Seriously? "House Republicans have virtually stopped work on all major legislation leading up to their six-week summer recess to avoid taking votes on forcing the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files," reports Axios. I suppose if you want Congress to stop spending money, this is a good thing. But it's rather pathetic that, instead of erring toward transparency, they've decided to stonewall.

"The House Rules Committee is not planning to hold votes this week to prepare major legislation for the House floor, meaning any remaining votes will likely be on small, noncontroversial bills," notes Axios. Formerly on the docket: environmental and immigration-related legislation. "But Democrats planned to force yet more votes on amendments aimed at pressuring the Justice Department to release all its documents on Epstein." So now Republicans simply won't hold the votes.

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R–Ky.) is one of the lone Republicans who is actually interested in releasing the files. Together with Rep. Ro Khanna (D–Calif.)—two former Just Asking Questions guests, for those paying attention—they introduced the Epstein Files Transparency Act (EFTA) about a week ago, which was meant to force a House vote on the release of the government's files on Jeffrey Epstein. The House refused to consider the legislation within seven legislative days, so a discharge petition has been circulated. "We all deserve to know what's in the Epstein files, who's implicated, and how deep this corruption goes," said Massie. "If your Representative won't sign the discharge petition, ask why." (Massie has the support, amusingly, of none other than Theo Von, which isn't exactly that politically useful but does show some interesting winds shifting.)

"Republican leaders are considering sending the House home as early as Wednesday, after a bipartisan clash over the so-called Epstein files broke the Rules Committee Monday night," per Politico. It's all kind of insane, though I suppose them dipping out early means they can do less damage. Still, in a better world, they'd be oriented toward transparency, like Massie and Khanna.

Scenes from New York: In May 1979, 6-year-old Etan Patz disappeared as he walked less than two blocks through Soho to get on the bus for school. It was his mother's first time allowing him to walk alone, and his was one of the first missing child cases to attract the national spotlight; Patz appeared on milk cartons and billboards, his parents seeking information about what had happened to him. On Monday, a federal appeals court overturned the conviction of Pedro Hernandez, a former bodega clerk, who had allegedly lured Patz into a basement before strangling him. Hernandez's lawyers "argued that the trial court's response to a note from the jury was improper and had prejudiced the verdict," so Hernandez will be released from prison and receive a new trial.

  • "Malaysia's government is seeking to lower US tariffs threatened by President Donald Trump to about 20%, but is reluctant to meet certain demands around electric vehicles and foreign ownership, according to people familiar with the matter," reports Bloomberg. "Malaysia has made progress addressing US concerns over the smuggling of high-performance semiconductors, but has resisted Washington's demands for an extension of tax breaks on American electric vehicles, a reduction of foreign shareholding limits in the politically-sensitive power and financial sectors, and a cut in subsidies for local fisherman."
  • "Miami's top Catholic leader stopped by the state's controversial Everglades detention center for migrants during a Sunday motorcycle ride with dozens of other Catholic bikers," reports the Miami Herald. "Archbishop Thomas Wenski visited 'Alligator Alcatraz,' Florida's new migrant detention center located in an isolated airstrip near the Big Cypress National Preserve, to pray for for [sic] detainees—a trip that he said 'emerged organically' when his group of Catholic bikers wanted to visit Florida City for lunch."
  • "There's a lot of great things about California, but raising a family is not easy here. Doing business is not easy here," In-N-Out Chief Executive Lynsi Snyder said to right-wing pundit Allie Beth Stuckey. Snyder plans to personally move to Tennessee and establish a corporate office there.

    Scenes from New York

Maybe the illegal alien thought the sleeping woman was a cat and he’d have a quick bbq snack during his subway ride.

    You were saying about Epstein?

    https://www.zerohedge.com/political/doj-announces-imminent-meeting-ghislaine-maxwell

Attorney General Pam Bondi revealed Tuesday morning that the Department of Justice is to meet with Ghislaine Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein’s ‘madam’ who has expressed a desire to talk about the so called ‘client list’.

Blanche added that “President Trump has told us to release all credible evidence. If Ghislane Maxwell has information about anyone who has committed crimes against victims, the FBI and the DOJ will hear what she has to say.”

