussed this concept, suggesting that midwits often regurgitate popular opinions without independent thought. This phenomenon is linked to the Dunning-Kruger effect, where individuals overestimate their knowledge or abilities.
            Key Points about Midwits
Characteristics: Often lack deep understanding despite having intelligence.
Impact: Can lead to poor decision-making in societal contexts.
Cultural Commentary: Malice critiques the tendency of midwits to conform to mainstream narratives.
Michael Malice's exploration of these themes highlights the importance of independent thought in a media-saturated environment.

Thanks to the Smithsonian black museum I learned that the blacks don't work hard, don't care about their kids, are culturally disrespectful of all people, incapable of being on time, and incapable of taking care of themselves!

Why get rid of this noble institution?

      https://www.newsweek.com/smithsonian-race-guidelines-rational-thinking-hard-work-are-white-values-1518333

In the section, Smithsonian declares that "objective, rational, linear thinking," "quantitative emphasis," "hard work before play," and various other values are aspects and assumptions of whiteness.

The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture had no comment for Newsweek. They referred to the website's page titled "Whiteness" when asked for additional comment. The graphic was later removed from the page.

"White dominant culture, or whiteness, refers to the ways white people and their traditions, attitudes, and ways of life have been normalized over tiem and are now considered standard practices in the United States," the introduction to the section reads. "And since white people still hold most of the institutuional power in America, we have all internalized some aspects of white culture— including people of color."

Another section says that white values include "steak and potatoes: 'bland is best'" and that white people have "no tolerance for deviation from a single god concept."

Other subsections deal with "family structure," "rugged individualism," "Protestant work ethic" and "aesthetics."

Portland logic - making everything about Trump. I think this is better than saying TDS.

IMO, making everything about Trump and TDS are two different things.

Portland was already pretty batshit crazy to begin with. TDS is when you have people who, for 20 yrs., have been saying "Above all else, we need a political outsider, someone who isn't a career politician, who won't start another war, who will challenge longstanding status quo and bring radical change to our government, and take on the money-laundering interventionist MIC." who turn right around on virtually every principle because the dude overfed some goldfish (or didn't) or because he enjoys grabbing women by the pussy (if they let him).

Maybe those people were just cosplaying all along, but otherwise from the outside perspective, it's a genuine "After [the stroke or the concussion or they removed the tumor] it's like they're a completely different person." Like, did you really not know Donald Trump was a poon hound? You remember we agreed that the issue with Clinton was the perjury and/or his authority rather than the fact that he got a blowjob by someone other than his wife, right?

I'm watching Mr. Robot now and it feels like the same thing. The scene from Fight Club where Robert Paulson is dead and Ed Norton screams at them "You morons! You're running around in ski masks trying to blow things up ! What did you *think* was going to happen?" Like nobody ever realizes that the hard part of blowing shit up and rebuilding in the rubble is the rebuilding in the rubble.

Yeah, but that guy violated your personal property. The entire country isn't collective property. Some people want the illegals on their property, some don't. So I'd say it's still a poor analogy and definitely not literally correct to call illegals "trespassers". Trespassing has a specific legal meaning.

According to a Tuesday analysis of Current Population Survey data from the Center for Immigration Studies, the total "foreign-born population of all ages, both in and out of the labor force" decreased by an "unprecedented" 2.2 million during the first seven months of the year.

The falloff in the "total foreign-born" population was entirely comprised of non-citizens, as the number of naturalized U.S. citizens has "actually increased some since January," per the analysis.

Trump is cracking down on crime to distract from Epstein!!!

In reality judges are blocking the release of the files that exist.

    https://legalinsurrection.com/2025/08/judge-denies-doj-request-to-unseal-ghislaine-maxwell-grand-jury-documents/

Ironically the judge blocked ghe release because he thought trump would use the release as a distraction from other issues.

There's still a whole faction of the cuckservative right, mostly in the Dispatch/Jonah Goldberg crowd, that delusionally believe this. The ones who really were in it only for the grift, such as the Lincoln Pedo Project or Kristol faction, already changed their party alignment to the Democrats.

These are the ones who really think that having Ideas and Getting Things Done are viable political policies, even when the results are absolute drizzling shit and enabled the advance of radical cultural leftism, while completely failing to cut back anything they complained about.

Yeah, that is the real danger everyone seems to be ignoring (especially in the 'the dems didn't learn anything' narrative on the right). We've hit the point in the cycle where the majority of the populace believes the system is broken so it is moving to a battle between populist right and populist left. Whichever can bring the perception of 'real change' to market first will win all the marbles.

