Osceola County, Florida, sheriff's Deputy David Crawford has been charged with misdemeanor culpable negligence with personal injury after firing his Taser at a man covered in gasoline, causing the man to explode in flames. Jean Barreto was wanted for traffic violations for reportedly popping wheelies on a dirt bike in traffic. Baretto was pumping gas at a service station when Crawford tackled him. Barreto spilled gas over himself, and when Crawford fired his Taser it ignited the gasoline, leaving Barreto with second- and third-degree burns over at least 75 percent of his body.

But they should still serve warning to the particular case and the particular case should serve as example of the warning’s stupidity. Your average personal static discharge is on the order of 0.04-4 mJ, once. Your average stun gun is 10-100+ mJ, pulsed at ~20 Hz. At around 1000 rpms, when your car is being started, because compression and fuel/air mix are still coming together, your spark plugs in your car delivers about 80 mJ of energy and then drops off to about 15 at the (a normal) engine’s 100-250 psi operating pressure.

You aren’t going to set yourself or anything else on fire without some hard work generating the worst static discharge anyone’s ever seen, repeatedly, while being doused in fuel.

I only bring this up because several states mandate, by law, that you discharge before pumping, remain present at the pump, and refrain from using your phone (even if nobody actually enforces the law).

How in the actual fuck is setting a man on fire a misdemeanor? Based on other cases, I'm pretty sure basic TASER training mentions that you probably shouldn't light up highly flammable targets.
