Policer officer standing in front of Blackstone office | IMAGO/Political-Moments/Newscom
( IMAGO/Political-Moments/Newscom)

What exactly is Blackstone's crime? "She made $9,000 a minute," wrote one Twitter user of Wesley LePatner, chief executive officer of Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust, who was killed in the Midtown Manhattan office shooting on Monday. "For most a lump sum of 9k would be life changing and she made it per minute. She was chief executive of Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust and her sole job was making sure housing is expensive and that we all rent for the rest of our lives. Rest in piss."

LePatner leaves behind young children and a husband, and has posthumously been mighty venerated by colleagues and friends. So it's no shock that someone so high-performing, who worked for Blackstone, is the most threatening type of person to leftists on Twitter, mocked even after death.

— Gwen ????️‍⚧️ ????️ (@CastleCrumblng) July 30, 2025

The basic facts of the leftist critique are comically wrong: A 40-hour workweek (which no Blackstone executive works) contains 2,400 minutes. If she's compensated at $9,000 a minute, and she works for an entire year, she makes $1,123,200,000 annually. This would be more than Blackstone's CEO makes, as well as other top executives, so it is implausible. But, perhaps more to the point, her "sole job" was not "making sure housing is expensive" and that people "rent for the rest of [their] lives." The far left loves a one-dimensional villain, but I'm not sure they love the world that would come after all their favorite villains are vanquished and industries like real estate, healthcare, and investment banking cease to exist.

They seem to want a regression to the Dark Ages: an unsophisticated economy with no landlords, no insurers, no complex markets. They see complexity in the economy, the reason for which is beyond their comprehension, as parasitic.

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

Online leftists misunderstand the root of our housing woes, believing that Blackstone is a major reason why their rent prices are high. Is it "big homebuilders withhold[ing] housing supply" (as antitrust guy Matt Stoller claims)? Is it both "big homebuilders and private equity [who] made American cities unaffordable" (as antitruster Basel Musharbash claims)? Is it Blackstone's Real Estate Income Trust that gave "individual investors a chance to own a piece of apartment buildings, warehouses, data centers and other types of commercial real estate," per The Wall Street Journal—"one of Blackstone's most successful products ever…boast[ing] over $70 billion in net asset value"?

"I tracked down a complete listing of the country's 50 largest homebuilding markets, from #1 Dallas to #50 Cincinnati," writes Derek Thompson on his Substack, tearing apart Musharbash's claim that big homebuilders function as oligopolies in American cities, withholding housing supply and conspiring to make things more expensive. "How many meet Quintero's first oligopoly threshold (two companies = 90 percent of the market)? Zero out of 50. And how many meet his second threshold (six companies = 90 percent of the market)? One." It's a fundamentally silly and untrue claim with no evidence to bolster it.

As for the question of whether all the rental real estate has been gobbled up by Blackstone and its competitors operating similar businesses, you have a bit of trickery when it comes to defining what exactly counts as an "institutional buyer." The National Association of Realtors defines them as "companies, corporations, or limited liability companies (LLCs)" that own property—the only issue is, lots of small-time landlords form LLCs, so that's not exactly a good way to measure it. Are iBuyers that make cash offers on homes considered institutional buyers? And what exactly is the level of concentrated ownership that becomes a problem for leftists? "The Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust currently has an ownership interest in at least 274,859 rental housing units," per CNBC. That's a little less than 1 percent of the country's 46 million housing units. But more fundamentally: Doesn't it make sense for landlords to own multiple properties—if it is, y'know, their business? Do we support specialization or not? And should institutional investors be allowed to invest in real estate at all? What exactly happens when a bunch of capital exits the real estate market? Yelling about Blackstone online doesn't do much to solve housing supply issues, which are primarily related to city-level zoning laws and all the little regulations piled atop that drive the cost of building up—and old conventions that were outlawed.

There's also what we could term the "rest in piss" problem: Far-left political discourse seems to revel in killing. They celebrate when someone who works in a disfavored industry gets murdered in cold blood.

