Be Skeptical of the New Artificial Sweetener Scare
Plus: Liberal teens are more depressed than conservative ones, the outsize role of immigrants in U.S. innovation, and more...

Does the artificial sweetener erythritol cause heart attacks and strokes? That's the tenor of a spate of reporting on a new study published this week in the journal Nature Medicine. But there are numerous reasons to be cautious about drawing conclusions from the study's purported findings.
The researchers report that "in patients undergoing cardiac risk assessment…circulating levels of multiple polyol sweeteners, especially erythritol, were associated with incident (3 year) risk for major adverse cardiovascular events," including heart attack, stroke, and death. Erythritol—"one of the most widely used artificial sweeteners with rapidly increasing prevalence in processed and 'keto'-related foods"—was "among the very top" molecules associated with these tragic outcomes.
"Subsequent analyses of stable patients undergoing elective cardiac evaluation confirmed this association," with patients with the highest levels of circulating erythritol in their blood more likely to have cardiovascular disease and more likely to experience major adverse cardiovascular events. "Compared to participants in the lowest quartile of erythritol levels, those in the highest quartile had a substantially increased incident event risk in both" U.S. and European cohorts, the study states.
"The degree of risk was not modest," lead study author Stanley Hazen, director of the Center for Cardiovascular Diagnostics and Prevention at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute, told CNN—one of many major media outlets to report (uncritically) on the study's findings. CNN summed it up like this: "People with existing risk factors for heart disease, such as diabetes, were twice as likely to experience a heart attack or stroke if they had the highest levels of erythritol in their blood."
That sounds bad, right? But let's dig a little deeper.
The first issue to jump out here is that all of the people studied already had metabolic issues of some sort. So it's at least unclear that these results would generalize to populations without these issues.
Another red flag (raised by a neurobiology Ph.D. student on Twitter) is that the people in the highest quartile of erythritol levels look quite different than the people in the lowest quartile. In the first part of the study, for instance, those in the lowest quartile had an average age of 59.8, while those in the highest quartile had an average age of 70.2. The highest quartile had about a point heavier BMI, was less likely to be male, and was significantly more likely to have diabetes (36.7 percent versus 14.8 percent in the lowest quartile). They were more likely to have a history of heart attack and heart failure, and had significantly higher blood triglyceride levels, among other things. And similar differences can be seen in the U.S. and European study cohorts.
The researchers say they adjusted for these factors. But it's difficult to adjust for such a wide range of differences and all the complex metabolic processes that they entail.
Perhaps the biggest issue in the study—noted by University of Oxford researcher Nicola Guess—is that human bodies produce some erythritol naturally, and yet the researchers didn't control for endogenous versus exogenous erythritol.
Like cholesterol, the amount of erythritol in the body doesn't directly correspond to erythritol consumed. Exogenous erythritol—which comes from our diet—is what all the reports on this study are concerned with. (For instance: "Study Suggests Possible Link Between Sugar Substitute and Heart Issues," reported The New York Times in a typical headline about the study.) Endogenous erythritol is a molecule produced internally.
But the researchers in this study did not tease out how much circulating blood erythritol came from each source, leaving open the possibility that a) it's not only or even mostly consumption of erythritol as a sugar substitute that led to high erythritol levels in the cohort with the worst outcomes and b) it's not only or even mostly consumption of erythritol as a sugar substitute that is linked to higher instances of heart attack, stroke, and death.
It still could be—but we certainly can't tell that from this study. And there's good reason to suspect that naturally produced erythritol here is the more likely suspect.
"Erythritol is produced in the body via the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP), a process which might be upregulated by oxidative stress," explained Guess. That is, oxidative stress—itself a major cause of health issues including cardiovascular problems—can lead to increased production of endogenous erythritol.
"In fact, [as far as I know], serum erythritol is somewhat recognised as an early, general marker of cardiometabolic dysfunction," Guess continued.
This recognition that blood erythritol levels can cause problems predates the new study. "Serum erythritol is a predictive biomarker of chronic disease development and complications," according to a 2021 paper published in the journal Current Developments in Nutrition.
A 2020 study published in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care states that "elevated serum erythritol predicts future central adiposity gain and type 2 diabetes mellitus in healthy adults." It points out that "erythritol is a newly recognized human metabolic product of glucose, synthesized through the pentose phosphate pathway."
This pathway is stimulated by a range of things that can also lead to major adverse cardiac events, making the idea that dietary erythritol is the main cause of elevated serum erythritol and adverse outcomes suspect.
As it stands, despite the nature medicine label, they really didn't do the basic legwork to illustrate their findings had anything to do with dietary erythritol. They didn't do any sort of dietary evaluation. They compared quartiles instead of doing regression, which is…

