Big, Beautiful Bill Finds Its Opponents

Domestic policy bill gets lambasted: "The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country!" wrote Elon Musk on X, referring to the version drafted by Senate Republicans.

This is basically Groundhog Day: The last time Musk critiqued his former BFFs in the Trump administration, it was over…the House version of the same bill (and its impact on the deficit). Things got dirty: Musk suggested that Trump was implicated in the Jeffrey Epstein files, while Trump basically said that Musk is a drug addict.

On Saturday, the newer version of the legislation "cleared a key procedural vote, 51–49," per CNN. "Trump has demanded to sign the bill on the Fourth of July, but the measure must still go back to the House if it passes the Senate. Saturday's vote allows the Senate to begin debating Trump's bill, teeing up a final passage vote in that chamber as soon as Monday." Holdouts will need to be dealt with: Republican Sens. Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Rand Paul of Kentucky both broke with their party and voted against the bill, but for different reasons—Paul because it raises the debt ceiling, and Tillis because he thinks the cuts to Medicaid are too steep.

Tillis also announced this weekend that he would not seek reelection after crossing Trump. "As many of my colleagues have noticed over the last year, and at times even joked about, I haven't exactly been excited about running for another term," he explained in a statement. "That is true since the choice is between spending another six years navigating the political theatre and partisan gridlock in Washington or spending that time with the love of my life Susan, our two children, three beautiful grandchildren, and the rest of our extended family back home," he said. "It's not a hard choice." (Trump had already threatened to primary Tillis, and Democrats have long viewed his seat as a possible flip, so it's not altogether shocking that he's out after his term is up.)

"A new analysis from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found that 11.8 million more Americans would become uninsured by 2034 if the bill became law," reports the Associated Press. "It also said the package would increase the deficit by nearly $3.3 trillion over the decade." The bill would also extend Trump's 2017 tax cuts, codify his signature "no taxes on tips" measure, reverse billions' worth of green energy tax credits, and impose more work requirements on food stamps and Medicaid.

Work requirements: Work requirements for food stamps is a bit of a callback to the Clinton era. But some states (such as Georgia and Alabama) have been tinkering with this in recent years, seemingly as a means of trying to boost employment for the poor. "The provision [in the House bill] would deny coverage to applicants who can't show they're already working, volunteering or enrolled in an educational program for 80 hours a month before they are enrolled," CBS reports. "States, which administer Medicaid to their residents, would be permitted to block enrollment to people who can't show they have already had months of work under their belt," one policy expert told CBS. "States could also require people to verify their employment as frequently as once per month, and require up to six months of consecutive work to keep their Medicaid enrollment."

Some libertarians believe that, if government aid is to be doled out at all, attaching fewer strings is the best way to a) allow people to live freer lives, not dictated by the paternalistic state, and b) reduce the administrative burden. But at first blush, I'm not sure I oppose these requirements: If we are going to have welfare, perhaps rules such as these make more sense than giving people stuff for free.

Scenes from New York: With Zohran Mamdani winning the mayoral primary, a fresh wave of glorious anti-socialist content is cresting. Coincidence?

"abolish capitalism!"

  • "Millions are injecting GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic to shed pounds, but they're discovering an ugly truth: the drugs turn longtime users into deflated balloons," writes Pirate Wires' Oliver Bateman. But "since the discovery of myostatin inhibitors in the '90s, scientists have been digging around for a use case. At first, they thought these drugs could treat muscular dystrophy, but that didn't work. Now they've found their killer app: preventing the 'muscle tax' that makes Ozempic users look so weak." ("Scholar Rock could receive FDA approval within months and become the first to market. Its stock exploded 300 percent when data from the trial summarized above dropped." Other companies to watch: Biohaven, Roche, Eli Lilly, and AstraZeneca.)
  • "The trade deal signed between U.S. President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer lowering some tariffs on imports from Britain has come into effect, the British government said on Monday," reports Reuters. "British car manufacturers will now be able to export to the U.S. under a reduced 10% tariff quota from an earlier 27.5%, while the current 10% tariffs were fully removed for goods like aircraft engines and aircraft parts, the statement said, reiterating details announced earlier in June."

And Canada backs down...(note that the proposed tax was retroactive to 2022, meaning no company could have possibly made moves to avoid the taxation, moves like cutting off access for Canadians).

    https://www.newsweek.com/canada-us-trade-talks-resume-digital-tax-reversal-2092304

Canada and the United States have resumed trade negotiations after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney agreed to rescind the country's digital services tax on U.S. technology companies.