"This sweet angel was the CEO of the Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust (BREIT), responsible for taking over $48 billion dollars of residential housing off the market and renting, specifically targeting areas with high immigration rates so they have Section 8 to rent," wrote another user, sarcastically. Top reply: "Crazy how the people doing bad stuff all have addresses." This is the specialty of the e-leftist: insinuate you're going to engage in political violence, but maintain a veneer of plausible deniability.

We're living in the Luigi era: Killers are celebrated as folk heroes by far-leftists who don't have any idea how the market actually works, who hide behind the safety of their keyboards.

Scenes from New York: It's fine to increase bus and subway fares, but I have an incredible idea for how to up the revenue: We could punish the millions of fare-evaders who routinely hop the turnstile.

QUICK HITS

  • Kamala Harris has made possibly the first good decision of her life and chosen not to run for governor of California.

Last year an armed and drunken Baltimore County councilmember holed up at his office at the mall; when the cops arrived, he told one "I will shove my Glock up your ass!" The incident got hushed up, but now @rkobell and @cadoyle_18 have the scoop. https://t.co/Z2jGK1i9Um

Newsom doesn't control the oil industry.

Six refineries closed in Trump's last year in office. One was in California. The others were in Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Wyoming, New Mexico, and North Dakota.

      1. Chumby   1 day ago

California’s cap-and-trade requirements as well as Newsom signing Abx2-1 that gives CA regulators the authority to adjust refinery inventory levels, amongst other factors, created sustainability uncertainty for Phillips and compelled them to close the facility. The announcement was two days following Gavin’s autograph of that bill.

        After the recent Valero announcement, Gas Buddy-dot-com's Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick De Haan posting on X;

It's clear that the political environment in California has been hostile to refiners, and the state badly needs to revise its mentality or face a declining number of refineries and higher prices.

It was a sentiment that was echoed by valley congressman Vince Fong.

This is something that is not created by the market, Fong asserted. This is something that is directly caused by Gavin Newsom's poor energy policies.

        https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/gas-crisis-looms-over-california-as-dems-continue-to-impose-crippling-regs/ar-AA1I23kh

Democratic policies and new regulations hiked California’s gas prices on Tuesday

Democrat policies and new regulations hiked California’s gas prices on Tuesday, and a slew of green energy initiatives has led to refinery closures and lofty gas prices in the Golden State that may soon spiral into a full-blown crisis.

California is teetering on the brink of a gas crisis due primarily to Democrats’ green energy policies, as multiple major refineries prepare to shutter in the coming years and more stringent regulations on the oil and gas industries take effect. Democratic leadership and regulators enacted adjustments to California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) program on Tuesday, resulting in a gas price increase that may be the beginning of further pain at the pump for the state’s consumers.

California has the highest tax on gasoline in the nation, and its cap-and-trade program for emissions has also been connected to high energy prices in the state. The combination of these stringent regulations and the forthcoming closures of the Phillips 66 and Valero refineries in the state could result in gas shooting up to $8 per gallon as soon as 2026, according to one study from the University of Southern California.

        https://thehill.com/policy/equilibrium-sustainability/5280032-california-fuel-refinery-closures-gas-prices-newsom/

Multiple refineries in California have recently declared their intentions to shutter operations, leaving the Golden State uncertain about future fuel supplies and impacts on prices at the pump.

Sanjay Varshney, a finance professor at California State University, Sacramento, had a different outlook on the fuel predicament, arguing that the Golden State is coping with “self-inflicted wounds.”

The higher prices at the pump, he contended, reflect California’s higher gas taxes, the state’s stricter fuel blend requirements and the lack of transportation pipelines.

Varshney said that because Newsom has both historically “used the oil industry as a punching bag” and told “them that they are basically rogues and scoundrels,” doing business right now makes for “interesting” circumstances.

“The companies are fed up, so they leave,” he added.

Illinois playing similar games, losing $63B of its tax base in one decade. Plus probably a House seat.

      https://redstate.com/wardclark/2025/07/29/outmigration-is-killing-illinois-and-democrats-cant-fix-it-n2192222

Using data from the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Census Bureau, analysts found that Illinois lost 881,012 residents from 2012 to 2022.

Economist Stephen Moore said only New York and California suffered more domestic outmigration than the Land of Lincoln.

