Not That Kind of Introspection!

Plus: Tensions in the Middle East, another terrible Boeing crash, intimacy coordinators, and more...

David Hogg | Bob Daemmrich/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom
(Bob Daemmrich/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom)

David Hogg gets the boot: "David Hogg, the young vice chair of the Democratic National Committee who divided the party over his plans to intervene in primary races against sitting Democratic lawmakers, said that he would step aside from his prominent post after the party voted to force him to run again on Wednesday," reports The New York Times. Hogg, 25, first rose to prominence as a gun control activist after surviving the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, in 2018. "It is clear that there is a fundamental disagreement about the role of a Vice Chair," wrote Hogg, detailing his reasons for quitting (following what was essentially an ouster), "and it's OK to have disagreements. What isn't OK is allowing this to remain our focus when there is so much more we need to be focused on."

Some of the criticism of Hogg has centered around his involvement in the group Leaders We Deserve, which essentially seeks to primary the old and out-of-touch within the Democratic party, supporting young scrappy progressive upstarts who might want to run for office. ("A few members of the old-school Democratic establishment are pissed at me for calling us weak," wrote Hogg in a recent fundraising email.)

Heresy!

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

"Last month a DNC panel found that Hogg and Vice Chair Malcolm Kenyatta were not properly elected earlier this year because their election ran afoul of gender-diversity rules," reports The Washington Post. And Hogg's recent comments on Real Time with Bill Maher surely didn't help his case: "What I think happened last election is younger men—they would rather vote for somebody who they don't completely agree with, they don't feel judged by than somebody who they do agree with, that they feel like they have to walk on eggshells around constantly because they're going to be judged or ostracized or excommunicated." (No lies detected.) He then mentioned that young dudes just want to "get laid and have fun." If the idea is to win the approval of the DNC scolds, Hogg is going about it in the absolute worst way possible. (As for the DNC panel's decision, Hogg commented,"I don't even know if it makes sense for us to have the gender balance rule anymore in this day and age, because I want to focus on whoever's just best at the job.")

In other words, a Democratic Party ostensibly focused on the need for course correction, self-reflection, and finding "the next Joe Rogan, but for the left" got mad at Hogg for being a normal dude willing to say the obvious, and for having fresh ideas that challenged the establishment's stranglehold.

Iran doubles down: A watchdog arm for the United Nations (U.N.) censured Iran over its nuclear program. So Iran's authorities decided to announce that they are opening up a new uranium enrichment facility.

"The vote [of the International Atomic Energy Agency board] was called over Iran's repeated refusal over the last six years to explain the presence of undeclared nuclear material in Iran," reports The Wall Street Journal. But Iran's actions show just how antagonistic it's willing to be, and just how limited the U.N. is in actually being able to enforce much of anything.

Tensions are rising, more broadly, in the Middle East, and it's a little hard to tell what discrete indicators mean in fullness. The U.S. government ordered certain staff to depart its embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, and started letting families of service members leave the region. The State Department has started letting certain government employees leave Bahrain and Kuwait.

"Well they are being moved out because it could be a dangerous place," President Donald Trump told reporters in Washington when asked about these decisions. "We've given notice to move out and we'll see what happens."

"They [Iran] can't have a nuclear weapon, very simple," he added. "We're not going to allow that."

In the recent past, Trump has held talks with Tehran to try to hammer out a nuclear deal, even going so far as to pressure Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to strike Iran's nuclear sites as it would threaten a deal. But lately, Trump has sounded bearish that actual progress will be made. And Israel appears to possibly readying to strike Iran, according to American and European officials.

Scenes from New York: "Right now, only one person in all of New York State can remove New York City's mayor from office—Gov. Kathy Hochul," reports The New York Times. "A commission appointed by the City Council says that 5,126,009 other people should have a say. That is the total number of registered voters in New York City. Last week, the commission suggested creating a new legal option to kick out a mayor—a ballot proposition to decide whether the Council should be given the authority to begin removal proceedings."

Of course, this isn't to say voters—some massive percentage of whom might be trying to elect a socialist this time around—would necessarily use their veto power well, per se. But this approach does sound more democratic than the status quo.

