'Mamas for DeSantis' Is Proof: The DeSantis Campaign Is Too Online
Casey DeSantis' "Mamas for DeSantis" ad goes all in on the culture war instead of focusing on Ron DeSantis' strong record on school choice and COVID policy.
As the election cycle heats up, Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis wants you to know that the left is coming for your children, and Ron DeSantis is the only person who can save them.
She launched "Mamas for DeSantis"—a national version of the group she founded during the Florida governor's 2022 reelection campaign—on Thursday, releasing an ad that describes the left-wing assault on America's children with breathless fervor.
"When you come after our kids, we fight back, because there's nothing we won't do to protect our children. They're not yours," Casey DeSantis narrates over smoky footage of crying toddlers in masks, clips of Pride parades, and photos of Lia Thomas and other transgender athletes. "We will not allow you to exploit their innocence to advance your agenda."
The ad, which comes on the heels of a now-deleted campaign video targeting Donald Trump's comparatively pro-LGBT record, solidifies DeSantis as the candidate of the too online.
From the beginning, the DeSantis campaign has been marked by an almost singular focus on culture-war issues. Generally eschewing economic proposals, DeSantis instead seems more interested in ginning up support from right-wing Twitter trolls than a broad coalition of Republican voters.
This was made clear by Thursday's campaign ad; it approaches subjects that should be relative slam-dunks for DeSantis—school choice and opposition to COVID school closures and mask mandates—with an off-puttingly conspiratorial edge. Instead of focusing on DeSantis' actual policy record, it instead makes a Helen Lovejoy-esque plea to think of the children—complete with a photo of a little girl with a kinkster in a leather dog mask.
While the ad was surely a hit with Libs of TikTok fans, it's not exactly clear how the messaging is supposed to attract voters who aren't glued to the right-wing internet. Instead of leaning into his previous reputation as a saner—and more electable—executor of Trumpist policy, DeSantis is now trying to cast himself as an even more right-wing version of Trump.
But instead of gaining new support from Trump devotees, DeSantis will likely end up alienating the same voters he most needs to attract—Republicans who can barely stomach supporting someone as sleazy and bombastic as Donald Trump.
Unfortunately for DeSantis, while culture war issues dominate the far left and far right—the loudest voices on online platforms—average voters are consistently less interested. Time and time again, polling shows that economic issues dominate voters' interest, with concern over government leadership, immigration, and crime following behind.
DeSantis doesn't need to sensationalize to get an easy win on the kinds of issues Mamas for DeSantis is presumably focused on. Education has been a solid topic for Republicans in recent years—especially as the COVID school closures favored by Democrats can be solidly blamed for disastrous declines in educational outcomes. A calmer, more effective ad would focus on DeSantis' consistent opposition to COVID-19 school closures and his solid record advancing school choice in Florida. But that wouldn't feel quite as nice as owning the libs.

The Left ARE coming for your children. They say so unabashedly. Disbelieve them at your children’s peril.
But to be fair and modern and libertine and everything we should agree to shared custody.

Florida oranges man? Lol.
I think it was Jesse who came up with that one, or at least, I think that’s who I picked it up from.
Nah. Someone else came up with it but I’ve used it a few times. Same with White Cite.
Both the Left AND the Right are coming for your children. They both support public schools, and making taxpayers pay for indoctrinating “our” children. They only disagree with the DETAILS about what political indoctrination should be forced onto “our” children.
Only libertarians generally or often support separating school and state!
+100000000… Except; DeSantis & Republicans in general does support School Choice. Perhaps not a perfect separation of education and the state but definitely closer than what the Left is pushing by massive leaps.
Fair enough!
Yeah, “choice”. DeSantis and company are happy to let you send your kids to any school… as long as it follows their rules. Just because they like to bleat about “Freedom!” doesn’t mean they actually believe in it.

has she been wrong yet?
Yes. She was wrong about children’s clinics performing gender-affirming surgery on minors.
Her “investigation” consisted of talking to a receptionist who knew nothing on the phone, and then … well, that was it.
Cite?
He can’t because he’s lying.
