striking autoworkers holding signs | Mark Bialek/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom
(Mark Bialek/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom)

More pay for less work? The United Auto Workers union, which began striking on Friday, will continue to make demands of the big three domestic automakers—General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis (the parent company of Chrysler, Jeep, and Ram)—asking for a 40 percent wage increase over four years, pension plan expansions, and a 32-hour, four-day workweek.

Companies have countered by offering 14.5 to 20 percent pay increases over the contract period as well as "lump-sum payments to help offset the effects of inflation" and hiking pay for "recent hires and temporary workers, who typically earn about a third less than veteran union members," reports The New York Times. It's a targeted strike, meaning some autoworkers across the country are continuing to show up for work while individual plants in Missouri (for GM), Michigan (Ford), and Ohio (Stellantis) are affected.

"For the last 40 years, the billionaire class has been taking everything and leaving everybody else to fight for the scraps," said union president Shawn Fain in a speech last week, noting that the Big Three have raked in a quarter-trillion in profits over the last four-year contract period. President Joe Biden chimed in, saying that it's time for automakers to share their "record profits" with workers.

The Big Three "had a combined market share of above 85% through the 1960s," writes the American Enterprise Institute's Mark Perry. By 2018, their market share had fallen to "an all-time low of 44.2%." In other words: Competition has gotten stiffer over time. Union activists may believe those greedy companies are just hoarding profits, but it's more likely that boards and executives are looking at market conditions and realizing that dominance is no sure thing and that profits must be reinvested in new technologies lest they fall (further) behind.

"The companies say that they are investing billions in a transition to battery-powered vehicles, which makes it harder for them to pay substantially higher wages," says the Times. "They say they are at a disadvantage compared with nonunion automakers like Tesla, which dominates the sales of electric cars."

Pro-choice Trump? "I think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake," said former President Donald Trump of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' six-week abortion ban during a Sunday morning Meet the Press hit. Trump, evading deeper questions on abortion, claimed he'd broker a deal to restore "peace on that issue for the first time in 52 years," satisfying everyone. Good luck!

Biden impeachment? House Republicans are opening an impeachment investigation to explore whether President Joe Biden benefited from his son Hunter's Ukraine business dealings. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R–Calif.), in conjunction with House Oversight Chair James Comer (R–Ky.), Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R–Ohio), and Ways and Means Committee Chair Jason T. Smith (R–Mo.), will lead investigations.

"Without doubt, Hunter Biden's shady business deals undermined America's image and our anti-corruption goals, and his conduct was thoroughly reprehensible," writes Rep. Ken Buck (R–Colo.) for The Washington Post. "What's missing, despite years of investigation, is the smoking gun that connects Joe Biden to his ne'er-do-well son's corruption."

Reason's J.D. Tuccille offers a different take: "A lot of the same outlets saying there's no evidence spend a lot of ink disputing the persuasiveness of evidence they tell us doesn't exist." (More on this here, here, and here.)

Scenes from New York: Overfishing, unintended consequences, and the magnificent marine life (whales!) flourishing right outside the city

Shots FIREd by the Los Angeles Times.

Never be as cool as when we got shots fired from the NYTimes' roof Gatling gun.

Ha, just read that LATimes quote.

    2. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 years ago

That remark by Ali is just an example of why you should never take anything the left says at face value. When they whine about "divisiveness," it's because someone's resisting their political agenda. When they say they "don't have a side," they're lying.

Ali in particular is a special kind of marxist ethno-nationalist turd that universities are pumping out on the sub-intellectual assembly line. Destroy academia, and this stuff will be nerfed for about 70-100 years.

      1. Elmer Fudd the CHUD 2: Steampunk Boogaloo   2 years ago

        100% correct.

    3. mad.casual   2 years ago (edited)

@LorraineAli, name a political view. It’s likely we’ve defended speakers on both sides of it many times.