“Therefore, at the direction of Attorney General Bondi, I have communicated with counsel for Ms. Maxwell to determine whether she would be willing to speak with prosecutors from the Department. I anticipate meeting with Ms. Maxwell in the coming days. Until now, no administration on behalf of the Department had inquired about her willingness to meet with the government. That changes now,” Blanche further urged.

It's a legitimate criticism considering they've been giving everyone blue balls about it. Just releasing the files would do more to dispel a lot of this shit than anything else.

What's frustrating the left and the cuckservative right is their perpetual devotion to the belief that "we've got him this time!" and the supposed "fever" will break. They accuse Trump voters of being groupthink cultists out of one side of their mouth while saying that Trump's going to lose all of his supporters over the Issue of the Moment out of the other.

I don't think they quite realize that his voters largely like the bulk of what he's doing, particularly on the immigration front, and their support of Trump is also driven by an intense dislike of the left and their cuckservative poodles. The criticism he's getting from the MAGA types over Epstein doesn't reconcile with their assertion that they're unthinking cultists.

Here's the other thing that's driving this. A lot of the supposed "right wing conspiracies" of the last ten years--that Obama spied on the Trump campaign using a fake intel dossier as justification, that COVID was cooked up in a lab in Wuhan with front-group funding from Fauci himself, that the 2020 election was rigged (which the left openly bragged about in Time and the numbers from 2024 later provided circumstantial evidence for), that USAID was running all kinds of gayops for left-wing NGOs while hiding behind the "global charity" soft power bullshit, that the Democrats were manipulating social media platforms to monopolize the information sphere, that Democrats have been on a "divestment" jag against anything conservative since Choco Jesus came into office, that Hunter Biden's laptop was legitimate and the left-wing media conspired to cover it up to manipulate the election--keep getting confirmed in all or in part once they start getting sunlight thrown on them.

That's what makes Trump and Bondi's actions towards the Epstein files look so shady. He has no apparent reason to protect anyone associated with Epstein at this point, especially given the radical chic bent of most of the western elite. The guy is dead and the woman who acted as the pimp is in prison looking for some kind of deal to lighten her sentence. If this was just a situation where Bondi needed to keep her trap shut because they were trying to leverage something out of Ghislaine, she should have indicated that instead of bragging about the list being on her desk.

So the impression is now that he or someone close to him is tied to this shit a lot more than just hanging out at a few parties before he found out that Epstein preferred them young, there's some very powerful people involved that will legitimately kill him if it's published, or there's an international flavor to this where Epstein was involved with Mossad, MI6, or some other foreign glowie agency and Trump doesn't want to embarrass Israel or the UK by outing them as human traffickers of minors. Whether any of those is the case is immaterial because they were yelling about it like crazy and then cockteasing everyone when they got into office. And then delivered fuck-all other than a weak-ass "there's no list that we've seen" narrative. The fuck you think you're kidding with that?

First, I agree (and have said before) that Progressives re-defined "conspiracy" for us in the 21st century, as anything that contradicts Democratic Party narratives AND proves to be largely true in the following months.

Second, I do find it fun to think about how Trump, or one of his inner circle, ran up against someone in the hyper-deep state who does NOT want any more Epstein disclosures, and has made some serious threats.

Nah, he tried to dodge like every other politician and the people said no, we do think there is something here to look at. He's now backtracking.

As for Ds, they look like craven politicos. Not winning any points on this. If their craven attempt to hit Trump over this results in actual info on who was protecting Epstein in the federal gov or any client list, then great. Still doesn't earn them points, mums the word while Biden was in office.

        The people won this battle.

The announcement of this now is likely an attempted distraction from Epstein and some red meat to Trump's disaffected base, but to me, it's a welcome distraction. And a hell of a lot better than bombing some place which seems to be former presidents' go to move.

Tulsi's documents came from Trump's 2020 declassification order. Trump left office and Biden's people ignored it. Tulsi started work on it, probably day one. Now it is all coming out, but the process started in 2019-2020.

Do you really think Trump is more concerned with Epstein than Crossfire Hurricane?

Maybe. Trump hasn't had a near mutiny of his base in his entire political career until this. So why not just release it? It sure seems like there's people that are being protected in those files.

