Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (Chris Emil JanßEn/Zuma Press/Newscom)

No more! Earlier this week, some 3,500 bombs that were meant to be delivered to Israel did not actually make it there. President Joe Biden, long a major arms supplier to Israel, decided that the best way to make his opposition to the Rafah invasion known would be to temporarily stem the flow of weapons.

Biden also "said on Wednesday that he would also block the delivery of artillery shells that could be fired into the urban neighborhoods of Rafah," per The New York Times. Note that the Biden administration is not pausing all arms shipments, but rather trying to exert specific pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to rethink the Rafah offensive.

"Israel…took control of the Gaza side of a key border crossing to Egypt on Tuesday, securing a strategic corridor as negotiators met in Cairo for talks on a truce and hostage releases," reported The Wall Street Journal. "The seizure of the crossing closed a critical gateway for humanitarian assistance for Palestinians, prompting the U.S. to renew calls to reopen the gate."

Bear in mind, also, that the Rafah invasion was not merely to attempt to starve the remaining Gazans in the region through blocking humanitarian aid; an estimated 5,000–8,000 Hamas fighters are believed to be hiding in that city in southern Gaza. The Israeli offensive, which has been smaller in scope than originally thought, aims to stamp them out. It remains to be seen whether the Biden administration exerting pressure in this way will affect Israeli military actions—or how the Rafah offensive is perceived on a national stage.

Many Republicans in Congress reacted unfavorably to this unilateral action by the Biden administration. "It wasn't the Israelis that started this conflict. And I'm just very concerned that we do not try to micromanage Israel's right to defend itself against the terrorist group backed by Iran," said Sen. Susan Collins (R–Maine) at an Appropriations subcommittee hearing yesterday.

Of course, the Biden administration is really just interested in using leverage. Once a humanitarian plan for getting refugees safely out of Rafah is communicated by Israel, the White House says the weapons shipments will likely resume.

Climate Guy Gavin: California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who continues to very convincingly swear that he's not running for president, seems to be eyeing the climate-concerned demographic of voters.

All the way back in 2020, when the grid faced blackouts and the state was roiled by wildfires, Newsom pinned blame on climate change, and majorly misrepresented his prioritization of wildfire management strategies like controlled burns.

During a visit to China last year, Newsom made headlines over a glitzy new partnership between California and Shanghai, which Newsom's press office said are "teaming up to fight the climate crisis by cleaning up ports and reducing emissions from the transportation sector." (Whether this has any real effect on emissions coming out of Shanghai seems beside the point.) During an audience with Pope Francis scheduled for next week, Newsom is expected to emphasize how "global temperatures [are] hurtling towards alarming new heights." This is his talk track, possibly responding to the fact that a far greater percentage of California's likely voters tell pollsters that "stricter environmental laws and regulations are worth the cost" compared with a decade ago.

"A key part of his strategy has been to ascribe high gas prices and utility bills to corporate greed and gouging while beating back proposals that he believes go too far like Proposition 30, which would have raised taxes on the rich in 2022 to funnel money to electric vehicles," reported Politico. Phrased differently: Newsom does not want to alienate his French Laundry dining companions, and other rich donors who may be considering fleeing the high-tax state, but is very much trying to position himself as someone who takes climate change seriously.

Something to watch in the event that Newsom gets elevated out of his Biden-surrogate position and into the presidential campaign spotlight at any point, whether by the cruel tricks of nature or simple patience.

Scenes from New York:

Over the weekend, a cruise ship appears to have accidentally killed and dragged a 44-foot endangered Sei whale through the East River. Upon being discovered, the whale was towed to New Jersey for a necropsy.

More whales have been living in the waters surrounding New York City for the last few years—I saw whales from Queens' Rockaway Beach two days ago, which is not totally uncommon here—and meeting all kinds of disturbing fates as a result.

"The increase in beached whales could be an indication that the whale population as a whole is growing. Or, less optimistically, rising water temperatures could be changing the hunting and migration patterns of whales, pushing them into areas where they're more likely to become injured by human activity," reported Curbed last year.

