empty debate stage | Kyle Mazza/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom
(Kyle Mazza/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom)

Has the old-school debate format been broken? In the past, debate stages were crowded, debates were relatively few, and nobody really dared opt out of them—even during primary season. Now, it's all just chaos.

Last night, in the fifth primary debate of this election cycle, hosted by CNN, viewers gleaned almost nothing. The stage was only populated by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who still mostly ignored the elephant in the room: that both are them are currently being left in the dust by the true frontrunner, former President Donald Trump, who has declined to participate in debates thus far.

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie dropped out of the race yesterday, and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy was not allowed onstage ("They didn't use polls that were approved in previous debates that had Vivek at 10," his press secretary told me, naming Trafalgar and Morning Consult as examples) so he ran his own counterprogramming event with Tim Pool and Candace Owens.

Meanwhile, I wouldn't be shocked if viewership was low for this futile cage match (the first debate drew about 12 million; the second drew 9.5; the third drew 7.5; the fourth, 4.1). Haley mostly tried to construct an image of a failing, pathetic DeSantis, dropping so low in the polls; DeSantis repeatedly tried to portray Haley as…liberal.

The few bright spots mostly related to sound, fiscally prudent policy offered by Haley. "I think we have to acknowledge that Republicans and Democrats have both done this," she said, referring to "wasteful spending" and that "$2.2 trillion COVID stimulus bill" as well as an "expanded welfare that's now left us with 80 million Americans on Medicaid, 42 million Americans on food stamps."

"We have to have someone that respects taxpayer dollars," she continued (music to my ears), and "we'll start by clawing back $100 billion of unspent COVID dollars that are still out there" and send the IRS "after the hundreds of billions of dollars of COVID fraud."

Trump on fire: I switched back and forth between CNN and Fox, which were two wildly different shows. Trump was on his A game. Merely 15 seconds after I tuned in, he started going off about DeSantis' "fancy shoes"—the Florida governor is a short king who wears lifts in his boots, which is kind of hilarious—during a meandering answer about none other than abortion bans.

"I am not going to be a dictator," he said at one point—the type of thing where, if you catch yourself saying it, you may need to engage in some self-reflection and discern why.

At some points, he had answers that I imagine were fairly reassuring to middle-class Iowans. "We are not the radicals" on abortion, Trump repeated over and over, citing how many Democratic states permit abortions late in pregnancy.

When the moderator, Fox's Bret Baier, asked Trump how he'd respond to accusations of being a "big-government Republican" due to him adding $8 trillion to the national debt, Trump responded: "You had to inject money. We gave businesses that were going bankrupt, temporarily bankrupt, but they needed money. We helped businesses."

"If I didn't do that, you would have had a depression in this country. That was a very good investment. And now what they should be doing instead of the kind of debt that they're building at record levels, they should be paying down their debt and they ought to go into the energy business instead of this green new scam business that they're in," he added.

TLDR: In short, if you didn't watch any of the debates or counterprogramming, you probably made a good choice. (For those who caught the Timothy Leary headline reference, I think that guy has some decent ideas for how to spend time, far away from the grips of CNN or Fox.)

But the fact remains that it's actually kind of awesome how the pageantry of debates has been cracked open, how more formats than ever before are being experimented with (like that weird Gavin Newsom–Ron DeSantis debate), and how candidates such as Trump are making unconventional campaigning choices—opting out of all primary debates—in lieu of playing the game. If debates had been forums where legitimate policy differences were explored in a long-form, meaningful way, then I'd probably be frustrated by this chaotic turn. But they weren't, they sucked, and now they're (mostly) dead.

Houthis shut down: Yesterday, the militaries of Great Britain and the United States jointly intercepted 21 drones and missiles fired at commercial ships in the Red Sea. The Houthis, backed by Iran and based out of Yemen, are responsible for the projectiles.

American military officials told The New York Times that the U.S. government may be considering retaliatory strikes on the Houthis. "What I can tell you is that, as we made clear, and many other countries made clear, there'll be consequences for the Houthis' actions," Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters yesterday. "Watch this space," said British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps.