The development follows President Donald Trump's announcement on Friday that he was suspending all trade talks with Canada "effective immediately" over the tax policy.

Trump's Friday announcement followed Canada's confirmation that it would proceed with its digital services tax on technology giants, most of which are U.S.-based, despite a previous G7 agreement where the Trump administration had agreed to drop a retaliatory tax proposal from congressional consideration.

Canada's quick reversal signals the high stakes involved in maintaining trade relationships with the United States, particularly given the countries' deeply integrated economies.

I'm reminded of Speaker Pelosi's comments on the passage of "Obamacare":

“This is what our founders had in mind--ever expanding opportunity for people...You want to be a photographer or a writer or a musician, whatever -- an artist, you want to be self-employed, if you want to start a business, you want to change jobs, you no longer are prohibited from doing that because you can’t have access to health care, especially because you do not want to put your family at risk,” she said.

Every time I stumble into a discussion of universal basic income (which is obviously the no-strings attached welfare state final solution), it's always people wanting to be artists or poets who are advocating for it the hardest.

Why is that? It's because making money as an artist or poet is damn hard...people will simply not pay for art that does not move them (or at least represent a decent investment because it will move someone else down the road). We're supposed to put people on the dole so that lots and lots of failed or wanna-be artists can sit around and produce their craptastic pieces? No thank you.

I always ask: "Will I finally be able to pursue my dream of playing basketball professionally without worrying about health care or basic income?"

People look at me and realize I suck at basketball, I'm barely 5' 10" and clearly have no more than 2.5 inch vertical leap..."But...you suck at basketball, no one is going to pay you to play basketball" or "You'll never be able to make a living playing basketball, you ain't got game (you simply have no talent)."

      Exactly!

I'm not so sure there are 'loads of talented artists' producing a living without any patrons. That's how artists have earned their living for centuries, and it hasn't changed much even in the modern era.

Look up any famous successful artists in history and then notice that someone rich and powerful was funding them. Obviously this mostly counts for artists who were still alive to enjoy their fame. Artists that only became popular after their death don't really count.

Perhaps you have some examples in mind?

Also, just for what it's worth, AI has absolutely wrecked the commission art community. Some artists not so much, such as sculptors, but 3D printing is coming for them too.

I think maybe I wasn't clear enough. I mean people working a regular job who do art in their own time, not people managing to make their living from art (though there are plenty of people making a modest living from their artistic talents too).
There are tons of people who are very good musicians, painters, etc. probably as innately talented as almost any professional. But since being a highly successful professional often requires very hard work and a bit of luck, as well as taking big risks, most people, even with the talent, will just get a job and let their art be more of a major hobby.
Point being, unless you are a hopeless, mentally ill weirdo, you can probably work a real job and make art just fine and there is no need for subsidies for artists.

              Fair.

My sculpture professor back during my brief stint in art school supported herself by working as a college professor and doing wrought iron furniture and selling that. I'm not sure how much of her 'real art' actually sold.

Those type of 'blue collar' artists are generally looked down upon in the art community, but they also tend to make the best livings actually doing 'art' even if it's not generally considered to be 'fine art'.

There are quite a few fantasy/sci fi illustrators that make a decent living on commission contracts with DnD/Warhammer/other nerd hobby thing companies. If you want to call that patronage, you can. Don't know if it really counts though.

            To name a few:
            Kev Walker
            Raymond Swanland
            Rebecca Guay
            Jesper Ejsing

I'm not so sure that counts as patronage rather than it just being a job, although if they do art for several publishers that's more of a contract work situation which I suppose could count as patronage since one does not need to be limited to just one patron in todays world.

Personally I'd say if you're getting work with the major publishing houses then yeah, it's probably fair to consider that patronage. If someone is self-publishing their novel on Amazon, the cover is probably AI created and there's even a pretty good chance the book itself is written by AI.

"Check out this original Biden I have hanging in my living room!", said no patron of the arts ever.

It would be damn amusing as a conversation piece I suppose.

I have actually seen some of H. Biden's work, and I'd say it isn't poorly constructed but it's also essentially what you would see in any hotel room in the country. There is really no particularly good reason for those works to sell for what he apparently made from them beyond the 'Biden' name, and most of the art world would apparently agree there.

    https://townhall.com/tipsheet/madelineleesman/2025/06/28/awkward-wnba-make-america-great-comment-n2659447

In the broadcast, commentator Rebecca Lobo and announcer Pam Ward were discussing a foul call. Reportedly, Lobo disagreed with the officials who made the foul call.

“They disagree with you,” Ward said to Lobo.