Not to side with Ali, but what moron wrote this reply? Uh, free speech? You’ve defended both the pro- and anti-free speech sides? Unions and free association? You’ve defended the pro-Union/Anti-Free association, pro-free association/anti-Union, *and* anti-free association/anti-Union sides? Gun control? You’ve defended both the pro- and anti-gun control sides?

      Should I go on?

With “Both sides” retards like you defending free speech, who needs enemies? Way to go FIRE, you really pwned "Ali" on Twitter.

...asking for a 40 percent wage increase over four years, pension plan expansions, and a 32-hour, four-day workweek.

I'm beginning to wonder if certain Americans might not possibly be maybe pricing themselves out of the labor market.

    1. Sevo   2 years ago

Some folks are ignorant of the effects of costs on selling prices; a 20% in the first generates a much larger effect on the later.

      1. creech   2 years ago

Cite please. I've worked for a number of companies where the increased cost of labor could not be passed on due to competition.

        1. Brandybuck   2 years ago

Citation please. Show us the balance books where they just chose to lose money rather than increase prices marginally.

          1. creech   2 years ago

One did "chose to lose money" but it did because any attempt to raise prices would have kept them from getting competitively bid contracts. And small business owners, and even large corporations,
frequently choose to take smaller profits than before because they can't always raise prices enough to cover their increased costs.
An owner making, say, $200,000 profit, may decide it is better to make only $175,000 than to lose many of his customers by attempting to raise prices.

            1. Sevo   2 years ago

If your example was a publicly-traded company, that would show up in the quarterly statements and the stock valuation.

              1. creech   2 years ago

Have public traded companies NEVER ever showed lower profits, and had their stock go down, when they couldn't pass all their added costs onto their customers? I can't recall, in reading the WSJ for 40 years, any articles claiming such.

                1. Sevo   2 years ago

I would say you lack reading comprehension.

        2. Sevo   2 years ago

Not for long, you haven't, unless they were hugely profitable before the increased costs.
Furthermore, you missed the point: Costs MUST get marked up, not merely passed on, if you wish to make a profit,

      2. Earth-based Human Skeptic   2 years ago

Progressive economics rejects any quantitative and causal relationships between wages, prices, revenue, productivity, market share, profit, taxes, investment, and all other financial parameters. Plus math is racist.

    3. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 years ago

Another part of the problem is that the dealers are pricing vehicles WAY over the top these days. The F-150 I bought for $26K in 2019 costs $44K now, and even the dealer dropping money on the hood probably wouldn't take it below $35K. That's ridiculous for a basic V-6 crew cab.

      1. Elmer Fudd the CHUD 2: Steampunk Boogaloo   2 years ago

We’re headed for a major collapse in the auto market. Skyrocketing prices AND interest rates, plus a cratering economy and malignant EV mandates all but guarantee it. Then they will be screaming for more taxpayer money to bail their collective asses out again. And for what? So GM can build more plants onChina and outsource their labor there?

    4. Bubba Jones   2 years ago

It's true that many, many Americans don't understand why they have to work for a living.

On the other hand, Ford typically generates a gross profit of more than $20B per year. Net income is different but we've seen our share of accounting shenanigans.

      1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   2 years ago

Hey, being forced to work for a living because other people will not give you all the things you want is oppression. And probably racist.

    5. Elmer Fudd the CHUD 2: Steampunk Boogaloo   2 years ago

UAW members display a breathtaking sense of entitlement.

    6. Fats of Fury   2 years ago

GM's own numbers from 2020, The US labor force is 92,000, salaried employees is 58,000, That leaves 34,000 workers. Their total global workforce is 155,000, I imagine most not in a union. Get this they have 490,000 retirees.
American auto sales in China has dropped considerably. I don't see how GM can afford this. They may have to get more robots particularly for all those salaried guys,

"Comedian Hasan Minaj appears to have fabricated or exaggerated all kinds of stories, including an incident involving an FBI informant infiltrating his mosque and a tale of suspected anthrax being sent to his home."

Worst part is his comedy is praised for not being funny but for being woke.