Is teen mental health tied to politics? Matthew Yglesias explored research suggesting that liberal teens are more depressed than their conservative counterparts:
But I want to talk about…a 2021 paper by Catherine Gimbrone, Lisa Bates, Seth Prins, and Katherine Keyes titled "The politics of depression: Diverging trends in internalizing symptoms among US adolescents by political beliefs." The CDC survey doesn't ask teens about their political beliefs, but Gimbrone et. al. find not only divergence by gender, but divergence by political ideology. Breaking things down by gender and ideology, they find that liberal girls have the highest increase in depressive affect and conservative boys have the least. But liberal boys are more depressed than conservative girls, suggesting an important independent role for political ideology.
I think the discussion around gender and the role of social media is an important one. But I also don't believe that liberal boys are experiencing more depression than conservative girls because they are disproportionately hung up on Instagram-induced body image issues — I think there's also something specific to politics going on.
Some of it might be selection effect, with progressive politics becoming a more congenial home for people who are miserable. But I think some of it is poor behavior by adult progressives, many of whom now valorize depressive affect as a sign of political commitment. The thing about depression, though, is that it's bad. Separate from the Smith/Levitz project of arguing about recent political trends, I think we need some kind of society-level cognitive behavioral therapy to convince people that whatever it is they are worried about, depression is not the answer. Because it never is.

The outsize role of immigrants in U.S. innovation. A new paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) finds "immigrant inventors are key contributors to innovation in the United States, both through their direct productivity and through the spillover effects of their work with native-born collaborators," as an NBER summary puts it:
While accounting for just 16 percent of all US-based inventors, immigrant inventors produce nearly a quarter of total innovation output as gauged by the number of patents and patent citations and the economic value of the patents.
Looking at data on immigrant inventors between 1990 and 2016 (with immigrants defined as people who got a Social Security number at age 20 or later), they found that "immigrants produced 23 percent of all patents over the study period." In addition, immigrants "collaborated with native-born inventors on 13 percent of all patent filings, so they were either directly or indirectly responsible for 36 percent of US patent output during the study period."