The Houthis claim they are only targeting commercial ships that have ties to Israel, and that they are striking them out of support for Hamas and the Palestinian cause. This is a twisted argument, as being associated with Israel could mean all kinds of things. Moreover, it is not true: They are basically a terrorist organization (though not currently classified as such by the U.S. government), and they have targeted 26 commercial ships in the Red Sea, snarling global supply chains and endangering human life.

Meanwhile in the West Bank: Video has emerged showing what looks like three Palestinian men being shot by Israeli forces in the West Bank. There was no indication that these men posed a threat to the soldiers. "One of the wounded Palestinians was shot a second time after he got up and tried to hop away," per an Associated Press account.

An Israel Defense Forces spokesman contested that, saying "soldiers reported that one of the Palestinians—visible kneeling in front of an object just outside the frame—was igniting a Molotov cocktail when he was shot," according to the A.P. But the first shot appears to have hit a man named Nader Rimawi, who says that the object was actually a pile of cardboard and papers he and the others were preparing to light in order to stay warm.

Scenes from New York: The cops and the Hasidim are fighting again, this time over…the creepy tunnels in the synagogue. To non–New Yorkers, this is a very weird story. To New Yorkers? We take Hasidic quirks in stride.

King Arthur Excludes Whites From Accelerator Program

King Arthur Baking Company is hosting an accelerator program for bakeries and is explicitly excluding white-owned bakeries from participating.

Baking Pitchfest 2024 is a collaboration between the company and Project Potlock, a non-profit for "POC in CPG," or people of color in consumer packaged goods.

According to the King Arthur website, to participate, people must be "Asian or Pacific Islander; Black or African America; Hispanic or Latinx; Indigenous or Native American; Middle Eastern or North African."

"Winners receive financial support, brand exposure, and mentorship to help accelerate their businesses," the website says.

Winners of the Baking Pitchfest Bakery Edition, for example, can win up to $10,000 in funding and exposure through marketing.

    2. Red Rocks White Privilege   1 year ago (edited)

This is why chemjeff’s assertion that the “experts” should always be trusted rings so hollow. Look at all the “conspiracy theories” that turned to not be such (Vivek even called out the media to their faces on this recently). How many times did White Mike or his allies here claim that this shit wasn’t actually going on, or that if it was, it wasn’t common enough to worry about it? Suddenly, “principle” goes out the window when making a fuss about something the left supports comes under scrutiny.

Hell, these people get caught bragging about it to their colleagues when they think they’re in a closed forum, like the journoscum on the Journolist several years ago, or Latondra Newton admitting that Disney supported her "not so secret gay agenda" to "insert queerness everywhere," or the Vanderbilt doctors who boasted about how trooning out teenagers makes them life-long patients and sources of revenue, because they end up needing meds and follow-up surgeries for the rest of their lives.

      1. JesseAz   1 year ago

The hospitals were completely open about how much profit is to be gained from pushing these procedures even bragging about lifetime clients... until the push back. 2. Quicktown Brix   1 year ago (edited)

I work for Hopkins and received the email pasted below. It included heterosexual and cisgender.

Privilege is a set of unearned benefits given to people who are in a specific social group. Privilege operates on personal, interpersonal, cultural and institutional levels, and it provides advantages and favors to members of dominant groups at the expense of members of other groups. In the United States, privilege is granted to people who have membership in one or more of these social identity groups:
        • White people
        • Able-bodied people
        • Heterosexuals
        • Cisgender people
        • Males
        • Christians
        • Middle or owning class people
        • Middle-aged people
        • English-speaking people

Privilege is characteristically invisible to people who have it. People in dominant groups often believe they have earned the privileges they enjoy or that everyone could have access to these privileges if only they worked to earn them. In fact, privileges are unearned and are granted to people in the dominant groups whether they want those privileges or not, and regardless of their stated intent.