"They do, and I disagree with them," Lobo responded. "And that’s fine. That’s what makes America great, right, Pam Ward?”

A long silence ensued. Ward did not answer.

"I should rephrase that," Lobo said, breaking the silence.

Ward responded, "Yes,” in a hushed tone.

“But yeah, I did think –” Lobo began to say before Ward interjected.

“The difference of opinions are perfectly fine,” Ward said.

“Yes, that’s a better way to say it. Sorry about that,” Lobo added.

    https://babylonbee.com/news/in-powerful-dissent-ketanji-brown-jackson-simply-writes-wakanda-forever

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following the U.S. Supreme Court's latest ruling in favor of President Trump, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson penned a scathing rebuke in a dissenting opinion where she simply wrote "Wakanda Forever."

In a 6-3 ruling, the court limited the ability of federal judges to file nationwide injunctions against executive orders, prompting Justice Jackson to defiantly quote Black Panther.

JUSTICE JACKSON, with whom JUSTICE KAGAN and JUSTICE SOTOMAYOR join, dissenting.

    Wakanda Forever.

The dissenting opinion raised eyebrows from conservative justices who reportedly expected their liberal colleagues to at least have some kind of argument based on legal precedent.

"It's like they just want to rule against Trump regardless of the law," said Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh. "But she seemed really proud of her 'Wakanda Forever' opinion. Weird."

Top legal analysts admitted that they were also perplexed by the dissenting opinion, saying it used obscure legalese they could not understand.

"No one knows what that means," said lawyer Alan Dershowitz. "Good thing dissenting opinions don't really matter. I wasn't all that impressed with Black Panther, to be honest."

At publishing time, Justice Jackson amended her dissenting opinion to include an exclamation mark so everyone would know how adamant she was.

Ozempic decreased muscle mass at the same time that it decreased fat. So, yes, fat people usually do have some extra muscle from lugging around extra pounds, but the point of the story is that Ozempic also strips them of their muscle. Some new wonder drug though, supposedly doesn't do that.

      1. SCOTUS gave JeffSarc a big sad   2 days ago

Calorie intake on Ozempic plummets. And I doubt most of the people taking it on a protein rich diet and engaging in anaerobic exercise to maintain muscle mass. So of course they’re losing muscle too.

Yes, that's addressed in the article. The people in the study or trial or whatever were people who not very active. One drug led to wasting away of more muscle mass, while the other didn't.

That's a significant impact. It's poorly framed, as I doubt it leads to extra muscle growth for active people, but a non-steroid muscle growth pill would be a "miracle" pill. Maybe it would have worse side effects than steroids/hgh/peds, or maybe not.

It is an interesting result that's worth following up on.

Great car by all I've heard and the engineering behind it is impressive but until the general public can afford them the way they can a Toyota Camry, then it could go away tomorrow along with the laser disc and every other next thing gadget and it wouldn't change anything. The cars are revolutionary in that they made electric vehicles kick ass and desirable.

Also, the Tesla supercharger network, the Powerwall and the Tesla solar roof are revolutionary, and Tesla's batteries are near revolutionary, and the Tesla bot will be as world changing as Starship.

Also, Starlink is on the cusp of revolutionizing cell phone access.

      Musk over Biden? Agreed.

If Trump is the alleged pedo, we've had everything from baseless accusations to documented affairs going back over 40 yrs. flagrantly laundered in the public sphere to extort and slander him. If there were satellite photos of the guy within 100 ft. of a naked minor in the same building, we'd have seen them and, even then, there would be a pretty well-established MO of preferring aging porn starlets, 30-something models, and middling sex columnists.

Not all drug addicts are homeless bums on the street. I'd be more inclined to believe Musk abuses/uses some illegal drugs than that Trump is a pedophile. Musk is smart enough that he could be a drug user/abuser and still be very high-functioning. If there were truth to the Trump accusation, I don't see how, in a million years, it wouldn't have come out in any of his presidential campaigns.

But I'm with you in that I suspect both accusations are bullshit.

Trump took two proffered rides on Epstein's plane according to the flight records.

Both times were with his family (wife, kids) listed in the flight manifest, and both were out of New York because Trump Force One was grounded due to weather in Florida.

According to almost a dozen individual accounts and a newspaper story at the time, Trump publicly kicked Epstein out of Mar A Lago for hitting on another guest's teenage daughter.

More importantly, Musk didn't say Trump was a pedo, and Trump didn't call Musk an addict.

Unless the photos with Trump also expose other powerful people who are being protected. But I think you are right, doesn't seem like Trump's MO. And attraction to under 18s isn't pedophilia anyway. There's nothing magic about age 18, it's just the age we've settled on as a reasonable threshold for (almost) full adulthood.

