Brickbat: Setbacks at Sea

The U.S. Navy had the National Park Service remove two privately owned webcams from Cabrillo National Monument after those cameras captured two Navy ships almost colliding in San Diego Bay. In a statement, Navy officials cited security reasons, saying the 24-hour video feed from the cameras revealed "aircraft hangars and flight lines [at Naval Air Station North Island], Naval Base Point Loma submarine assets, and the tracking of military personnel working aboard Naval Base Coronado." But Barry Bahrami, who owns the cameras, said they had been in place for almost 10 years, and the Navy never raised any security concerns until viewers saw the near collision between the ships.

There are literally hundreds of houses on Point Loma with almost exactly the same view. If China wants to watch comings and goings from North Island they’d have no problem buying or renting a house and putting up far better cameras than one crappy webcam out by the old lighthouse.

I watched that whole clip waiting for the footage of the "almost colliding" ships. I guess if you squint hard enough? Ships are closer together at sea during refueling.

Refueling ships aren't going in opposite directions. They are running side by side and matching speeds. It's still tricky to keep the wind and waves from either pulling the ships apart and pulling out the hoses, or pushing the ships together so they bash into each other and do "minor damage" that may cost millions because everything on a navy ship is so expensive. A collision while refueling can cost a few lives if unwary seamen get caught in it, but isn't going to sink either ship.

These ships were headed nearly directly towards each other; if they had collided, one could have cut the other in half. The Arleigh Burke class destroyer demonstrated great agility once the two ships had agreed which way to break. It doesn't look like there was ever much danger of a collision, unless one ship turned to port and the other to starboard. That can only happen is if there's no communication between the ships and one ship fails to follow the rules of navigation, but IIRC, it _did_ happen once with a ferry and a freighter, and hundreds died.

So how did the two ships get so close before the ships started talking?

By the way, the usual navigational rule would require the ships to both turn to starboard (right). https://future-seafarer.com/rule-14/

But they were somewhat to port, although probably not far enough to safely pass. The first ship to turn starboard would be cutting across the course of the other. If they hadn't had the capacity to talk to each other, I think that would still have been required, but if they were as close as it looks, this would have required both to make a quite sharp turn, taking them further from their course. That would at least be inconvenient. That sharp a turn might be challenging for the oncoming LSD (landing ship dock), which is pretty much a large freighter with special provisions for helicopters and landing craft. So they talked and agreed to turn to port (left) instead. Or maybe they decided only the destroyer needed to turn - I don't see the larger and clumsier ship altering course.

I hope they had time to warn the crew about the maneuver before starting that abrupt turn...
