Brickbat: You Can't Say That on Campus

Officials at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville have agreed to pay $80,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by Maggie DeJong, a graduate art therapy student, claiming the university violated her First Amendment rights. The school ordered DeJong to have no contact, even "indirect communication," with three students who complained that statements she posted on social media or made in classroom and informal discussions defending conservative or Christian positions were "harassment" or "discrimination." This included retweeting someone commenting on the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol who said "We cannot destroy this country like BLM riots!" The university also agreed that professors in the art therapy program would undergo First Amendment training and to revise the student handbook to reflect that students with varying religious and political views are welcome in the program.

On another note, damn she's hot.
I'm making $90 an hour working from home. Everybody must try this job now by just using this website... http://www.Payathome7.com

Hot? Eh. She is cute but that's about as far as I'm willing to go.
Different people have different tastes. Blondes tend to remind me of my little sisters, so I can see that others might think her hot, but I'm not reacting.
I get paid over $220 per hour working from home with 2 kids at home. I never thought I would be able to do it but my best friend earns over $35k a month doing this and she convinced me to try.For Details

ex-wife. never again.
I still find myself attracted to women who look like my ex-, and likewise actresses. The imprinting runs deep...
Maggie DeJong, a graduate art therapy student,
She's cute, but forever a barista.
If there's one thing the world needs it's more art therapist-baristas.
That comment has departed.
Too old for Plug, too young for me.
Wow wa we wa! Very nice! I like!
...professors in the art therapy program would undergo First Amendment training and to revise the student handbook to reflect that students with varying religious and political views are welcome in the program.
Lol, that's gonna leave a mark.
Those handbook revisions are a court ordered lie.
At least we can all agree that the Amish can be shunned and ostracized, can't we?
With the Amish, it never would have got to the level of social media posts. "Not in The Bible, doncha know, Yay-cob."
🙂
😉
And forgo class trips to places like Lancaster, PA to
gawk atlearn about the Amish. Was a reply to Jerry, damn you Reason!
I'm still going to laugh at her for getting a graduate degree in "art therapy".
What's your degree in?
How, exactly, would a court even enforce a ban on "indirect communication"? Asking for a friend.
The school ordered DeJong to have no contact, even "indirect communication,"
The school, not a court.
But your question is still valid.
The jokes don't come with a roadmap.
lolz
This wasn't even *checks Reason bylines* censorship-- let alone a first amendment violation!
Universities are the incubators of future policy.
Since progressives largely took over the administration (and faculty hiring) of post secondary education, they want to be “the man” or whatever passes for person or persons in charge, and impose their bien pensant upon the rest of us. Ditto for media, government agencies, entertainment, mainline churches, and increasingly professional sports and corporations
I believe that covers every institution in our culture except for nuclear families. What is being promulgated (because there doesn’t seem to be a lot of actual “teaching “ going on) in our public schools is addressing that.
All in the name of idealism, which I believe is the most dangerous notion that ever existed.
does the degree make one an artist or a therapist?
Depends whether she gets paid on commission or by the patient-hour.
Though she probably ends up doing the weather on some local TV affiliate.
She was right in this instance, and the university wrong.
It generates the impression of being a professional therapist in the mind of the observer.
Two questions.
1. What the heck is “art therapy”? Is our economy really in need of art therapists?
2. She was even prohibited from “indirect communication” with these other students. How is that even possible? How can you stop indirect communication?
Help me understand this – but how can she or anyone else avoid “indirect contact” with unknown people? There is nothing in the article to indicate that she had had ANY contact with any of the three people who claimed to have felt triggered by her tweets or comments. If they happened to see her social media posts or happened to attend the same classes or meetings where participants discussed issues, I don’t see how that constitutes “contact” any more than being in the same city at the same time would. Then there’s the more important issue of “being triggered” to which my response would be, “Get over it or stay in your safe spaces. Either way I couldn’t care less.”