        1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   1 year ago

If only all these privileged groups left Hopkins, the institute would have a glorious future. It might be worth trying.

          OOPS...Just received this email

          Dear Colleagues,

Yesterday I sent the January edition of a monthly “Diversity Digest” from the Johns Hopkins Medicine Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity. The newsletter included a definition of the word “privilege” which, upon reflection, I deeply regret. The intent of the newsletter is to inform and support an inclusive community at Hopkins, but the language of this definition clearly did not meet that goal. In fact, because it was overly simplistic and poorly worded, it had the opposite effect of being exclusionary and hurtful to members of our community. I retract and disavow the definition I shared, and I am sorry. I will work to ensure that future messages better reflect our organizational values.

Per the glossary that was on the Johns Hopkins University website until Tuesday, lesbian is described as a "non-man attracted to non-men."

The real issues are the extent to which privilege as defined still exists, what if any steps should be taken to adjust for it, whether nowadays any other groups also benefit from it and if so, is their benefit at the unreasonable expense of prior privileged groups.

      1. Idaho-Bob   1 year ago

That's been the portrayal ever since Peggy McIntosh published that dumb essay about the "invisible knapsack," and it's always been founded on circular reasoning.

      4. Mickey Rat   1 year ago (edited)

The post by the DEI office is obviously bigoted and prejudicial, making assumptions about people based on demographic membership. It is also contentious as it defines “privilege” as coming at a nonprivileged person’s expense. It is little more than a rationalization for discriminatory policies against allegedly "privileged" employees and potential employees.

      5. JesseAz   1 year ago

I would love to hear you defend being born creates privilege. Or being christian is a privilege.

      6. Zeb   1 year ago

Even where real discrepancies exist, I think privilege is a wrong and pretty much backwards way to look at it. Having one's rights respected and being treated as an individual isn't privilege, it should be the default expectation.

      7. SRG2   1 year ago

As she noted, people who benefit from privilege are often unaware of it, because in a sense, privilege doesn't happen to them, the lack of privilege happens to other people.

If you're never pulled over by the police for DWB. how would you know that you're a privileged driver?

If you apply for a job and get an interview, how would you know that someone with a non-white name was less likely to get that interview?

Zeb seems to grasp some of this: "Having one’s rights respected and being treated as an individual isn’t privilege, it should be the default expectation."

But what do you do when it's apparent that some people are not treated as individuals, and don't have their rights respected?

Some of you lot are scared that by its being recognised that privilege exists, you will lose it and others will gain it at your expense - and those fears are not invariably unrealised. There are plenty of stories nowadays of firms and governments engaging in reverse discrimination. But it is not useful to deny your own privilege and implicitly therefore refuse to contribute to devising ways to arrive at, let's call it Zebworld, simply because you're afraid that to admit it, you'll encourage that reverse discrimination.

Basically, for some of you, the position is, if we have to choose between retaining our privilege and losing it to someone else, we prefer to retain it - understandable - but then you go on to deny that you have that privilege, which is the real bullshit, in order to avoid the explicit acknowledgment of your position.

Why not ask, how can we fix past ills without being unfair to current groups? What happens when it's proposed to get rid of legacy admissions, for example? Do people across the political spectrum say, yeah, that makes sense? Or do some people try to rationalise their continuing?

        1. Idaho-Bob   1 year ago

Some of you lot are scared that by its being recognized that privilege exists, you will lose it and others will gain it at your expense

This is hilarious. Like most shit from the left, it is nothing more than religious dogma. Faith-based ideals embraced by a victimhood mentality.

        2. Mickey Rat   1 year ago

Or it could be that "privilege" is a product of lazy, paranoid, conspiracy theory thinking to explain disparities that have other reasons for why they exist.

          1. JesseAz   1 year ago

What's especially great is that prior to the infantilization of certain minority groups, they had economic and educational gains on par with the "privileged" groups. This was true until the mid 50s and often cited by even Democrats like Moynihan. There were warnings of the programs dems put into place by their own members. But now they have to justify those programs as non failures by pushing the same crap SRG pushes above.

