President Donald Trump continues to toy with the idea of going to war with Iran. "I may do it, I may not do it," he told reporters at the White House Wednesday in response to a question about whether the U.S. would strike Iranian nuclear facilities.

The Wall Street Journal reports that on Tuesday the president finalized an attack plan for Iran but has yet to make a final decision on whether to go through with it. Administration officials say they're considering a range of options, per the Journal's reporting.

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

In his White House remarks, Trump put the blame for the conflict on Iran's failure to come to an agreement on its nuclear program, saying, "All this death and destruction. Why didn't you negotiate with me? You would have done fine. You would have had a country."

Iran and its allies have promised to target American military personnel and civilians wherever they can if the U.S. does enter the war.

"If they decide to be engaged militarily, direct military involvement in this massacre, definitely we will do whatever necessary to protect ourselves," said Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi to CNN's Christiane Amanpour.

Iranian-backed militias in Iraq have been staging anti-American demonstrations. The leader of one of the largest Iranian-backed groups said that they would attack American civilians and military personnel if Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is assassinated (something Trump threatened to do earlier this week).

There are some 40,000 active duty U.S. military personnel stationed in the Middle East that could be targeted by Iranian attacks. American officials told The New York Times that Iran had prepared missiles and other military equipment for strikes on U.S. bases in the region.

Israeli hospital hit. An Iranian missile hit Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, Israel, on Thursday morning. The hospital, the largest in southern Israel, said on social media that the strike had caused "extensive damage."

Elsewhere, Iranian munitions fell on several residential areas near Tel Aviv, reports The Washington Post, resulting in 40 people being injured, including two people seriously injured.

Earlier today, Israel bombed Iran's Arak heavy water reactor, part of the country's nuclear program.

A Washington-based human rights group reports that 639 people in Iran have been killed by Israeli strikes and another 1,300 have been wounded, reports CBS. Another 24 Israelis have been killed by Iranian missile and drone attacks.

"We will exact the full price from the tyrants in Tehran," said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on social media, per a Google translation, in response to the Soroka strike.

— Benjamin Netanyahu - בנימין נתניהו (@netanyahu) June 19, 2025

After the recent Iranian strikes, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that Khamenei, Iran's leader, "absolutely should not continue to exist."

Running out of money. The Social Security program is eight years away from insolvency, according to the latest annual report from the Trustees of the Social Security and Medicare.

The trustees' report says that Social Security's Old-Age and Survivors Insurance fund will be able to pay 100 percent of benefits through 2033, after which it will only have enough income to pay 77 percent of benefits.

"Social Security is barreling towards insolvency. If policymakers fail to act, they will effectively be supporting a 23 percent across-the-board benefit cut for all retirees in just eight years," said the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB) in their analysis of the report.

The CRFB analysis says that the long-term outlook for Social Security is worsening, thanks to the passage of the Social Security Fairness Act last year. That law allows retired public sector employees—who'd been excluded from Social Security benefits and Social Security taxes by virtue of having a state- or local-funded pension—to receive Social Security benefits.

Medicare's Hospital Insurance Trust Fund, which pays for inpatient hospital care for Medicare beneficiaries, is likewise scheduled to be insolvent in eight years. The program would only be able to pay 89 percent of benefits come 2033, according to the latest trustee report.

Scenes from D.C.: Workers erected two giant 88-foot-tall flag poles on the White House's north and south lawns yesterday. Previously, the White House had sported a smaller flag on the roof. President Donald Trump visited with the workers putting up the flag and chatted with reporters about whether he'd start a war with Iran.

Two new flagpoles now rise at the White House — proud, unwavering, and free. This isn't just a symbol; it's the American story — written in sacrifice, stitched with courage, and raised for all the world to see.

That law allows retired public sector employees—who'd been excluded from Social Security benefits and Social Security taxes by virtue of having a state- or local-funded pension—to receive Social Security benefits.

      That is false.

      1. Don't look at me! (I miss having inflation)   2 months ago

        It is not
The Social Security Fairness Act, signed into law on January 5, 2025, eliminates the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO). This means that public sector employees who also receive pensions from jobs not covered by Social Security, like teachers, firefighters, and police officers, may see an increase in their Social Security benefits. The WEP and GPO previously reduced or eliminated benefits for some retirees.