Meanwhile Reuters says 14,726 minors started hormone treatment, 4,780 started puberty blockers, 56 genital reassignment surgeries and at least 776 mastectomies were performed in the United States on patients ages 13 to 17 “diagnosed” with gender dysphoria between 2017 and 2021.
And the above numbers are only insurance claims. They don’t include “treatments” paid for privately.
Mike knows this and is being deliberately and purposefully dishonest.
Because he’s a worthless lying cunt masquerading as a human being.
Of course. When has a left wingers ever cared about reality? They know as long as the media continues to lie their own lies will never be held against them.

I’ll bet you cannot cite any of this information that is supposedly “everywhere”.
Here Laursen admits information has to be “everywhere” for him to admit it is true. This is an admission he only believes what the let-media supports even though he pretends not to be a leftist.
It’s revealing what people admit if you just pay attention.
It’s more that he won’t read than that he can’t read.

A few observations about his ridiculous post:
1. It’s obvious he either has most people muted or just flat out ignores half the posts that refute his talking point.
2. He’s so delusional he thinks most people here are right wing and he’s actually libertarian.
3. Trump so broke his brain he thought posting a picture of him with a bunch of beauty pageant, I’m sorry “scholarship”, contestants was some kind of gotcha.
4. He thinks that augmentation is equal to mutilation. And is disingenuous enough to pretend that conservatives never outraged at teenage girls getting implants. Never mind the fact that the number of underage girls NOT IN HOLLYWOOD getting boob jobs is probably minuscule.
Just an all around horrible performance from Mr. Laursen on the field of play that day.
You continue to lie, why? Jazz Jennings had surgery at 17. The Whitehouse admitted to it on their website. Whistleblowers have said it occurs. You continue to lie.
Laursen, Laursen, Laursen. You’ve been shown multiple times over that this is indeed happening to minors. Hell, let’s just start with Jazz Jennings, dipwad. Jazz was under 18 when Jazz got the surgeries.
Care to gaslight (albeit poorly) more, dipshit?
I’ll respond to your question on behalf of Mike and the answer is yes.

Desantis’s campaign has been on a path of mostly setting itself on fire. From the sound of it, this thing is actually a positive.
Not really sure how this “too online” narrative got crafted, but even more confused by how that label is being applied to him rejecting issues in public life. The LGBT excesses are actually an issue for people in real life, even those who don’t touch any right-wing online content.
If Reason wants to pretend to be a libertarian rag, then they need to actually attack politicians on libertarian grounds. Shit like this is just showing hate and announcing progressive allegiance
Emma’s right about the “too online” thing (stopped clock and all), and you’re absolutely correct that the campaign is lighting itself on fire.
I find it ironic that they keep throwing out the left’s “cult” talking point, because it’s almost invariably someone with #DeSantis, #DeSantis2024, #NeverTrump, alligator emoji, etc in their profile, and they become hysterically defensive whenever the CAMPAIGN is criticized.
DeSantis shill: “Trump has stupid hair and only his cult likes him!”
Normal person: “You’re not very good at your job.
DeSantis is down 30+ points and has lost 20+ points since you started campaigning for him.”
DeSantis supporter: “YOU SUCK AT YOUR JOB, CULTIST!”
Who did Team DeSantis think his base was? It’s mostly MAGA folk, and their strategy has been to attack Trump and MAGA relentlessly for months. They’ve made no changes (except sending the wife out to campaign instead of Ron).
Makes no sense if it’s genuinely intended to win an election, rather than, say, sabotage Trump’s 2024 run and DeSantis’ own political future.
I don’t know who’s running the social media astroturf, could be an unconnected PAC, but I do know Christina Pushaw was Zelensky’s and Saakashvili’s handler prior to becoming DeSantis’ right hand woman…
Lots of things are issues for someone. “Too online” means not focusing on “bread and butter” issues such as inflation.
You are “too online”.
Do you really want to talk about inflation?
Mike got $0.50 for that comment.
Too bad it was only worth $0.25 compared to last year.

In this day and age with what we see in the LGBTQI2MAP+ community, being more pro LGBTQI2MAP+ and less sane is called being pro LGBTQI2MAP+.
I’m still ok with the first three letters.
All the letters are in my alphabet soup, but it doesn”t go chasing me around the house trying to make me participate in things I don’t believe in and punishing me when I don’t. So yeah, I’m OK with the alphabet too.