        5. Quo Usque Tandem   1 year ago

BS: you are pivoting around the entire issue of definite classes of people being targeted for discrimination, as the notion of "anti racism" is anything but race neutral; it is reverse discrimination with some lipstick painted on it.

As she noted, people who benefit from privilege are often unaware of it,

No, the real bullshit is taking McIntosh’s assertions at face value. Especially because when you actually read the article she wrote, she’s clearly getting her class-based assumptions mixed up with race-based assumptions.

          It's also a false dilemma.

        7. Outlaw Josey Wales   1 year ago

As she noted, people who benefit from privilege are often unaware of it, because in a sense, privilege doesn’t happen to them, the lack of privilege happens to other people.

If you’re never pulled over by the police for DWB. how would you know that you’re a privileged driver?

I may not have been pulled over for DWB, because I am not, but I have been pulled over for driving while being young with long hair, for driving a beater car, for driving a fancier car too fast, for driving with tints on the windows (AZ). Cops look for behaviour and tells passed on experience. It is not fair. Such is life.

If you apply for a job and get an interview, how would you know that someone with a non-white name was less likely to get that interview?
The same way that I would know that a woman got an interview over me, that someone younger got an interview over me, that someone with pronouns or the rainbow flag in their resume got an interview over me. I've gotten interviews and jobs based on who I know or have gotten to know as well as not gotten a second interview because I did not look or sound a certain way. Privilege, it would seem, is who sits in the position of power. An ever changing and organic process if left alone.

Zeb seems to grasp some of this: “Having one’s rights respected and being treated as an individual isn’t privilege, it should be the default expectation.”
Seems right on. Yet, you yourself have your own biases towards others as expressed. I could even nuance your response as a micro-aggression against poor Zeb's ability to grasp anything if I followed the rules of the constantly offended.

But what do you do when it’s apparent that some people are not treated as individuals, and don’t have their rights respected?
It should be clear that the DEI thing isn't really working that well and is much more divisive than it is inclusive. Would you agree?

Some of you lot are scared that by its being recognised that privilege exists, you will lose it and others will gain it at your expense – and those fears are not invariably unrealised. There are plenty of stories nowadays of firms and governments engaging in reverse discrimination. But it is not useful to deny your own privilege and implicitly therefore refuse to contribute to devising ways to arrive at, let’s call it Zebworld, simply because you’re afraid that to admit it, you’ll encourage that reverse discrimination.
Our lot recognizes that privilege exists at multiple cultural levels. Your lot seems to want to determine how that privilege label is applied instead of universally applying it to all people. That is where your division is coming from. We are a 'rules' lot. If you want to define something a certain way we would like to be included in that definition rather than lumped into a very narrow definition that is only meant to exclude.

Basically, for some of you, the position is, if we have to choose between retaining our privilege and losing it to someone else, we prefer to retain it – understandable – but then you go on to deny that you have that privilege, which is the real bullshit, in order to avoid the explicit acknowledgment of your position.
No. Basically, if you want to define privilege, then take the time to define it for all. Everyone. It is your side making it an either/or argument rather than a bring the world closer process. That is the bullshit.

Why not ask, how can we fix past ills without being unfair to current groups? What happens when it’s proposed to get rid of legacy admissions, for example? Do people across the political spectrum say, yeah, that makes sense? Or do some people try to rationalise their continuing?
Yes, people across the spectrum say yes and others want to hold onto it. What is wrong with holding on to something that one feels they have earned. Why is always deemed 'at the expense' of someone else. That, my friend, is how the world works. You didn't get every job, every date, every friend, every promotion, every apt, every house, every car, every new pair of shoes you wanted day in an day out. You know what builds character and makes people better? Disappointment. It forces them into the position or trying harder or giving up.

“I am not going to be a dictator,” he said at one point—the type of thing where, if you catch yourself saying it, you may need to engage in some self-reflection and discern why.