Well, 18 might be accepted for legal fuckability, but certainly not for self-support and personal liability--at least according to Democrats and Libertinians.

Come to think of it, Democrats also oppose any age for female consent. Or at least consent that can't be amended years later.

The problem with that is people who don't want to be adults. Some people need to be forced into it. Because adulthood isn't just about how other people treat you or perceive you. Part of the idea of adulthood is (or should be) that no one else is obliged to support you when you are an adult. And that's pretty important.

Four women who competed in the 1997 Miss Teen USA beauty pageant said Donald Trump walked into the dressing room while contestants — some as young as 15 — were changing.

"I remember putting on my dress really quick because I was like, ‘Oh my god, there’s a man in here,’ " said Mariah Billado, the former Miss Vermont Teen USA.

Trump, she recalled, said something like, "Don’t worry, ladies, I’ve seen it all before."

Three other women, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of getting engulfed in a media firestorm, also remembered Trump entering the dressing room while girls were changing. Two of them said the girls rushed to cover their bodies, with one calling it "shocking" and "creepy." The third said she was clothed and introduced herself to Trump."

You are correct regarding the ownership comment...that was given to Howard Stern in the early 2000s and was about other beauty pageants where he would walk into the dressing room while the female contestants were changing clothes. Not sure that makes it any better but at least they weren't as young as 15yrs old?

Dude had unprotected sex with a porn star. And then over paid for it. His judgment is questionable. He cheated on each of his 3 wives repeatedly. You don't have to defend his personal life to like his politics. But to pretend that he isn't a scumbag in real life is a fools errand. And scumbags are going to do scumbag things. Like BFF with Epstein before his first federal indictment.

So often reminded of this oldie-but-goodie...

        https://www.salon.com/2010/03/16/hipsters_food_stamps_pinched/

Magida, a 30-year-old art school graduate, had been installing museum exhibits for a living until the recession caused arts funding — and her usual gigs — to dry up. She applied for food stamps last summer, and since then she’s used her $150 in monthly benefits for things like fresh produce, raw honey and fresh-squeezed juices from markets near her house in the neighborhood of Hampden, and soy meat alternatives and gourmet ice cream from a Whole Foods a few miles away.

“I’m eating better than I ever have before,” she told me. “Even with food stamps, it’s not like I’m living large, but it helps.”

Mak, 31, grew up in Westchester, graduated from the University of Chicago and toiled in publishing in New York during his 20s before moving to Baltimore last year with a meager part-time blogging job and prospects for little else. About half of his friends in Baltimore have been getting food stamps since the economy toppled, so he decided to give it a try; to his delight, he qualified for $200 a month.

“I’m sort of a foodie, and I’m not going to do the ‘living off ramen’ thing,” he said, fondly remembering a recent meal he’d prepared of roasted rabbit with butter, tarragon and sweet potatoes. “I used to think that you could only get processed food and government cheese on food stamps, but it’s great that you can get anything.”

The funniest part about "a)" is that this is the exact sort of selectively favorable paternalism that Reason-style "libertarians" and counterculturalists would otherwise recognize as "Sky Daddy" worship in other contexts.

Dad giving you money more freely because he more generally approves of your behavior is not less paternalism. No Dad giving any money is less paternalism and atheists, if they weren't overwhelmingly delusional retards, would know and recognize this.

Ultimately it's a terrible idea, but I can see the argument. Trying to manage people's lives through welfare requirements obviously hasn't worked. The biggest problem I see with replacing conventional welfare with UBI or no-strings grants is that when people inevitably fuck it up and are still destitute despite the programs, there will be demands to do more to save those people. It will still breed dependence and sloth and it's still other people's stolen money.
So there isn't anything libertarian about it. It's just a debate on which bad, unlibertarian option is preferable. If there were a way to make sure that a less restrictive program would replace all other welfare completely and forever, then it might be worth thinking about as a sort of wonky policy debate. But that's never going to happen.

      1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   2 days ago

Agreed. But IF libertarians want to accept a government role in providing sustenance for people who can't support themselves, then I would like some strict screening to determine "can't". So, no "work requirements", but if you can work but chose not to, GTFO.

      2. Medulla Oblongata   2 days ago

I've made an argument in past discussions of a string-free UBI that would replace all welfare (e.g., per Charles Murray and Milton Friedman).

It will never work that way.