  • Lots of people are criticizing Ann Coulter's blatant bigotry toward Vivek Ramaswamy during a recent podcast appearance in which Coulter went on Ramaswamy's show. What they're missing, though, is that Coulter's entire argument is that "the core around which the nation's values are formed is the WASP" (wrong!) and that she thinks we need more selective criteria as to which immigrants we let in—ignoring the contradiction present where Ramaswamy himself fits the criteria she describes, yet is still discriminated against by Coulter.

.@AnnCoulter told me flat-out to my face that she couldn't vote for me "because you're an Indian," even though she agreed with me more than most other candidates. Do they turn back the throttle on the legal charades before or after the election? I get the impression that they are trying to blow up the Daniels case and are way more concerned with embarassing Trump than getting convictions on non-crimes. I heard that the bombs embargoed were precision guided JDAMs, which would seem to be able to cause less collateral damage than dumb bombs.

      1. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

Just to nitpick but the JDAM actually isn't a bomb, but the guidance system for a series of generally smaller yield bombs. So, yes, denying the guidance system for low yield bombs (the guidance system was specifically designed for smaller bombs to be utilized in urban centers to decrease collateral damage) is really defeating the purpose.

Can even add abortion on demand until slightly after birth. 60%+ support regulations after first trimester.

        1. HorseConch   1 year ago

They do a way better job of messaging it than the R's that are afraid to touch it or you would be hugely correct. I would venture to guess that the number of people that support full-term abortion on demand is way smaller than the 30 something percent that poll suggests. The republicans seem like they use it as an excuse to lose instead of a reason to win.

          1. JesseAz   1 year ago

Mostly it is because the media helps push the narratives. Even Reason does. See the ENB story on Arizona. She posted about the courts correctly establishing the law was valid post Roe. The law was from the 1860s. She felt this was deserving and article to push the narrative. She had had no article on Arizona repealing the law. Arizona is now set at the 20 weeks mark. But ENB won't advertise that.

          2. Vernon Depner   1 year ago

The number of people that support full-term abortion on demand is zero. That's a bugaboo invented by the anti-abortion extremists.

            1. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

I doubt it's zero, there are even people who support post delivery abortions and are on record as such.

            2. Jefferson Paul   1 year ago

So if you think no one wants full-term abortion on demand, and it doesn’t happen, would you be against a ban on it?

I’m pro-choice to a point. That point is definitely earlier than full term. I honestly don’t have an answer as to what that point is that abortions should no longer be permitted. I’ve gone back and forth on the issue, from heartbeat, to brain activity, to viability, etc. Right now, I’d agree with viability as the bodily autonomy argument is the strongest, in my opinion. But that also means, if the fetus is viable outside of the womb, and the woman wants to terminate her pregnancy, she can have the fetus removed, but not killed. If the fetus is to come out regardless, then why kill it first, instead of just letting it live and some other family can adopt it?)

I’m willing to be convinced by a great, sound argument as to what that point should be, though, even if it’s no abortion/limited abortion/etc.

              1. Vernon Depner   1 year ago

Biden also knows that he has the luxury of a MSM which will never question, correct or "fact check" any claim he makes in any context. At most, the tape of him in 1988 claiming to have been on a full academic scholarship in Law School and graduating near the top of his class might get rated "needs further context" since there were no full scholarships given at his school and he finished in the bottom 20% of his graduating class from Syracuse Law.

Meanwhile, anyone opposing him gets routinely rated "pants on fire" or 3-4 Pinoccios for making obvious jokes, or possibly for asking a rhetorical question in public.

Good thing this is (D)ifferent from the first Trump impeachment. Wonder how embarrassing those Sullum stories look now.

    1. JesseAz   1 year ago

Bear in mind, also, that the Rafah invasion was not merely to attempt to starve the remaining Gazans in the region through blocking humanitarian aid; an estimated 5,000–8,000 Hamas fighters are believed to be hiding in that city in southern Gaza.