      1. Mike Parsons   2 years ago

very sad, we used to appropriately label this stuff "propaganda"

      2. Overt   2 years ago

Dude, I listen to Netflix is a Joke on SiriusXM quite often, and I heard Minaj's bit about Prom. In the bit he says that he was dating this girl and:

        1) Went to her house on prom night, only to be turned away by her mom because she didn't want their girl at prom with a brown boy.
        2) Was ostracized by the school because he broke up with her over the ordeal.

When I heard that, I looked over at my wife and said, "That shit never, ever happened." It was too perfect. It hit all the stereotypical notes that every single hoax always says happened. And I was right.
        https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2023/09/hasan-minhaj-admits-to-embellishing-islamophobic-events-in-comedy-specials

"While Minhaj admitted to her version of the prom events, he homed in on the “emotional truth” of the situation, saying his version of the story resonated because “there are so many other kids who have had a similar sort of doorstep experience.”"

So this mother fucker trying to tell "Emotional Truths" ultimately outed this girl (fraudulently) as an islamophobe. And she faced death threats because of his woke bullshit.

To this day I hear people wonder why Smollett was so stupid with his whole "MAGA Country" hoax. This is why: Smollett and his ilk see people like Manaj telling stories that fit every racial stereotype that they've been fed for years. These fantasies of persecution get amplified and accepted and re-told so many times that idiots like Smollett think it is as common as convenience stores. And so they are utterly shocked when they try to get in on the action and everyone screams "Bullshit".

        1. Mike Parsons   2 years ago

"“While Minhaj admitted to her version of the prom events, he homed in on the “emotional truth” of the situation"

Why do you think millenials and gen Z wokesters often cite current conditions as the country being irremediably racist, with concern that race relations are in a terrible place...

Its because of this shit. They see every propaganda TV show telling them this is all pervasive, and they hear "emotional truths" from the true believer propagandists. Despite America and the west being the most tolerant and accepting of all things involving all races (and apparently made up genders) than the world has ever been for all of existence, by a long shot.

Victimhood became a currency, and blaming whitey became popular

          1. Elmer Fudd the CHUD 2: Steampunk Boogaloo   2 years ago

            ‘Emotional truth’ = Factual lie

        2. NOYB2   2 years ago

"Islam" is not a race, it is an ideology. And it is perfectly reasonable to discriminate against it, just like Islam calls to discriminate against others.

    2. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 years ago

Most comedians will exaggerate stories for their acts, but like Parsons said, Minaj doesn't do it for comedy purposes, he does it to slag the US while benefitting from the very system he criticizes. Like a lot of commie "comedians," his purpose is to tear the country down through the dialectic, not try and make people laugh. "Applause" comedy is the worst kind of comedy there is.

      1. Mike Parsons   2 years ago

        "“Applause” comedy "

        1. Ersatz   2 years ago

I hope the writer’s strike never ends, but the late night shows do.

            1. damikesc   2 years ago

Given how much they no longer make (Corden lost $20M annually). Jimmy Fallon's show made more in 2018 than all of the major late night shows (i.e all outside of Gutfeld) make today combined.

              1. Elmer Fudd the CHUD 2: Steampunk Boogaloo   2 years ago

And their viewership has significantly declined. They would all be better off showing sitcom reruns or bringing in much lower priced talent. None of these hosts are worth a shit. And none of them could hold a candle to Carson.

    3. Medulla Oblongata   2 years ago

I've never seen his shows, but are these "fabricated stories" on-stage bits? Or are they from his autobiography.

I mean, I'm pretty sure Eddie Murphy's Aunt Bundy was *not* a bigfoot, and I'm pretty sure the neighbor's dog that wanted to eat the monkey sat down and had a conversation with Richard Prior (Rich may have *thought* that happened, though). It seems incongruent to use the word "fabricated stories"...they're jokes, not personal anecdotes on a Harvard application or proof of character on the campaign trail.

  4. Fist of Etiquette   2 years ago

"I think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake," said former President Donald Trump of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' six-week abortion ban...