“Liberal teens are more depressed than conservative ones”
So, the plan is working!
Also, First! Two days in a row!
Youre going to end up on Fists list.
Like Sarc's list, but funner.
I assume people on the fist list get fisted.
Excerpted from the excerpt:
I think the discussion around gender and the role of social media is an important one. But I also don’t believe that liberal boys are experiencing more depression than conservative girls because they are disproportionately hung up on Instagram-induced body image issues — I think there’s also something specific to politics going on. Some of it might be selection effect, with progressive politics becoming a more congenial home for people who are miserable. But I think some of it is poor behavior by adult progressives, many of whom now valorize depressive affect as a sign of political commitment.
First off, I’ll give props–seriously–to Yglesias for even broaching this subject in the first place. It’s one that a lot of political pundits have been avoiding like the plague, even though numbers were coming out YEARS ago that the diagnosed mental illness rates of Zoomers, especially white people who identify as left-wing, were way off the charts.
It’s been noted by conservative pundits that 25% or more of left-wing Zoomers have been diagnosed by medical professional with some kind of mental health problem–with a correlation of those who also happen to identify as an Alphabet person. In 2020, Pew found that diagnosed mental illness rates for whites who identified as “very liberal” to be 38 PERCENT.
There’s a lot to go into with something like this, but it’s important to note here that leftists have ALWAYS found something to be absolutely miserable about, and tend to self-medicate that misery to extreme lengths, whether it be controlled substances or social media engagement that included havens of absolute lunacy like Tumblr. Anyone who grew up in the 70s and 80s can easily recall left-wing garment-rending over the ozone layer or nuclear holocaust; today, it’s global warming and race/gender issues. Their on-going confusion of empathy with sympathy merely exacerbates these problems.
Honestly, it seems that the most elegant way to avoid this kind deep, free-floating anxiety is to recognize that leftism, going back to its political roots in the French Revolution, is a gnostic cult, and that simply not being a leftist gives you a far better chance to avoid such pathological misery. Secondly, it’s important to reject any effort by white leftists to browbeat you into being as self-loathing and miserable as they are; if you have kids, you also need to sack the fuck up and not be afraid to proactively approach them about this stuff. They need to realize that just because some shitlib at school or kid raised by shitlibs are upset about something, it doesn’t mean they need to get in a lather about it, too–and if anyone is telling them otherwise, especially a groomer teacher, they need to know that they are safe to inform you about it, so you can take care of the problem. That way, you reduce the chances of a situation like that poor nine-year-old in Long Island who ended up wanting to kill herself because her teacher was forcing her to use male pronouns (incidentally that teacher, Debra Rosenquist, is a fucking grandma-aged woman with rainbow hair like she’s still going to da club).

I don't know anything about this new sweetener, but that Halo Top 'ice cream' pictured is absolute flavorless crap.
Does the artificial sweetener erythritol cause heart attacks and strokes?
Probably not, but the price on that Halo Top sure will. Thanks for the heads-up on the taste. I'll stick with the store brand and my churn for the Summer.
First you get the sugar. Then you get the money. Then you get the women.

Nope. That's cold showers and climate change. Also getting up suddenly.
I recall a time during the ’80s when excess hair on your earlobes was a sure sign you were likely to have a cardiac arrest. The media, being the media, of course ran with it.
Damn the happenstance and competing variables! And bullshit studies.
Nah. It's just that both cardiac arrest and ear hair are symptoms of age. A micro-sized electric shaver solves at least one problem. The soothing vibration on other parts of the body can help solve the other.
Definitely isn't the mass pharmaceutical experiment. Nope. Couldn't be. Totes free and fair.

Does the artificial sweetener erythritol cause heart attacks and strokes?
It might be wiser to just use a pinch of sugar or a little bit of honey for a sweetener rather than all of the artificial ones, HFCS included.