A big reason the Democrats ended up dominating most of the 20th century political landscape is because they seized the populist energy that Theodore Roosevelt had recognized and tried to harness, and for the most part delivered on the things they said they were going to do when in power. Republicans became completely buck-broken by FDR winning four terms, and only had very brief periods of any dynamic pushback against the Dems.

The most notable rebukes were the 1972 election, because of the New Left's aggressively retarded political violence, and the 1994 congressional wipeout when the party was essentially being led by Gingrich and influenced by Limbaugh's shit-talking.

The press were so furious about the former that they mounted an informational psyop with the help of a disgruntled, petty bureaucrat to force Nixon to resign, even though he didn't do anything different in substance than Johnson and Kennedy had before him. Gingrich was energetic and charismatic enough to actually force Clinton into rolling back quite a bit of New Deal programs, although they both lucked into being in charge during a time when the country was in the first stages of a tech revolution that benefitted the economy at the time. Where Gingrich and the GOP fucked up during that period was not realizing that Bill Clinton was popular and most people really didn't give a shit about his tomcatting; if they had, he never would have been nominated in the first place. If they'd ignored Bill being a pussy hound and focused exclusively on getting Hillary, they might have actually had some success in nerfing their influence, because unlike Bill, Hillary was not popular at all and everyone could see what a viscous, entitled powermonger she really was.

This is a big reason the Epstein stuff is dying as a Democrat catspaw, and I say this as someone who's irritated about the fact that Patel, Bongino, and Bondi were talking all this shit and then blue-balled everyone.

It's not just the fact that no one in the DoJ leaked anything related to Trump from 2016-2024, which has been the glowies' entire MO during that period. It's that Democrats are actively trying to block anything from actually being released in the first place. So there either really is nothing there, and the Dems are terrified that releasing this shit will confirm it, or it implicates some very powerful people not named Trump, and no one wants to toss that grenade out on the table.

My personal belief is that it’s the latter, it implicates important people not named Trump. If there was any serious dirt on Trump in the Epstein files, the Democrats would’ve used them over the last eight years.

One was pregnant, while another said she was hoping to get benefits to support her two children.

Schiff would be the ideal test case for pre-emptive pardons.
Arrest him, try him, convict him; then say "oh, wait, he has a pardon, we have to let him go, but the conviction stands".
In the real world, a pardon is only after a conviction, and only for that one thing.

BREAKING: City-run grocery in Kansas City shuts down due to rampant theft, barren shelves

The city spent $18M to keep it open

    From DataRepublican in that thread:

From what I’ve gathered, the store had trouble because:

    - It was in a high-crime area, which drove shoppers away.
    - Running a grocery store takes a surprisingly complex infrastructure.... accurately predicting demand, managing surpluses, and keeping key items in stock. They couldn't just build that from scratch, so they often had too much of the wrong things and not enough of the essentials.
    - Many suppliers require minimum order sizes. With low sales, they couldn’t meet those minimums, making it even harder to keep shelves stocked.

And so they entered a "death spiral"

Expect the same from Zohran the Unmagnificent.

    https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/dc-police-commander-suspended-crime-statistics/3959566/

A D.C. police commander is under investigation for allegedly making changes to crime statistics in his district.

The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed Michael Pulliam was placed on paid administrative leave in mid-May. That happened just a week after Pulliam filed an equal employment opportunity complaint against an assistant chief and the police union accused the department of deliberately falsifying crime data, according to three law enforcement sources familiar with the complaint.

The union claims police supervisors in the department manipulate crime data to make it appear violent crime has fallen considerably compared to last year.

Democratic Socialists having some issues with progressive intersectionality...

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/democratic-socialism-so-white-opinion/ar-AA1Kn0GW

And here lies Democrats' biggest challenge to selling democratic socialism to voters—especially the party's scorned and thinning racial minority base. Racial minority voters are more risk-averse in their voting behavior than white voters, and Democrats, including Mamdani, simply haven't given them strong reasons to believe in democratic socialism. Yet.

As an alternative to free-market capitalism, democratic socialism has long struggled with branding, often perceived as utopian or overly redistributive in nature. But democratic socialism also suffers from a deeper representational problem. Rallies and social media feeds tend to present its most vocal supporters as white urban millennials, upper-crust Gen Zers, and "Bernie Bros," those who ironically would seem to have both the least to gain and least to lose from aligning with democratic socialism.