“This is the sad story, same thing. New York and California and Illinois are just being bled to death,” Moore said.

VoteWithYourFeet.net breaks down the Census Bureau and IRS numbers from 2012 to 2022.

The data shows that Illinois was also one of the biggest losers for personal income, with a net adjusted gross income loss of $63,478,115,000 from 2012 to 2022. Only New York and California suffered heavier losses.

Illinois municipal bonds rated pretty much junk at this point.

It’s the only state in the country rated this way, although I suspect if some big tech giants decided to ditch California, combined with Zohrans NYC reign, will place California and NY in the red.

I'm loving the 2-fer double standards, people this is how it's done.

Sarc pretends to oppose whataboutism with his mockery of "Dems did it first so it's ok". But here we see he's fine with whataboutism. But also incessantly complains about people saying he holds positions he's never stated, yet here he's doing exactly that. Invoking the fantasy to justify whataboutism show you how combining his logical fallacies lead to a new level of retardedness.

The subway was privately run, and doing fine, but the shit stain politicians and their newspaper allies scared the public about possible future fare increases to justify the city taking them over. And promptly implemented the fare increases and reduced reliability. The end result is the corrupt, incompetent mess that is the MTA today.

Her sole job was to use free/subsidized money and distortions (from the Fed/govt) to drive up asset prices for existing rental housing. The investment case - from that REIT page - is the 'Structural undersupply of housing supporting long-term supply/demand fundamentals'. The goal is not to fix that undersupply. It is to aggravate it in order to goose those dysfunctional fundamental.

Liz, In your first article replace "left" and "far left" with Democrat. It will make the article more accurate. You see Socialists have to have a bogy man to blame when their policies fail. For the Nazis it was the Jews, for the Democrats it's the rich. What I find funny is that it is the rich who support the Democrats.

I’m not surprised the rich support the party that thinks they should have theirs and no one else should get. These people want serfs and servants, and to be free from responsibility, the responsibility that comes with having money and power. They’d rather shirk it off to be hedonistic instead of philanthropic.

Right - the relatively small percentage of the overall illegal population of immigrants in this country that commit crimes like this are obviously horrible; therefore, ALL illegals are exactly the same and should all be treated as such, despite the vast majority having committed no crimes except for the horrible crime of not being citizens, which according to MAGA is equally as bad as rape and murder - hence the "git rid of 'em all!!" mob.

We also know, thanks to your trenchant analysis, that US Citizens committing these exact same crimes, while bad, just aren't as bad, you know, because it's red-blooded Americans and not "illegals" committing them.

Your logic is so incredibly sound.

      2025, $100k, ?% compliance

      [plugs data into 'model']

According to my predictions, by 2040 the Canadian government will be issuing every Canadian $1000 to bribe them into answering why they didn't comply with the most recent survey of why they didn't comply with the original survey about the lack of compliance with the now (then) 20 yr. old gun buyback program.

The "good" news is; the $1000 payments pushed compliance above 10% with "Sorry, I wasn't born then. Sorry." being the most common answer.

The one thing that's so wierd about it is that they were a bunch of hard copies put in "burn bags" and stuffed in a closet. Pretty much the entire federal government has worked off of mostly electronic records folders for the last decade and a half, at least, due to various paperwork reductions acts.

Logically, these were all digital records that were probably part of the FBI's mass deletion efforts right before Trump took office. So the only thing I can assume here is that someone took the time to print them up, put them in a bunch of "burn bags" that nobody really uses anymore because they're redundant, and hid them all in a closet until they could be shown to someone that wouldn't destroy them.

'Online leftists misunderstand the root of our housing woes'

Leftists "misunderstand" the root of all their woes, real and imagined. The default progressive world view is that they are all victims of external, oppressive forces, and that anything they don't like about life is someone else's fault. Of course, this absolves them of personal responsibility--and further discourages personal initiative. Of course, striving to achieve is also evil, since some people might do better.

There is zero proof that Trump or anyone on the administration ordered the destruction. Just a contract was canceled, for future buys.

    Stop falling for propaganda Liz.