While we don't know what's being hidden, the conspiracy theory that Epstein was using blackmail to get powerful US politicians to do the bidding of Israel is consistent with a lot of things that have happened for the past 20 or so years. That would be bigger than Russiagate.

Had Biden said there's nothing in the files so shut up, you'd be beyond certain that it was a cover up of the largest magnitude. So why such deference to Trump that you can't even imagine he would want a distraction of his most damaging issue ever?

Now do you want to talk about tariffs? Because I'm always ready to talk about tariffs.

Not to Trump. He was the target, and the people behind it tried to destroy him and his family.

If someone had just tried to destroy you and your family, would you be more concerned with getting justice for that or with Epstein?

“Had Biden said there's nothing in the files so shut up, you'd be beyond certain that it was a cover up of the largest magnitude. So why such deference to Trump that you can't even imagine he would want a distraction of his most damaging issue ever?”

I’m not showing any deference to Trump. I still want to see justice, and if we don’t find out what happened with Epstein before he leaves office I will be critical of him and everyone else involved. But I also understand why Russia Russia Russia!! is more important to him, personally.

Which is fair re: Epstein by itself.

But to say that the seditious conspiracy by the Obama administration to get him removed from office as a traitor to Russia, that derailed his first term, perpetrated by the same people that may or may not be connected to his assassination attempt, is the distraction, is pretty fucking stupid.

Remember, the memo that put the Epstein story back in the headlines wasn’t signed by anyone, and unless anyone can say otherwise, we still don’t know who authored it.

Sure. But it may still be fair to say that the Obama thing is timed to be a distraction from the less relevant distraction of the Epstein stuff. It doesn't have to be fake or irrelevant to be used as a distraction. Maybe "distraction" isn't the best word, but that is how things work in political news. Or maybe it is just a coincidence of timing. I have no idea. If there is good evidence that Obama and others engaged in illegal activity to try to challege the election, I agree that is the more important item to worry about.
Regarding Trump's comments, it does seem a bit odd how quickly he changed his narrative on that to it all being a hoax driven by Democrats. I don't know what to make of that. Seems defensive on Trump's part. But who knows what that means?

Don't know eitherway but its odd for a Friday News Dump to be used as a distraction. Usually they'd wait so it doesn't get buried over the weekend, but maybe the new media world has changed that equation.

Hunter Biden doesn’t sound too happy.

    https://www.zerohedge.com/political/fk-clooney-carville-hunter-biden-goes-expletive-laced-rant-about-everything

Hunter Biden, the scandal-plagued son of former President Joe Biden, launched into an unhinged, expletive-filled meltdown during a recent interview, attacking his own party's elite establishment while defending illegal immigration and making shocking admissions about his drug-fueled past.

In what can only be described as an unglued performance on Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan, the younger Biden lashed out at top Democrats, calling George Clooney a "fucking brand" rather than an actor, dismissing James Carville as irrelevant, and exposing the Pod Save America hosts as grifting "junior fucking speech writers" who have been "making millions" off their Obama connections.

Obama advisor David Axelrod wasn't spared either, with Biden dismissing his entire career: "David Axelrod had one success in his political life and that was Barack Obama and that was because of Barack Obama."

Biden even turned his venom on powerful Democrat consultant Anita Dunn, revealing the stunning amounts of money these political parasites have extracted from the party: "Anita Dunn has made $40-$50 million off the Democratic Party."

"All these Democrats say, 'you have to talk about and realize that people are really upset about illegal immigration'," Biden said. "Fuck you. How do you think your hotel room gets cleaned? How do you think you have food on your fucking table? Who do you think washes your dishes? Who do you think does your fucking garden? Who do you think is hear by the fucking sheer fucking, just, grit and will that they figured out a way to get here because they thought that they could give thereselfses and there family a better chance?"

I don’t know about anyone else, but I do my own dishes and my own garden. Hunter Biden sounds like an entitled, elitist shithead.

So, if they're here making our beds, tending our gardens, and putting food on our table for us, who is left making beds, tending gardens, and putting food on the table in the places they came from?

"Sheer fucking grit" would be one thing if it were 1850 and they rushed out West in search of gold, failed, and returned to their family's community back East, but they've been there (proudly) for generations, their parents and grandparents didn't need to immigrate to America to keep the beds made, the gardens tended, and food on the table. And we've been here for the same. Our dirt isn't magic, so what changed?