Opponents peg democratic socialism as a radical, bohemian ideology that could push the U.S. toward authoritarianism, pointing to socialist governments (sans the "democratic" part) in countries like Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. Proponents romanticize democratic socialism, envisaging Nordic countries like Denmark and Sweden where worker-led economies and strong safety nets reign. Nordic countries though are small, culturally monolithic, and overwhelmingly white, raising real questions about whether democratic socialism could flourish in a large, racially and culturally diverse country like the U.S.

It's like I've said many times in the past, Scandanvian socialism worked because it was run in countries dominated by Scandanavian socialists. And even then, they've had to moderate that with mixed programs because the money to pay for their "free" shit has to come from somewhere. But it chugged along at a small scale because these were high-trust societies.

Now that these nations are being overrun by sub-80 IQ African and Middle Eastern retards, those programs are going to start falling apart as their high-trust societies transform into low-trust societies. That's why Denmark is particularly insistent on making immigrants assimilate into Danish culture and kicking out the ones who can't hack it, instead of balkanizing immigrants into various ghettos where they aren't forced to become Danish in mindset.

arrests are different from convictions. These folks still need to wend their way through the judicial system

According to King Rothbard of the Mises Caucus, the proper libertarian function of cops is to administer instant punishment. Subject of course to liability if they make erroneous decisions.

Which means convictions are neither necessary nor wise. The cops already executed those criminals upon arrest. That's what instant punishment means. Since the skies did not open up and suck the cops into Valhalla or Hell or wherever erroneous cops go for liability, it is clear that the arrests and executions were valid due process and those executed will now have their accusations registered as convictions.

    https://www.the-sun.com/news/14963026/neighbour-finds-decapitated-head-spike-murder/

A NEIGHBOUR has revealed the horror moment he found a pregnant woman dead and her decapitated husband's head stuck to a spike.

Athena Georgopoulos, 39, was killed alongside her 50-year-old partner Andrew Gunn as cops found chilling graffiti scrawled outside their property.

"Democratic politicians to decide whether they're going to become crime denialists or not"

Excellent quote. But I'd say their "STEAL from those 'icky' people and call it charity" pretty much already determined that that decision has already been made.

"...Of course, it shouldn’t surprise anyone to see Trump portraying a majority-minority city as a haven of crime and thuggery. He did the same in Los Angeles, where he dispatched the National Guard in June to terrorize the city’s mayor — his long-time political foe Karen Bass. Now Trump is hinting at expanding his deployments to Chicago and New York, two more Democratic cities with Black mayors and large minority populations.
    Are you noticing a pattern?..."

Fascism! We all now know that cutting off government funding to NGOs is fascism, plain and simple, and probably racist as well. Not to mention that PEOPLE WILL DIE!

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/s-f-nonprofit-embroiled-in-dream-keeper-scandal-warns-of-complete-shutdown/ar-AA1Kp0GF

San Francisco's efforts to cut off a nonprofit from city funding for allegedly bribing a former city official is threatening the future of the organization's programs for needy kids and their families in the Western Addition.

Attorneys for Collective Impact, the nonprofit embroiled in a scandal over its close ties to former San Francisco Human Rights Commission Executive Director Sheryl Davis, said in a legal filing Monday that the organization "anticipates a complete shutdown of its programs by October."

The attorneys were arguing against an attempt by City Attorney David Chiu to prohibit Collective Impact from receiving city funding for five years.

Chiu is seeking to debar Collective Impact after a joint investigation by his office and the controller found that the nonprofit had spent thousands on college tuition for Davis' son, paid for Davis to upgrade her flights to first class and covered costs related to her personal ventures - all while receiving millions from her department.

If your nonprofit can only survive through government money . . . then maybe you shouldn't be in business?

Isn't that what they said about companies that could afford a minimum wage hike?

I don't understand the outrage here. There have always been male cheerleaders? They're not pretending to be women. What a nontroversy.

Read for yourself and bring a barf bag. Has Robby ever seen actual male cheerleaders or an NFL game?

Usually there are a few male cheerleaders in a squad just to be there to throw the women cheerleaders up in the air and catch them and then maybe do some back flips or whatever. These guys look like they'll be joining in on the normal routines the women do. People like Robby appear to be trying to blur the line there. Do you think George W Bush was swinging his hips around and flipping his hair back and forth? Probably not.

