An appeals court in Thailand has sentenced democracy activist Mongkol Thirakot to 50 years in prison for Facebook posts he made that were critical of the country's monarchy. A trial court had sentenced him to 28 years, but the appellate court found him guilty on 11 more counts during his appeal and gave him a longer sentence.

One of the big things they warn you about in the guidebooks for Thailand is don't talk about the king. Don't ask about it. Don't make jokes about it. Just, don't.

I'd guess that's still the case.

I am creating an honest wage from home of 1900 Dollars/week, which is wonderful, below a year gone I was unemployed during an atrocious economy. I convey God daily. I used to be endowed with these directions and currently, I have to pay it forward and share it with everybody,

What do you think? Try the Thai supreme court next?

You think you teach King lesson, but this is one lesson you do not be paid for teaching.

    Democrats taking notes.

I was gonna say, "the appeals court took a look, added 11 extra charges, and lengthened his sentence" sounds exactly like something that would happen after your democratic supporters perpetrated an insurrection against the monarchy while you told them "I am asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful, No violence!"

Sure, laugh at the foreigner all you want, but don't you dare criticize Trump in social media!!!

Yeah, those social media companies are in the Thrall of MAGA.

I'm sure the "mean tweets" you'll get in response is much, much worse than 50 years in prison!

      1. mad.casual   2 years ago (edited)

A *Thai* prison. Not that I *know* Thai prisons to be particularly bad, but I imagine there’s a lot more ankle shackles, sleeping on the floor, and getting punched in the face than there is in, say, on of the Nordic Prisons where visitors get confused about which group of row houses on which side of the knee-high picket fence is the prison.

Democracy protesters getting long sentences. You don't say.

"...but the appellate court found him guilty on 11 more counts during his appeal and gave him a longer sentence."

That'll teach him to take his punishment and not make any more fuss.

Incredible; guess they have no sense of res judicata. For all our problems here, we really do not appreciate how good we have it.

Right. Fucking LOL, have your 'serious discussion' all you like, just don't mention the King (from KiwiDude's link below):

The heavy-handed enforcement of lese majeste laws is crushing freedom of expression in Thailand. A serious discussion is urgently needed to amend the law and reconsider how it is enforced so that it conforms with Thailand’s international human rights obligations.