So then we need DeSatan to out-Trump Trump, right?
Well Hell’s Bells, just pass some laws against, and rally the internet trolls and the Proud Boys for some street fights against being illegal sub-humans, trannies, accused “groomers”, abortionists, gays, heathens, infidels, vaxxers, mask-wearers, atheists, Jews, witches, or, the very WORST of them all, being one of those accused of STEALING THE ERECTIONS OF OUR DEAR LEADER, right, right-wing wrong-nuts? ANY methods are OK, so long as they are used against the CORRECT enemies, am I right?

I’m not against someone making suggestions on how DeSantis might appeal to a larger group of voters, he needs to figure it out. I agree trying to peel off Trump’s supporters isn’t a winning strategy. DeSantis has the policy record of successful accomplishments. Vivek is easier to listen to, since he’s hitting some upbeat notes along with more policy ideas than any three other candidates. I’m beginning to think DeSantis is going to have to wait for the next election. If he burns thru his sizeable cash pile and loses, he’s got to do some introspection. I don’t think he’s got the right people running his campaign, or he’s preventing them from expanding his appeal because of his over-eager focus on the culture wars. Definitely hit the woke mob in the mouth, but then – move on to why you’re the best pick regardless of the culture war bullshit. I think he’d make a good president, but you have to expand your voter base. The hard right is always going to support a Republican, so quit fighting for Trump’s minions. Trump’s either going to self immolate, or he’s going to win, so focus on the rest of the voters if you want the top spot. Wrestling in the mud with Trump is right where Trump wants him. If DeSantis keeps leaning into the culture wars at the expense of promoting a solid economic plan for the future and making some good, popular suggestions for changes in the Federal government to grow his own base, then between the media being all in for the Dems, and Trump’s circus, DeSantis is going to become irrelevant, just like the media wants him to be. The Marxists know if Trump gets knocked off, they’re dead meat in the next election.
“If Trump gets knocked off”
Interesting phrasing.
“DeSantis has the policy record of successful accomplishments”
LOL – I haven’t seen a single accomplishment yet.
(PS: Whoever is paying you by the word needs to reassess their payment plan.)
LOL – I haven’t seen a single accomplishment yet.
Turning Florida into a pretty solidly red state, after 20-plus years of it being an election-night disaster, and humiliating your side is pretty good.
Dear, I’m a *Libertarian*. Solidly red states are just as bad as solidly blue states. As DeFascist has demonstrated, his brand of tyranny and government interference into the lives of people and businesses is just as bad as the Democrats’ brand.
“Dear, I’m a *Libertarian*.”
Hahahahahahaha, okay
DeSantis and too many other Republican candidates are far too timid about the party’s front runner. They are in effect normalizing the former President’s behavior and doing it at their own expense. They need to be working for the majority of the people and not trying to pick up the MAGA scrapes. DeSantis is looking like a loser this cycle and like many candidates when you blow one chance you don’t get a second. He has lost 2024 and is well on his way to losing the nomination in 2028.
“working for the majority”…. The USA is NOT a Nazi-democracy.
That is working to get the votes of the majority of the people and that is how you win elections in our democracy.
No, you get the most electoral college votes.
…and they are legally bound to honor their oath of office.
Ensuring the people’s law over them (US Constitution) is upheld.
The fact that most law-enforcers in politics ignore that is the USA’s very curse.
This behavior.
What behavior is that?
Did it involve commissioning a fake dossier to frame a political opponent for colluding with Russia/China/Israel/whomever?
Did it involve getting social media companies to suppress a story about a laptop that implicated his son in a bribery scandal?
By refusing to confront the former President on when he is wrong the Republican have instead sent the message of approval that strengths the candidate they are running against. The candidates would do better to send a more neutral message that the former President’s behavior is a matter for the courts to decide.
The dossier was not fake it was unverified and much of the information in the dossier has been verified with time. Trump confidents did have extensive contacts with Russians.
There was plenty of news about the laptop. Your objections is that it did get front page headline news. Trump’s people had the laptop story and could have dumped it earlier when there would have been more time to vet the story. The campaign wanted it last minute and the much of the news media was initially skeptical.