Yeah, the left has never made it a tactic to make broad accusations and constantly force the right to answer them. They don’t get asked questions like “Will you acknowledge that your supporters are racists?” That sort of thing never happens.

    1. n00bdragon   1 year ago

I think this is probably in response to the fallout from the Hannity interview where Hannity tossed him a softball question “Under no circumstances — you are promising America tonight — you would never abuse power as retribution against anybody?” and Trump gave the baffling response "Except for day one".

So no, this has nothing to do with "the leftists" speculating that he'll be a dictator. This is him trying to CYA after he himself, his own person, without outside influence stated that he would, in fact, be a dictator.

      1. JesseAz   1 year ago

“Except for day one,” the GOP front-runner said Tuesday night before a live audience in Davenport, Iowa. “I want to close the border, and I want to drill, drill, drill.”

Regarding two whole policies which he is openly campaigning on. THE HORROR.

        1. n00bdragon   1 year ago

Add all the context that you want. It was a terrible answer to the question that gives lie to the idea it is "leftists" which are the source his characterization as a dictator. Mr. Trump has no enemy in politics more threatening than the man who faces him every morning in the mirror. His own fashion of meandering stream-of-consciousness word salad has once again taken his shoes off the carefully manicured path and planted his feet directly into his own mouth. He's the one who did it. No one else.

          1. JesseAz   1 year ago

I added context? I finished the sentence.

Why was it a terrible answer? It was a joke made to push the policies he is actively campaigned on. Was it terrible because it allowed you and corporate media to lie about what he said?

Stop justifying your own ignorance of not knowing the full sentence.

            1. Jefferson Paul   1 year ago

It was a stupid, terrible answer, though. As soon as I heard it I knew it was going to be red meat to the left.

But they were already calling him a dictator and saying he would be one before he gave that answer--otherwise, why would Hannity have asked that question.

He wasn't a dictator, and won't be one if/when he's reelected. But it's foolish to give the legacy media a clip that they can take any context away and play on a loop.

Why was Hannity asking that question before Trump’s answer came out?

        1. Medulla Oblongata   1 year ago

Most likely because every MSM has had some sort of Dictator Trump meme coverage (ignoring the 4 years he had a chance to become a dictator, and despite his election tantrums he walked out of the White House at the appointed time) and Hannity was tossing him a softball to give him a chance to undercut the meme.

But remember, they don’t actually know what words mean anymore, especially that one. Remember Anti-fa (anti-fascists) attacked anti-mask mandate protesters–people who were protesting government mandates as being dictatorial in nature–“fascists”.

The irony that a violent group of masked activists clad in blackshirts and promoting government orders calls itself antifa…it burns.

I thought that was probably it. But it didn't really reduce government power, just declined to use a small part of it. Which is good as far as it goes. But the next guy can put it all back the way it was. The power is still there.

            1. JesseAz   1 year ago

You can't expect any single individual in a single term to undo the entirety of the bureaucratic state, especially when under false investigations for russian collusion and an active "Resistance" in the bureaucratic state actively working against his directives and initiatives.

              1. Zeb   1 year ago

Of course the president can't do it without congress. But the real problematic power is all the executive agency rule making stuff, not the particular regulations that are in force at a given time. I don't really know if Trump has a position on that issue.

It’s pretty hilarious that Dick Cheney in high heels is calling DeSantis a loser, when his electoral accomplishments are a hell of a lot more impressive than hers. No way in hell would Haley have taken a purplish state known for election-day shenanigans for 20 years, and turned it into a relatively drama-free process where outcomes were known as early as 10 pm Eastern and Republicans won consistently. In fact, the woman primarily responsible for all that shit, Brenda Snipes, was put in place by Jeb himself, and it’s notable that things have run very smoothly state-wide ever since DeSantis forced her out of office.

The center-right peacocking about Haley's wins in South Carolina conveniently leave out the fact that SC is not a swing state, and that the GOP candidate is pretty much a lock for those elections.