OBSESSED! You want me to sign your tits, Karen?

QB deflects to a fantasy that I am obsessed with him and ignores the reality that I am simply fed up with his white miking for every TDS addled piece of shit on the Reason staff and in the comments while pretending to be reasonable. He is projecting.

My very first post at Reason was a genuine query which was responded to by Michael Hihn with an unhinged rant. Hihn had bona fides as a libertarian and years of thought behind his rhetoric. The mistake in his logic, which corrupted everything else, was fear. He couldn't stomach the thought of defending himself physically, so he claimed that his right to be free from the potential threat posed by my gun was in conflict with the 2A.

QB and the 2 Stoopid Krew are just the same. They are afraid to be judged, so they want to remove the ability of others to judge for themselves. It is why they defend perversion, chemical castration, unfettered immigration and Hamas.

The core ideology behind Russiagate is simple: the Trump administration is populist, and therefore is seen as an existential threat. To elites, the threat populism poses far exceeds anything coming from Russia or China.

Why are populists treated as dangerous? Elites cite racism, misinformation, nationalism, and other pretexts. But the real reason is: populists believe that the people, not technocrats or supranational coalitions, are sovereign. They reject the idea of being governed by unaccountable elites, and that alone makes them intolerable to the system.

In short, globalism is nothing more than your run-of-mill Old Testament tyrant: petty and utterly incapable of withstanding any disagreement.

To the point that President Obama attempted to overturn the 2016 election, and President Biden called 74 million Americans a threat to the Republic.

This is why the perpetuators must be removed from power (via defunding the supranational ruling institutions) and held accountable to their crimes.

Justice is for our own safety and freedom.

Because skin color is the most important thing.

Is there NOTHING these fucks cannot twist into racism?

I clicked on this because I had seen a number of "gen Z stare" articles stream by recently...

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/lifestyle/lifestyle-buzz/actually-the-gen-z-stare-is-a-wealthy-white-privilege/ar-AA1J09hp

In the last week, I have watched irreverent TikToks, read impassioned think pieces and waded through arguments on Reddit about the one trend that holds the holy title of fad du jour: the sanctimonious Gen Z stare. If you have blissfully skipped past this clickbait cycle (how?!), let me illustrate.

Older millennials and boomers are revelling in a shared observation: if they attempt small talk with their Gen Z coworkers, they are often met with a vacant, unblinking, frozen stare.

As discourse caught on, people confessed to having similar experiences with digital natives in informal settings like grocery stores, fast food restaurants or even in the neighbourhood walkway.

    [a lot of psychobabble ensues...]

The Gen Z stare is only one new-age example of a far deeper and historic social ecosystem that continues to reward Whiteness.

I guess staring is racist, but only if you are Gen Z, and white, and are staring at a person who isn't white. Sometimes you have to wonder if these reporters truly mean what they say, or do they just write things they know will get clicks/views?

I do have some hope for the current crop of young people, but being "digital natives" hasn't helped them to be socially functional, in my opinion.

I think it's pretty hilarious how Gen-X, who were widely labeled as slackers in the early-mid 90s, have largely ended up being the nation's plough horses in their 40s and 50s and keeping shit more or less running, while the Boomers refuse to give up their political monopolies and the Millennials and Zoomers are licking their chops to put their grandparents in the ground so they can inherit the house they otherwise can't afford to buy.

I'm not one to crap on the Boomers for supposedly having it so easy in life. Anyone who's gone through their history, contemporary news reports from the time, or was raised by them knows otherwise. The 1973-83 period alone was one of the worst in the country's history from an economic standpoint, and they still went through the 1991 recession, the dotcom bust, the Great Recession, and COVID.

But they also got the "Me Generation" label for a reason, even if it did apply mostly to the Jones Boomers subgroup.

‘I’m going to ask for my deportation, I can’t stand being here one more day’: The life of a group of migrants in a Texas detention center cell

[Juan] was ticketed for speeding and driving after having a few beers in February, when he was just three minutes from home.

In March, Alejandro got into a street fight that ended with him being detained for two months in Harris County, Texas. The day his lawyer and the police told him he could return home, ICE caught him outside the police station and put him in a truck.

