Brickbat: For the Birds

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Joseph Benza III faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of deprivation of rights under color of law for beating a man who gave him the finger. According to court documents, Benza abandoned a domestic disturbance call when he saw Emmett Brock flip him off. He followed Brock's car for 1.8 miles, reaching speeds over 50 mph, without ever attempting to stop him. During that time, Benza called another officer saying the driver had flipped him off and that he planned to use force against him. When Brock pulled into a 7-Eleven parking lot, Benza approached and said he'd just stopped him. When Brock said he hadn't been stopped, Benza threw him to the ground and repeatedly punched him. Brock was charged with three felonies and, as a result, he lost his job as a teacher; the charges were later dropped when the Los Angeles Times posted video of the encounter. Several sergeants directed Benza not to include the real reason he stopped Brock in his incident report. A sheriff's office investigation previously cleared Benza of violating policy in the incident, but a spokesman now says there will be a new administrative investigation. It isn't clear if any of the other deputies mentioned in court filings face charges. The sheriff's office spokesman said other employees could potentially face discipline after it concludes a new investigation.

The official motto of the LAPD is "To Protect and to Serve" leaving open the question, "To protect who and to serve what?" I wonder if the police officers union has a motto.
More like "to protect and serve" who?
"Our own interests, and don't you forget it, peon."
The guy may have lost his job ,but, I'm thinking with the payout he'll get he should be fine.
he lost his job as a teacher
Y'know what, I'm OK with it.
Brock had left his high school teaching job early and was driving to a therapy appointment
Y'know what, I'm Super OK with it.
During that time, Benza called another officer saying the driver had flipped him off and that he planned to use force against him.
LET'S GO TO THE SOURCE, KIDS!
"At one point, prosecutors said, Benza called another deputy and told him he planned to stop someone who’d flipped him off."
Weird omission, Chaz.
Meanwhile, Brock — unnerved and fearing he was being followed by someone impersonating a police officer
Hence the therapy.
Since the encounter that upended his life, Brock has formally been found innocent
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the LA Slimes. JoUrNaLiSm!!!!
Though he never returned to his teaching job
WIN!!!
He’s working as a youth engagement specialist at a homeless shelter.
Yea, that tracks. Good preying grounds for that type.
You do know that the Pigs in Blue are a much bigger danger to your kids than teachers those School Resource Officers are very "Hands On". And it's pretty shitty to slander this poor guy just cause you wanna suck off the boys in blue I'm sure you can still pull a Maegan Hall without dropping bullshit accusations on an innocent man.
I didn't accuse him of anything other than what he self-confessed.
And I said nothing about the cops or their conduct whatsoever.
You're just a troll, copsucker.
What did I say about the cops in this article?
Not. One. Word.
What A Dick. But that is why you are here.
Harsh. Exactly what offended you by anything I said?
And there's predictable ol' AT.
Citizens are just unrealized skells.
Pedophile skells, in this case.
Somebody flipped me off! I need backup!
LA law enforcement is slow in recognizing that things get video recorded.
The error is that he got on the force in the first place, right.
Grownups don't start that habit of beating up those who disagree, that is something observable even in high school Everyone here knows those guys in high school.
Low pay for police officers results in recruitment of people who want to get paid to be bullies or who are attracted to graft opportunities. Until just a few years ago, the starting salary at NYPD was in the low 40s. Good luck trying to live on that in NYC.
You'll have to lie better than that to convince anyone that good cops would sprout like weeds if only the pay was better.
They’re paid very well where I live. LE jobs in my county are sought after, and there’s a waiting list. Same with teachers and firefighters.
What? People are stupid and petty and emotional and violent and clannish and greedy and stupid?
Are we pretending to be shocked?
I don't think this is one of those "shocked" Brickbat snippets. Sometimes very bad law enforcement officers are actually punished. Although it seems to me that, since Floyd (BF = Before Floyd; AF = After Floyd) more and more bad police officers are being held accountable for the crimes they commit under color of authority; it's possible that officers' crimes are simply getting more publicity After Floyd. On balance, I think that the unholy bed-partner relationship between corrupt city officials and powerful police officer unions that used to result in fake internal affairs investigations, dropped district attorney charges and gullible jury exonerations is undergoing a sea-change due to increasing public skepticism even in Big Blue cities.
"It isn't clear if any of the other deputies mentioned in court filings face charges."
When federal prosecutors really want somebody they'll charge obstruction of justice for acts like ordering a false report written.