Of course Hamas blowing up the gate Israel was using to provide aid has nothing to do with this narrative.

In what wars are an opponent responsible for feeding the citizens of the state that attacked them?

      1. Sometimes a Great Notion   1 year ago

Afghanistan? But I wouldn't use responsible so much as tactical on the political level.

Israel is free to prosecute the war however they want as far as I'm concerned but then again they should be prepared for blowback - kind of like how Japanese conduct* in China caused disgust in Americans, ending oil sales... And when Israel has other goals like normalizing relations with SA/Gulf states, in an effort to isolate Iran; it may be in their best interest to show Palestinians mercy.

*big difference being Japan was the aggressor.

Trump? One of his signature policies is the Abraham Accords. And by extension Israel and SA (and the others signatories). So yes, there are broader implications to Israel and how they conduct themselves outside of just destroying Hamas.

        2. TheReEncogitationer   1 year ago

          1. Square = Circle   1 year ago

Japan, Germany, and Italy are the biggest argument ever against “blowback”.

Not really. The Marshal Plan is pretty much the exact opposite of what Israel is doing to the Palestinians.

The Allies, really the US primarily, occupied all three of those countries with overwhelming military force, and after de-Nazification largely left them alone to manage their affairs sans a domestic military with their security provided for entirely by the US. By the 1960s, not even 20 years after the war had ended, Germany and Japan had become two of our closest allies.

Israel is carefully avoiding putting itself into a situation in which it has to acknowledge that its army is an occupying force.

            1. Bertram Guilfoyle   1 year ago

If the allies had implemented the Marshall plan *before* forcing Germany to surrender, I wonder if Germany would have become an ally?

I don’t even have to change any dictionary definitions:

        compromised – adj.
1: made vulnerable (as to attack or misuse) by unauthorized access, revelation, or exposure
2: impaired or diminished in function : weakened, damaged, or flawed
3: exposed to suspicion or discredit : revealed as or suspected of being disreputable, untrustworthy, etc.

        Example sentences:

Some people that are so compromised, every little detail makes a huge impact.
—Amanda Lauren, Forbes, 21 Feb. 2023

And the Persians (and their descendants empires), Alexander, the Romans and the descendants the Byzantines also didn't bother to conquer or colonize Saudi Arabia. And even the majority of the Islamic Caliphates during the rise of Islam, only bothered to control the strip along the Red Sea that contained Mecca and Medina, and left the rest of the peninsula largely alone.

I mean even the Brits and French, when they were dividing up the Ottoman Empire, didn’t even want Saudi Arabia.

        1. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

My post was kind of tongue in cheek. That basically no one throughout history, (not even the Islamic Caliphates of the 7th-12th centuries) ever bothered to conquer or colonize Saudi Arabia, bar a thin strip along the Red Sea. And if it wasn't for oil, no one would care today about the Saudis, except in regards to Mecca (and then only the Muslims).

It's a hair shirt. It's self-flagellation. In some strategic people it is anti-societal and they want to transform the West, but for most climate changers it's just a continuation of the psychological state of guilt, where religion used to take up most of that space. Climate change is still a religion, the strongest one of our time challenged only by transgenderism (but I get some sense that one is fading).

Most people don't fish or farm or directly affect the environment in a unique way so collective guilt is where they stick their guilt.

Or giving into he greenie idiots in the 1990s and killing scientific based forest management that was actually fairly decent at controlling fires and keeping them smaller, slower and cooler when they did occur. And now we have overgrown, overcrowded, often diseases and insect riddled forests that burn way to hot and fast. BTW, the Amerindians were also practicing forest management before Columbus, burning the undergrowth and seedlings, so that the forests were much less crowded and dense than they are today at the time of European colonization. There is no such thing as naturally, unmanaged forests, at least not for the past 20,000 years or so, that humans have occupied the Americas, and 20,000 years ago there were much fewer forests (in the areas not covered by miles of glacier that is, there there was no forests) it was largely cold savannah with scattered clumps of trees along waterways (much like the northern prairie region of Montana, North Dakota and the Canadian Prairie Provinces today), because besides being much colder it was also a lot drier.

