The Chicago Board of Education and the David Lynch Foundation have agreed to pay $75,000 each to settle a lawsuit brought by Mariyah Green, a student at Bogan Computer Technical High School, who claims she was forced to participate in religious rituals that violated her Christian beliefs. The high school is one of several schools in the district to introduce Quiet Time, a program by the Lynch Foundation that includes Transcendental Meditation, which Green's lawyers said includes thinly described Hindu rituals. In a statement, the Lynch Foundation denied Transcendental Meditation is a religion. Green said she was told that refusing to take part in Quiet Time could affect her grades as well as her ability to take part in extracurricular activities and her class graduation ceremony.

As someone who's had biofeedback training and knows the benefits of being able to relax, I personally applaud the addition of training in meditation, but frankly you don't know if you're doing it right without some feedback. And while it may be a religious practice for Hindus, I don't see it as a religious practice (eating and fasting is a religious practice as well but that doesn't make you religious). I've even offered to pay for biofeedback training for some of relatives and close friends, and recommend it for everyone.

But this situation is simply a problem of government schools, allowing a student to sue the school (i.e., taxpayers) and the David Lynch foundation that apparently assisted in getting it in the government school. Get rid of the government schooling monopoly and this will no longer be a problem, because no government force will be used against people to act in what they say is against their religious beliefs, or Muslims suing because they can't pray towards Mecca at their designated prayer times.

Frankly, being forced to pay for government schools is an offense against our freedom. What should be separated (besides Church and State) is School and State, for basically the same reasons.