And who is keeping track of the Matthew Yglesias counter? It needs to be reset to zero.
He is apparently a science denier.
It might be wiser to just use a pinch of sugar or a little bit of honey for a sweetener rather than all of the artificial ones
Not true. No sweetener at all is best, but if you're going to add sweetener to things, sugar is the least healthy one of all.
And to R Mac's point, two of them - erythritol and stevia - are not artificial.
I don't care if they are artificial or not. I don't like them because they taste bad. I've never tried a non-sugar sweetener that doesn't just taste weird and unpleasant to me.
instant stomachache too. all of them.
When you say “weird and unpleasant”, do you mean “unicorn frappicino with natural sweetener” weird and unpleasant or “ketchup on a hot dog with natural sweetener” weird and unpleasant?
I could understand if you’re not fat, a sweets lover, or it gives you tummy rumbles or whatever and I freely admit they don’t generally taste exactly like sugar, but it just seems weird that someone who would wade through bar full of shitty IPAs to find the good one would turn their nose up at every last sugar substitute.
Some of the sweeteners have a strange aftertaste to me. Neotame (Nutra Sweet), aspartame, saccharine, etc., taste fine at first, but shortly afterward, there's a strange aftertaste to them, especially after finishing a sip of pop.
I certainly agree specifically with the ones named, what I’d admittedly kinda whimsically call “first generation” artificial sweeteners. They frequently have a chemical or metallic aftertaste.
But some of what I’d call “second generation” aren’t too bad in that I can “taste” (cognition being what it is) a difference between granulated sugar, powdered sugar, spun sugar/cotton candy, and certainly brown sugar. Sucralose, erythritol, allulose, Stevia, acesulfam-K, etc. fall kinda generally in that spectrum.
Which is kinda what I was getting at. If you don’t like sweets to begin with, have an “all-natural” bias, or sensitive digestive system, I could understand dismissing all of them but, otherwise, I can’t understand how you’ve never had an IPA* that tasted disgustingly like the can it came in but can’t find a sugar substitute that is palatable.
*Edit: I guess maybe more clearly it doesn't have to be a beer or an IPA. I can understand how someone would say "I won't drink saccharine in a margarita/whiskey sour/sex on the beach/pina coladas/screwdrivers/mimosas/etc.", but I can't understand how someone would say "I won't drink any artificial sweetener in a margarita/whiskey sour/sex on the beach/pina coladas/scredrivers/mimosas/etc." unless they just don't like alcohol or mixed drinks.
crunchy peanut butter goes on hotdogs
Stevia is the worst. They've brought back the sickening taste of saccharin.
Disagree. Stevia while it still has an aftertaste, isn't as sharp as saccharine.
In descending order of preference:
1. Good coffee - Sure, black, no sugar.
2. OK coffee - If you've got stevia/splenda/allulose/erythritol, sure, black.
3. Bad coffee - No thanks.
The American Civil Liberties Union is launching a new initiative dedicated "to help[ing] those facing prosecution for providing, supporting, or seeking abortion care."

Ironic to see that reported uncritically on the same piece that carefully distinguished causation from correlation in artificial sweeteners.
They did the same thing a couple years ago with “Immigrant Companies” where, if they counted a board with one (legal!) immigrant and 50 natives as “Immigrant” and hung all the same "network of profitability” accouterments off of that (and ignored all other market factors!), “Immigrant Companies” (which may’ve only had the one immigrant!) were more productive than “Native Companies” (which may’ve been primarily staffed by immigrants!).

The German chemicals giant cites increased energy prices as one reason for this, but it omits some crucial other factors – namely, that Europe’s excessive bureaucracy and sky-high taxes means that it is no longer a globally competitive market.

Much, much, much greater genetic similarity between a white man and black man than there is between a white man and white woman
How dare you! The only difference between men and women is the desire to use different bathrooms, or locker rooms, for sports teams.
Much, much, much greater genetic similarity between a white man and black man than there is between a white man and white woman
Nah. The main genetic differences between a white woman and a white man are fixated on a single chromosome.
The differences between a black man and a white man result from variances over numerous chromosomes --including variants of gene sequences both possess.
The statement you parroted was created by morons trying to say that race is a social construct. They're still doing this. They've included sex as well now.
And they're wrong.
Then let's go biological similarity, as I'm not a genetics expert.
I am interested to know more about Neanderthal, Denisovan, and X contributions based on the revealed geographic distinction.
Well, depends on how you measure. The differences between races are in more different places, but they are also much less significant than those between males and females.
And race is largely a social construct. Of course there are real differences like skin color and other characteristics. But, for example, there is more genetic difference among different populations of black people in Africa than there is between pretty much any two populations outside of Africa. It is not a particularly scientifically useful way to divide up humanity.
The main genetic differences between a white woman and a white man are fixated on a single chromosome.
This is epistemological nonsense generally and specifically far-reaching anti-biological nonsense along several dimensions on par with the transgender idiocy. There is a case to be made for what you're trying to saying, but you aren't making it because it actually weakens the path to the conclusion you're determined to reach.
As plain and simple as it can be made: there is no genotype for "black", black is a phenotype.
Across all races there *may* be greater diversity than there is within the two sexes of any given race, but that's not what you've said or what you're implying and what you're actually saying or implying is trying to overrule history, empiricism, and the scientific method every bit as much as the transgender idiocy.
As plain and simple as it can be made: there is no genotype for “black”, black is a phenotype.
Even the above vastly understates the breadth and depth of biology and history you’re trying to plow through with your own whimsical social constructs:
*Across all mammals* (and a majority of vertebrates and invertebrates) there is no genotype for “black”, virtually all black mammals are phenotypically black. *Across all mammals* (vertebrates to a slightly lesser degree, invertebrates to a significantly lesser degree), ~50% of them are genotypically female.
Race is a social construct and obviously so. There is no “Asian” genotype, the notion of genes having an intrinsic conception of and association with geography mind-numbingly retarded.
There is more genetic difference between a man and a woman than there is between a woman and a female chimpanzee.
I feel old. I can't believe this is no longer common knowledge.

