President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he would take up to two weeks to decide whether to join Israel in attacking Iran, as the world waits to see if the U.S. military will involve itself in another costly war in the Middle East.

Trump's pause was relayed to the media by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

"Based on the fact that there's a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future, I will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks," said Leavitt, quoting the president directly.

This delay could give U.S. and Iranian officials time to hammer out a peace deal. Trump's top negotiator, Steve Witkoff, has been in discussion with Iran since April, according to The New York Times. In the face of an unrelenting bombing campaign by Israel, which is now trying to get at Iran's underground Fordo nuclear facility, Iran might theoretically be more willing to take Trump's deal: uranium enrichment, but no nuclear weapons programs.

Of course, it's also possible that the attacks on Iran have hardened the country's resolve to fight on, making a deal much less likely than before. Indeed, Iran's regime may see the acquisition of a nuclear weapon as the only reasonable option for deterring further attacks by Israel. Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu seems inclined to give the U.S. no choice but to join the strikes on Iran. According to reports, Trump repeatedly ordered Netanyahu not to engage in wide-ranging attacks on Iran, but eventually related in the face of Israeli intelligence alleging that Iran was close to building a bomb. On the U.S. side, however, there is no new intelligence about the gravity of the Iranian nuclear threat; Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard confirmed in March that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei "has not authorized a nuclear weapons program that he suspended in 2003."

Echoes of Iraq. The situation is drawing obvious parallels with the disastrous Iraq War, launched by President George W. Bush in 2003. In that case, intelligence that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was acquiring weapons of mass destruction led the Bush administration to launch an offensive war on the country, at the cost of billions of dollars and millions of lives. The intelligence, however, was wrong.

Trump's success during the 2016 campaign was due in part to his vocal opposition to the Iraq War, which by then was considered a profound mistake by just about everybody but the Republican Party's establishment. In the Republican primary debates, Trump railed against Bush by proxy—his brother, Jeb, was running for the nomination—and scored points with intervention-weary voters.

The Make American Great Again (MAGA) base is not a monolith, and some conservative commentators seem confident that MAGA is with Trump, no matter what he decides. "Trump's supporters have his back whatever he chooses," wrote David Marcus, a Fox News columnist, in response to my question about the internal MAGA debate on this issue.

Can Trump really do no wrong, from the standpoint of his base? Maybe so. But the extent to which there is a real difference of opinion on this issue should not be ignored. Many leading Republican personalities—Steve Bannon, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R–Ga.)—are dead set against military escalation, as are libertarian-leaning members of Congress such as Rep. Thomas Massie (R–Ky.) and Sen. Rand Paul (R–Ky.). And importantly, the rightwing podcasting universe is also opposed: Joe Rogan, Theo Von, Tucker Carlson, etc. These are the platforms that Trump made ample use of during the 2024 presidential campaign. His successful appeal to young, male voters is largely and correctly attributed to this strategy. The audiences for Rogan, Von, and Carlson are non-interventionists, and Trump sold himself to them on that basis.

That might be one of the reasons why Trump has apparently decided to give peace one more chance—if that is indeed what he is doing.

Markets react. The markets love peace: The news that Trump has delayed any military action caused a favorable reaction in the stock market. "Investors on Friday are cheering President Trump's announcement that he could take up to two weeks before deciding whether to join Israel in striking Iran," reported The New York Times.

Scenes from D.C.: Summer is upon us, which means the nation's capital is plagued by sweltering humidity and high temperatures throughout the day, and then sudden thunderstorms that appear out of nowhere. One such storm even produced an impressive rainbow over the White House. Happy pride month, y'all.

