Border Bill Blows Up

Under the influence of former President Donald Trump, many elected Republicans are denouncing the bipartisan border security bill. The bill, the details of which were released on Monday, includes $20 billion in new funding for Border Patrol agents, officials to process asylum claims, and other resources for the Department of Homeland Security. Negotiated by Sen. James Lankford (R–Okla.) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D–N.Y.), the bill would also dole out significant foreign aid to Israel ($14 billion) and Ukraine ($60 billion).

There's just one problem: Trump hates it.

"Only a fool, or a Radical Left Democrat, would vote for this horrendous Border Bill, which only gives Shutdown Authority after 5000 Encounters a day, when we already have the right to CLOSE THE BORDER NOW, which must be done," the former president wrote on Truth Social. Trump's comment refers to a provision of the bill that would allow the federal government to police immigration more strictly—i.e., by rejecting most asylum claimants—once illegal border-crossings exceed a threshold of 5,000 per day.

Denunciation of the bill has been widespread. Rep. Chip Roy (R–Texas) called it a trap "designed by Democrats to boost Biden against Trump." Sen. Ted Cruz (R–Texas) said the bill was a "monstrosity." Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said it showed contempt for the American taxpayers.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell remains staunchly committed to funding Ukraine's defense against Russia, and was supportive of Lankford's efforts. But after reading the room, he decided to come out against the bill after all.

NEWS — McConnell recommended to GOP senators behind closed doors that they BLOCK the border bill on Wednesday, per multiple sources, bc it's clear that most Republicans are preparing to vote no — either because they oppose the bill or want more time. w/ @bresreports @JakeSherman

— Andrew Desiderio (@AndrewDesiderio) February 6, 2024

House Speaker Mike Johnson, a close ally of Trump, has declared the bill dead on arrival. With Trump currently leading President Joe Biden in the polls, Team MAGA sees no reason to give the incumbent any kind of political win.

Speaking of 2024 polling, things continue to look very bad for Biden. Trump is beating the incumbent by five points in a general election matchup, according to NBC News polling. In a recent video, journalist Steve Kornacki pointed out that Biden's job approval rating is far lower than all other recent presidents who sought re-election. On the question of the economy, voters back Trump 22 points over Biden.

WATCH: President Biden trails former President Trump by 22 points on handling of the economy in the latest NBC News national poll, says @SteveKornacki.@kwelkernbc: "The economy is so striking because jobs are up, inflation is down. Voters aren't giving [Biden] credit for that." pic.twitter.com/KzyB7S4rzR

— Meet the Press (@MeetThePress) February 4, 2024

Most voters—including most Democrats—think Biden is too old to be president. Given widespread dissatisfaction with Biden, even in his own party, one might have expected Democrats, at the very least, to engage in a competitive primary and see if a more formidable general election candidate emerges. But no; the attitude of the Democratic Party, and its top media surrogates is that Biden will be the candidate regardless.

This means that the 2024 matchup is very likely to be Trump vs. Biden—a sequel that absolutely no one is asking for.

The Biden White House pressured Amazon to take action against books with contrarian COVID-19 messages. That's according to Rep. Jim Jordan (R–Ohio), who announced the "Amazon Files" on X (formerly Twitter). Jordan obtained emails that show White House officials haranguing the online sales giant over "high levels of propaganda and misinformation and disinformation" on the platform.

A week later, on March 9, 2021, Amazon met with the White House.

Internal Amazon documents reveal Amazon's "top talking points" going into the meeting.

One of the key questions was whether the Biden White House wanted books banned or just buried deep in the search results: pic.twitter.com/wnWj9eCyJf

— Rep. Jim Jordan (@Jim_Jordan) February 5, 2024

Amazon pushed back but agreed to meet with White House officials to obtain clarity on whether Team Biden wanted book titles removed outright. Subsequently, Amazon worked to reduce the visibility of books that were deemed conspiratorial by government health advisors.

Sadly, this is nothing new, and mirrors the behaviors of Twitter and Meta in response to similar pressure from government censors. And it wasn't just the White House—the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the FBI, and many other government organizations communicated with social media companies for the purposes of discouraging disapproved content.

The border between Ukraine and Russia is very very good, the border between the US and Canada is also good and had to remain closed after Covid for a very long time because Canadian plague rats.

The southern border however is evil and racist and should not exist.

      1. Minadin   1 year ago

I mean, I think that there's more than one problem with the bill, and the top one for me is that it shouldn't be needed at all. But the extra $75 billion in foreign aid, $20 billion for the 'border' (how much was the stupid wall supposed to cost again?) and another $25 billion in miscellaneous spending, for a $120 billion price tag total are all good reasons too. ($120 billion is approximately $815 per taxpayer)

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   1 year ago

And the center-right is bitching about GOP resistance to it because they claim that the asylum law has to change to solve the issue.

Once again, they happily take 10% of what the GOP voters want, in exchange for 90% of what the Dems want. And let's not get it twisted, the real, actual reason the center-right is spitting mad that the bill won't get through the House is because they believe maintaining Ukraine's sovereignty takes precedence over anything else, no matter the issue. They've even stated as much. And if the bill dies, more funding for the Ukraine furnace fire dies, too.