QUICK HITS

  • Bryan Bedford, the president's nominee to lead the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), will get grilled by senators this morning. The FAA is facing air traffic control issues and several high-profile safety incidents, so this confirmation hearing is a big deal. Bedford has experience running regional commercial airlines and currently serves as president and CEO for Republic Airways.
  • Boeing, which reached a deal with the U.S. Department of Justice last month to avoid criminal responsibility for the crashes of its aircraft in 2018 and 2019 that killed a total of 346 people, has another disaster on its hands: A plane carrying 242 people, taking off from Ahmedabad, India, and headed to London, crashed shortly after takeoff. "In April 2024, the Federal Aviation Administration said it was investigating claims made by a Boeing engineer who said that sections of the fuselage of the 787 Dreamliner"—the plane that crashed in India—were improperly fastened together and could break apart mid-flight after thousands of trips," reports The New York Times. "Boeing said at the time it had done extensive testing on the Dreamliner and 'determined that this is not an immediate safety of flight issue.'"
  • "President Donald Trump said he intended to send letters to trading partners in the next one to two weeks setting unilateral tariff rates, ahead of a July 9 deadline to reimpose higher duties on dozens of economies," reports Bloomberg. "We're going to be sending letters out in about a week and a half, two weeks, to countries, telling them what the deal is," Trump told reporters yesterday.
  • Kilmar Abrego Garcia's lawyers have asked a judge to release the man as he awaits trial.

NYT begrudgingly admits the economic tariffs did not happen. Luckily we still have true believers here.

    The New York Times
    @nytimes
Breaking News: U.S. consumer prices rose 2.4% in May from a year earlier, a reading that shows the impact of President Trump’s tariffs remains limited.

And then the jobs report shows a complete reversal from under Biden where all new jobs went to immigrants.

Not included in all the deficit articles promoting 3.8T in new income taxes... reductions in spending from other efforts.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced on Wednesday it has decreased its annual non-defense federal obligations by an additional ~1.9% since last month.

As of June 8th, annual non-defense federal obligations are down 22.4%, or ~$25B, as compared to 2024, DOGE announced on X.

These cuts will be happening through recission and can't be done through BBB.

And finally... we see a bifurcation of inflation data between state politics. Inflation is higher in blue states than it is in red states. Almost like regulatory and spending policies are the actual devices of inflation, not tariffs. Weird. Who would have known or been saying this for years...

It’s about scapegoating. People don’t like how things are going? Blame an “other” like illegals. They’re the cause. Purge society of the “other” and that will cure all of our ills.

I’m sure the 1930s were not the first time this scenario has been played out.

The only difference is that today it's not socially acceptable to go around murdering people.

              Give it time.

This is the hill they want to die on, "You can't deport ANYONE, no matter what they've done."

      https://x.com/BillMelugin_/status/1932843823048372650

You can’t be serious? The guy on the right is a convicted murderer & the guy on the left has convictions for shooting into an occupied house, willful child cruelty, DUI, assault with a firearm, & has had a deportation order since 2020.

Youre saying ICE should *NOT* arrest them?

      Aaron Reichlin-Melnick
      @ReichlinMelnick

ICE's "public safety" narrative often collapses after scrutiny:

The guy on the left was a prison firefighter, a job not available to safety threats. He was granted bond from ICE detention in 2022.

Similarly, the man on the right was paroled by CA in 2022 for good behavior.

UPDATED: Who ICE arrested before protests broke out in Los Angeles

      (quote tweeting)

Cuong Chanh Phan of Vietnam; 2nd degree murder

Lionel Sanchez-Laguna of Mexico; convicted of discharging a firearm at an inhabited dwelling and vehicle, battery on spouse or cohabitant, willful cruelty to a child, DUI, assault with a semiautomatic firearm

They specifically don't and, in fact, the opposite. It's like saying, "I don't know if my car would survive going through the car wash (or oil change... or tire rotation...)." Billions of cars go through car washes just fine. Some cars get their antenna snapped off or have a loose piece of trim break off. Sometimes you snap a lug rotating the tires. But if your car is destroyed by going through a car wash or rotating the tires, it wasn't the wash or the tire rotation that destroyed it, it was all the other deformation, neglect, and/or abuse up to that point.

Puberty isn't some edgy new fad that the kids just came up with a couple years ago. Moreover, various forms of self-harm do rotate in and out of fashion.

Then fight on the second amendment guaranteeing a state a right to a militia. How can a state have a militia if the president can simply federalize it against the direct wishes of the governor.

