Everything Got Worse During COVID
By almost every measure, America during the pandemic was a more dangerous, deadly, and dysfunctional place.

Last week, Reason's Billy Binion reported on some undersung good news: American murder rates are falling fast. This year could end up being the least violent year on record.
This is, of course, a welcome development by itself. It's an especially laudatory trend, coming as it does on the heels of a massive murder spike during the pandemic, when homicides rose by 30 percent in the average U.S. city.
The COVID crime wave is well understood by now. The all-cause rise in mortality during the pandemic is a little less appreciated. No matter how you slice it, America during COVID was a sicker, deadlier, more dangerous, and generally more dysfunctional place.
Between 2019 and 2021, drug overdose went up some 55 percent and traffic fatalities rose 20 percent.
These fatalities, alongside an estimated 1.2 million COVID deaths, helped push the country's death rate from 723.6 deaths per 100,000 people in 2019 to a high of 879.7 in 2021.
Remarkably, only suicides seemed to have resisted the rising death trend, falling in 2020 before rising slightly above pre-pandemic levels in 2021.
Mercifully, murders, traffic deaths, and overdoses are now all falling from their pandemic-era highs. (Suicides continue to climb.) But the overall age-adjusted death rate in 2023 (the last year for which we have complete data) is still above pre-COVID levels.
COVID was certainly a public health disaster. The effort to combat it by pausing day-to-day social and economic life created its own disasters for people's health and well-being.
How much of that latter disaster can be blamed on formal lockdowns and stay-at-home orders vs. ubiquitous (albeit voluntary) public health guidance to socially distance, to individuals' own natural reticence to be around each other in the middle of a pandemic is a worthy topic of debate.
The top-line takeaway remains the same: going to work, church, or one's chosen "third place" goes a long way toward keeping people alive and sane. When sociability falls, antisocial behaviors spike.
Governments' massive emergency expansion of the welfare state seemingly did little to ease the pain.
Stimulus checks, cash transfers, tax credits, and expanded unemployment insurance pushed the poverty rate down. This on-paper improvement in people's financial condition couldn't stop them from driving more dangerously, doing more dangerous drugs, and killing each other more.
Shutting down whole swaths of the economy, and then paying people to stay home, caused its own ill effects.
The U.S. Misery Index—a combined measure of the unemployment and inflation rates— rose from 5.44 in 2019 to a peak of 11.65 in 2022. It's currently at 6.98.
At his confirmation hearing to be director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Jay Bhattacharya was unapologetic about his prior vocal criticism of society-wide stay-at-home orders. States like Florida, with its lighter, shorter lockdown, ended the pandemic with a lower all-cause mortality than archrestrictionist California, he noted.
It's a sign of the times that none of the Democrats during that hearing pushed back on this particular point.
If history is any guide, the pandemic will quickly fade from the collective memory. One hopes that this particular lesson learned—that society can't just be turned off and on again without courting disaster—sticks.