          1. Nazi-Chipping Warlock   1 year ago

Can they really be called "center right"? They seem more like "extreme Ukraine partisans" which is more of a left thing in the current zeitgeist, but also, I don't think many regular Americans who would be considered "right" care about Ukraine even a tenth as much as the border.

I dunno. "Center right" just feels like it makes them sound mainstream, and I don't think they are. It's just the GOPe cunts.

            1. InsaneTrollLogic   1 year ago

I'll agree. "Center right" isn't really quite what these GOPe folks are all about. We have another name for them in Illinois, the Democrats in power and their GOPe sycophants: The Combine.

              https://chicagoreader.com/blogs/further-thoughts-on-john-kass/

He scolds those guys for operating as a cabal that crosses enemy lines. “What do we call this relationship, again?” he wrote in 2008. “This Illinois custom of quiet sharing of power across party lines for the benefit of a fat connected few?” He went on to say that former U.S. senator Peter Fitzgerald (a Kass favorite) provided him with the answer.

“The Illinois Combine,” Fitzgerald said. “The bipartisan Illinois political combine.”

Kass continued, “I’ve been calling it The Combine for about a decade but hardly see it referenced elsewhere, and I don’t want others to think I’m hoarding the Illinois Combine all to myself. Today, I’m sharing. I’m inviting other colleagues—political writers, editors, broadcasters and any combine suck up professors — to use ‘Illinois Combine’ particularly if they’re having difficulty explaining how two parties can be as one when there’s money on the table.”

Peter Fitzgerald was one of the better US Senators we had in this state, and he got stabbed in the back by the GOPe, part of The Combine.

I heard Mark Levin go into some of the provisions of the bill. It effectively opens the border further and will provide citizenship to over 11 million illegals over a 7 year period. The whole thing is a huge disaster and should be fought bitterly.

Any Republican that votes for it should be run out of office.

          1. damikesc   1 year ago

I like that IF we hit those "thresholds" listed in the bill --- the President can still opt to do nothing.

        2. Gaear Grimsrud   1 year ago

Trump's quote above explains exactly what is wrong with this bill and I mentioned it yesterday. Whoever wins the election in November, nobody believes that Biden will actually serve an entire 2nd term. This bill codifies the current open border scheme and will prevent future presidents, whoever they may be, from utilizing the tools currently available to manage the border. You don't have to like Trump to oppose this bill for that reason alone.

          1. InsaneTrollLogic   1 year ago

It's even worse than just restricting future Presidents, it also apparently restricts what states like Texas can do too. (I linked the story below, but I'll repeat it here.)

            https://www.thecentersquare.com/texas/article_98d4b954-c4f7-11ee-af6c-87de153afc32.html

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and other leaders in Texas strongly oppose a Senate border bill introduced by Democrats, arguing it codifies mass migration into the United States and strips states of their constitutional right to self-defense.

One provision in the bill would prevent judges in federal courts in any state from ruling on lawsuits filed by states, essentially neutering states like Texas, Florida, Louisiana and others whose federal judges have ruled against the Biden administration in lawsuits filed over border-related measures over the past three years.

It states, "The United States District Court for the District of Columbia shall have sole and original jurisdiction to hear challenges, whether constitutional or otherwise, to the validity of this section or any written policy directive, written policy guideline, written procedure, or the implementation thereof."

“Texas stripped of powers in border security bill," Abbott said in response. "This is unacceptable.”

            1. Red Rocks White Privilege   1 year ago

Uh, the bill actually outlaws states from seeking recourse via the federal justice system? How fucking convenient; I'm sure such a policy would only be applied in this particular instance and not any others!

              1. InsaneTrollLogic   1 year ago

Yep, any challenges must be heard in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.

        3. Red Rocks White Privilege   1 year ago

Just because Trump hates a Bill does not automatically make it a good Bill

And this is where the misdirection comes in. "Oh, they're just doing Trump's bidding!" is meant to actually avoid talking about the specifics of the bill, such as the provision that allows the President to ignore the thresholds whenever he feels like it, or that the average figure is still about 4000 more than what Obama called a "crisis level" amount of crossers when he was in office. But dipshits like Patterico want everyone to believe that 4,000 more than that level is suddenly the best immigration deal that's ever been made over the last generation, a "game-changer," as opposed to the same old Gang of 8 smoke and mirrors.

          1. Ron   1 year ago

Misdirection it is, they always just mention Trump and no further discussion is required. Even the MSM is now saying they won't report anything Trump says because its Trump

The more they rely on shit like that the more people see through it. I don't understand why they still continue to do it, when it's getting pretty obvious that it just isn't working. Are they really that stupid? Or is it the result of their own lack of self awareness?