Anyway, here's a video of these two zesty boys dancing with a bunch of hot ladies - https://x.com/Theonlyjcvolly/status/1954925068192002358

Same shit they do with drag shows.

Music Hall and comedy use crossdressing therefore highly sexualized adult drag shows are just the same thing and so its entirely appropriate to bring - nay *necessary* - your children too.

It's straight up Law of Salutory Contradiction.

They are *not* pretending to be women but when they dance like all the female cheerleaders do they are killing it!

Once again, two cowboys want to sleep in the same sleeping bag in the mountains on a cattle drive, buy a ranch that they live together on, whatever, not my business. It's the "Shut up little kid. Of course the Empreror is dressed like a man." that makes me want to tear someone's arm off and beat them to death with it.

In Europe and Japan they have mostly male cheerleaders in the literal sense of the word.
Guys with megaphones and drums who lead the fans in aggressive chants. Most are middle aged and definitely not good to look at.

Robby's OK. I just won't ask his advice on anything particularly masculine.
Why the outrage seems fairly obvious, though. Most people who appreciate the cheerleaders aren't interested in looking at some fruity looking dudes prancing around. I'm sure there are loads of gay NFL fans, but I don't think it's quite enough to justify making the spectacle gayer.

It would take some effort. Guys crammed into spandex, wearing bright colors. And they line up in front of other guys crammed into spandex wearing other bright colors. Then this one guy gets right behind other guy and puts his hands between that guy’s legs. Then he says something and they all run around chasing after the guy with the leather purse. Grabbing, sweating, grunting, more grabbing until one of them jumps on top of the guy with the purse. Then this guy wearing a third costume runs in blowing a whistle. He’ll do a pirouette. Occasionally, he’ll toss a brightly colored handkerchief. Rinse. Repeat. It has a certain homoerotic flair to it. The self propelled stomachs like it.

Why the outrage seems fairly obvious, though.

You mean the dishonesty or the fact that less than "two weeks" after stories about immigrants trying to lure little boys off of playgrounds or Abercrombie and Fitch CEOs luring minor models into sex with jobs or other gay couples raping their adoptive kids Robby tries to pull this "They're not pretending to be women." bullshit? Like he honestly thinks that there would be no problem with Lia Thomas competing in women's swimming as long as he changed in the men's locker room and wore a speedo.

He's not reporting or reacting in good faith, not trying to be honest and understand things in a manner you or anyone else would understand things to achieve any sort of best or mutually beneficial outcome. He's trying to be just honest enough that you'll believe him and/or give him what he wants.

Again, this is the guy who "to be sure"d the gay elements of an artistic depiction of 5 guys stripped, beaten, stabbed, and killed in a graveyard by Union thugs.

There have always been male cheerleaders? They're not pretending to be women.

The assertion that these men aren't pretending to be women is a lie. They just aren't trying hard enough for Robby to find it offensively dishonest.

Once again, the problem with the LGBTQIA community didn't suddenly spring up with the TQs. There is no community, it's always been an activism campaign around "2 men = 1 man + 1 woman" and the TQs were there from the beginning. Now that the TQs are a conspicuous liability (if not a lesser or less sinister threat), Robby is trying to explain how "2 men = 1 man + 1 woman" is correct when two gay guys say it but is wrong when a trans person says "If 2 men = 1 man + 1 woman then 1 woman = 1 man."

They don't care about honesty or objectivity or logic or biology, it's all about forcing other people to bend the knee. For over 50 yrs. it's been about forcing people to bend the knee.

    >To some degree, Bowser and Leavitt—as well as the president himself—are conflating crime and quality-of-life issues.

Wolfe! Crime is a quality of life issue for those that experience it.

Is that the problem? All these 'empathetic' people can't actually understand the damage to other people's quality of life when they're subject to crime and live in fear?

    > Is the intention, with the deployment of federal force, to get the specific carjacking crime wave under control? Or is it to curb crime more broadly? Or is it to clean up homeless encampments and make the city less dirty?

HOMELESS ENCAMPMENTS ARE NEXII FOR CRIME! FFS, if you have 9 homeless criminals and one harmless homeless guy in a park you people would use the one guy to demand all 10 be left alone - you try to weaponize empathy in order to make yourself feel better at the expense of people who are being victimized.

You protect victimizers by doing this.

And the defense of the homeless encampments is even more misguided (assuming they actually care about the people), as the people living there are victimized relentlessly by the criminals among them.
