Brickbat: Barking Orders

The Lorain, Ohio, police department says it is investigating after Officer Elliott Palmer shot and killed a family's Labrador retriever mix named Dixie. Bodycam video that started after Palmer was already on the scene shows a woman standing in a residential yard trying to control at least three dogs. One dog walked up to Palmer. But Palmer pointed at it and possibly spoke (Palmer had his bodycam muted), and it walked away. Another dog broke away from the woman and ran up to Palmer, who shot the dog and continued to fire at it as the dog limped away.

As a long time hunting dog owner this women needed to put those dogs inside. She can’t control them. As for shooting the dog, it’s hard to tell if it was aggressive or not. Most people have no idea how to train a dog.

The woman was confused since in most situations, she’s the heavy. The suburbia Boyle’s Gas Law where some extend their defensible space onto the property of others and public land. Dogs are usually considered property where the jurisdiction will end up paying a few hundred bucks for what was an untrained pet. If the officer didn’t have the personal skills to deal with a pack of dogs and didn’t have an effective non-lethal means of deterrence such as OC spray, he shouldn’t have gotten out of his cruiser. The street’s hard surface behind his target can result in missed and passed-through shots skipping down the neighborhood. There is a whole lot wrong with this incident.

Yup. Watch the video. Typical Reason fashion, the more critical details get fudged or conspicuously omitted. The article says “a woman standing in a residential yard trying to control at least three dogs” but it doesn’t say anything about leashes… or the lack thereof and the dog does run the length of the small property and “makes contact” between the sidewalk and in the street, which in my burb, is Village property (except when it comes time to mow or fix anything underneath it, of course).
Woman, voluntarily or not, lets dogs between aggressive and assertive loose in the neighborhood, one gets shot on public property. Shooter pays original purchase price of dog up to $350. Shooter’s occupation is immaterial. Case closed.
It’s almost like Reason’s reporting on these topics is to condition people to act irrationally emotionally and unlibertarian in response to officers.
I had watched the video to get “the other half of the story.” The dog was shot due to a bad owner coupled with an LEO that had neither the skills nor tools to properly handle the situation. The silver lining is that there will be 33% less dog shit on the neighboring lawns.
Some may say bad optics, but clearly the red dot did its job.
I agree that the woman is not entitled to any more than the nominal cash value of the dog, and maybe not even that, since she failed to keep it on her property or under her control.
But I'd also say no one is entitled to a government job; even if their behavior is perfect. Part of the officer's job is to earn and keep the trust of the public and if he's made half the town want him fired maybe he should quit. Almost all of us could have, would have, and in fact already have handled nearly identical situations without shooting the dog. Even if one puts zero value on the dog, discharging a firearm on a residential street endangers people and disturbs the peace.
Yeah, shot the dog on her property or not? Not everyone knows how to train a dog and anyone who can train a dog, including police, can train it to act like an attack is a friendly gesture or to genuinely be perpetrating a normal action or friendly gesture until triggered.
At the same time, de rigueur in Libertopia: if he shot her dog on her property, no one should be surprised if the story ends in a gun fight and the officer gets hanged as responsible for precipitating a gun fight that caused any/all deaths.
Great article, Mike. I appreciate your work, I’m now creating over $35,400 dollars each month simply by doing a simple job online! I do know You currently making a lot of greenbacks online from $28,400 dollars, its simple online operating jobs.

Coward or psychopath?
That pup was asking for it, limping away like that.
Do you believe the dog was thinking about turning his life around and maybe going to dog obedience school?
The dog can do a convincing “play dead.”
Coward AND psychopath.
Yes.
Wait to see if the cop files for disability due to his PTSD following the incident. Many cops have a crippling fear of dogs.
They should be conditioned out of that by being the training dummies for the K9 units.
The incident will dog him for the rest of his life.
He'll definitely be on a short leash for his next patrol.
Unless the woman whose dog he shot is in charge, then she'll just have a bunch of borderline aggressive/violent, low IQ, sociopaths trotting around her and responding to her whims but perpetually just outside her control and willing to go full speed across someone's yard at a moment's notice.
Circle of life.
Hello,
The Lorain, Ohio, police department is conducting an investigation following an incident where Officer Elliott Palmer shot and killed a Labrador retriever mix named Dixie. The incident occurred when Officer Palmer arrived at a residential yard and encountered a woman who was attempting to control at least three dogs.
The details of the situation leading up to the shooting are not provided in the given information. It is crucial to understand that investigations into such incidents typically aim to gather all available evidence, including body camera footage, eyewitness accounts, and other relevant information, to determine the sequence of events and the circumstances that led to the use of lethal force.
Police officers are trained to handle various situations, including encounters with aggressive or potentially dangerous animals. The decision to use lethal force against an animal is typically based on the perceived threat to the safety of the officer, other individuals, or the animal itself. However, these situations can be complex and require careful examination to ensure that the response was appropriate and within the bounds of the law.
The investigation will likely aim to ascertain whether Officer Palmer's actions were justified given the circumstances and if any policies or protocols were followed during the encounter. Additionally, the department may review whether there were any other possible alternatives to the use of lethal force in handling the dogs.
It is essential to await the completion of the investigation and any official statements from the Lorain, Ohio, police department before drawing conclusions about the incident. Investigations of this nature often take time to ensure a thorough and impartial examination of the facts.
In cases like this, the incident may also prompt discussions about animal control protocols , officer training regarding handling animals, and community relations. These discussions can help improve understanding and practices for handling similar situations in the future.
Thank you, robot.
seriously fuck you, bot. dogs are not for shooting.
Yes. What a bunch of hollow fuckwits in here. Clever, snide keyboard sociopaths. I’m for a society where police don’t kill or cause harm due to objectively stupid decisions. Fuck the lies about “split-second decisions.” If you can’t do the job with common sense and empathy, go push a broom.
jeebus fucking christ I hope someone pulls his skin off ... slowly.
Three unleashed and out of control animals are running loose in public - first one and then a second approaches the officer who had the right to shoot both of them, but only shot one. She should have thanked him for not taking out both dogs.
Yes, poor cop. We need more authoritarian violence, excellent point. Sorry I was expecting more given all the tools and training that are available.
See? Another reason cop shops that cannot find an insurer against murderous violence and vandalism need to be defunded, privatized or shut down altogether. This is the RFK2 and Mobilization for Surrender position on nuclear power plants--those generators every totalitarian fanatic wants done away with because they make the US too difficult to attack and disarm. OR politicians could quit ordering cops to go places, meet peaceful people and dogs--and kill them.