            2. Red Rocks White Privilege   1 year ago

And HR 2 and HR 29 is right on Schumer's desk. The Senate couldn't have hammered out something on one of those? And notice that the usual suspects on the center-right don't have a single fucking thing to say about them, or the issues that they have with them. They act like those bills don't even exist and continue to squeal like stuck pigs about the Senate bill.

This is the tell that this isn't about actually securing OUR border, it's about securing Israel and Ukraine's. That's why they're so manic about the Senate bill getting through, spewing a bunch of bullshit that this is the supposed best thing they've ever seen in a generation, and whining that not passing the bill is "doing Putin's bidding." They couldn't give a squirt of piss about the US border, and ultimately never did.

Shrike has spent the last few weeks pumping Bidenomics up off of GDP. Most of us have pointed out how government spending increases GDP. So how effective was that "taxpayer" investment?

In the past 12 months the federal deficit increased by $1.3 trillion. Yet we only got half that in GDP — about $600 billion. In other words, everything else shrank. It’s even worse for that brave and stunning Q4 — there we got just $300 billion in extra GDP for — wait for it — $834 billion of new federal debt.
    .
While Q4 GDP rose by $329 billion to $27.939 trillion, a respectable if made-up number, what is much more disturbing is that over the same time period, the U.S. budget deficit rose by more than 50%, or $510 billion. And the cherry on top: The increase in public U.S. debt in the same three-month period was a stunning $834 billion, or 154% more than the increase in GDP. In other words, it now takes $1.55 in budget deficit to generate $1 of growth… and it takes over $2.50 in new debt to generate $1 of GDP growth!

Following the path of Argentina and China. Drive up GDP with government spending.

And when have I (or a lot of others you claim) absolve Trump merely to blame Biden? It’s utterly amazing how you let Trump live totally rent-free in your head, dude.

And when have I (or a lot of others you claim) absolve Trump merely to blame Biden?

The massive spending bills that Trump signed into law added a shitton of cash into the economy, yet you refer to the resulting inflation as Bidenflation. So you're blaming Biden for Trump's last year in office.

                  1. InsaneTrollLogic   1 year ago

Because the larger spending bills were done after Trump left office.

Was Trump perfect? Far from it. Was he better than his predecessor and successor? Yes, but that's not exactly a high bar in either case. Did he have to fight headwinds from entrenched bureaucrats while in office? Yes. Could he have shut his mouth more and stayed off Twitter? Yes (and he might have gotten more accomplished that way). Is he getting unfairly fucked over and railroaded now by people who hate his guts and want to destroy him by any means, even if that means trampling on the rule of law and the Constitution? Yes. Do you have a massive case of TDS, Sarc? We all know that answer is "yes".

Funny thing is I actually agree with everything you said except the TDS part, because I’m not one of Trump’s Deranged Supporters.

I would add that he’s a crybaby who can’t handle losing, that many of his legal troubles are of his own making (classified documents and Georgia), that anything libertarianish he did was incidental, and while he was less-terrible than the presidents before and after, he was still terrible.

                    2. sarcasmic   1 year ago (edited)

Because the larger spending bills were done after Trump left office.

Emergencies become the new baseline. Trump created the new baseline when he signed the emergency COVID spending, just like the Bushes created new baselines with TARP and 9-11 emergency spending.

Oh, and since the narrative claims I can't praise Trump, I have to repeat that I have consistently given him credit for trying to make meaningful cuts in regulations, and for not starting any new wars. Good job Trump.

Can you credit Biden for continuing Trump's economic and trade policies? No? Didn't think so. I think Biden sucks for continuing Trump's shitty economic and trade policies.

What Democrat was against that spending? Which Democrats were not insisting that that spending must happen, and indeed, was greatly inadequate?

            1. JesseAz   1 year ago

Democrats added 2 more bills of even more spending. Sarc blames trump for that.

            2. sarcasmic   1 year ago

Was Trump against the spending? No. He wanted the COVID checks to be $2000, not $600, and wanted his name on the checks.

So your narrative that that spending was purely the fault of Democrats, and not Trump, is a lie.

              1. Mickey Rat   1 year ago

I did not say that it was purely Democrats fault. I am saying that the Democrats position on spending is always "more, harder, faster".

If you do not want spending, the Democrats offer no alternative.

                1. sarcasmic   1 year ago (edited)

Saying Republicans suck too isn’t praise for Democrats.

edit: although I can see how it could be interpreted that way being that the standard Trump defense is Democrats did it first, so saying Democrats are worse is an excuse to be terrible.

        1. Jefferson Paul   1 year ago

I do blame Trump (as well as Congress) for the high levels of spending during his administration. It was high before Covid too, when he had Republican control of the House and Senate for the first two years. (yes, the GOPe were not allied with him and the deep state and bureaucracies were actively working against him, but he didn't seem to make lowering spending a priority.)

Trump wasn't close to a perfect president. That being said, I'll take the good of another Trump administration any day over another Biden term, or a M. Obama/G. Newsome/other Dem administration that would spend even more than Trump could dream of passing through Congress. Even if Trump fails to fulfill most or all of his promises/proposals, at least him being president will put a damper on the massively destructive plans of the Democrats (unfettered illegal immigration, CBDC, even higher spending, stripping away civil rights and liberties for disfavored groups, and more).