So the media was skeptical about the laptop, but not the dossier? Why?
My recollection is that the dossier did not become public until after the election and Trump was already President. So there plenty of time to vet the information. The laptop story was dropped just before the election and so some skepticism seems natural.
Moderation4ever
By refusing to confront the former President on when he is wrong the Republican have instead sent the message of approval that strengths the candidate they are running against.
This is a revealing comment considering left wingers like “Moderation” never criticize fellow leftists. One of the key evaluations to distinguish leftists from libertarians is to apply their criticisms of the right to the left to see if they are consistent. The sad result is that all too often we identify left wingers posing as libertarians.
I have plenty of criticism for the left. I do not try to set up equivalencies but rather criticize ideas, left or right, where I think it appropriate.
LOL, bitch, you’ve never criticized the left one iota here.
The GOP has no chance of winning the presidential election without the “MAGA scrapes”. That’s why they’re going to lose—Trump supporters will not turn out for anyone but Trump, and Trump has no room to broaden his appeal.
The Republican party had four years to put the former President behind them and to work at rebuilding trust in the “MAGA” people. Their refusal to do so meant that their 2022 election performance was well below what should have been expected. The same could be true in 2024.
“A calmer, more effective ad would focus on DeSantis’ consistent opposition to COVID-19 school closures and his solid record advancing school choice in Florida.”
And he’d be accused of focusing on culture war issues. Not to mention being a theocrat and a bunch of other bad things.
And all those accusations would be true.
And yet Reason points out that Robert Kennedy is a rabid anti-vaxxer in every article, even after campaign appearances where he didn’t discuss vaccines at all.
Reason writers are so entrenched in their leftist, progressive bubbles they can’t begin to understand how much the average, sane person is fed up with all the LGBTQWERTY insanity.
The average sane person likely is unaffected by most of the LGBTQWERTY and does not care. What we, the average and sane, care about are jobs, the economy, and personal liberty.
Personal liberty is very unpopular.
Nothing says libertarian or moderate like telling everybody what they think.
I am not telling people what to think I am looking at what they tell polls or in their actions. I don’t see LGBTQ issues as the most important issues, unless a person has a direct stake in the issue.
Anyone with children in public schools has a direct stake in the issue.
This is 100% untrue. The average parent has their kids coming home and saying they may be a boy because they like camping. They are coming home with crazy ideas like “boy deers are actually female part of the year!”
If you don’t have kids, shut the fuck up because you do not know what is being passed around in average schools. If you do have school age kids, you are either ok with this or not paying attention.
I have raised kids and I was in school myself. There is always some issue that has people riled up. In my school days it was the Vietnam war and civil rights. Image the parents in my day fretting that their child might be dating someone of another race.
In my neighborhood, it was Black parents who fretted about that.

BREAKING NEWS: THE HAGUE – The Rutte IV cabinet has fallen. The #WEF devotee and comrade of German Klaus Schwab of the World Economic Forum and his Government have collapsed. The asylum talks that have been dragging on for months have torn apart the partnership between VVD, D66, CDA and CU. A last attempt to reach agreement in a crisis meeting on Friday also failed. This will enable the Netherlands to prepare for new elections, probably in the autumn. The cabinet will meet as a whole on Friday evening around 9:30 PM, after which Prime Minister Rutte will give a press conference. The government parties have been diametrically opposed to the asylum measures for some time. This week that sensitive file exploded, in which the differences between VVD and CDA on the one hand and D66 and CU on the other were large. Especially between VVD and CU, there was a lot of clashing over measures to limit family reunification. The differences have proved insurmountable. On Friday it was already noticeable that it was especially restless at the CU offices. Prior to the crisis meeting, the MPs of the smallest coalition party already gathered together, after which party leader Bikker continued to talk to the CU ministers. And after Deputy Prime Minister Schouten and State Secretary Van Ooijen left for the Ministry of General Affairs for the crisis consultation, party employees, but also Agriculture Minister Adema, continued to nervously rummage through the corridors. In recent days, numerous proposals have been discussed to get the parties back together. The last plan discussed on Friday was a so-called on and off button for family reunification. If the influx of migrants were too high, that button could be turned off. But that also did not lead to an agreement between the parties. Earlier plans were also shot down. For example, VVD and CDA suggested on Thursday to make their own initiative law for the introduction of a two-status system. In such an asylum system, migrants would be given different rights. D66 and CU saw less in such a system and did not find the idea of an initiative law attractive at all. A plan to introduce the multi-status system on the condition of an implementation test also failed due to opposition from D66 and CU. Tempers had run high in recent days after Prime Minister Rutte put a strong package of demands on the table with a show of force on Wednesday. On Thursday, the Prime Minister had backed down a bit, and the parties decided to give it another day to look at a final proposal. But that too fell, and with it the cabinet. #WEF2030Agenda #DutchFarmers #holland
For example, VVD and CDA suggested on Thursday to make their own initiative law for the introduction of a two-status system. In such an asylum system, migrants would be given different rights.