        1. Vernon Depner   2 months ago

But that's not what Britschgi said. What he said was false.

      1. mad.casual   2 months ago

        Irreparable harm has already happened.

        Arguably, not enough.

Did anyone consider that the whole border/sex trafficking/sex discrimination/gender discrimination thing doesn't get any better for anyone if all the documents say, "I didn't see nothing."

        1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   2 months ago

All precedent says that harm must be specific and real and not abstract or speculative.

Transgender and non-binary people who possess passports bearing sex markers that conflict with their gender identity and expression are, as Dr. Scheim explained, significantly more likely to experience psychological distress, suicidality, harassment, discrimination, and violence.

All of which is purely speculative.

Can I petition the court to require the DMV to issue me a driver's license without my picture because having my picture taken causes me psychological distress? Scopophobia is clinically recognized.

Are we going to discriminate among sources of psychological distress for legal purposes? Maybe we can we set them all aside and go with what works for 99.7% of the population?

"I'm so proud and happy that I was embraced by the American people like that," he told the panel.

"Imagine - I came here at the age of 21 with absolutely nothing. And then to create a career like that," Schwarzenegger added, referencing his political, film, and bodybuilding career. "I mean, in no other country in the world could you do that. All of this is because of America."

The former governor continued, "You've got to do things legal, and those people that are doing illegal things in America, and they're the foreigners, they are not smart, because, when you come to America, you're a guest, and you have to behave like a guest."

To drive his point home, Schwarzenegger shared an analogy about how a guest in someone's home is expected to behave.

"When I go to someone's house, and I'm a guest, then I will do everything I can," Schwarzenegger stressed. "Keep things clean and to make my bed and to do everything that is the right thing to do rather than committing a crime, or being abusive or something like that, so that doesn't really work in this country."

Recognize it as performance art. When feminists get together they talk about how evil men are and the "winner" is the person with the most outrageous story to support that. That's how we ended up with the UVA Rape Hoax which claimed (among other absurdities) this frat used gang rape as an initiation ritual.
"America is the Worst" is the theme for the same process for anti-American crowd.

This is why being willing to look stupid in public is a key attribute for an activist.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/opinion-i-m-mexican-american-and-i-m-done-watching-radicals-disgrace-both-flags/ar-AA1GSw26

Across cities in California, we have witnessed something deeply disturbing: American citizens, many of Mexican descent, setting fire to vehicles, waving foreign flags, and claiming to protest “injustice.” But let’s call it what it really is — an orchestrated campaign of disrespect, disorder, and destruction. This isn’t civil disobedience. It’s lawlessness masquerading as activism.

These protestors — many of whom were born in the U.S., speak little Spanish and have visited Mexico only a handful of times if at all — are now using the Mexican flag to fuel their rage. As someone proud of my Mexican heritage and deeply patriotic about my American identity, I find it offensive on both fronts. You do not honor either country by burning down communities and waving a flag you barely understand.

Even Mexico’s own president has extended an open invitation for these individuals who apparently despise America so much to return. Yet they refuse. They shout “¡Viva México!” in the streets of America while rejecting the very idea of living in the country they claim to love. That’s not patriotism — it’s performance.

It would be absurd to go to Mexico, riot in the streets, and wave the American flag in protest. It would be seen as disrespectful, and rightfully so. The same principle applies here. If you truly respect your roots, you honor both countries. You don’t burn one down while pretending to praise the other.

    Ignoring The Truth

“Mundus vult decipi, ergo decipiatur. The world wants to be deceived, so let it be deceived.” -Petronius (1st-century A.D.)

Listening to the so-called news about the Iranian-Israel? You are being deceived. How? Little mention, if any, of the fundamental force driving the Iranians to develop nuclear weapons with which to destroy Israel, these United States, and the rest of Western Civilization. That fundamental force is their religion, Mohammedanism (Islam).

Iranian adversaries are dealing with religious fanatics. Yes, the Iranian quest for power is Persian control of the Middle East, but it is more than such a limited quest. Mohammedanism is a religion of war, a fact to which most commentators seem blind in their spewing arrogant utterances of ignorance.

“Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you. Deal firmly with them. Know that God is with the righteous.” -The Recital (The Koran), Repentance 9:123

When the mullahs label these United States, they mean it. When they pledge to destroy these United States, they mean it. When they encourage their followers to slay the infidels, they mean it. Once again, Israel is doing the dirty-work for the rest of the non-Mohammedan world.

Yet, only America military might can destroy Iranian nuclear capacity. Even then bombs without invasion are no guarantee. Either we destroy Iran, or Iran will destroy us. The Iranian people who oppose the regime appear unable or unwilling to overthrow their tyrannical masters. In order to destroy Iran, military men such as General Wesley Clark advise American action sooner not later to obviate a preëmptory, Iranian strike against American interests. Eliminating the Iranian nuclear threat is putting America first.

200 Christians Killed by Attackers Shouting 'Allahu Akbar' in Overnight Massacre

An estimated 200 Christians were killed in Nigeria on Friday according to a Catholic charity.

The massacre in Nigeria’s Benue State targeted internally displaced families living in shelters, Aid to the Church in Need reported.

The attack in Yelewata took place with attackers shouting “Allahu Akbar” (a Muslim phrase meaning “god is great”), before indiscriminate killing began.

Rev. Ukuma Jonathan Angbianbee, the local priest, said he and others barely escaped alive.

“When we heard the shots and saw the militants, we committed our lives to God. This morning, I thank God I am alive,” he said.

“What I saw was truly gruesome. People were slaughtered. Corpses were scattered everywhere."

“There is no question about who carried out the attack. They were definitely Fulanis. They were shouting ‘Allahu Akbar,’” he said, referring to a group of Islamic extremists.

“The morning after the attack, there were plenty of police and other security, but where were they the previous evening when we needed them?” another priest who was not named said, adding, “This is by far [the] worst atrocity we have seen. There has been nothing even close.”

“Many families were locked up and burnt inside their bedrooms. So many bodies were burnt beyond recognition,” Amnesty International Nigeria said, according to ABC.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/opinion/feds-tracing-money-behind-la-riots-in-expanding-probe/ar-AA1GXWVR

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is “currently tracing money” connected to the recent left-wing riots in Los Angeles in partnership with other agencies, Trump administration officials announced Tuesday.

IRS, FBI and Department of Justice (DOJ) leaders said in a video posted to X that their agencies are working together to investigate financial support for anti-deportation riots that rocked Los Angeles for several days starting June 6. The unrest has led to nearly $20 million in costs for Los Angeles so far and more than 550 arrests on charges such as resisting, obstructing or delaying, attempted murder, looting and vandalism.

“We are currently tracing money to determine who is providing funding for these riots,” IRS Special Agent in Charge Tyler Hatcher said. “Funding crime doesn’t just affect the criminals. It also disrupts entire communities … make no mistake, we will identify and disrupt financial networks supporting these criminal activities.”

FBI Director Kash Patel announced on June 9 that his agency “is investigating any and all monetary connections responsible for these riots.”

“I think it’s very different to live in the United States in 2025 than it is to live in Iran in 2025,”

Whoopi Goldberg replied, “Not if you’re Black.”

Because skin color is the most important thing in the world, and the woman paid $8M every year to yak on TV for an hour, whose net worth is north of $50M, is SOOOO oppressed in the US. Claiming that being black in America is the same as being gay in Iran is ludicrous.

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/view-hosts-tense-exchange-over-190652291.html

Griffin emphasized that “the Iranian regime today, in 2025, is nothing compared to the United States,” adding, “It is not even the same — I couldn’t step foot in this outfit in Iran right now.”

“The year 2025, the United States is nothing like if I stepped foot wearing this outfit in Tehran right now.”

Goldberg tried multiple times in vain to continue her response as Griffin continued, “No! I can’t have my hair showing. I can’t wear a skirt. I can’t have my arms out.”

Goldberg took a beat before replying to the former Trump staffer. “And that’s why I am saying that it is the same,” she said. “Murdering someone for their difference is not good whoever does it. It’s not good! So that’s why I said… what I heard is not what you meant.”