Eric boehm has an article about pre covid spending under Trump. He reluctantly noted 70% of the spending growth was payment on the debt and entitlement spending.

Not sure how you can blame Trump for that.

            1. Elmer Fudd the CHUD 2: Steampunk Boogaloo   1 year ago

              “Because it’s Trump!”

              -Sarc

            2. Jefferson Paul   1 year ago (edited)

Even now, Trump is saying he won’t approve any cuts to the biggest entitlements, Soc Sec and Medicare. I understand he’s trying to win, and admitting he is for that would make electoral victory EXTREMELY difficult, but his position is to kick the can down the road, unfortunately. That’s one thing that is a black mark on Trump (and almost all other R and D politicians as well).

I’m being honest about some of Trump’s weaknesses. He does have them. Sarc, on the other hand, will only look at Trump’s weaknesses (and even make some up that aren’t real), and ignore the positives. There might even be a “diagnosis” for his condition, but I struggle to think of the name. Some kind of syndrome, I think.

At the same time, I am 100% going to vote for Trump in Nov because the positives greatly outnumber the negatives. I’ve always scoffed at people (like my father) who say every presidential election is the “most important of our lifetimes.” This one, I tend to agree, is perhaps the most important. If the lawfare against political enemies is allowed to continue, and only in one direction, our republic is over.

              2. InsaneTrollLogic   1 year ago

And I agree. It's one thing to look at the strengths and the weaknesses of a candidate/President and come to a conclusion. Hell, I voted for Gary Johnson back in 2016 due to such an evaluation. Trump was better than I expected (and damn glad Hillary did not win), and was better than Biden for 2020, so I voted for Trump then. Not because he was great, but because he was better than the alternative. This time around though, I will probably vote for Trump (November is still a ways off) due to the lawfare shit, and the attitudes and actions of the Democrats over the past 4 or 8 years, depending on what they've done.

Sarc only seems to look at the negative, and fails to do the analysis of why this guy is good or bad. Then goes off on the rest of us when we point out the ridiculousness of the lawfare against the man.

        2. jimc5499   1 year ago

Yep. If Trump would have vetoed them he would have caught shit from all sides. Then again he caught shit from all sides for anything that he did.

"As an economic system, fascism is socialism with a capitalist veneer...Where socialism sought totalitarian control of a society’s economic processes through direct state operation of the means of production, fascism sought that control indirectly, through domination of nominally private owners. Where socialism nationalized property explicitly, fascism did so implicitly, by requiring owners to use their property in the “national interest”—that is, as the autocratic authority conceived it. (Nevertheless, a few industries were operated by the state.) Where socialism abolished all market relations outright, fascism left the appearance of market relations while planning all economic activities. Where socialism abolished money and prices, fascism controlled the monetary system and set all prices and wages politically. In doing all this, fascism denatured the marketplace. Entrepreneurship was abolished. State ministries, rather than consumers, determined what was produced and under what conditions. [Econlib]

Nice selective quoting going on. Don't go read the memo for yourself, just let Uncle Jesse show you his [favorite] parts!

The source you linked to [innocently] omitted the previous paragraph of the memo, which noted that there are an estimated 11 million removable noncitizens in the US and that [DHS] does not have the resources to apprehend and remove all of them. Accordingly, DHS must necessarily exercise its discretion and prioritize which noncitizens to remove.

And then it omitted the language after it, which also emphasized the need to exercise discretion. [Another innocent mistake, surely!]

      1. Red Rocks White Privilege   1 year ago

The source you linked to [innocently] omitted the previous paragraph of the memo, which noted that there are an estimated 11 million removable noncitizens in the US and that [DHS] does not have the resources to apprehend and remove all of them.

Funny how this didn't come up in testimony to Congress, followed by a specific request for resources to actually remove them.

And then it omitted the language after it, which also emphasized the need to exercise discretion.

Yes, because indulging in glittering generalities in the same paragraph like, "Justice and our country's well-being require it," certainly doesn't show any indication of pathological altruism at work. Talk about selective omissions!

        1. JesseAz   1 year ago

This is the same leftist argument that seems popular lately.

Since they can't remove all of them, they can be excused for not really removing any of them.

          1. ObviouslyNotSpam   1 year ago

And that's what excuses the "selective" quotation, apparently.

          2. MWAocdoc   1 year ago

And with that you STILL have not cited ANY examples of that "argument" anywhere! It's a STRAW MAN to prop up your failed narrative. In any other context it would seem stupid, so you have to pretend that someone's even more stupid argument is even more stupid than yours.

            1. JesseAz   1 year ago

Lol. Jeff and sarc have both used the argument.

What point are you trying to defend here? Is this a response to be blowing up your open border arguments with actual citations of costs last week?

What argument in support of the current border situation do you want to make? Ill refute whatever you want. You seem ignorant to reality regarding borders such as your claims on welfare use last week.