            1. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

Also another thing that gets ignored is that since the end of the last glacial period, there is a cyclic pattern of warming and cooling periods. For example, starting around the fourth century BCE, there was a warming period that lasted until around the 3rd century AD, at which time there was a cooling period that lasted till around the late eighth, early ninth century AD, at which time the Earth entered a warming period that lasted until the 14th century AD, at which time we entered a cooling period that lasted until the early 19th century (or possibly the late 18th century). So, following this pattern, were in a predictable warning period for the next three or so centuries. It should be noted that these warming and cooling periods have had major impacts on human civilization, with the growth of major civilizations, especially in the Northern Hemisphere during the warming periods, and then those civilizations either struggling or collapsing during the cooling periods (the archeological records and historical records show the same pattern in Europe, Asia and North America). It’s not mentioned much, but several of the large civilizations were either in decline or already collapsed at the time of Columbus’s voyages, including the Maya, Aztec, Mississippian/Ohioan and Anasazi.

I may have mentioned that phenomena. But I used made up animal. If you want to study the mating behavior of the little studied northern ridge backed, red tailed squirrel, even though it's never been studied or documented, you will have trouble getting funding unless you write the proposal as 'the impacts of climate change on the breeding behavior of the northern ridge backed, red tailed squirrel' even though we don't know what the breeding behavior is, so how can we study how climate change has impacted it?

BLM Global Network files $33 million lawsuit against group helping fund college protests

Aprogressive non-profit that has been shelling out cash to anti-Israel protest groups is being sued by Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation for fraud and withholding more than $33 million in donations, a bombshell lawsuit claims.

Tides Foundation, which has managed hundreds of millions in donations for progressive groups since it was founded in 1976, has “refused to honor its promises and continues to commandeer BLMGNF’s donations,” according to the 285-page lawsuit filed in California Superior Court, Los Angeles County, on Monday.

Instead, Tides doled out an undisclosed amount of donations to a radical BLM breakaway group run by anti-police activist Melina Abdullah — who lost a “frivolous” lawsuit against BLMGNF — according to court papers and an attorney for BLMGNF.

Tides, a Los Angeles and San Francisco-based non-profit, acts as a fiscal sponsor — essentially, a clearing house that collects donations for groups that may not have 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. In addition to BLMGNF and other BLM groups, it manages donations for pro-Palestinian groups that have supported anti-Israel protests across the country.

Billionaire George Soros and his son Alex Soros have funneled nearly $14 million from their Open Society Foundations to Tides, which sponsor activist groups including the pro-Palestinian Adalah Justice Project and others fueling campus protests.

They all produce methane, which is a byproduct of fermentation of cellulose in the rumen. In fact, starch high diets produce less methane than grass based diets in ruminants. So, why aren't the greenies calling for the massive culling of all wild ruminants, but only want to cull domestic livestock, which when raised in North America, using our production systems, contribute insignificantly to climate change, per both the EPA and the NPCC?

    Another Quick Hit to add.

Teens forced out of California school over 'blackface' win in court

Two California teens who were forced to withdraw from an elite Catholic high school over accusations of blackface have been awarded $1 million and tuition reimbursement. A Santa Clara County jury sided with the teens, identified by the initials A.H. and H.H., on two claims concerning breach of oral contract and lack of due process. The boys sued Saint Francis High School in August 2020 after photos circulated of them sporting acne treatment masks.

The plaintiffs initially sought $20 million when they filed suit in Santa Clara County Superior Court, three years after they and a friend - who attended another school and was not included in the lawsuit - snapped a selfie while donning acne treatment masks. In the offending photo, the boys' faces were covered in dark green medication. A photo taken a day earlier revealed that they had tried on white face masks as well.