Ironically, given the hullabaloo over the US insisting that the folks from seven countries away stop in one of them, this would actually be against the ’51 UN Refugee Protocol.

It is so strange Reason writers label opposition to racial discrimination as “culture wars” so they can belittle it. Yet in other contexts they breathlessly support the left’s absurd hyper-characterizations of racial discrimination. It just goes to show they align their arguments based on who they support at the moment rather than consistently supporting principles.
They’re just a bunch of pathetic white liberals who want the “right “ people to finally like them.
Principled like the defenders of Trump’s trade policies who give credit to Biden for continuing and expanding the very same policies?
OMG! Taxing the ‘foreigners’ market at just 1/2 what domestic is … is just so, so, so unfair… /s
Has anyone that supported his trade policies criticized Biden’s continuations? I haven’t seen it.
“It just goes to show they align their arguments” … as a self-projection. It’s the #1 character trait of the left-leaning. Blame everyone else for exactly what one is up to.
Interesting that after months of hit pieces on DeSantis we get an article attacking his wife but with some actual praise for the record of the candidate himself. I think it’s safe to assume that the New Koch libertarians no longer see DeSantis as a viable threat to the Biden regime based on recent polling so they’re saving their venom for Trump or whatever Republican might somehow win the nomination.
Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Prince, and the New Koch Libertarians!

TLDR: Biden’s wife and baby daughter died. Biden lied about it repeatedly, gave interviews talking about his sex life with his deceased wife, tormented a family for decades, and then lied to people who’d lost people on 9/11 to score pity points in a speech.

The culture war only exists to those of us who live largely online. The other 85% of the country wouldn’t have a clue and would think we were crazy if we tried to explain it to them. Most people have never heard of Jusse Smollet or Bubba Wallace. Most couldn’t even name Kamala Harris as VP. The largest group of people in the country who even know Dylan Mulvaney exists are unemployed AHB distributors.
If you look at the Trending feed on Twitter it is almost all sports related with a smattering of digital currency topics. It is rare to see any political topics trending.

This is largely a bullshit pretense that makes the 20% or so in the center feel like they’re actually the vast majority.
I think the center is larger than 20%. It is a general rule that the centermost candidate win the Presidency. This is also true in election where the districts are not gerrymandered.
You’re not larger than 20%. You like to think so because it makes you feel better, though.
There are at least a couple of possibilities here.
One is that DeSantis and Co. are doing the whole “run to the right during the primary, then shift back toward the center for the general” thing, and that the economic accomplishments and such are the powder being kept dry for the latter part.
Another is that DeSantis, and even more so his beard … er, “wife” … really are batshit insane and don’t understand how obvious their compulsion to drive nails in his closet door is becoming.
If DeSantis is planning a run to the center it is going to be quite a run.
Interesting article
Make money online from home extra cash more than $18000 to $21000. Start getting paid every month Thousands Dollars online. I have received $26000 this month by just working online from home in my part time. Every person can easily do this job…….https://pay7days.blogspot.com/
DeSantis will probably not get the nomination.
When he fails the reason won’t be technical issues with his announcement. It won’t be the result of hiring the wrong people to run his campaign.
DeSantis will probably fail because Republican voters are self-sabotaging idiots who nominate toxic candidates that Dems want them to nominate. And in 2024 that means re-running the senior citizen who has been a huge asset for Democrats in every election since 2018.