QUICK LINKS

  • In other news, the Los Angeles Dodgers claimed that immigration officials attempted to enter Dodger Stadium and were rebuffed. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) denied this, staying flatly: "We were never there."
  • Fox News reporter Matt Finn contends it was Border Patrol, rather than ICE.
  • A federal appeals court has ruled that the National Guard can remain in Los Angeles, California, as the order to deploy them there was lawful.
  • A SpaceX starship exploded during a test launch.
  • Wealthy businessmen are vowing to leave New York City if Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, is elected mayor of the city. The Democratic primary election, which will likely determine who eventually becomes mayor, is next Tuesday, June 24. Mamdani is within striking distance of the frontrunner, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

In a move drawing sharp criticism from New Yorkers and political rivals alike, Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that the State of New York will allocate $50 million in taxpayer funds to cover legal fees for migrants. The funding, Hochul says, will be used to provide immigration legal services amid the ongoing influx of illegal border crossers resettled in New York.

Trump's deal: uranium enrichment, but no nuclear weapons programs.

Enrichment is a weapons program. If Iran wants reactor fuel, they can buy it from Russia or China. The only reason they want to do it themselves is to make a bomb.
*still not a reason for the US to go to war*

    1. JesseAz (Prime Meanster of Sarcasia)   2 months ago

The issue is Iran is enriching far a over levels needed for reactor fuel.

    2. Jefferson Paul   2 months ago

Or the enriched uranium at 60% (above medical needs at 20% but below weapons grade at 90%) is a latent deterrent. Iran is saying they could enrich to 90% and develop a nuke if they're pressed--like being bombed or invaded--but they're not. One can agree or disagree with that strategy, but it is absolutely possible that's why Iran did it. And it could alternatively make a good bargaining chip in negotiations. Okay, we'll only enrich to 20% or less if we get sanctions relief, for example. But the latter only would work if the US is bargaining in good faith, and not as just a ruse to conduct a sneak attack. It's myopic to believe that because they enriched beyond fuel or medical levels it means they are trying to develop a nuke to blow up NYC and Tel Aviv. Sure, it's possible, but I want evidence for it, not just Trump or Bibi claiming it. Especially when our own intelligence services had concluded (Tulsi testified under oath before Congress in March) they hadn't re-started a nuclear program and would be years away if they did decide now to restart it.

Countries have seen that having a nuke or being able to develop one is much better security against other nations' attempts at regime change. The example of Libya showed everyone that if you do disarm or have no latent deterrent, you get sodomized to death with a knife. I bet Ukraine regrets giving up its nukes too.

    ‘Minnesota Dad’

Illegal immigrant of at least 14 years living in Minnesota and still doesn't speak English
Convicted sex offender (repeatedly SA'd his 16-yo stepdaughter)
    ICE detainer denied (because Minnesota)
Still owes $28K court-ordered restitution payments
    Assaults ICE officer with car

    https://www.americanexperiment.org/minnesota-dad-assaults-federal-officer/

    The headline:

Convicted Sex Offender Illegally Present in the Country Assaults Federal Officer During Immigration Removal.

That’s from a U.S. Attorney’s press release put out this evening. Where to begin?

    Let’s start with the basics:

Who: Roberto Carlos Munoz-Guatemala, age 39, from Mexico.

He is currently being held in the federal lockup at the Sherburne County jail.

What: Injures federal officer while attempting to flee arrest. Munoz dragged the arresting officer 100 yards with his car, before the officer shook free. Munoz is lucky to be alive, the federal complaint mentions (p. 4, paragraph 9) that two officers pulled their service weapons as he fled the scene.

Munoz was tasered, twice. He was arrested by Bloomington city police a mile from the scene.

    When: June 17, 8:00 a.m.

    Where: Bloomington, MN.

The backstory, from the U.S. Attorney:

According to court documents, in December 2022, Munoz was charged with repeatedly sexually abusing a minor victim. He was ultimately convicted of Fourth-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct, a felony offense. At the time of his arrest for sexual abuse, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a detainer for Munoz. That detainer was not honored by local authorities and Munoz was released from custody.

Charged in December 2022, convicted of a felony, but freely roaming the streets in June 2025.

That the detainer was not honored is standard practice for “sanctuary state” Minnesota. Gov. Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison would have it no other way.

    Fox 9’s Seth Kaplan reports:

In the 2022 case, Munoz was found guilty of sexually assaulting his 16-year-old stepdaughter.

From state court records, traffic citations indicate that he has been living in Minnesota since at least 2011.