No, she didn't. She strongly implied that if you're not a WASP, you'll probably never be *President* (Kennedy and Obama notwithstanding), but said nothing about being American. Her rant was as much anti-Catholic as it was anti-Indian or anything else.

Coulter is almost certainly a racist bitch who need to eat a hamburger now and then. But your characterization is at odds with the words I read (I'm shocked...schocked...). Maybe I missed that part, but if it was there surely you could cite it.

Returning to her comment about Ramaswamy, who was born in the U.S. to Indian immigrants, she said: “There is a core national identity that is the identity of the WASP, and that doesn’t mean we can’t take anyone else in—a Sri Lankan, a Japanese, or an Indian—but the core around which the nation’s values are formed is the WASP.”

“We’ve never had a president who didn’t have at least partial English ancestry, never,” Coulter continued. “We’ve only had one Catholic president,” she added, apparently forgetting about either President Joe Biden or John F. Kennedy. “There was only one Catholic signatory to the Declaration of Independence. They were all not only protestants, but pretty much Presbyterian.”

          1. sarcasmic   1 year ago

She has said in the past that only Ivy League graduates like her have a place in politics. Now she’s saying that only white Ivy League graduates have a place in the White House. If politicians represent the people, then she’s saying that only white people who graduated from elite universities can represent the people. If the only people who can represent the people are white, then it follows that only white people are true Americans.

          2. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

Uhm pretty much Presbyterians? Really? Most the southern signatories were Episcopal, with some Baptists. Most the Northern delegates were descendants of the Puritans largely, and while some Puritans identified closely with Scottish Presbyterians, the group labeled Puritans actually didn't identify with any one church (but instead were devout Calvinists) with some Baptists and the odd Quaker. For the most part, during the 17th and 18th century, Presbyterianism was largely a Scottish based religion, with few English followers. In fact, many of the descendants of the Puritans at the end of the 18th century belonged to the Unitarian Church, including John Adams.

            1. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

In fact, the southerners ties to the Episcopal church, or rather the American Anglican Church, was one of the reasons for Clinton’s Southern Strategy when he took over command from Howell. The British felt that the southerners were reluctant rebels, and that they would flock to the British colors (sort of like how the Confederates were sure invading Kentucky and Maryland 80 years later would make those states flock to the Confederates side, and with basically the same outcome).

At least the civil rights and Vietnam war protestors of the 1950s and 60s were willing to suffer real hardship for their cause.

The civil rights protestors, yeah. The Vietnam war protesters were mostly middle and upper middle class college kids who didn’t want to get drafted, or commies looking to destroy the US. VVAW was actually a very small slice of the protest movement back then, but they’re the only ones who really experienced actual hardship, for the most part.

Most of them were really more “end the draft” protesters than war protesters. That’s why they largely died out after the draft ended. Meanwhile, the marxist true believers like SDS and Weather Underground were involved mainly because they saw it as the lever to accomplish the communist revolution. When the protests stopped, that didn’t stop them from committing bombings and other violent acts. They literally wanted to overthrow the US and were completely transparent about their intentions.

Hardly anyone actually suffered any hardship from their activism, the students largely got what they demanded on campus just so the admins could get them to shut up, and the only ones who really saw a negative impact on their life from it was due from addictions from falling in to the movement’s drug culture, not the protests. Hell, a large chunk of them ended up teaching Gen-Xers and Millennials in college.

      1. A Cynical Asshole   1 year ago

The “end the draft” protestors was more who I was thinking of, that and the people who were willing to be firehosed and practiced “passive resistance” techniques, which in hindsight, would apply more to civil rights protestors as opposed to Vietnam War protestors. Probably should have left the Vietnam protestors out since, as you point out, most of them just didn’t want to get drafted (understandable) or commie twats (not understandable).

            "They’re certainly posturing"

It sounds like a strain of weed like Pineapple Express or any other strain of weed that James Franco may've mentioned in Pineapple Express or the name of a dispensary.

