A former Chesapeake, Virginia, police officer was given a suspended sentence and ordered to stay on good behavior for a year after pleading guilty to forging a signature on a court summons. Skysha Nettles gave the summons to a man accused of shoplifting from a grocery store but forgot to get him to sign it. Her supervisor spotted the issue and told her she'd have to get the man to sign it or get a magistrate to issue a summons. She came back the next day with the man's signature. But the supervisor found it suspicious. Police located the man, who confirmed he didn't sign it. Nettles admitted forging the signature.

Maybe if the guy was just arrested and taken to jail that wouldn't have been a problem. Or is that too much 1980's?

You would think she would have received a commendation for finding a way to make the process more efficient. No need to go to the trouble of delivering the summons!
The thin blue line had girly loops and i's dotted with hearts.
It elicited a stinging rebuke of Nettles.

Massachusetts used to have a rule requiring drivers to sign their traffic tickets. In practice judges didn't care if the ticket was signed and I believe the law was repealed a couple years ago.
Requiring a signature just leads to unnecessary escalation with a certain type of personality. Now that we've got video of most encounters there is sufficient evidence that the driver received the ticket.
Ordered to stay on good behavior for a year? Jeebus that's harsh. Hope her friends put out the yellow ribbons when she regains her freedom.
IDK, it’s a forged signature on a shoplifting ticket. I’d say if the conviction prevents her from being rehired somewhere else as a police officer or even a security guard (which hasn’t been mentioned or discussed), justice was more than served. It would seem that no one disputes the veracity of the ticket and the guy will get off scott free for her transgression essentially identical to how he would get off scott free if he’d shoplifted *only* a couple-hundred dollars worth of merchandise in CA.
I can understand the impetus to kneel on her neck until she stops breathing for effectively trying to pass a bad check but it’s pretty clear that’s not good for justice… or business… or anybody.
Edit: Could be worse, she could've been found guilty by a 12-0 jury and sentenced to death by an 8-4 decision.
You are assuming she was fired, but I don't see anything saying that. So I assume she's still on the police force, and will still be called upon to testify in court - with the cops and prosecutor trying to conceal the record of this conviction from defense counsel.
Expectations of obtaining genuine signatures is white-centric patriarchy. Why are they so racist and why do they hate wimmin?
is this one of those deep fakes I keep hearing about?
Man, really scraping the 'local' of those local stories, no?