Munoz appeared in federal court in St. Paul this afternoon (Wednesday). State and federal court records indicate that he requires a Spanish language interpreter for court appearances.

As I understand it, Iran has buried some it its facilities deep underground to prevent them from being bombed. The only country with a bunker buster capable of penetrating that for down is the US, and the only aircraft capable of carrying it is the B2. That's why Israel wants US involvement.

Let's say Trump agrees and conducts the strike on Fordow with our bunker-buster bomb. Okay, then Iran tries to strike or does strike a US military base in retaliation. Does the US then escalate into a more direct war with Iran?

That's why claims that it's just one bombing campaign and not an actual war with Iran is completely overlooking the possible unintended (or intended when it comes to neocons) consequences.

        1. Dillinger   2 months ago

          >>Does the US then escalate into a more direct war with Iran?

if there is no Iranian military left other than missile button-pushers what would the escalation necessitate? /notsarc

          1. Jefferson Paul   2 months ago

Are you claiming that the bomb strikes have eliminated the Iranian military? My understanding is that certain high-level officers have been killed, but the actual Iranian boots-on-the-ground soldiers are still largely intact, while some air defenses are diminished, perhaps greatly.

Let's say you're correct though, and the majority of Iran's military is gone and the Ayatollah is killed shortly. Do you think that would be the end of it? Or would we see the whole nation of Iran devolve into a civil war, with high civilian deaths. What emerges from that could be far more unstable with an even worse regime taking over. Perhaps everything would work out perfectly for the US and Israel, and peace would sweep the region. I just find that to be incredibly unlikely.

The risk is that it would then result in American boots on the ground and another "forever" war in the Middle East/Central Asia for the US.

            1. Dillinger   2 months ago

              (again, /not sarc)
              >> the actual Iranian boots-on-the-ground soldiers are still largely intact

              >>Or would we see the whole nation of Iran devolve into a civil war, with high civilian deaths.

reformation from tyranny to liberty is never not costly. the Iranians need to decide which is worse.

              >>peace would sweep the region. I just find that to be incredibly unlikely.

I'm an optimist. now is the time. the Islamocrat hardliners are on the run or gone in the entire region. Iran was free in my lifetime it can be again ... the Iranians need to take back Iran like right now.

              1. Jefferson Paul   2 months ago

reformation from tyranny to liberty is never not costly. the Iranians need to decide which is worse.

I reject your premise that this will be reformation from tyranny to liberty. If regime change occurs, I find it more likely that other tyrannical leaders will fill the vacuum. That is, unless you propose the US to occupy Iran for a long time. Sure, that could prevent a similarly bad faction from consolidating power, but it would mean another Iraq/Afghanistan nation-building experiment.

I don't believe that the people of Iran will rise up and overthrow the Mullahs. That's been the promise for so much of our intervention in hostile nations, and it has yet to happen that way. And I suspect that if we topple Khamenei, then try to install someone else, the people of Iran will not view the US as liberators. The US and UK toppled the leader of Iran in 1953 and installed the Shah. Now we have the mullahs running the show since 1979. I'm sure the US thought getting rid of Mosaddegh would be great (done mostly since he was going to nationalize the oil production), but I suspect if they foresaw what would be the end result of that, they probably wouldn't have done it.

              2. Gaear Grimsrud   2 months ago

Iran continues to launch missiles into Israel every day. What would prevent them from hitting a US military base, of which there are many within range. If the theory is that their military will be completely destroyed by the Israelis in the next two weeks then no intervention will be required. If not the shit show begins.

So if a protester throws paint on a Jackson Pollock painting do the other protesters then protest them?

If they throw paint on a Magritte painting that's really behind protective glass, is it really a protest of their own framed narrative?

I approve of the wait and see approach. According to many rumors, Israel is trying to kill the Ayatollah (multiple locations where they think he is). If he dies, and nukes don't fly, negotiations might be possible.

    https://www.wsj.com/us-news/law/appeals-court-lets-trump-keep-control-of-california-national-guard-troops-in-l-a-6bf511e4

A federal appeals court on Thursday night allowed President Trump to maintain command of the California National Guard in response to the Los Angeles protests, blocking a lower court that ordered him to return those forces to the state’s control.