I assume there must be some sort of law against serving food, restaurant-style, with cannabis and alcohol products because, otherwise, "steak, weed, and whiskey" sounds like it would go over everywhere about as well as "steak, tobacco, and whiskey".

Students at Ireland’s prestigious Trinity College Dublin (TCD) on Wednesday ended a five-day-long protest against Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza after they said their demands were met by the university leadership.

In a statement posted on its website, the university said that “an agreement was reached” after “successful talks between the university’s senior management and the protestors.”

            1. mtrueman   1 year ago

I don't think the threat of impeachment is as frightening as you do. However threatened Biden feels, it's evident he's more threatened by the campus protestors, whose actions, I believe, are at the root of the halt in arms shipments. Wouldn't you agree?

              1. Bertram Guilfoyle   1 year ago

The campus protestors are about the least "threatening" people you could possibly imagine. Biden is primarily interested in vote pandering.

"the least “threatening” people you could possibly imagine"

People sitting still and refusing to move requires that. A real threat would require actually shooting them.

                      "Such a threat."

You're not following. It's not a threat at all. The key here is that Biden feels threatened, hence his attempt to appease students with the halt of shipments. He feels threatened by the potential loss of votes in the election later this year. You evidently think that this warrants calling in the riot police, something I believe is an over reaction given that the protestors aren't threatening anyone. The over reaction and use of violence against the students is probably a good thing though. It inspires the protestors to be more resolute and signals the desperation of the state.

              1. mtrueman   1 year ago

"That is what a human shield is."

You haven't thought this through. A shield is a person pressed into service to stand between opposing parties to dissuade an attacker. The hostages aren't held between opposing parties but tucked away in obscure places to be used as bargaining chips in future exchanges. I don't know how 7 months of hostilities have passed without you picking up on this. Take a few moments and think for yourself instead of mindlessly parroting what you hear on TV.

                1. Bertram Guilfoyle   1 year ago

This contradicts what you stated above, where you recognized that Israeli bombing risks killing them, which is obviously intended to dissuade the bombing. The fact that the hostages are also used as bargaining chips as well doesn't mean they aren't also human shields.

Becoming a human propaganda poster for hamas has destroyed your brain (which was, admittedly, already severely damaged).

                  1. mtrueman   1 year ago

You still haven't thought this through. Start with the word shield. A shield is placed between that which you wish to protect and those wishing to do harm. Is that the situation we're seeing in Gaza? No, it isn't. The hostages are secreted away from the action to the extent possible. Your commitment to mouthing Israeli propaganda points has been noted many times, but try to think for yourself. I'm happy to help you out when you need it.

"The hostages are secreted away from the action to the extent possible."

This is bullshit, as you know, since you regularly bring up the escaping hostages that were accidentally killed by the IDF.

                    3. mtrueman   1 year ago

You're still not thinking this through. Start with the word shield. To function properly it is to be placed between the attacker and the defender. It won't work otherwise. A shield stored safely away in the basement is not going to be able to fulfill its intended function. It has to be between an attacker and a defender if to serve as a shield. This is not difficult, and you should be able to grasp the idea of a shield. Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus, granted not one of his best works, shows shields in action in the gladiator sequences early in the movie.

If you have any evidence that human shields are being used you simply must present it. Keeping it to yourself is tantamount to complicity in a war crime. First though, please make sure you understand the concept of shield, if you expect to be taken seriously.

Criminal robs a bank. Takes hostages.

                      Why?

To prevent the police from attacking.

No matter WHERE the customer is inside the bank, the hostage is a shield.

                    6. mtrueman   1 year ago

"Do you know WHY they hold hostages?"

To exchange for Palestinian political prisoners held in Israel. A few years back Netanyahu established an exchange rate of 1000 Palestinian political prisoners for one Jewish Israeli prisoner of war. At such tempting terms, it's surprising that Palestinians haven't nabbed more hostages.

                      "the hostage is a shield."