When was the Communist Chinese Flu?
Do try to keep up Christian.
Keep up? They were reporting about how JD Vance and Trump were wrong about the latest FBI crime statistics before the numbers got revised up.
Now that Trump’s back in office and cracking down on illegal immigration and putting an end to mostly peaceful DEI idiocy, suddenly, 5 yrs. later, we’re finally beginning to move out from under the oppressive shadow that COVID visited upon us all.
Peaceful DEI? You are a complete idiot!
He’s a fvcking idiot. COVID will fade from memory? GTFO
Those of us who saw through and resisted COVID fascism will never forget. Those who perpetrated it will not forget how easy it was to get people to surrender their rights and obey.
You have no rights when you are dead. And over a million Americans are dead as the result of COVID, many because assholes like you were willing to make them cannon fodder for your unwillingness to be inconvenienced.
Get Fauci’s cock out of your mouth, you fucking fascist.
charlie – those people are dead because of COVID and the failure of the public health bureaucratic response to protect them. For three generations after the Spanish Flu pandemic infectious diseases epidemiology experts warned everyone that lockdowns would not only fail to protect the population but would do much more harm than good if they were implemented. Official pandemic response plans at every level of government in every nation on earth warned against drastic regulatory responses to pandemics until COVID hit and panicked government officials went against all that advice. Now the unmistakable evidence is rolling in confirming the official disaster. The takeaway is clear: do not trust officials to follow their own best laid plans during an emergency. If you do, the disaster will be worse. People who refused to be locked down are responsible for very few deaths due to COVID and may have actually mitigated collateral social damage for some, assholes like you notwithstanding!
Fuck you. There is no good reason to believe that the reported death toll was worse because people weren’t fully compliant with all the masking and lockdown shit. And you are neglecting all the death and misery caused by the policies and rules enacted in response. The damage to children alone should be enough to make anyone who was making claims like this several years ago slink away in shame. Yet here you are.
Hang yourself.
Funny how that lie is still being regurgitated. Over 1.2 million? Not. Remember the numbers came back and over 60% of deaths were miscounted as Covid? But of course when you pay folks more for a Covid death versus the flu or whatever comorbidity the person had and actually died from, the box is going to be marked Covid…
Can’t also ignore the fact that the “officials” decided 6′ distancing because it sounded good. So many people still cling to their “blankey” I mean masks today… Yeah they figured out the percentage of sheep pretty quick.
Especially once it was “encouraged” to call people murderers if they questioned anything Authoritarian Covid related.
How do you do, fellow kids… Man, this COVID thing was straight up bananas, amirite?
Oh yeah? Well you never complained about COVID before you hypocrite. Why should anyone listen to you now? Especially because you’re not blaming Democrats for everything bad while praising Republican governors and Trump.

Was there a drunk in that movie? The guy panhandling on Main Street?
Gosh, it’s almost as if it was a terrible, criminally destructive thing to attempt to shut down society and control people using fear and violence. It’s nice that more people are willing to acknowledge this, but I still think there are a lot of people who need to be punished for all of the death and destruction they caused. I’m less and less optimistic that anything will happen on that front. But I literally want heads to roll.

Yes, crime and murder rates have begun to go down, but I’m not sure how Reason defines “down” because according to Reason, all through the last 10 years, crime was already down… so that suggests that crime rates were uh… doing something other than going down while Reason suggested that’s all they were doing, while ignoring the FBI data is spotty at best and doesn’t even collect crime data from such mostly peaceful places as California and New York. But anyhoo…
So the NYT did a podcast where they literally admitted that Trump is pretty much directly responsible for the dramatic drop in fentanyl deaths and drug trafficking coming from down Mexico Way.
“Surprising result” indeed.
New York City publishes detailed crime statistics on the internet. If the FBI isn’t collecting it it isn’t NYC’s fault.

Every politician that signed off on Cares Act(s) bills or executive orders should be disqualified from holding office. And should be looking at serious jail time for all the civil right abuses they authorized.