“I think it’s very different to live in the United States in 2025 than it is to live in Iran in 2025,” Griffin said. Goldberg replied, “Not if you’re Black.”

"Whoopi Goldberg replied, “Not if you’re Black.”"

Eventually, the dems are going to see that this is a losing position, and back off of it for political purposes, if they ever hope to win again. Watched this hilarious imploding of the "Unfuck America" tour, which essentially completely collapsed after the main organizer had the audacity to *watches clip*, respond to a (B)lack woman in a defensive manner when it was said she and her staff was doing a shitty job organizing. It fully devolved into conversations about making black women feel unsafe, how literally everything a yt person says to a black person can somehow be linked to white supremacy and trigger a black person, because it is inherently unsafe for black people (esp women) to live in this white supremacist world.

This was a tour, specifically designed, to target YOUNG WHITE MEN, on college campuses, and take back some of the vote share from Charlie Kirk who is scooping them up in droves, and they let the entire thing get derailed by a very simple "EXCUSE ME!! A (B)lack woman is SPEAKING!" gambit

The dems have to both realize the cancer/poison that they have created by making black women the most kept demographic in America, they have to decide to stop doing it, and they have to push back on this kind of shit from Whoopi et al. The "my child is basically being stalked and lynched by white people, all the time, on any given day" shit needs to be met with a "that's not true, now STFU and sit down"

Sam Harris did a nice long rant, shortly after Floyd, and brave of him honestly to do so at the time (I know, he's usually a bit of a TDS shitlib), giving great data pushback to all of the nonsense that people like Whoopi are spouting here.

-If you are black, you have a statistically higher chance of the cops *getting physical* with you during an encounter.
-If you are white, you have a statistically higher chance of the cops *shooting and killing* you during an encounter.
-Black people seem like they are being shot more frequently because the news focuses on literally every case and literally none of the white people
-If there is any increased disparity, its because black people commit 50% of the violent crime in the country, leading to a massively outsized number of encounters with police, relative to other races. And this isnt selling weed, its assault, murder, etc.

He also had an argument with Don Lemon, in which Don was pushing the same "oh woe is me, black people have it the worst" to which Sam shit all over that telling him that because of affirmative action and DEI culture (not what he called it), if you are black and especially black and intelligent, you have literally every advantage. Colleges, the corporate world, everybody is willing to accept a black person with slightly lower credentials than a white, jewish, asian person etc.

Enough people have to get tired of it, and this kind of pushback has to happen from the people who caused the cancer. The loud retarded black women, plus the insane trans people, steering the DNC off a cliff have to be told to sit down and STFU if they ever hope to win over normal dudes again. No one is buying this shit anymore.

Apparently the DNC is on the verge of going bankrupt.

    https://dailycaller.com/2025/06/18/dnc-ken-martin-decline-donations/

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has been grappling with infighting and a decline in donations in recent months, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

DNC Chair Ken Martin, who was elected in February, has overseen slowing fundraising from major donors, the NYT reported. Some top DNC officials have even floated the idea of whether it may be necessary to start borrowing money to continue paying the bills, according to the NYT.

Six anonymous sources told the NYT that major Democratic donors have been extremely slow to donate to the party this year. Additionally, two anonymous sources told the outlet that senior DNC officials have even floated the idea of potentially borrowing money in the coming months.

Anyone else find it suspicious that the DNC is going broke shortly after the termination of money being laundered through NGOs via USAID?

Maybe ill start counting. I feel like every 3-5 years I hear about another "OK, we past all the previous thresholds, so we are probably fucked, but if we pass this next *big important* threshold, the world is certainly doomed" and life continues to look nearly the same.

Just a quick little trip down memory lane im recalling 5 times, but im betting its happened so many more.

Do these people need to go back and read the boy who cried wolf, or chicken little a few more times?

He told them to make it high enough so that President Newscum can't get a rainbow flag up there.

"Social Security is barreling towards insolvency. If policymakers fail to act, they will effectively be supporting a 23 percent across-the-board benefit cut for all retirees in just eight years," said the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB) in their analysis of the report.