You try to mix in the idea of "they shouldn't receive welfare" while ignoring they do. You can't hide what is happening behind an ideal that doesn't exist and claim to be correct on the issue.

I'm honestly curious what drove this response as everyone knows who I'm referring to. Jeff literally made the argument. So did sarc.

I think the problem with some open border zealots is that they’re so entrenched in their beliefs that they can’t accept how much worse the problem has gotten since Biden took office.

We’re no longer just dealing with some Mexicans sneaking across to pick veggies under the table, we’re dealing with hordes of young men from Africa, the Middle East, and China. But they refuse to acknowledge the difference because it shatters their narrative.

Whats hilarious to me is that I actually agree with full migration absent a welfare state. I'm just rational and demand to the end of the welfare state prior for open border allowance. That is because taxes are already theft from individuals. So giving that money to someone else in a transfer is a violation.

People like the doc above claim they also want open borders with no welfare, but actively support open borders now despite the costs which means they are approving the current taxes paying for it.

They think travel rights of non citizens trump the right against theft of citizens.

Under the influence of former President Donald Trump, many elected Republicans are denouncing the bipartisan border security bill.

Cmon robby. This is your thesis? Criticism of the bill started before a single statement regarding it by Trump. This is the narrative the NYT and Schumer are pushing though.

The bill is terrible regardless of what Trump says. It legalizes the current border chaos. It even disallows future administration enforcement by forcing suits to be in D.C. which will be used by leftist orgs to stop future administrations for actually trying to enforce the border.

The bill is bad on its own. But your first impulse is to invoke Trump.

    1. JesseAz   1 year ago

And now finishing the article. It gets even worse.

Did your ownership tell you to push this narrative instead of discussing the actual contents of the bill?

    2. Rev Arthur L kuckland   1 year ago

The bill literally says it can be undone if Biden says the border isn't an emergency. You know, the same as he did on day 1 in office

      1. JesseAz   1 year ago

But that isn't the worst part. As mentioned if Biden loses and Trump says lock it down, any pro immigration agency can sue, it is forced into the DC Circuit, corrupt judges scream animus, and enforcement is removed. It is a false enforcement clause in the bill to give left everything they want.

The DC clause is the most insidious part of the bill allowing a corrupt court to over rule the executive.

Whats also funny is the enforcement of the mentioned "shut down" border still requires up to 1400 migrants a day allowed through, more than what even Obama stated was unsustainable.

I'm much less of a border hawk than many here, but this still sounds insane and bizarre to me. The Biden White House pressured Amazon to take action against books with contrarian COVID-19 messages.

While I am glad you've moved past the narrative of muh private companies and admit to government pressure, much of this information was known when you were defending the censorship. Examples were available. Try being at the forefront of these issues instead speaking up after the bad acts.

    1. Sometimes a Great Notion   1 year ago

Some of those examples took place under the Trump admin, like Steven Crowder starting in 2019. So was it the Trump Admin or private companies back then?

      1. JesseAz   1 year ago (edited)

Reason defended the censorship for a few years screaming Twitter and SV could do whatever they wanted, they were private, while ignoring they were in collusion with the government. Need to remember there was an active Resistance inside the executive working against Trump. The NYT and WaPo published glowing articles of federal workers undermining Trump and using federal resources to go after conservatives.

If you can find me an example of Trump condoning this censorship I would happily change my mind.

        1. Sometimes a Great Notion   1 year ago

I don't think Trump admin did anything of the sort. But alot of private companies defense from Reason came under his admin and I've seen no evidence that refutes that, the rest is just speculation.

My view is, the Biden admin saw what silicon valley was capable of doing and wanted to get in on the action. That is the problem, not youtube or twitter doing it on there own.

          1. JesseAz   1 year ago

What do you mean here? Like the Democrats and "the resistance" in the government started making censorship requests while Trump was still in office and then formalized them when they came into power?

            1. Sometimes a Great Notion   1 year ago

No I think, the progressive who work at youtube on their own canceled people like Steven Crowder back under Trump. Then the Biden admin came in and got in on the action and started demanding companies take action against their political rivals or people who they disagreed with.

So back in 2019 when Reason said private companies they were essentially correct and then changed that view once Biden admin came in and started doing it themselves.

              1. JesseAz   1 year ago

Twitter files shows the government collusion in 2019.

    1. Jefferson Paul   1 year ago

Honest question: what are the good parts? It seems every single part of it just enshrines into law what the Biden admin is doing now. Even worse, the parts about shutting down the border after 5-8k per day say that Biden can choose to shut it down. He doesn't even have to do so, even at rates above what's listed. Then all disputes get settled by the DC District court (not an accident this court was chosen). More money for CBP and ICE, not to stop the "invasion," but to process "asylum" claims faster (this means even more catch and release into the country). This law, if passed, would also make it much harder for Trump to curtain the flood of illegals, if he were elected in Nov.

      What are the good parts?

      1. Jefferson Paul   1 year ago

        *curtail, not curtain

      2. Quicktown Brix   1 year ago (edited)

One thing I read is in the bill that’s a good thing (the only good thing, as I recall) was automatic work permits for those that pass initial asylum screenings.