You're getting confused. The fighting in Gaza is not cops vs. robbers. The hostages held in Palestine are valuable bargaining chips. Just think of it. Each hostage is worth up to 1000 Palestinian prisoners. They are a valuable resource, not to be wasted on the assumption that they will protect Palestinians by dissuading the Israeli military from firing. The Israelis have already shown that they have no compunction of shooting at and killing Israeli hostages, or Palestinian civilians. Even conservative press in Israel has acknowledged this. I urge you to spend a little time meditating on all this rather than simply and reflexively falling back on Israeli propaganda.

                    7. damikesc   1 year ago

If they were not shields, they’d not be terribly valuable bargaining chips.

Kennedy then shared the results of his campaign's own taking of America's electoral pulse:
This is why we did our own poll with Zogby — the largest and most accurate poll of this election cycle. We had Zogby ask about head-to-head matchups. (1) You versus President Biden. (2) Me versus President Biden. (3) Me versus you. The results? You beat President Biden handily. I crush him as well, by even more. And against each other, I beat you in a nail-biter.
In a three-way, you are ahead but I’m coming up strong. Two new polls (CNN and Quinnipiac) have me above the 15% debate threshold. Another (Activote) has me at 26% among young voters. And you and I are tied among America’s 70 million Independents.
It wasn't all flattery: Kennedy also slid in a shot at Trump's policies, saying many of the former president's supporters are backing Kennedy this time, saying they're "upset that you blew up the deficit, shut down their businesses during Covid, and filled your administration with swamp creatures."
Citing a previous Trump statement that he'd be open to sparring with Kennedy if his poll numbers were decent, Kennedy said he meets that threshold, saying "I’m the only presidential candidate in history who has polled ahead of both major party candidates in head-to-head races."
While the Libertarian Party has not yet issued a statement, Kennedy said he checked with party leadership and said "they are game" for a showdown. For now, Kennedy is scheduled to speak on Friday, May 24; Trump, on Saturday, May 25.
Meanwhile, Libertarian Party activist, podcaster and comedian Dave Smith -- who'd been regarded by many as an ideal 2024 flag-bearer before he opted against running -- offered to dive in on the action: link

Is this like the Futurama episode with the mind controlling parasites (not the ones that Fry got from eating a truck stop egg salad sandwich) that died of starvation when it attached to Fry’s head? Never mind, should have clicked the link first.

So Liz, if US founding values weren't WASP in nature what were they? Saharan shamanistic values? Mongolian? Please enlighten us as to which progressive multi-culti delusion you think is the basis of the founding US documents and principles.

    1. mtrueman   1 year ago

"if US founding values weren’t WASP in nature what were they"

The political economist Adam Smith is as good an embodiment of American founding values as anyone. He was a Scot, ie Celtic, not Anglo Saxon. He was also a closet atheist, and rebelled against the hypocrisy of protestantism.

Try telling that to a Scottish or Irish or Welsh person. It's really not the same thing. Scotch-Irish Appalacians, for example, are decidedly not WASPs.

          1. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

The funny thing is, about half of all Scots-Irish were actually English. The phrase came to cover anyone who was part of the Reaver culture along the border (they fought each other and married each other, sometimes at the same time) who settled on the Ulster Plantation. Basically, the King of England got tired of their insistent fighting and raiding each other, put an end to it and then they had very few other options to earn a living so many, from both sides of the border, relocated to the new Ulster Plantation, and when that failed, many immigrated to America as indentured servants. My family, the Dunns, actually came from the English side of the border, but are still part of the Scots-Irish community. If you are Scots-Irish, there's actually lists to show which side of the border your family actually came from. Culturally, the border communities had more in common with each other than with Scotland or England at large, respectively. Back to the days of the Scottish Marches, this region was an area of constant raiding, trading and intermarriage. Hell, back to the Romans, if you want to get technical. Part of this was because until the rise of nationalism in the early modern period, borders were far more amorphous things than hard boundaries.