In December of last year, someone reported to the police that Emmanuel was arguing with his wife in the car outside their Houston home. They drove him to the station. When he was released in May, as he was putting on his clothes to leave the prison, ICE officers arrived and detained him.

Jaime Navarro...spent time guarding houses that hosted drug deals. “I didn’t know anything about what they had stored in there,” he says. He then returned to Mexico and, in October 2024, back to the United States once again.

Rey Mendoza...was arrested because one night last March he felt like eating some tacos. He was in his Dallas apartment, where he lives with his wife and nieces. He went downstairs, started his Chevrolet pickup truck, and crashed into the end of another car in the parking lot. It changed his life. He didn’t have time to get the tacos. Neighbors informed the police, and they caught him. The day he was due to return home after posting bail, ICE officers were waiting for him outside the police station.

I've never heard the DUI defense that I was just a few minutes from my home, so it's okay I was driving under the influence. Is this defense only to be used if one is an illegal immigrant?

      Non Illegal Immigrant defandant:
"Yes, I was driving drunk and killed a 12 year old girl. But, in my defense, Your Honor, I was only a couple minutes from home."

      Judge: "Are you fucking retarded?"

      Illegal Alien Defendant:
"Si, I was driving drunk and killed a 12 year old girl. But, in my defense, ese, I was only a couple minutes from home."

Tariffs getting blamed for EVERYTHING now...

Story about how grocery stores are overcharging, drops this in the middle "Are Tariffs Making Food More Expensive?"

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/grocery-chain-giant-busted-for-18-price-gouging-blames-tariffs-for-spike/ss-AA1J4Ana

Consumer Reports, The Guardian, and the Food & Environment Reporting Network went undercover in 26 stores across 14 states and D.C. They found over 150 expired sale tags. Items advertised as discounted were ringing up an average of $1.70 higher, a shocking 18.4% markup.

In some states like California, grocers have paid millions in fines. North Carolina has fined 14 stores for scanner overcharges. Nationwide, pricing errors now affect one in every 25 items scanned, according to recent inspections. It’s happening in big cities and small towns. And it’s turning groceries into a gamble for shoppers.

The core of the problem is Kroger. As America’s second-largest grocer, with 2,700 stores across 35 states, its errors affect millions. The audit found that Kroger banners like Harris Teeter, Ralphs, and Fred Meyer were charging full price for advertised sale items. Mission Flour Tortillas labeled $2.99 scanned at $4.99. Pistachios tagged at $2.49 rang up at $4.99.

One-third of tags were expired more than 10 days, and some hadn’t changed in three months. Internal Kroger audits found a 6% error rate, six times higher than its own 1% target. Senator Ruben Gallego called it deceptive and potentially illegal under consumer protection laws.

Retailers, including Kroger, say tariffs are part of what’s driving grocery costs up. Kroger’s CFO told investors the company is watching tariff exposure “closely,” especially for fresh produce, and that any price hikes from tariffs would be “a last resort.”

If consumer protection laws actually run this deep I might have a few ideas about offsetting costs... 6% of items are ringing up 18.4% higher and customers still have the option of not buying them? This cumulative 1.08% price inflation is not the gouging you're looking for.

Side note: Remember, once again, how if tariffs didn't have an impact, impact would be manufactured?

The Republican have looked past so much of Trump's behavior and they can just do the same here. Trump cannot be criminally charged while President, he is unlikely to resign and Republican will never impeach him. So what difference does if the relationship is made more transparent?

According to this morning's NYT editorial, the Epstein "files" are front and center, Americans are "having none of it [the repression thereof]" and are threatening to "fracture Trump's base" and "energizing Democrats."

IOW, the purported "Epstein files" are like Bigfoot; believe in them as it suits you for whatever purpose you find handy.

    RIP Ozzy

You spent most of your life riding the crazy train of hard drugs, but found the strength to walk away from them, only occasionally partaking of the sweet leaf in your later years.

If it wasn't for Sharon, Ozzy would have died in the 80s. She kept the (crazy) train going all these years Plus, Oz had a helluva constitution.

Yeah, it's honestly a miracle that he didn't drop dead years ago with all the drugs he ingested. I think it was Motley Crue who said he got so fucked up during their tour together that he ended up lapping up his own piss like a dog.