#PiedPiper2ElectricBoogaloo
It doesn’t matter who the Republicans nominate at this point. There is no path to victory from here.
I am making over $30k a month working part time. I am a full time college student and just working for 3 to 4 hrs a day. Everybody must try this home online job now by just use this Following Website…….. https://workscoin1.pages.dev/
I am very disappointed with both the article and the majority of the comments.
I am a new subscriber and I was looking for intelligent discussion, not a bunch of Tweets and one-sentence replies. (And what is with all the “earn $20,000 at home” comments? This is the second article I was “treated” to these ads — isn’t there some kind of automatic filter here?)
As far as the article itself, I think that most people are uneducated about what is going on in the schools unless they do frequent on line discussion websites or are involved parents. If the author of the article objects to information being given out, I think that she should consider working for Vox instead of this website publication.
Welcome to the party! The party, sad to say, is the party of right-wing loons, mostly, who have taken over in recent years. One USED to be able to come here for thoughtful and data-driven discussions. Not so much, and more.
Be sure to be registered and logged in, and then use the “mute” button, per each offending poster. I do that for all commercial spam. Some people use it to mute those who they disagree with, also. I find it easy to just scroll past the nit-wits.
Also, if you want some thoughtful and data-driven (full of links) Libertarian commentary, with some unique insights about the intersection between tribalism and “do-gooder derogation”, see below…
The intelligent, well-informed, and benevolent members of tribes have ALWAYS been feared and resented by those who are made to look relatively worse (often FAR worse), as compared to the advanced ones. Especially when the advanced ones denigrate tribalism. The advanced ones DARE to openly mock “MY Tribe’s lies leading to violence against your tribe GOOD! Your tribe’s lies leading to violence against MY Tribe BAD! VERY bad!” And then that’s when the Jesus-killers, Mahatma Gandhi-killers, Martin Luther King Jr.-killers, etc., unsheath their long knives!
“Do-gooder derogation” (look it up) is a socio-biologically programmed instinct. SOME of us are ethically advanced enough to overcome it, using benevolence and free will! For details, see http://www.churchofsqrls.com/Do_Gooders_Bad/ and http://www.churchofsqrls.com/Jesus_Validated/ .
Then they crucified Jesus, ’cause Jesus made them look bad! ALSO because Jesus made them look bad FOR THEIR STUPID, HIDE-BOUND TRIBALISM! “The parable of the Good Samaritan” was VERY pointed, because the Samaritans were of the WRONG tribe, in the eyes of “Good Jews” of the day.
I feel your pain.
I’m a fan of Reason’s articles and podcasts. Most of its commenters, not really.
Oh darn.
I am a new subscriber and I was looking for intelligent discussion, not a bunch of Tweets and one-sentence replies.
And some of us have been hanging out here for near 20 years, so it’s entirely possible you’ve missed out on just a smidge of the background that led to some of those one-sentence replies.
No, there is not a spam filter.
We’re all vastly disappointed by Reason turning into Emote as well.
If there’s a particular discussion you want to have, start it and you’ll find that most of us are capable of joining in.
Reason use to have really good discussions, I started reading in late 90s but as the quality of the writing has dwindled to being trash, so have the comments.
Baily used to get into the comments and debate commenters who disagreed with him and probably got a few people to change their minds, and sometimes changed his mind, but then he went for hard left talkkg points and “the science” and after he kept getting destroyed by commenters in debates in the comment section he stopped. When he was presented with data that contradicted his views he ran.
Also now almost every reason article is presented in a left/Marxist framing. They use to frame articles as why freedom and capitalism is good for everyone, now it’s why x policy is bad for minorities.
Last there is a huge discrepancy in reporting, where they actively ignore things like fbi cover ups for the dems, and focus on republican dog catcher wants to ban abortions
Hasn’t quite been the same since Balko left. IMO.
Balko brought me here from his Agitator site, and honestly, I probably should have left again when he did. :-/
Balko’s a full-blown shitlib at this point. He isn’t any different from someone who comments at MSNBC.
There used to be intelligent comments here. Then Trump was elected and it’s devolved into personal attacks and team cheerleading since then.
Facts.