It seems that without a notarized letter, there is never enough evidence to show a Democrat is corrupt.

      1. Elmer Fudd the CHUD 2: Steampunk Boogaloo   2 years ago

Even that wouldn’t be enough for them. But that Ford bitch spinning obvious lies with nothing to back it up about Kavanaugh is damning proof to them.

      2. Medulla Oblongata   2 years ago

A notarized *confession* in Biden's own hand, written in his own blood, would likely be dismissed as part of political witch hunt and given only "under duress".

I struggle to believe that. The agencies that have the incriminating evidence are refusing to provide it. On top of that, I think the Democrats can always count on at least a few Republicans to help them out.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 years ago

Obama's election is actually as good of a watershed as any for a lot of the Current Year bullshit we have to deal with now, although it had been mainstreamed at the university level for about 20 years prior to that. The commies really thought their historic determinism was being validated and went full speed ahead on their neo-marxist "liberation/critical theory" agenda from that point forward.

    1. Mike Parsons   2 years ago

Another funny thing, I was told they are net contributors and dont consume resources, but there is Mayor Adams saying they are in a dire situation and city resources are completely exhausted due to the migrants.

Weird. Almost like that was always a lie

      1. sarcasmic   2 years ago (edited)

You do know that “net” means an aggregation, not one specific locality, right?

By the way, why are people so anxious to end benefits while also prohibiting work? It’s almost as if they want immigrants to have no means of legally supporting themselves.

I would think people would want immigrants to get jobs. But from what I've been told that's leftist-talk. True libertarians require immigrants to have a government permission slip to work while making employers enforce immigration law.

        1. TJJ2000   2 years ago (edited)

And again, you want to simply cost shift legal workers to illegal workers who are cheaper as a business doesn't have to pay FICA or ACA regulatory costs. While shifting citizens to welfare.

              Lol.

Will you ever actually defend your ideas?

And WHY isn't there any jobs in Mexico???????????????

After all. All these immigrants voted for their "our democracy" sovereignty in Mexico too.

Maybe nobody wants known FAILURES to invade the USA. If their hard-working *sses can't make Mexico a dreamland utopia what changes about them by crossing an imaginary line?

Nothing... Welfare statistics concerning immigration show time and time again that MOST are freeloaders. Well they freeloaded Mexico into a sh*thole why would anyone want MORE of them here? Isn't there already enough citizens freeloading here? That's where your many-jobs are coming from anyways.

      2. Zeb   2 years ago

I don't think it was a lie. I'm pretty well convinced that it has been true. It may not be true any more with all the "Asylum seekers" and it's certainly not true in NY right now.

        1. JesseAz   2 years ago

The studies showing it to be true mix legal and illegal. Legal migrants on work visas come holding a job and lose visas if they don't maintain the job listed on their visa. This is not true of illegal immigrants.

It has never been true for that class of immigration. Study after study shows asylum claims (and they get work visas) are a net loss. The money spent on them is much greater than what they contribure in taxes.

No matter what happens to those union jobs, the union bosses will be dining on steak and lobster tonight. Washing it down with expensive champagne and scotch.

Union rank and file members too fucking stupid to understand that.

        1. Medulla Oblongata   2 years ago

This is a story from my childhood. My father worked for a major manufacturer and was one of the go-to negotiators when UAW contracts were being discussed.

The union leadership at one plant in a small town--it was a major employer in the town--was holding firm against changes management wanted. Management had cleared most of the hurdles to getting a deal struck, but for two items: 1) Management wanted the union to be on the same health plan that management was on, and 2) the normal 2-week shutdown for plant maintenance was no longer needed, because it was being done in 1-week (modernizations at the plant had reduced overall maintenance time).

At this point, management told union leadership that the deal was now take-it-or-leave-it, and that if a contract was not reached, the plant would be closed, as it was the poorest performing plant among the group of plants producing the same parts.

Leadership never even took the deal the membership, saying "Our members will never agree to this." The plant closed.

Union members complained that they never had a say in the matter and begged management to let them sign the deal.