      DataRepublican (small r) @DataRepublican

      Hello everyone,

This "Hello" message isn't for Adam Kinzinger. It's for you, for every American who still believes in truth over narrative.

Read his words carefully: "I'm not sure why Gavin Newsom doesn’t activate the rest of his army guard to prevent the president from it or force him to overrule it."

This is not a gaffe. This was a sitting U.S. Congressman openly calling for military action against the sitting president. That is the textbook definition of insurrection.

Yet the same people who branded January 6th an "insurrection"... who demanded mass arrests, surveillance, censorship, and military occupation of D.C.--are now applauding this. Heck, even Kinzinger himself sat on the J6 committee.

They are engineering a color revolution to bring about regime change, and this post is proof.

Let this post be remembered: the people screaming "democracy" are the same ones openly flirting with civil war when they lose control. Their version of "democracy" is code for a one-party system backed by unelected bureaucrats, intelligence agencies, and corporate media.

If burning the country down helps them stay in power, they will light the match without hesitation.

They would rather rule over ashes than to see President Trump preside over a prosperous and free nation. And they will give up everything to see that happen.

Remember this moment. The mask is off. Be warned. and be ready.

      1. Mother's Lament - (Sarc's a Nazi, not even joking)   2 months ago

        Let's face it.

Anytime RINOs, Jeffries, and Democrats say:

        - Upholding the Constitution
        - Fighting for democracy
        - Save our country
        - Preserve freedoms

What they really mean is that they're going to fight like hell to coerce, intimidate, and abuse their power to persecute anyone challenging their power—power they never want to give up.

They will BURN the country down before giving up POWER.... and it starts in the streets where they FLEX their political will by using THUGS for the process.

They will say "Blue no matter who." while they elect a literal dementia-addled cancer patient to be in charge. Perfectly competent people with no real background of any sort of wrongdoing or anything but professionalism will be rejected out of hand based on the most tangential and vague implications of their own ideology, but anyone who parrots their ideology is in. So let’s review: We have violent riots involving foreign nationals attacking federal law enforcement while claiming LA is part of Mexico.

We have the President of Mexico supporting them, and the president of the Mexican Senate claiming that the SE US is part of Mexico.

You have the Governor of California trying to get the courts to take the president’s authority over the national guard so they can’t defend national law enforcement from said foreign nationals. And now a congressman from that state calling for the governor to use the national guard not being used to defend national law enforcement to stop those defending them.

      What would you call this?

Depends on if you’re counting from the start or end of the war. Using the end of the war, it’s a mere 27 years. Either way, it was Spanish since the 16th century.

            1. Mother's Lament - (Sarc's a Nazi, not even joking)   2 months ago

Mexico went to war against the Spanish to get it. The Spanish Empire wasn't simply inherited.

              Spanish Empire: 1697–1810, 113 years
              Mexican Empire: 1810 - 1846, 36 years
              United States of America: 1846 - 2025, 179 years

It's been American longer than it was Spanish AND Mexican.

              1. InsaneTrollLogic (Sarcs Kampf mit der Realität)   2 months ago

And the Mexicans can thank Napoleon that they even got that part in the first place. If not for the French invading Spain in 1808, Mexico would never had had the chance for their war of independence.

              2. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   2 months ago

It's been American longer than it was Spanish AND Mexican.

Not only that, the US treaty with the Mexicans to end the war provided to all of the residents of California US citizenship and continuing property rights. The US did not take anything from Mexican citizens. The Mexican residents of California became Americans.

American settlers either claimed property not in use or bought land from fellow Americans, not Mexicans.

                1. Square = Circle   2 months ago

The Mexican residents of California became Americans.

FOR 36 YEARS, TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO IT WAS PART OF MEXICO !!! DON'T YOU EVEN HISTORY???

And that wasn't even universally acknowledged - there was a civil war in California in the 1820s over whether to acknowledge Mexican sovereignty or claim independence the way Texas had.

And the fact is that neither Spain nor Mexico ever had any real interest in California - the Missions were expanding essentially on auto-pilot by the 1700s, and General Portola, who escorted the friars into California, thought settling California was idiotic and a waste of resources. California was so impoverished and backwards that they couldn't even pay Spaniards to settle there, so they had to modify their settlement laws to count Spanish-speaking mestizos from northern Mexico (not even properly Mexicans) as "Spanish" settlers.