“When you come after our kids, we fight back, because there’s nothing we won’t do to protect our children. They’re not yours,” Casey DeSantis narrates over smoky footage of crying toddlers in masks, clips of Pride parades, and photos of Lia Thomas and other transgender athletes. “We will not allow you to exploit their innocence to advance your agenda.”
Enter the PROJECTION…
Unfortunately for DeSantis, while culture war issues dominate the far left and far right … But that wouldn’t feel quite as nice as owning the libs.
1) The left alone started the “culture war”.
2) DeSantis doesn’t propose any “culture war” only to stop it.
Notice how this article with just the last couple of lines turns this on it’s head pretending the “far right” is starting a “culture war” instead of trying to STOP the lefts culture war and then topped off with a “owning the libs” BS. OWNING others isn’t what any *real* Republican is about. That’s what the left is about. And any Republican who thinks Donald Trump was sleazy and bombastic probably isn’t much of a Republican anyways since Republicans care more about policy than name-calling to initiate a “culture war”.
The Projection in the article is plain as day.
Or he could just point out that Trump is a loon, and Biden has been unfit to lead his entire life, and more so now that he is senile.
When Emma Camp has kids and they come home confused about their gender because their teacher and friends thinks “whittling” means you are a boy, perhaps she will understand that this culture war thing maybe has some legs to it. Read through Ms Camp’s article again and note one thing missing: acknowledging that parents largely feel like their kids are being indoctrinated by people pushing values that they do not share. As far as Ms Camp is concerned, DeSantis is picking these issues out of thin air- making them up rather than responding to complaints many, many Americans have. I don’t want to be mired in culture wars, but here we will remain until people on the “Pro Liberty” side acknowledge that it is more than just the fevered dreams of icky deplorables.
I don’t want a culture war. But then, I don’t want my precious treasure taken from me to spend on a school that delivers nothing but gender-queer, marxist claptrap to my kids. And while I will continue to push for the elimination of public schooling, I can completely understand why many parents would rather just cut to the chase and fire the marxist, gender-queer assholes who are indoctrinating our kids from California to Nebraska and Florida to Minnesota.
And for the record: Reason has spent more time bitching and moaning about the pushback against this shit than pushing for free education. There are FAR more articles complaining that school librarians cannot stock gay porn in high schools than complaining about the existence of school libraries. There are far more articles angry that 2nd grade teachers “Can’t say Gay” to their kids than articles skeptical that agents of the state should be pushing ANY orthodoxy on kids in the first place.
Maybe Reason Authors don’t care if their daughter is told that her love of baseball means she must be a boy. Good on you. You live with that. But a Reasonable libertarian ought to be able to recognize that this shit is DEEPLY controversial. And even if you don’t have a problem with it, you should be willing to acknowledge that it is extremely problematic to bring this anti-liberty BS to public education, where agents of the state are placed in a position of authority over youngsters who are just one or two steps removed from being prison inmates.
Instead of CONSTANTLY shouting “This is why we need school choice,” Reason article after Reason article complains about the DeSantis reaction to it. Instead of saying “It is wrong for Public institutions to push controversial, anti-liberty bullshit down the throats of children,” article after article vilifies the only people who object.
Well, guess what, KMW? If you aren’t going to be part of the solution- hell if you barely acknowledge that there is a problem- don’t be surprised when the public turns it’s back on you. And don’t be surprised when politicians arise who serve that pent up demand. You aren’t even recognizing that demand exists, so how do you think you are going to convince people to trust your shrugs and indifference over someone who agrees that there is a problem and offers a solution- even if it is half-baked and fails to deliver liberty?
Whether the pro-liberty side acknowledges anything or not will have absolutely nothing whatever to do with remaining stuck in the culture wars. No doubt a lot of people “feel” that their children are being indoctrinated, but how is this different from the “critical race theory” narrative (for example) having some impact in the real world? There is no solution except to get government out of as much private stuff as possible. And DeSantis isn’t helping with that at all.
“No doubt a lot of people “feel” that their children are being indoctrinated, but how is this different from the “critical race theory” narrative (for example) having some impact in the real world?”
No a lot of people KNOW their children are being indoctrinated, because a lot of people watch the shit their kids come home with.