Plant laid off something like 450 workers, maintained a minimum contractual output, and was sold off. I think it's now a Japanese subsidiary and a shell of its former self.

    2. Davy C   2 years ago

In all seriousness, that's a bad idea from the worker's standpoint. If the company goes under they lose their jobs *and* take a huge hit on the pension.

What else would you expect from a Kamala Harris donor?

I'm a bit disappointed in myself for not including Trump in my usual list of famous straight bros who like abortion because they want to "crush as much pussy" as possible: Andrew Cuomo (resigned in disgrace for being a creep), Bill Clinton (known cheater, accused rapist), John Edwards (cheated on his cancer patient wife), Eliot Spitzer (whoremonger), Harvey Weinstein (convicted rapist), Joss Whedon (stereotypical straight male "feminist")...

It's possible to think abortion should be legal in some circumstances while retaining the ability to see right through Whedon-esque Hey look at me, I'm one of the good guys, I support abortion because I respect women soooooooooooooooo much! posturing.

Just look at our resident abortion fanatic Buttplug. He objectifies women in a way that would make Larry Flynt blush. (Of course he namedrops Flynt as one of his heroes.)

      1. Stuck in California   2 years ago

One of these things has nothing to do with the other.

It's not a federal issue -- a Constitutional question. That's what the Supreme Court ruled on.

Whether legislators in the individual states are appropriately restrictive or permissive, or whether their approach allows their political enemies to vilify them, is a completely different debate. One I'm not taking a side in, BTW.

        1. TJJ2000   2 years ago (edited)

They ruled that the US Constitution doesn’t apply as long as there’s ‘potential’ life somewhere. Yes; No joke. That’s exactly what they ruled.

The only reason Roe v Wades time-framing was Constitutionally baseless was it was already too Pro-Life. They should've ruled every individual has every right to eject or keep whatever items are in their *own* bodies. Ejecting isn't killing and playing the 'potential' game is not only UN-Constitutional it just excuses the power-mad public to start pimping out people's bodies as incubators.

          1. Davy C   2 years ago

They should not have ruled on that because they were not asked to rule on that.

            Ejecting isn’t killing

Bull. At the age most abortions are performed, it's killing just as surely as ejecting you from an airplane at 20,000 feet or from the South Pole research station in the middle of July would be.

            1. TJJ2000   2 years ago

Ejection doesn't happen at 20,000 feet. Care to make up more delusions to fit your narrative?

"They say they are at a disadvantage compared with nonunion automakers like Tesla, which dominates the sales of electric cars."

Well, there is one easy fix to that problem...become a nonunion automaker. Unions are a parasite that will eventually kill it's host (see also: public education). If the "Big 3" are really hoarding that much in profits while still charging consumers extremely high "sticker price", it is on the consumer to demand they lower their price, not the employees to extort the employers for "their fair share" of those profits.

    1. Don't look at me!   2 years ago

According to the union, labor is only 5% of the cost of a car……

        1. A Thinking Mind   2 years ago

You've got to pay salespeople, too. And delivery drivers. And administrative assistants. Probably plenty of other workers who are contributing to the cost of the vehicle by the time it's sold.

And I'm still calling bullshit even if we limit this inquiry to the auto assembly workers themselves. I imagine they're still making much more than 5% of the final point of sale cost of the vehicle, if for no other reason than I don't trust the union to accurately report that number.

        1. JFree   2 years ago (edited)

The US taxpayer did not bail anyone out. That was done by debt. Everyone who asserts that ‘taxpayers paid for this or that’ for anything in the last generation (the last time we had even one year of a balanced budget ie paid by taxes) or so is a grifter. ALL incremental spending is paid for by debt – a fraudulent cashout refi – on property you don’t even own.

But will they back him when no longer annointed by God? We shall see if Strong Man is stronger than their principles.

    1. TJJ2000   2 years ago

The Pro-Life mob really belongs to the left in all aspects / ideology. It was founded by the Democrats-at-large (Catholic Religion). Republican voter majority supported Roe v Wade as does Trump and Stossel. I'd say it's a pretty good marker for Power-Mad Republicans to watch out for like DeSantis.