    1. Red Rocks White Privilege   1 year ago (edited)

That’s absolutely why the establishment is pushing her so hard. They know she has no actual principle except “figure out how to look like things are ‘getting done,’ by rolling over for the Dems,” and she’ll happily be a punching bag for 4 years until Newsom or Pritzker obliterates her in 2028. They really want her in office, in particular, because the economy is showing signs that it’s about to take another shit, and they don’t want old-ass Biden or Cacklin’ Kammie around when that happens.

    "The Establishment Is Unmasking Itself"

    https://www.zerohedge.com/political/establishment-unmasking-itself

If the twenty-first century has been a war to preserve the establishment’s legitimacy, the current battle in the United States is the 2024 presidential election.

There’s truth to the familiar cliché that the next election is always the most important in history. As the federal government grows, spends more of our money, and intrudes more in our daily lives, the stakes of elections get higher and higher.

That still holds true for 2024, but there is much more going on. In Anatomy of the State, after defining the state as the “organization in society which attempts to maintain a monopoly of the use of force and violence in a given territorial area,” Murray Rothbard dedicates a chapter to how states preserve themselves.

While force is [the ruling class’s] modus operandi, their basic and long-run problem is ideological. For in order to continue in office, any government (not simply a “democratic” government) must have the support of the majority of its subjects.

In the United States, the political establishment has for many years evoked democracy to legitimize its actions in the eyes of the public.

But the internet allowed the public to see that many views and beliefs that had been presented as fringe were in fact popular—often even more popular than so-called mainstream ideas.

That revelation bolstered the anti-establishment movements of the 2010s—Occupy Wall Street, the Tea Party, the Ron Paul Revolution, and Trump’s 2016 campaign. And it sent the political establishment into a crisis of legitimacy.

The establishment is unwilling to admit that they are the reason Trump was elected. But, ironically, by attempting to disqualify him from participating in the election, they undermine the illusion of democracy - their main source of legitimacy in the eyes of many Americans. It’s hard to see how that will go well for them.

    1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   1 year ago

'The establishment is unwilling to admit that they are the reason Trump was elected. But, ironically, by attempting to disqualify him from participating in the election, they undermine the illusion of democracy – their main source of legitimacy in the eyes of many Americans. It’s hard to see how that will go well for them.'

Like watershed elections, there are watershed moments in societal evolution. You and I would like to think that a majority of Americans will push back if they sense democracy (whatever they imagine that is) faces a real threat. But I fear that many Americans would either shrug or eagerly abandon democratic values, as long as the new regime promised them physical and ideological security.

Remember how the Trump-nutters proclaimed Bidenflation was causing everyone to work multiple jobs?

The share of Americans working multiple jobs reached 5.3% in the summer of 2019,
    ......
Nearly 8.4 million people held multiple jobs in October, the Labor Department reported Friday. They represent 5.2% of the workforce, the largest share of moonlighters since January 2020.

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2023/11/03/more-americans-working-multiple-jobs-under-inflation/71441008007/

    1. InsaneTrollLogic   1 year ago

Ask yourself why, and you'll find it in the article you (again - surprise, surprise) failed to read.

Experts say people may be taking on extra work in response to inflation, which pushed prices up 4.7% in 2021, 8% in 2022 and 3.5% so far in 2023. Inflation has outpaced wage growth through much of that span.

Renter notes that the number of people working one full-time and one part-time job stands at an all-time high. The number of workers with two full-time jobs reached a historic peak in September.

Indeed, employees who can work remotely are more likely to take on multiple jobs than workers in office-bound roles, said Emma Harrington, an economist at the University of Virginia.

Since the start of the pandemic, the share of workers holding multiple jobs “has recovered more and, suggestively, even sometimes exceeds pre-COVID levels among those with ‘remotable’ occupations,” Harrington said in an email.

Of course, you fail to mention how there are more people than ever before leaving the workforce, as we've told you many times over.

I mean you spent all of 2022 cheerleading the Biden economy nonstop. You pretended only those brainwashed by "wingnut.com" would find fault with it. You dismissed the idea that inflation was a legitimate issue.