This is exactly the problem that I was calling out. People like Reason deny that this stuff is happening. They do not acknowledge that there are training programs at schools with power point presentations showing how to push “equity” into schools and how to talk to kids about their “white privilege”.
And DeSantis *is* helping with this, because he signed into law one of the better school choice packages out there. But he is also fighting back in the culture war. Ms Camp’s entire article is to bemoan the fact that DeSantis is also acknowledging what she and Reason will not- that the state is actively participating in the indoctrination of children with anti-liberty, marxist claptrap in the form of CRT-inspired instruction and gender-queer claptrap.
Ms Camp thinks it is enough to push school choice. She is wrong. And that is why DeSantis is one of the contenders for the republican ticket, not someone like Amash. And until they stop dismissing real parents concerns, while folks like DeSantis do acknowledge those concerns, Reason will not have a seat at the table. *shrug*
And a lot of people “know” what just isn’t so – like critical race theory for just one example. A lot of people know what IS so – like systemic racism in big city police departments – that many others deny. This is the very SOURCE of the culture wars! While I agree that DeSantis has contributed politically in a few cases like school choice, my point was that he is not helping to tone down the pointless culture wars by “fighting back.” The solution to indoctrination in public schools is to eliminate public schools, not to change the indoctrination to a different narrative. The more issues government tries to meddle in, the more dangerous the culture wars become and the less sanity there will be in public policy.
but how is this different from the “critical race theory” narrative (for example) having some impact in the real world?
There’s a pretty big fucking empirical impact here, considering how many global megacorporations have their funding lines based on whether they promote CRT’s premises.
I worded that poorly. I meant that emotionally-charged issues from both “sides” in the culture wars ARE having a big impact on the world and that there is no difference between the two examples I gave in either the harm they are doing or the irrationality of the proposed responses demanded of the government. The solutions lie elsewhere than with Governors or legislatures.
They’re both having real impact in the world? Companies are constantly pandering to slivers of the consumer public, sometimes to the point they’re killing their brand. Banks are collapsing because they focused more on investing in DEI aligned firms than ones that could actually turn a profit.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that much of the “culture war” battles (save abortion and gun control, maybe) are steeped in Marxist ideology and jargon, but maybe that’s just me.
There is little doubt in my mind as to which side started this particular phase of the culture wars. Like all irrational feuds, this one goes back way before the democratic socialists started imposing their agenda on Americans. Before that, “conservatives” had managed to design big city police departments around protecting white communities from black encroachment; to outlaw women from voting; and to outlaw miscegenation and sodomy. In reaction, the left legislated equal rights under the law. Then, as is usually the case in such movements, they overplayed their hands and pushed their agenda too far, creating NEW “rights” and trying to force the rest of us to pay for them with a massive new bureaucracy and wealth transfers. When the right had finally had enough they started pushing back, and that’s where we are now.
Well said. Reason dismisses the very real concerns of parents as “culture wars”. Meanwhile public schools are indoctrinating children from 5 years old into racist ideology. Children are getting hormone treatments, puberty blockers, mastectomies and “gender affirming” surgery without their parents knowledge or consent. And make no mistake. It is the state that is perpetrating these crimes in the persons of public school teachers, administrators, librarians and elected officials acting in their official capacity. Reason consistently defends the state in these circumstances. When parents push back they are belittled by the New Koch libertarians as “culture warriors”. Yeah there is a culture war going on but Mammas for DeSantis didn’t start it.
This is the best post in the entire thread.
I have never been able to understand the whole “advertising” mystique in the first place. It’s never been clear to me how commercial ventures or political campaign managers know that advertising achieves anything useful for their sales or the vote count. I know that the conventional wisdom is that the candidate who spends the most money on the campaign tends to win, but evidence for cause and effect seems to have escaped notice. If you take changes in opinion polls over time and try to correlate them with your advertising campaigns it seems to me that you are supporting anecdotal evidence with pseudoscientific claptrap. Oh well … I guess it’s none of my business.
Again. KGB really is as stupid on the court as she was in the hearings.

Justice Jackson’s Incredible Statistic
Her dissent from the ruling on affirmative action makes an obviously implausible claim.
You didn’t get the memo? Mathematics – especially statistics – is raciss and patriarchy-ish!