    2. Bill Godshall   2 years ago

After Trump secures the GOP nomination, he'd be wise to
      - point out his 3 SCOTUS Justices who struck down Roe v Wade,
      - criticize Congressional legislation to ban abortion nationwide (e.g. Lindsey Graham's stupidly timed bill in 2022 that helped Democrats gain a dozen US House seats and a US Senate seat),
      - criticize DeSantis' 6 week abortion ban (before many females realize they are pregnant) as denying women's basic rights, and
      - reassert his support for abortion exceptions in cases of rape, incest and the woman's health.

That should help Trump gain many more female voters in 2024.

Anti abortion extremists (and extremism) within the GOP have been the key reason why Democrats won many purple districts and states in 2022.

Trump knows that he'll still get the vast majority of votes by those who identify as "pro life".

            2. Foo_dd   2 years ago

the point was that that is neither constitutional nor limited. it is violating the natural rights of women to supposedly protect the negative rights of a theoretical future person, through the growth of the power of the government and the erosion of natural rights.

and the real kicker, is that most people want to allow for some level of exceptions that happen to correlate with the reality of when almost all abortions are performed. the whole late term abortion thing is extremely rare and is universally done to protect the life of the mother. (women don't like to get fat for 6 months just to kill the baby later.) so, the whole exercise is a bloat of government interference for no real change.

I came across a news report on this earlier claiming that since 1970 productivity has increased 65% while wages have only increased 17%. The implication they are trying for is that the workers are working harder and faster now without increases in pay. It completely ignores the reason for those productivity increases being due to heavy capital investment to modernize and automate these factories.

The five day week is not the ultimate, and neither is the eight hour day. It is enough to manage what we are equipped to manage and to let the future take care of itself. It will anyway. That is its habit.

Migrants who have just arrived in New York but aren't authorized to work are making ends meet by renting illegal mopeds and working for food delivery apps. The city has responded to this industriousness by cracking down harder.

Exactly why it's important to repeal the welfare state and the regulatory capture BEFORE we have open borders. Otherwise we just clothe, feed, and give medical care to a bunch of people who simply have to show up on US soil without them giving anything back.

    1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago (edited)

Surely there are more possiblities. For example, if we let people in the country on work permits, they could pay taxes and have a separate, limited fund they pay into for social services. There are many ways things could be organized differently and better short of having to completely disolve the welfare state before allowing more legal immigrants and guest workers.

What is completely nuts is, for example, Texas spending nearly $5 billion and planning to spend $5 billon more at an ineffective effort to keep immigrants out.

      1. A Thinking Mind   2 years ago

For example, if we let people in the country on work permits,

Well I'm on board with doing that! It's the 100% open borders and letting everyone claim asylum that I find problematic. My argument is against the strawman position Reason seems to support that any restriction on immigration is too much restriction.

    3. Foo_dd   2 years ago

the welfare state is the underlying problem that gets ignored when immigration comes up. access to this resource is the big reason so many are abusing the asylum process.

i also agree it should be completely dismantled, but there could be ways around it that would have us not reject the principle of the free movement of people.

step one, close the loophole that lets illegal immigrants be counted as members of a household.
step two, make work visas disgustingly easy to get, so that anyone who wants to come here and work can do so legally.
step three, in addition to the the obvious exclusions for step two, (criminal history, previous deportation) anyone who has had a failed bid for asylum. there needs to be a consequence for this abuse. make the false asylum seekers some of the few people who are restricted.