            1. Vernon Depner   1 year ago

The Scots-Irish ethnicity is mostly mythical. Most of the ancestors of people who call themselves that actually came to America directly from Northern England, with no stop in Ireland.

The political economist Adam Smith is as good an embodiment of American founding values as anyone.

If the Constitution and Declaration had been based completely off of "The Wealth of Nations," you might be correct.

He was also a closet atheist, and rebelled against the hypocrisy of protestantism.

Several of the colonies and states had established churches, or provided state funding to them, as late as the 1820s. All of them were protestant, and where they didn't exist, it was mainly because of large numbers of other Christian denominations, either Catholic or Protestant. Some even had laws that required legislators to be practicing Christians.

This hardly proves your contention that Adam Smith embodies American founding values.

        1. mtrueman   1 year ago

"If the Constitution and Declaration had been based completely off of “The Wealth of Nations,” you might be correct."

That's a very generous and unexpected concession on your part.

"This hardly proves your contention that Adam Smith embodies American founding values."

I notice you haven't nominated anyone to take his place. So, for the time being, Adam Smith it is. Your white anglo saxon protestant whinging can safely be ignored.

That’s a very generous and unexpected concession on your part.

As is yours that you're incorrect.

I notice you haven’t nominated anyone to take his place.

Because your argument is a false construct from the start. There's no need to provide a replacement for something that doesn't exist.

So, for the time being, Adam Smith it is.

Nah. Nothing marxists assert should be taken at face value.

Your white anglo saxon protestant whinging can safely be ignored.

LOL, I'm not a Christian, you silly marxist faggot. But I do understand why you have to indulge in the same old dialectic. How boring and predictable.

            1. mtrueman   1 year ago

I'm about to give up on you. It's OK if you don't have an argument. I never really expected one. I see much foolish red baiting, and little else. And you are rude, too.

              "LOL, I’m not a Christian"

It's nothing to boast about. Posing as a nihilistic cynic doesn't suit you, though.

Translation: “My original pejorative didn’t take, so now I’m going to try this one to put you on the defense.” Marxist framing would be hilarious if it wasn’t so predictable.

They were White Anglo-Saxon Deistic types, but their values are transferrable to anyone willing to embrace them, regardless of “race” or nationality.

While Vivek is not Libertarian, Ann Coulter is way further away from that mark. Ann’s a genuinely racist bitch for dissing Vivek for being Indian and besides she needs to go use dipilatory on her Adam’s Apple.

They were WASP in origin, but that’s not the same thing. One of the great virtues of such values is that they can be successfully employed by people of any origin.

      1. mad.casual   1 year ago

        Or at least ideally anyway.

    4. soldiermedic76   1 year ago

I would argue that many of the principles actually predates the reformation and have roots in medieval English Common Law, and some even in Roman jurisprudence (especially as collected by Justinian in the 6th century CE). While the framers were largely WASP, many of the ideals and liberties actually have surprisingly ancient roots. The Enlightenment did distill and better flesh these ideals out, but they pre-date the enlightenment in many instances. Take for example bearing arms and owning property. These were considered back to Greco-Roman times, to be liberties that separated free men/citizens from non-citizen and slaves. Considering it was also a fairly common idea in Gaelic, German, Slavic and even Persian and Indian cultures, I'm thinking it quite possibly was an idea that originated in the original Indo-European or even proto-Indo-European peoples. Freedom of speech, press and religion do appear to be a later, enlightenment ideal. The legal codes actually have roots in Anglo-Saxon and Norse cultural traditions that mostly became more codified starting in the latter 12th century CE (the judicial system of England during the High Middle Ages was actually fairly complex and developed) plus some Roman aspects. The Republic, with separation of powers, a Senate, a separate Judicial system, etc have roots in both English Common Law and the Roman Republic. So, overall, Anglo-Saxon, with strong influence by the Roman Republic, and Norman-Anglo society, and Norse cultures, largely before the Protestant Reformation.