Talk about thin skin...never seen NBA stop play for someone's wig.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/wnba-fan-ejected-after-laughing-at-player-for-wig-slip/ar-AA1JB1MA

As the Mercury guard darted around a screen to create space, her wig accidentally got tangled with Mystics guard Jade Melbourne. The hairpiece popped off and landed on the hardwood, briefly pausing the game. Copper calmly picked it up and jogged to the locker room while referees called a timeout.

“Oh no,” the game’s broadcaster reacted in real-time. “She’s going to head to the back. Oh no.”

While most fans respectfully stayed quiet about the awkward moment, one spectator didn’t. According to officials on-site, a man in the stands mocked the situation prompting Copper’s teammates to alert security. Arena staff swiftly identified the fan and ejected him from the game for his behavior.

“They made fun of her for the situation on the floor,” officials were heard telling arena security before the man was escorted out.

Leftists like Karl Marx have embraced violence like fire embraces oxygen.
This has been true since the late 19th century when anarchists would shoot and bomb politicians and political offices they hated.
This trend toward violence continued with the rich white kids in the Weatherman underground and continues to this day with the fascist Antifa brown shirts.
Don't be deceived: The lunatic left propagates peace, love and tolerance when in fact they practice just the opposite.

There were a number of other leftist offshoots from that bunch.
But none as scary and threatening as right wing extremists./s
Besides, I'm not so sure the Weather Underground wasn't a CIA creation.

The far left loves a one-dimensional villain, but I'm not sure they love the world that would come after all their favorite villains are vanquished and industries like real estate, healthcare, and investment banking cease to exist.

They seem to want a regression to the Dark Ages: an unsophisticated economy with no landlords, no insurers, no complex markets. They see complexity in the economy, the reason for which is beyond their comprehension, as parasitic.

Yes! One dimensional villains are bad, so I will rant about the far left and how they all want to take us back to the Dark Ages! Their problem is that they don't see any nuance or complexity in the economy, therefore they must all think the same stupid things!

How did her head not explode from sheer irony?

Crazy how the people doing bad stuff all have addresses." This is the specialty of the e-leftist: insinuate you're going to engage in political violence, but maintain a veneer of plausible deniability.

Compare this to the BLM riots. The left engaged in violence, vandalism, and theft (the aggregate = mayhem) for 8 months while the left cheered it on and protected rioters by pretending only a tiny percentage of protesters were involved in the mayhem. Astonishingly their plan worked and won them the presidency which pissed off the normals since rewarding terrorism is wrong.

This led to Jan 6th where the normals adopted the left's behavior so you'd think we'd see the careful bifurcation of protester vs mayhem continued, and the carefully measured rhetoric of commentators. After all we just witnessed BLM so anything else would reveal their double standard. But shockingly none of this happened. In reality people who carefully minimized every act from the left changed tactics and hyperbolized every act from the right. To them 8 months of mayhem is nothing but 3 hours is the end of civilization.

Apply this model to the left embracing murder and understand as the left normalizes this - and rhetorical protection is a part of the normalizing process - people on the right will react to that normalization as well. And while people on the left will again show us they have no problem winking at violence from left wingers [no doubt post-prison Luige and this new guy will have jobs in academia similar to Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dorhn] they will have a fit and blame everyone on the right should it happen in the reverse.

The key though is that the left will have led us another step down the path of civilizational destruction and making America worse. All this comes directly from academia which teaches the hatred and idiot economics not because they are good faith efforts to explain reality but because they reliably create votes for socialists and other radicals. This is why Trump's plan to drive settlements with universities is not enough. The faculty and administrator activists who drive these outcomes need to be fired.

Compare this to the BLM riots.

Additionally, compare the truism of "Crazy how the people doing bad stuff all have addresses." to Reason's argument that immigrants commit fewer crimes than natives and criticisms of policing and/or junk science.

Even *if* police were apprehending 100 or 99 or 95% of criminals and the split was 60/40 natives vs. immigrants there's still a very valid "known unknown vs. unknown unknown" argument where the native who murders his wife and kids gets apprehended because the school wonders where the kids are and the neighbors smell decomp, while the undocumented family in the woods gets murdered and nobody ever suspects a thing.