We could simply normalize our immigration law with that of Mexico (the lists below are available at a number of different sites, and I cannot claim I verified any of them):

Mexico welcomes only foreigners who will be useful to Mexican society:

        * Foreigners are admitted into Mexico "according to their possibilities of contributing to national progress." (Article 32)

        * Immigration officials must "ensure" that "immigrants will be useful elements for the country and that they have the necessary funds for their sustenance" and for their dependents. (Article 34)

        * Foreigners may be barred from the country if their presence upsets "the equilibrium of the national demographics," when foreigners are deemed detrimental to "economic or national interests," when they do not behave like good citizens in their own country, when they have broken Mexican laws, and when "they are not found to be physically or mentally healthy." (Article 37)

        * The Secretary of Governance may "suspend or prohibit the admission of foreigners when he determines it to be in the national interest." (Article 38)

Mexican authorities must keep track of every single person in the country:

        * Federal, local and municipal police must cooperate with federal immigration authorities upon request, i.e., to assist in the arrests of illegal immigrants. (Article 73)

        * A National Population Registry keeps track of "every single individual who comprises the population of the country," and verifies each individual's identity. (Articles 85 and 86)

        * A national Catalog of Foreigners tracks foreign tourists and immigrants (Article 87), and assigns each individual with a unique tracking number (Article 91).

Foreigners with fake papers, or who enter the country under false pretenses, may be imprisoned:

        * Foreigners with fake immigration papers may be fined or imprisoned. (Article 116)

        * Foreigners who sign government documents "with a signature that is false or different from that which he normally uses" are subject to fine and imprisonment. (Article 116)

Foreigners who fail to obey the rules will be fined, deported, and/or imprisoned as felons:

        * Foreigners who fail to obey a deportation order are to be punished. (Article 117)

        * Foreigners who are deported from Mexico and attempt to re-enter the country without authorization can be imprisoned for up to 10 years. (Article 118)

        * Foreigners who violate the terms of their visa may be sentenced to up to six years in prison (Articles 119, 120 and 121). Foreigners who misrepresent the terms of their visa while in Mexico -- such as working with out a permit -- can also be imprisoned.

Under Mexican law, illegal immigration is a felony. The General Law on Population says,

        * "A penalty of up to two years in prison and a fine of three hundred to five thousand pesos will be imposed on the foreigner who enters the country illegally." (Article 123)

        * Foreigners with legal immigration problems may be deported from Mexico instead of being imprisoned. (Article 125)

        * Foreigners who "attempt against national sovereignty or security" will be deported. (Article 126)

Mexicans who help illegal aliens enter the country are themselves considered criminals under the law:

        * A Mexican who marries a foreigner with the sole objective of helping the foreigner live in the country is subject to up to five years in prison. (Article 127)

        * Shipping and airline companies that bring undocumented foreigners into Mexico will be fined. (Article 132)

      2. Medulla Oblongata   2 years ago

I'd support, say, a 5-year work visa that is non-renewable (but during your work-visa period you are free to apply for citizenship) for as many unskilled laborers as may be needed. The work-visa holders would have to otherwise comply with all applicable labor law (taxes, minimum wage, OSHA training, etc.), and any felony offense (and certain misdemeanors, as may be decided) voids the work visa and overstaying the visa is a felony, with punishment being summary deportation and barring any future visa re citizenship request.

Second, children born to work visa holders are not US citizens, but rather citizens of the country of their parents.

And finally, work-visa holders are not eligible for any social welfare benefits, except possibly acute (not chronic) illness and/or injury treatment as may be needed at an ER.

  46. A Thinking Mind   2 years ago

Aside: Ken Paxton was acquitted on every article of impeachment. I followed a good bit of that trial, but by no means all of it.

The alleged bad act was apparently favor-peddling to a guy named Nathan Paul, who allegedly gave a job to a woman Paxton was having an affair with. They never really connected the tissue on those allegations to my taste. It seems Paxton had received a $25,000 donation from this guy, out of the over $6,000,000 he raised for his campaign, and this guy donated to multiple candidates. The idea that he was in this guy's pocket was questionable.

The real reason this impeachment was pushed forward seems to be that Paxton was trying to use his own department to examine the veracity of a federal investigation. Even the hard-core conservatives are law-and-order types who absolutely refuse to believe the FBI is a corrupt institution and they thought it was bogus that the FBI might be conspiring to do awful things. Incidentally, the last three defendants in the Whitmer "kidnapping" plot were acquitted last week as well-don't know why I felt that was worth mentioning.