Migrants should support themselves instead of needing welfare. On the other hand, this could be seen as an incentive for migrants, but I still feel this is a net good.

        1. JesseAz   1 year ago

          Question for you QB.

Currently illegals dont fall under ACA requirements for emplpyee Healthcare costs. This by default makes the illegal cheaper compared to a citizen at the outset. I am fairly confident that migrants on work permits also don't count to other taxes requires for employment such as FICA.

So if an illegal immigrant displaces a legal immigrant due to cheaper employment costs, do you count the costs of the displace employee as a cost of illegal immigration?

          1. Quicktown Brix   1 year ago

Yes I think the displaced worker is a cost of illegal immigration until that person finds new employment. However, the working migrant also brings value.

My preference would be any taxes on a citizen or legal immigrant should be applied to asylum migrants, but what those taxes should be is a topic of its own.

      3. Nazi-Chipping Warlock   1 year ago

The one bit that I saw (which may have been bullshit spin) was that people applying for asylum would have to do so outside of the country. I'd call that a win, but coupled with the fact that they still want to let millions in illegally before they even consider enforcing the border really outweighs it.

"The Biden White House pressured Amazon to take action against books with contrarian COVID-19 messages."

During the panic of 2020, I got put in Facebook jail for writing a blurb on my timeline about a book I read, written BEFORE COVID hit, basically a post-apocalyptic series in which the primary cause of the all the bad stuff was a "bat-flu" that was engineered and released with the sole purpose of using the "vaccine" to weed out "undesirables" and then implement a new world order...oh, and the vaccine for "normals" included tracer chips.

Of course it all got out of hand, mutated, killed 90+% of the population of the world, the main protagonist's billionaire father was one of the plotters, etc. etc.

But writing all that got me put into Facebook jail on a series of COVID-related violations.

    1. Idaho-Bob   1 year ago

I was in Facebook jail for posting a guy vaping while wearing a rag and then wearing a dust mask. Of course, the vapor poured out around the edges and through the mask itself. Covid wasn't even mentioned in the video.

Thankfully, Covid policies prompted me to end my Facebook account.

        "Rising Storm" by Kyla Stone

Not really that good at all. Solidly in the "YA Fiction" genre, and hence not subtle about anything. I'm not in the habit of reading YA fiction, but read it mostly because it came up in my Kindle Unlimited feed after I read some other Kindle Unlimited post-apocalyptic books. I consume books on Kindle Unlimited pretty voraciously, but it has some misses in the "Books similar..." recommendations.

I am not suggesting she would be great, but she would be competent. The fact is that the Republican leading in the nomination right now is incompetent and there no reason that he will not pick another incompetent to be his VP. Trump will have a hard time because his narcissism will not allow him to pick a VP that could be better than him and as besting him is so easy there is not much choice.

    4. Red Rocks White Privilege   1 year ago

There is pretty much nothing within either party that looks like a generational shift.

Seriously? Just because Biden and Trump are taking up all the space doesn't mean there won't be jockeying for their positions once they're gone. Nature abhors a vaccum, after all.

Like I said yesterday, the Dems are obviously going to put Newsom as the front-runner. There will be other favored politicians like Pritzker, Whitmer, Hobbs, and Bashear. Fringe candidates like AOC and Dean Phillips could get more traction. Neocon migrants to the party like Kinzinger or Cheney could throw their hats in; Cheney in particular clearly has a Hillary-level thirst for political power and will see the Dems as her best shot.

On the GOP side, DeSantis, Kemp, Youngkin, Rubio, Cruz, Rand Paul, and maybe some older guard types like Sununu still have media exposure, and who knows who will actually emerge in the next four years. Remember, Bill Clinton was left for dead multiple times, from his Speech That Wouldn't End at the 1988 convention to his early bimbo explosions in 1992, and still managed to grab the brass ring due to the very unique political and socio-economic circumstances of the time that were trending away from 1980s Reaganism.

Newsom is probably on the same level as Pritzker, only in better physical shape.

      4. R Mac   1 year ago

When Whitmer gets on the national stage she’ll be as popular as Hillary. The only reason she won reelection here was because republicans put up a candidate that was against abortion completely, even in cases of rape and incest, and just about every female college student got out and voted.

        1. HorseConch   1 year ago

The women who have a real chance on the national stage are typically right-leaning and thus despised by democrats worse than minorities. Palin, Tulsi, Noem, MTG, Boebert, and others of the kind that don't run around pretending to be wonderful would be able to have traction if they weren't demolished by the pro-woman crowd.

Robby, the bill is a major turd.

    https://www.thecentersquare.com/texas/article_98d4b954-c4f7-11ee-af6c-87de153afc32.html

At a meeting with governors on Sunday, Abbott said states working together have already secured one area of the border in Texas, which they plan to replicate in other areas. Their efforts have been so successful blocking cartel-driven illegal activity that illegal activity is being pushed west to Democratic-run states providing no resistance, Texas border czar Mike Banks told The Center Square.