Yea, we said the same thing about 9/11. And then promptly rolled over for Islam and opened our borders to millions of literal criminals and bad guys who want to do America harm.
It is, after all, a religion of peace.
Why do you think the Biden crime family made a few million here and there? How about all that farmland by the military bases and a couple of energy companies… People accuse Trump of trying to enrich himself while he losses half his wealth. It’s amazing the sheeple sucking up the projections and believing them. There was a few very angry peeps after Trump took office the first term since he ripped up some big big checks Obama had promised. Biden of course quickly enriched the benefactors in 2021 and seems to have provided good return to those who invested in him.
an estimated 1.2 million COVID deaths
Bullshit.
Deaths WITH Covid (maybe). Or more accurately “deaths with associated positive PCR tests for SARS-CoV2 (covid is the illness, not the virus).
And it’s funny that my spellcheck still doesn’t recognize “Covid” as a word.
Not bullshit. There are over a million Americans who are dead today who would be alive were it not for COVID.
GFY you gaslighting simpleton. Are you so stupid you believe this, or so stupid you think we are stupid enough to believe that?
He’s probably among the leftwing idiots who, in the summer of 2020, thought that 10% of Americans were already dead.
Many of us died many times!
I can’t believe people are still trotting out this nonsense. At the very least the numbers are highly questionable. Between the oversensitive PCR test, the conflation of died of and died with, and the age and health of most of the people who died, it is very unlikely that that many people would be alive today if not for covid.
False.
We have repeatedly pointed out here the problems with the crime statistics over the last few years.
NYPD just reported the lowest homicide rate since official records have been kept for the first five months of the year. There are no problems with any of those statistics other than the fact that they only started keeping records in the early 1960s. Other research indicates that the homicide rates were lower during WW2. You have to go back that far.
You never stop lying, do you shithead?
society can’t just be turned off and on again without courting disaster
And millions of us were screaming that, and getting insulted, fired, deplatformed, arrested, and even physically assaulted for our trouble.
And a million of you died because of your unwillingness to be inconvenienced.
Kill yourself. You dumb nazi faggot.
“If history is any guide, the pandemic will quickly fade from the collective memory. ”
I’m not in the collective. I’ll remember this tyrannical period for a long, long, long, long time.
It permanently affected my relationships with others in my community. I guess I should have realized sooner that if you scratch a “progressive”, you find an authoritarian inside.
I have friends I may never speak to again because they enthusiastically supported this shit. I was ready to lose my job on principle if they tried to force me to get vaccinated. I will never forget.
Why would I ever want to speak to a COVID disinformationist, i.e. liar?
Because you are one?
Or, to be fair, you might not be a liar. You might just be a sucker or an idiot.
All 3 in one most likely.
All because of government.
Maybe government needs more testing.

a worthy topic of debate.
None of that is possible in America. Just look at the commentariat.
Governments’ massive emergency expansion of the welfare state seemingly did little to ease the pain.
On the bright side – the ungodly trillions in debt that we incurred – undebated even, in particular, with the commentariat here – will be the gift that keeps on giving. The pandemic syphilis America deserves.
In the US, homicides jumped from 16,964 in 2019 to 22,510 in 2020.
In Canada, homicides jumped from 691 in 2019 to 765 in 2020.
In the US, deaths from COVID-19 went from 0 in 2019 to 385,676 in 2020.
In Canada, deaths from COVID-19 went from 0 in 2019 to 15,799 in 2020.
The US population in 2020 was 331,489,221. Canada’s population was estimated at 38,005,238. The US population was 8.7x that of Canada but the COVID deaths were 24.4x that of Canada. In 2021, COVID deaths decreased in Canada but increased in the US And a major reason for this huge difference was disinformation coming from Trump, his supporters, and professional disinformationists like Bhattacharya, aided by amateurs like the many anonymous commenter here on this site. Hundreds of thousands of lives would have been saved in the US had the US done what Canada did.
And the “getting worse” wasn’t primarily violent crime, it was an out of control pandemic enabled by those who would rather kill innocents than be inconvenienced.
Idiot..
I post actual numbers and you call ME the idiot.
It’s funny you forgot about 2021 , when Biden was in charge.
You are too lazy to have read my comment. Typical MAGA.
You’re stupid enough to write for Reason.
If you don’t move to Canada, we will hunt you down and kill you.
Seems fair.
Sorry but this is lies. Deaths were virtually the same in 2021, especially Canada. When an incredibly high percentage of the public was vaccinated. Delta was the worst and the people with comorbidity who were dying had their Covid box checked. I personally know a couple of people who protested the death certificate for their deceased parent who died of stage 4 cancer being shown as a covid death…

Then how, tell us, did the forces of good dismiss the Evil Orange Beast from the White House, and deliver us our righteous savior, and his little brown cackling sidekick? How did we effectively increase the federal budget by $2 trillion? How did we condition more than half the citizens to renounce liberty and learn to cling to Big Brother, Sister, and Trans-beast? Covid and many more of the last few years of DNC policies were predicted in Earth2100. The movie suggests the crisis events were caused by climate change. Oddly in the years to follow it was the DNC who created the crisis shown in the movie. All of the perps are even in that film, easy to figure them out when you watch it.
