This Pink Door Wasn't Historical Enough for Edinburgh

The City of Edinburgh Council ordered a woman to repaint her door or face fines up to 20,000 pounds.

When Miranda Dickson inherited her childhood home in the New Town section of Edinburgh, Scotland, she also inherited the curse of historical significance. After painting her front door pink in December 2021, Dickson was ordered by the City of Edinburgh Council to repaint her door a "dark and muted" color, in keeping with the character of the neighborhood, or face fines up to 20,000 pounds ($25,000). In April, after failing to overturn the order, Dickson waved the white flag with a government-approved green front door.

The lawsuit explains that Wisner designed her course to promote her political views. On her syllabus under “course requirements,” she required students to purchase “The Rebellion Community membership.” As the syllabus explained, “The Rebellion Community . . . is a global social learning community with a private space dedicated to this course.” Once students paid the $99 subscription fee online, they saw a statement that said:

Not just HOA, the absolute worse are historical districts in the North East. I lived in Connecticut and a coworker built a house in an historical district and not only the house plans had to be approved but also siding, paint colors, windows. It even went to interior areas including having a wood stove in the kitchen.