The senators pushing the bill have no understanding of the threat posed by Mexican cartel and transnational criminal organizations responsible for creating an invasion of the southern border, Texas officials argue. Crockett County’s invasion resolution identifies them as “paramilitary, narco-terrorist organizations that … use migrant warfare to obfuscate the trafficking of drugs and people by utilization of irregular techniques, tactics, and procedures. The terrorist designation acknowledges that non-state actors are conducting irregular warfare operations and breaching the sovereignty and national security of the United States, and furthering Gov. Abbott’s formal diplomatic representation to the United States that the State of Texas is not protected against an in invasion.”

"For anyone who writes a regular newspaper column dedicated to satirising the excesses of the modern Left, these are difficult times. Obviously the problem is not a lack of material. There’s more material than any columnist could ever hope to accommodate. The problem, instead, is that the material is often so utterly preposterous, it doesn’t actually need to be mocked or parodied. It leaves satire wholly redundant.
Take, for example, the following news story published over the weekend in the San Francisco Chronicle. It reports that a struggling elementary (i.e. primary) school has spent $250,000 (c£200,000) of federal funds on the services of a radical Left-wing educational organisation. Its name? “Woke Kindergarten.”

Well, no, I don't think much of it either. That's two problems.

  52. MWAocdoc   1 year ago

"Only a fool, or a Radical Left Democrat, would vote for this horrendous Border Bill"

Of course, that's a redundancy - the two are synonymous - but Radical Right Republicans are also fools. Having the RIGHT to lock down the border and having the ABILITY to lock down the border are two different things (thanks and a tip o' the hat to Ron White and Blue Collar Comedy). Most of the Congress critters would dearly love to distract Americans from the real issue with all this sound and fury, signifying nothing; which is: the immigration policy itself is the problem in the first place. Making 99% of potential immigrants illegal guarantees only expensive failure and perpetual conflict with no possible compromise or solution. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

  53. MWAocdoc   1 year ago

"Most voters think Biden is too old to be president."

This is a VERY dangerous question and, if true, indicates a very dangerous mindset among The People. There is no age at which one becomes "too old" to be - or DO - anything you can imagine! It is true that Biden's dementia makes him unqualified to be President. I suspect he was already too demented to be qualified for President during the 2019 election, as his handlers were just barely able to prop him up in the basement and only America's growing hatred of Trump at the time got him elected. There are many very competent people at Biden's age and almost as many highly incompetent people at thirty years younger than Biden. Enough with the age discrimination in the polls and everywhere else already!

    1. MWAocdoc   1 year ago (edited)

Disclaimer: I posted a meme with Biden’s face photoshopped onto the “Weekend at Bernie’s” movie poster on Facebook at the time, so anyone who was NOT demented back then could have foreseen this!

Bad news for Israel. I believe the Palestinians want to live in freedom and dignity. That's why they support Hamas. If being left alone means a life languishing in a concentration camp under fascist guns, Oct 7 should tell you your solution was categorically rejected.

            "and Hamas’s real genocidal actions."

You haven't read the South African indictment yet, have you? It may surprise you about who's doing the genocide. (Hint: it ain't Hamas.)

            1. Commenter_XY   1 year ago

misconstrueman, poll after poll after poll of the palestinians (a fake, invented people - they're arab lowlifes that other arabs reject) in Judea and Samaria and gaza show strong support for Hamas' actions and agenda. Those palestinians, the overwhelming majority of them, fully support killing every Jew alive. They celebrated the Simchat Torah pogrom.

Hamas made the choice; now they will die. Day after day, they will watch their fellow 'brave' warriors get taken out with head shots and precision munitions. And dogs will feed on their dead flesh.

Israel will annihilate Hamas. They will remain in Gaza forever. The palestinians will be scattered among Ishmael.

And misconstrueman, there is nothing you can do to stop it. Feel free to whine like a sick dog.

Not the wanton destruction, hyping phony command centers, killing Israeli hostages, party goers, kibbutz residents, not to mention 10s of thousands of non Jews, not the non-existent record of recovering hostages. It's amazing how much of our hard earned money they presume to just give away all around the world.

We don't have the money to send to Ukraine or Israel. Perhaps the senators can donate their salaries and office funding instead.

    1. Commenter_XY   1 year ago

Shit, send the Senators to Ukraine. They'll be more useful there in UKR than they are here at home.

      1. JasonT20   1 year ago

Why just the Senators? There are more members of the House and fewer of them are older than Biden.

        1. Truthfulness   1 year ago

The Democrats control the Senate and are the ones vocal about spending billions on Ukraine. Get your ageist tripe out of here.

    2. JasonT20   1 year ago

Foreign aid has never been as large a share of the federal budget as most people think it is. To say that we don't have the money to send to Israel or Ukraine is true, since the federal government runs large deficits (thus borrows the difference). But it is also true then that we don't have the money to increase security at the border, pay Social Security and Medicare benefits at their current levels indefinitely, fund our own military at its current levels...