NEW: The NIH is spending nearly a quarter of a billion dollars to promote the use of diversity statements in faculty hiring.
Through public records requests, I’ve acquired the DEI statement rubrics used for two NIH-funded faculty hiring programs.
In 2020, the NIH created a program designed to give 12 institutions $241 million for DEI-focused faculty hiring.
To be hired through the program, candidates must submit a diversity statement and demonstrate “a strong commitment to promoting diversity and inclusive excellence.”
Through records requests, I have acquired the rubrics for evaluating diversity statements used by the NIH-funded programs at the University of South Carolina and the University of New Mexico.
The rubrics are nearly identical. Here’s the beginning of South Carolina’s.
The rubrics punish candidates who espouse race neutrality.
They dictate a low score for anyone who states an “intention to ignore the varying backgrounds of their students and ‘treat everyone the same.’”
Applicants can’t merely focus on viewpoint diversity. This too runs afoul of the rubrics.
They mandate a low score for any candidate who defines diversity “only in terms of different areas of study or different nationalities but doesn’t mention gender or ethnicity/race.”
The NIH’s push is having an effect even on institutions that haven’t won this grant money.
The UMASS Chan Medical School is engaged in DEI-focused hiring initiatives, explicitly following the NIH’s example. I have also acquired its rubric. Note the similarities.
At best, these federally-funded diversity statement requirements prompt institutions to prioritize trivialities when hiring scholars and scientists. At worst, they threaten academic freedom.
That, after all, is why the @nasorg, @TheFIREorg, and @AFA_Alliance have called for an end to the practice of required diversity statements.
But as long as they carry the imprimatur of the federal government, many institutions will continue to embrace them.