They were so uncommitted to really operating any kind of government in CA that the closest appeals court serving CA was in Guadalajara.

And the icing on the cake is that the only real bloodshed in the US taking CA was John Fremont and another guy whose name escapes me intentionally starting fights in the LA area because what good is conquest without at least some fighting?

Hogg is a perfect example of someone who was indoctrinated by the Marxist captured public education system. He pretty clearly describes reality, meaning he has some amount of intelligence and self-awareness. The mistake that he made is not perceiving that "experts" (professors, teachers, scientists, politicians, journalists) are willing to lie and hide the truth to train the public to think in ways that increase the public's reliance on experts.

I give exactly two rat’s asses about whether someone is here illegally. Borders are artificial constructs made by big governments that want to maintain large standing armies.

Neither to I. We should just turn off all artificially constructed government subsidies, welfare, housing, rental assistance, healthcare, all of it to zero. NO minimum wage, no Social Security, no food stamps, nothing. Zero, zilch. We open the borders and go back to 22 family members in a single room apartment next to a smoke-belching factory while grandma dies of consumption.

      Make no mistake.

simping for illegals is rooted in anti-white animus.

I know this because the same people who excuse illegal immigration because whites are not indigeous to North America ALSO support mass migration into Europe where whites ARE indigenous, instead of saying that white Europeans get to gun down invaders en masse.

They believe in this colonizer-colonizee dynamics. They feel that whites are responsible for all the evil in the world, so they support violent criminals immigrating in and committing crimes against whites, especially sex crimes against white girls.

They cheered the Colonge Sex Attacks.

Of course, if little black boys like AJ Wise are killed by illegals, they just consider it collateral damage!

        1. bye   2 months ago

Sorry, data , plain old data, has disproved your view.

Journalist Andy Ngo reported that “Far-left extremists set up a website to crowdfund riot gear for the open border insurrectionists in Los Angeles.”

Orellana is an alleged member of the Brown Berets, “a radical Latino paramilitary group that are currently embedded in cities across the United States,”

Look, you had fun making all that up. You'll have another chance. Go see what Mommie is making for dindin

          1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   2 months ago

Disproved what? You can buy those at Home Depot, $29.99. Different brand, exact same product.

            https://www.homedepot.com/p/BISON-LIFE-OSFM-Black-Full-Face-Protector-Shield-Reusable-Safety-Face-Shield-1-Pack-BLSH-HD-FFP-HG/316377130

They are meant to protect from sparks and dust. It is definitely not a gas mask and a rubber bullet would go right through the face shield. Paint ball or motorcycle gear would actually afford some protection.

Look, I didn't say the guy wasn't all Viva La Revolution, but showing up with a truckload of safety gear from Home Depot is not delivering tactical supplies to enemies of the state. Unless he was ordered to disperse and refused, what is the crime there? He didn't even provide anything that would protect from the deterrents the police use: tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets. Is the food truck around the corner guilty if a rioter bought a burrito?

Bullshit FBI arrests are bad for everybody.

        2. GOD OF PENGUIN ISLAND   2 months ago

He delivered a truck load of them to the middle of the riot. I posted his picture taken by a citizen journalist on X a couple days ago.

If the guy were caught delivering commercial grade fireworks subsequently used unlawfully, sure, that is part of a conspiracy to cause damage and injure. But safety gear, water and sandwiches? A conspiracy to prevent boo-boos and grumpiness?

The FBI are obviously incompetent and behave unlawfully whether they are working for the left or the right.

    SMS Alert Text:

Nationwide anti-Trump protests planned for Saturday, June 14, 2025. Events in larger metro areas hold potential for violence. Caution urged. More via email.

    Supplemental Info:

Anti-Trump protests will be held nationwide on Saturday, June 14, 2025.

The "No Kings" protests are a "nationwide day of defiance" to "reject authoritarianism," according to the organizer's website.

The protests are intended to counter three events being celebrated on the same day:

The US Army's 250th anniversary and parade
    President Trump's 79th birthday
    National Flag Day

Groups reported to be backing / funding the No Kings movement include:

Indivisible (Soros-funded group resp for the ongoing Tesla protests)
American Federation of Teachers (Labor union led by Randi Weingarten)
Sunrise Movement (Radical climate activist group)
National Women’s Law Center (Women's / LGBTQ rights)

If you are local to any of the planned protests:

Extreme caution is urged near those gatherings in major metro areas.
Anticipate disruption of traffic on major roadways
Online chatter incl mention of possible blockades of airport access points .