      1. Nazi-Chipping Warlock   1 year ago

Except that defending the border and the country are actually legitimate duties of the federal government. Though I will agree with you that the budget of the military should be cut, along with Social Security and Medicare.

        1. JasonT20   1 year ago

That's what I mean. Debating priorities given the mismatch between spending and revenue is a necessary step that isn't happening other than in rhetoric. It would be great if they'd move the debate to actual tax legislation and appropriations as well. If someone is saying we don't have enough money for X, because it is a lower priority than other things, that is fair. But to just say we don't have enough money without that extra explanation is unhelpful at dealing with our fiscal problems. It also makes it seem like a way of saying that they don't want any money spent on it at all regardless of fiscal reality, but they don't want to say it that way.

We haven't been paying for Medicare and Medicaid for years now. Go look at the annual Treasury statements--the deficit for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have routinely been around 85%, annually. It's long been one of the biggest drivers of the deficit in the entire federal government.

The bill... includes $20 billion in new funding for Border Patrol agents, officials to process asylum claims, and other resources for the Department of Homeland Security.... the bill would also dole out significant foreign aid to Israel ($14 billion) and Ukraine ($60 billion). There's just one problem: Trump hates it.

Sounds like a lot more than one problem.

  63. AT   1 year ago

There's just one problem: Trump hates it.

I, for one, didn't even know the orange clown even had a take on it.

I hated it because it was awful in every way shape and form.

With Trump currently leading President Joe Biden in the polls, Team MAGA sees no reason to give the incumbent any kind of political win.

How the heck do you even frame it that way? The bill was bad strictly on its merits.

-Piss away a bunch of taxpayer money on nations that aren't America.
-Do nothing to stop the hordes of illegals.
-Turn the undisputed crime illegal immigration magically legal for a set number of border jumpers.
    -Slush funds galore.

Exactly what part of that do you find defensible, Trump or no-Trump?

    1. Red Rocks White Privilege   1 year ago

It's a neat little trick the left has pulled in the last decade. During Trump's time in office, their cities declared themselves immigration sanctuaries and said they didn't have to help the feds enforce immigration law. After Biden took over, they declared the entire US a sanctuary country and said the feds didn't need to enforce immigration law, but the states sure as fuck weren't allowed to do so.

    2. JasonT20   1 year ago

How the heck do you even frame it that way? The bill was bad strictly on its merits.

“The border is a very important issue for Donald Trump. And the fact that he would communicate to Republican senators and Congress people that he doesn’t want us to solve the border problem — because he wants to blame Biden for it — is really appalling,” Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, told reporters.

“The American people are suffering as a result of what’s happening at the border,” he said. “And someone running for president ought to try and get the problem solved, as opposed to saying, ‘Hey, save that problem! Don’t solve it! Let me take credit for solving it later.’”

“I didn’t come here to have the president as a boss or a candidate as a boss. I came here to pass good, solid policy," [Senantor] Tillis [R-N.C.] said. “It is immoral for me to think you looked the other way because you think this is the linchpin for President Trump to win.”

“There are a good number of people for whom border security is too good an issue to give up,” said Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D. “And I do reject that. I’ve always rejected the notion that perfect has to be the standard."

The Republican Party has put Trump ahead of everything, including their own stated goals of 'securing the border'. Trump even posted on his social media platform that they shouldn't do a deal unless they get "EVERYTHING." That means he doesn't want a deal now at all, since the GOP only controls the House. So they can block a deal, they can negotiate for a compromise, but they can't force through exactly what they want because they haven't won enough elections. And even if they do retake the White House and Senate in November, they will still have to deal with the filibuster in the Senate. (Which is a reason why they are getting a large chunk of what they want without having to give much in return in the Senate bill - they could filibuster in the Senate anything less.)

This bills perhaps is the biggest PR win for Biden and biggest L for GOP in recent times.

The bill (I have read the entire border portion of it) is exceptionally good in GOP's perspective. It gives truckload of money to all enforcement agencies (lot more than they can ever hope to spend), it has provisions to automatically cancel asylum law for all practical purposes and all this while giving absolutely nothing away on immigration front. Nothing to DACA, nothing for legal immigrants (except for some weird reason increase of paltry 14,000 greencards for legal immigrants).

Despite of this Republicans are unable to support it or even offer a decent criticism of it. They are now claiming a bill is not needed ?

Seriously, I do not know what strings Mitch and Lankford pulled for Dems to agree to this but if this bill does not pass, it is not clear to me what can really pass.

    Republicans are a complete mess.

I prefer it when you post about quitting your job at Rite-Aid to make $3,045.34 every 12 days.

      More usefully cogent.

  65. Ghatanathoah   1 year ago

Of course the Border Bill is in trouble with Republicans. If the border gets better they won't be able to use it as a club to beat the Democrats with. The goal is to use the border issue to farm votes, not to fix it.

Trump is polling well now, but he will doubtless find some way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory yet again in 2024.

    1. Truthfulness   1 year ago

Explain a scenario where this happens.