There will still be screams from people concerned about drug addicts not buying food for their kids and that sort of thing. Because drug addicts will spend all the strings-free cash they are handed on more drugs. Alcoholics would probably similarly choose to feed their addiction rather than their kids. Many would eschew paying their rent, etc., to.

So the only way to "protect" these people is to have programs that provide those things to them...since they can't be trusted to do the right thing with their string-free welfare cash.

And if we're going to throw out jurisdiction, can a different lesser court issue a universal injunction on all of the other courts issuing universal injunction?

"Scholar Rock could receive FDA approval within months and become the first to market. Its stock exploded 300 percent when data from the trial summarized above dropped."

Patients lost 30 pounds total and only 1.5 pounds were muscle (versus 7.9 pounds on semaglutide without the myostatin inhibitor).
    ...
Instead of losing weight as 70 percent fat and 30 percent muscle, patients on the tirzepatide-apitegromab combo lost 85 percent fat and 15 percent muscle.

When I first read about the proposed combination from Regeneron, myostatin didn't just slow muscle-mass loss, it wholly prevented it if not caused muscle mass gain.

Then there is the issue, of course, if you take people too out-of-shape and lazy to walk up a flight of stairs to lose some weight, give them drugs to lose fat while maintaining muscle, it doesn't exactly help their cardiovascular atrophy/deficiency and arguably hurts just as much.

Of course. And of course, Republicans do the exact same thing to Democrats. This is why politics genuinely sucks. I'm not against dropping a 'bunker buster' on DC. Just evacuate Paul and Massie first.

We should try getting rid of the democrats and see what happens. Of course, this must involve criminalizing the practice of Marxism, to prevent a resurgence of their kind.

Wanna know why 'the homeless crisis' won't go away?

"Top executives at San Francisco nonprofit groups working with homeless rake in big bucks"
    [...]
" The newspaper also took a look at compensation, which included benefits, bonuses, retirement, deferred compensation, and other nontaxable benefits among the top executives who held some of the city’s most lucrative homelessness contracts. The average was $300,000 a year, though the top end was near $680,000. San Francisco’s median household income was $141,446, based on 2019-2023 Census Bureau data..."

Well, yeah, and this is true of every group like them too.

If you actually solve the problem, your sinecure disappears.

But if they paid these executives just $141,000 in San Fran, then the executives would be homeless within a year and needing housing assistance from the NGOs they used to lead.

What I got from this article

    (1) Work requirement for Medicaid is sort of ok, the federal government not bailing out state that expanded Medicaid and busted their budget is sort of bad

    (2) Government cutting deals with witnesses to testify is u paralleled corruption. The guy was apparently inside the car when the cops stopped abrego.

    (3) Noting that a sitting sc justice writes in a conversational tone that would net a B- grade in a high school essay is petty.

Garcia sold pupusas, which is a more representative of immigrant labor than the hallmark portrayal of backtracking farm work. Less than 1% immigrants work in farms.

This guy would have been a net plus to the nation only if he was a decent human being. He um, wasn’t.

Some libertarians believe that, if government aid is to be doled out at all, attaching fewer strings is the best way to a) allow people to live freer lives, not dictated by the paternalistic state, and b) reduce the administrative burden.

I've got a great way for people to "live freer lives, not dictated by the paternalistic state" - don't take the money. When you're asking other people give you stuff, their conditions aren't an imposition on your freedom. You don't have a claim to it in the first place.

I hate to say it since it's the old 'no true scotsman' libertarian saw, but I'd suggest that people who think that are not 'libertarian'. Freedom from responsibility is not a thing, or shouldn't be.

But at first blush, I'm not sure I oppose these requirements: If we are going to have welfare, perhaps rules such as these make more sense than giving people stuff for free.

Yes, while neither position is terribly libertarian at least the second statement carries some personal responsibility on the part of the person receiving transfer payments from the government. In this particular case it's an option between a totally not libertarian 'solution' and one that might at least be sane if not preferable for libertarians.

With regard to the Reyes situation, how is this fundamentally different from the Feds granting immunity for testimony? I'm open to agreeing its corrupt. But, this doesn't seem fundamentally out of the usual.

Immunity is typically granted for pending charges/cases. E.g, one co-defendant/co-conspirator agrees to testify against other co-defendants if granted immunity. Looks like this guy was already convicted and was in prison and is now being released early.

Jackson is incompetent. Her opinion does show she supports an imperial judiciary. She seems to want 94 presidents, the number of federal district courts in the US. What does she think the purpose of voting is for if we have 94 unelected judges that are the true leaders of the country? It amazes me how a sitting SCOTUS Justice is that incompetent. Though what should we expect from a DEI hire?