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/los-angeles-da-delivers-scathing-warning-to-violent-protesters-causing-havoc-we-re-coming-for-you/ar-AA1GxBjw

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman sent a strong warning Wednesday to those behind the recent riot violence: "We will track you down. We will arrest you. We will prosecute you. And we will punish you."

Standing with LA Sheriff Robert Luna and LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, Hochman announced felony charges against several rioters accused of attacking officers, looting stores and vandalizing public property.

More arrests and charges are expected in the coming days.

"Let me provide some bad news for you," Hochman said. "There’s a tremendous amount of video out there through social media, and otherwise we will know who you are, who engaged in this conduct. … So, for people who've already engaged in this, in this illegal activity, we're coming for you."

Five criminal cases were detailed during the press conference. Juan Rodriguez of Gardena is accused of handing out and throwing commercial-grade fireworks at LAPD officers, injuring one. He faces over six years in prison.

Randy Paul Ruiz and Georgina Rava-Yero allegedly drove motorcycles into a police line, injuring officers. Both face felony charges and over six years in prison.

In a separate case, Timmy Paulk and Rayven Mitchell were charged with allegedly looting a Nike store downtown. They face up to three years in prison.

Ulysses Sanchez, a three-strike felon, was charged with assault and gun possession after allegedly recklessly driving through downtown and injuring bystanders. He could face 25 years to life.

Christopher Gonzalez and Yoselin Johnson were charged with felony vandalism after allegedly painting graffiti on the Hall of Justice. Deputies say they found paint buckets and a large roller pole in their car.

"These are not protesters," said Sheriff Luna. "There’s a big distinction between individuals that protest and demonstrate to violent, destructive, basically anarchist. ... What we’re talking about are the individuals who don’t care about the issue at hand."

"This is no longer a protest when commercial-grade fireworks are being used as weapons, and our officers are under direct attack," he said. "That’s not free speech. That’s a felony.

Bluesky is backfiring. Mark Cuban says the ‘lack of diversity of thought’ is actually pushing users back to X

In a series of posts this week, Cuban argued Bluesky has become too much of an echo chamber, and is sending more users back to X.

“Engagement went from great convos on many topics, to agree with me or you are a nazi fascist,” Cuban wrote. “We are forcing posts to X.”

The former Shark Tank star and Dallas Mavericks owner also said he thinks Bluesky users have “grown ruder and more hateful.”

“Even if you agree with 95% of what a person is saying on a topic, if there is one point that you might call out as being more of a gray area, they will call you a fascist etc.,” said Cuban, whose current net worth is about $8.33 billion, according to Bloomberg.

Bluesky did not respond to Fortune’s request for comment.

Cuban also re-posted a Washington Post opinion article published Sunday titled “The Bluesky bubble hurts liberals and their causes.” Author Megan McArdle argued Bluesky’s left-leaning user base segregates it into a political silo. Cuban agreed.

“The lack of diversity of thought here is really hurting usage,” Cuban wrote in a separate Bluesky update including the Washington Post article. “The moderation and block tools on here are so advanced, if you see someone you don’t want to see on here, just block them. Don’t attack them.”

“There used to be great give and take discussions on politics and news. Not so much any more,” Cuban added. “Doesn’t have to be this way.”

    1. Marshal   2 months ago

“Engagement went from great convos on many topics, to agree with me or you are a nazi fascist,” Cuban wrote. “We are forcing posts to X.”

If he's referring to early engagement on BlueSky this is a lie. From day one BlueSky was "agree with me or you are a Nazi Fascist". That was its founding ethos since they could no longer browbeat twitter into enforcing that same message. This is why the left wing commenters here advocated moving to it.

      1. mad.casual   2 months ago

You're not wrong, but you're not viewing it through the Mark Cuban lens. First, Mark probably found numerous groups that he agreed with, that 'other people' are Nazi Fascists. Second, there probably was a bit of "Holy Shit! You're Mark Cuban!" before it degenerated to "You Nazi Fascist!" for him. Third, we're talking about a guy who will sit down with "Eat the Rich" Progressives in opposition to a business-magnate-turned-reality-TV-show-host President. Nobody's hiring him to teach their self-awareness and personal introspection clinic.