They are going to implement some combination of these cuts, increasing the FICA rate, increasing the income cap, increasing the retirement age, and taxing the benefits more if you're not so poor you have to live on cat food.

Christian, thank you for *not* telling us what to think about all this. It is a refreshing change from most of your Reason colleagues.

That law allows retired public sector employees—who'd been excluded from Social Security benefits and Social Security taxes by virtue of having a state- or local-funded pension—to receive Social Security benefits.

That is false. The law allows people who worked BOTH jobs in which they paid Social Security taxes AND government jobs with state pensions to receive the full Social Security benefits they earned in their covered jobs. Previously, their Social Security benefits were reduced.

    1. Gaear Grimsrud   2 months ago

Provided the benefit is based only on income that they paid the payroll tax on I don't have a problem with it.

      1. Vernon Depner   2 months ago

That is the case. They get the same benefit as someone who paid in the same amount but never worked a government job.

        1. Marshal   2 months ago

This is misleading. The amount of income required to get "full" social security benefits is exceptionally low, the last time I checked less than 2k/quarter. So we're giving government employees who worked a couple of shifts a month as a second job the same SS benefits as people who worked and paid in based on 60 hours a week. It's a scam giveaway to public employees - which is of course what Dems pushed it through.

          1. Vernon Depner   2 months ago

            Bullshit.

            1. Marshal   2 months ago

Social Security credits are the way the Social Security Administration (SSA) tracks your work history and determines your eligibility for retirement, disability, or survivors benefits. You earn these credits by working and paying Social Security taxes. In 2025, you earn one credit for every $1,810 in earnings, up to a maximum of four credits per year. Generally, you need 40 credits (10 years of work) to qualify for retirement benefits, but the number of credits needed for disability benefits varies based on your age when the disability begins.

Why don't you dig through this and let me know what part of my comment you think was wrong. Or conversely learn to recognize when someone knows what they're talking about.

"Social Security is barreling towards insolvency. If policymakers fail to act, they will effectively be supporting a 23 percent across-the-board benefit cut for all retirees"

Bring it on! It is clear by now that "policymakers" will continue to fail to act and, personally, I'm glad. If they fix Social Security, they can only do so by raising new tax revenue or by shifting spending from one unconstitutional purpose to another one. This means a wealth transfer from younger working families to older non-productive retired people. The People have eight years to depose the current tyrannical regime and replace it with politicians who will cut unconstitutional spending or watch their Federal investments go up in a puff of smoke, together with the world economy as the US Government declares insolvency and bankruptcy. Good luck, guys!

    1. Vernon Depner   2 months ago

Not a chance in hell this will be fixed.

That's the only kind of peace anyone has ever enjoyed.

      2. Zeb   2 months ago

I'd say not necessarily. You also need to consider whether the threat is legitimate and likely to be followed through on. Merely having the superior firepower is sufficient to deter most rabid enemies who vow to destroy us. Going to war has enormous downsides and tends to create new enemies.

I would forego future Social Security payments in exchange for immediate stop to withholdings.

    1. I, Woodchipper   2 months ago

this would be a fantastic deal that i would jump at immediately.

That's why it's not on the table.

      1. Sometimes a Great Notion   2 months ago

Of course not, their is no exchange there. Current system is keep withholding money and never payout for anyone under 50(+-). Maybe exchange a kidney for stopping witholdings.

    2. Mike Parsons   2 months ago

Same. They could do some sort of phasing out, with voluntary deals such as the one you said which technically is a great deal for the gov. Better deal for me (I bet anyways) as I trust the gov will fuck it up so bad I wont get anything anyways.

I would suggest making a decently generous cutoff, and go from there.

If you are between 55-65, you get the full deal you paid for
If you are 45-55, you can either opt out of payments in exchange for no benefits, or you get a reduced benefit when you are eligible.
If you are <45, dont expect SS. You will pay some tax now, and it will be completely phased out.

Or some shit like that. Regardless, it should be a very clear reminder that the he govt is corrupt, incompetent, and cannot be trusted with any sort of entitlement program such as SS, without spending way more, for a lesser product, or just flat out embezzling the money for other causes. We should use it as a cautionary tale to future generations that govt cannot be trusted to run a program like this.