A three-judge panel of the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Trump’s decision to federalize the Guard was entitled to a high degree of deference. Under that standard, “we conclude that it is likely that the President lawfully exercised his statutory authority,” the panel wrote.

    https://local12.com/news/nation-world/new-data-shows-1-million-fewer-illegal-immigrants-in-us-since-january

The population of illegal immigrants in the United States has dropped by an estimated 1 million since President Trump took office.

The new data released by the Center for Immigration Studies says the decline took place between January and May and attributes the Trump administration's border lockdown and mass deportations.

Census Bureau data suggests that hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants have dropped out of the workforce and departed the country.

Preliminary calculations show that the number of immigrants in the labor force dropped by about 600,000 from January to May, and the overall number of immigrants in the U.S. fell by 957,000 over that same period.

The lead author of the study Steven Camarota says, “It looks like there’s been a Trump effect on the number of illegal immigrants in the country, based on the best data that we have.”

There now are approximately 14.8 million immigrants in the U.S., which is a million fewer than he estimated as of January, a number expected to continue to drop.

Camarota also feels that the drop in illegal immigrants is an opportunity for those who had been competing for jobs.

“I think that this is good news particularly for less-educated Americans who are likely to see a rise in wages,” he said. “Maybe it’ll even be helpful in dragging some of these non-college-educated men who are working age back into the labor force.”

I'm sure it's uh... [shuffles mess of papers]... just local police departments and... uh... [opens and shuts empty file cabinet drawer]... employers who are failing to... uh... [looks under desk] document the... undocumented people... not showing up for all the jobs Americans won't do. Sure that the number of undocumented people who showed up for jobs Americans won't do is really higher and will be revised up once all the reports on the undocumented people are finalized. Just like the numbers the FBI compiles. Both sides. Er... except I mean illeg... er... undocumented immigrants aren't criminals and shouldn't be reported the way violent crime, rape, arson, and assault should be reported accurately... but weren't.

The point is... you know what I mean. JD Vance is wrong.

The illegals are smarter than the white American liberals. They knew when they snuck in that they could be sent back, while dems remain shocked! shocked, I tell you! at the “lawlessness” of um…. deportations.

It’s all very obviously performative. It won’t age well.

Also, as someone on glibertarians put it, the spigot has been turned off (see below) and the bailing has begun (see above), now we just need to keep idiots from punching holes in the bottom of the boat.

    https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/national-media-release/cbp-releases-may-2025-monthly-update

Thanks to the good work of the men and women of CBP and the leadership of President Trump and Secretary Noem, CBP is leveraging authorities to take every step to ensure illegal aliens are expediently removed from the country. In May 2025, the U.S. Border Patrol released 0 illegal aliens into our country—a staggering drop from more than 62,000 that USBP was forced to release along the southwest border in May 2024.

In May 2025, the Border Patrol encountered 8,725 illegal aliens crossing the southwest border between ports of entry. This was a 93% decrease from May 2024 when USBP encountered 117,905 aliens. Encounter numbers continue to hold at historic lows, reflecting a border that is more secure, more controlled, and hitting unprecedented levels of operational success.

CBP’s total number of encounters nationwide, including at ports of entry, averaged approximately 952 per day in May 2025—a 2% decrease from April 2025. This was the second lowest average daily number of CBP encounters in history. Along the southwest border in May 2025, CBP’s total number of encounters decreased 93% from May 2024.

Wealthy businessmen are vowing to leave New York City if Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, is elected mayor of the city.

Oh fuck off. You voted for it, now you're... reaping the whirlwind or however the expression goes.

Oh and... "wealthy businessmen" evokes a kind of Robber Baron image, some grey-haired industrialist walking around in a Top Hat with a mustache, who runs a big smoke-stack factory down by the docks. Likely, it's some low-testosterone dude in shorts who rides an E-scooter to his Brooklyn office from his quaint restored brownstone. Either that or some hedge-fund manager because no one in New York actually builds shit any more.