Biden is convinced entirely too many people decide how to work:

"New rule tightens worker classification standards; Uber, Lyft say their drivers won't be affected"
    [...]
"NEW YORK (AP) — The Biden administration enacted a new labor rule Tuesday that aims to prevent the misclassification of workers as “independent contractors,” a step that could bolster both legal protections and compensation for millions in the U.S. workforce.
Major app-based platforms including Uber, Lyft and DoorDash expressed confidence that the new rule would not force them to reclassify their gig drivers. But business groups warned the rule creates uncertainty for employers and much depends on how the Labor Department decides to enforce it..."
    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/opinion/new-labor-rules-aim-to-offer-gig-workers-more-security-though-some-employers-wont-likely-be-happy/ar-AA1mGPJ7

"the U.S. government may be considering retaliatory strikes on the Houthis."

I don't know if this is a misunderstanding or just a propaganda spin, but the United States military has no business "retaliating" against the Houthis. I'm glad they were able to shoot down drones and destroy attacking Houthi terrorist boats, and if they can identify military bases being used to launch attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea, they should by all means destroy them. But this does NOT constitute retaliation in any sense of the word. Reasonable people can disagree over whether the United States military SHOULD be protecting shipping from attack, but no one should be advocating retaliation against a nation with whom we are not engaged in a declared war.

  40. JFree   1 year ago

The Houthis claim they are only targeting commercial ships that have ties to Israel, and that they are striking them out of support for Hamas and the Palestinian cause...Moreover, it is not true: They are basically a terrorist organization (though not currently classified as such by the U.S. government), and they have targeted 26 commercial ships in the Red Sea, snarling global supply chains and endangering human life.

How times change. Before the Houthis were apparently deemed some terrorist movement, they were simply people of the Houthi tribe who followed a branch of Shiism called Zaidi. In a country then called Yemen which was one of two places (Yemen and Aden) now called Yemen. And Israel supplied them weapons BECAUSE they were Shiites - and hence not friendly to either Sunni Saudi or secular Nasser.

Interestingly Lebanese Shiites were also semi-friendly with Israel then and later. More because they hated Palestinians in Lebanon (enemy of enemy = friend) than because they were BFF's (those would be the Maronites and IDF). That is until they became Hezbollah.

If you want to know why all the friendly relations with Shia (Iran and Israel were also very friendly during the Shah) fell apart and turned hostile - the puzzle piece is in a neighborhood of Beirut called Sabra wielded by a man named Sharon.

You can bet that those ships DO have a connection to Israel even if it is more like a BDS connection. Houthis are not nihilists and they do know their own region (unlike American idiots). The US Navy is doing the work the world expects from a reserve currency and providing free security/protection for ship owners.

'Freedom of the seas' was not the American policy then. Nor was protecting ships flagged under a different country than the US. And the American-flagged merchant marine then had a fairly serious constitutional role re letters of marque and reprisal.

Iran’s Navy confirmed the seizure of the American oil tanker, in the Sea of Oman, this morning. This tanker was stolen about a year ago, and Iran retook it.

Iranian Navy's Public Relations announced that the seizure was made based on a court order.

The tanker which the Iranians have boarded today in the Gulf of Oman is the ST NIKOLAS (9524475); carrying Iraqi oil. Formerly known as the SUEZ RAJAN; she was seized by the US government for having transported a million barrels of Iranian oil in connection to a US company.

In Ukraine's case, I believe a lot of it is in cash, because American taxpayers are basically paying the salaries for the Ukraine government, including its military. In Israel's case, I'm not sure.

Maybe the legislators in California read Reason’s comment section. Reason has tons of commenters who argue that kids are very impressionable and can’t be trusted to consent to things that might cause long-term damage to their body (as football injuries can often do), even if their parents are on board with it.

Perhaps the legislators were so impressed by this strong moral commitment to protecting kids that they decided to adopt it themselves. Then, after adopting it, they decided to apply it to all kids, not just trans ones. Be careful what you wish for, people!
