England's Home Secretary Yvette Cooper plans to "crack down on those pushing harmful and hateful beliefs and violence" in the aftermath of riots that followed the stabbing deaths of three girls in Southport. Almost 500 people have been charged so far in connection with the riots, and while many are charged with violent crimes or property damage, some have been charged with making offensive statements or posting material the government says could stir up racial hatred.

Actually, yes. I think that was it. Like during the 50s, when the beats were writing poetry and getting them banned for saying pigfucker in front of Jesus or whatever. The religious and conservative scolds still had some sway then.

But then the free speech movement. Country Joe an the Fish would do the fish cheer before concerts. That was 55-60 years ago.

So, somewhere between 60 years ago and now the "left" morphed from liberal free speech advocates to miserable, progressive puritans. From personal experience, Berkeley was miserably progressive by the 80s, you could say anything you wanted, be as weird as you wanted, as long as you were their kind of weird, otherwise you'd be run off campus by the mob.

Late 80s started the PC trend, which caused a late 90s backlash before progressive political correctness came back in the teens. The first politically correct era was definitely anti-free-speech, so I'd guess between 1955 and 1985 was when it changed.

Honestly, I don't think it was "morphed" either. I think the progressives were still progressiving earlier, they just gained in power as they took over hollywood, academia, and the press over the second half of the 20th century. Then they crowded out and shouted down the liberals and the free speech advocates hiding behind the "liberal" name while being the least liberal people of all.