Ultimately, it seems like Paxton was attacked for pushing back against the "Deep State." And when I say Deep State, I don't mean to imply there's a dozen dark-clad men in a smoke filled room who control everything in the country. The deep state is the entrenched bureaucracy, people who aren't directly answerable to voters and continue working in government positions across administrations, and they wield power in those positions and they naturally have their own preferences that don't necessarily match those of their chief executive.

Because they owe their livelihood to the fact that there's a vast bureaucratic state, they are defensive about any attacks to the legitimacy of the bureaucratic state. I won't even say it's malicious, it's a natural tendency, a need to believe that you're a good person doing good things in your work, so a threat to the status quo is attack on your own values. For that reason they tend to try to sail a steady course across elections, ignoring the will of executives and preferring to support people who are willing to play along with them. When there's a disrupter elected to a high executive position, someone who doesn't value the apparatus of the bureaucracy, the bureaucracy assumes they must be corrupt because they're trying to destroy everything they see as good and proper.

This is the problem with having such massive, overwhelming, overreaching government powers. It resists even doing the will of the voters because it is an entity unto itself. Even though everyone in the executive department derives their power from the executive, they push back against policies they don't like. He can fire them for failing to do what they're ordered to do, but then they retaliate with a months-long inquiry into basically everything he's ever done, and, if nothing else, it slows him down.

And you know, ultimately, it doesn't matter if Paxton was corrupt or not. The hearings were run in a very orderly fashion, with criminal rules of procedure and a criminal threshold of "Beyond a reasonable doubt." Rules of evidence for criminal trials were followed, witnesses were presented by lawyers for direct examination and then cross-examined by the other side. For my view, it was an attempt to present as objective a picture as possible, without the level of posturing you typically see in any Congressional hearing. Yes, there were rhetorical flourishes by the lawyers, but it wasn't about getting on a pedestal and creating soundbites, both sides were putting on a proper case based on the facts.

And the impeachment vote still went down almost exclusively on party lines. On 14 of the 16 charges, every single Democrat voted to convict, and 16 Republicans voted to acquit on every single charge. It was entirely political despite all the efforts to run an unbiased hearing in a criminal fashion.

And I think that's going to be a preview of what happens in any trial involving Trump: you will be able to predict how any juror will vote on the charges based not on the facts presented, not on the quality of the arguments, not on the legal issues as presented, but on their voting records.

As a special twist, the attorney for the "whistleblowers" is connected to the Bush family, and has been representing them pro bono for three years now. As you might recall, Paxton absolutely trounced Jeb's son, George P., in the Texas AG primary, effectively ending that family's near-60 year run in politics with a whimper.

So this whole effort definitely has the stink of the spook/globalist faction of the GOP all over it.

      1. A Thinking Mind   2 years ago

That may have been part of it, but for me, the least interesting and most tenuous part of it. There were some loose insinuations that this was done in the interest of getting a third generation Bush into the office and referencing the name of Johnny Sutton, a lawyer who had worked for George W. both in Texas and in the DOJ.

But Paxton's team didn't need to prove anything about whether these subordinates were coordinating with the Bush camp anyway, just whether Paxton had legitimate grounds to fire them. Beyond that there was never going to be proof of direct contact with Bush, and conversations specifically with Sutton were protected. There are some interesting questions, though, about their attempt to hire Sutton to represent them in their personal capacities while also trying to get Sutton hired to represent the AG's office, as if they were actively trying to create a conflict of interest. But the connections to the Bush name seemed like a side show.

It just came down to a bunch of attorneys for the AG's office who had a significant policy disagreement, and decided that Paxton was breaking the law because, in their view, he wasn't doing what was in the best interest of the public. That's not grounds for impeachment or a criminal charge, it's a political issue to be settled via political mechanisms. Impeachment is a tool for an issue that is too urgent and too important to wait on election cycles.