Hey, why even bother having a state religion if the state cannot mandate proper worship among the people?
It's much like the Red Scare of 1919 and McCarthyism of the 50s. Mandating bien pensant and punishing wrong think.
Rather than being annoyed, I've begun to enjoy the show, and watching them inevitably unravel and consume themselves.
"and watching them inevitably unravel"
Not with the blessings of the ruling class. Sure they'll eat themselves but that's part of the point, the feature, not a bug. And it can be sustained indefinitely with indoctrination of the youth.
Viva la revolucion!
"And it can be sustained indefinitely with indoctrination of the youth."
This is seriously the worst part. Each generation of kids become more subservient to and dependent upon the State. There isn't anything going on anywhere that the State shouldn't get involved in.
It's much more like the Cultural Revolution given the full power of Nuremberg Laws
What happens if a teachers union takes over municipal government?
https://www.illinoispolicy.org/chicago-teachers-union-affiliates-spend-nearly-2-5m-to-put-johnson-in-mayoral-run-off/
The Chicago Teachers Union is on its way to “take over running the city government,” as current Mayor Lori Lightfoot predicted in 2021.
Brandon Johnson, CTU’s chosen candidate for mayor, surged in recent days to take second place in Chicago’s Feb. 28 election, with 20% of the vote. A run-off between Johnson and frontrunner Paul Vallas, who received 34% of the vote, will take place April 4.
The vast majority of Johnson’s campaign war chest came from unions, and particularly CTU and its affiliates, the American Federation of Teachers and the Illinois Federation of Teachers.
There is no hope for that place; but perhaps it will serve as a cautionary tale for...no, that won't happen either. Just have to govern harder, woke harder, socialism harder...Lori Lightfoot to the third power at least.
Build the wall!
I'm retiring so will happily volunteer my services to lay bricks for free.
What happens if a teachers union takes over municipal government?
Wait, isn't that basically how it works everywhere? I'm from California so I've never seen or heard of anything different.
A new report looks at "how the war on sex work is stripping your privacy rights."
Pretty sure the War on Self-Medicators has already picked that carcass clean.
"Among the spending was money for controversial yet widely used technology to gain access to locked cell phones and computers."
Yes, the war on hookers is what's doing in our privacy rights. It will never be lucrative enough to compete with the drug war.
The war of gender fluidentity is making a mockery of women's rights. I wonder if ENB and Scott have thought through their coming conflict over who gets to be KMW's lap dog.
Not to mention the War on Terror.
Canadian panel pushes assisted suicide for minors without parental consent
https://www.foxnews.com/media/canadian-panel-pushes-assisted-suicide-minors-parental-consent
Canada’s Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying recommending allowing euthanasia for some minors
A 138-page Canadian Parliament document was shared online called, "Medical Assistance In Dying In Canada: Choices or Canadians." One part of the report addressed assisted suicide options for "mature" minors in Canada. They considered two tracks, one for whom there is "reasonably foreseeable" death, the second track for those for whom "mental disorder is the sole underlying medical condition."
The government document explained the debate among government witnesses about expanding assisted suicide to those who are not yet legal adults.
"For MAID and mature minors, the committee heard a mix of views about whether MAID should be available to those under the age of 18. Many witnesses believed that age alone does not determine whether someone is capable of consenting to MAID," the document’s authors wrote. "At the same time, a cautious approach was recommended, especially since there is little evidence from youth themselves on this topic."...
Involuntary assisted suicide for government beauracrats and enablers of MAID for minors should be the end result there.
But whatever you do, don't let those under 18 year olds walk around outside by themselves! God only knows what maybe possibly could happen to them!
Yep. They might get hit by a car, jump off a bridge, or die from something else before they can do MAID. Heaven forbid that bureaucrats weren't involved.
Possibly a solution for all those depressed Liberal teens. Just a quick trip to Toronto and all your problems are over. Maybe the doomsayers could send their kids there for a quick and painless death, rather than the slow, painful demise ensured by Climate Change. Think of the children!
Love them to death!
This is so fucked. Isn't one of the main goals of mental health treatment supposed to be to stop people from committing suicide?
This isn't a 'mental health' consideration it's the state looking at the balance of how much those youth with mental issues will contribute to the economy versus how much they'll siphon out of it for the duration of their lifetime.
Actuarial Murder might be a more appropriate name for the practice.

They got their start as a Canadian company, and Canada's official name used to be The Dominion of Canada.
It came from Psalm 72:8, referring to God’s dominion: “He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.”
At confederation we were described in the UK parliamentary bill as a Dominion of Four Provinces.
The name became simply "Canada" with the new constitution in 1982, and our national holiday switched names from Dominion Day to Canada day, but we still have "dominion" in everything up here.
From the Toronto Dominion bank (one of our largest) to Dominion Ice Skates.

HBO was doing battlespace prep in case the GOP won, so that's OK.
Perhaps those issues and opinions were not yet on the prohibited, er, misinformation list in 2006.
Because there's a difference between publishing a single documentary versus knowingly and repeatedly peddling false accusations for monetary gain?
Show us how they're false.
It is more than one documentary. And defamation doesn’t require multiple statements.
But please continue.
Bonus. Continue to ignore the Dominion emails found during discovery and submitted by Fox News where they admit counts can be incorrect.
"repeatedly peddling false accusations"
They're not false, Shrike.
Wait, HBO doesn't make any money off their 'documentaries', and they only show it once?
That was kind of my thought as well, but Shrike will be Shrike.
I just find it funny the went back to there is no fraud from no widespread fraud.

Last month, Boulder County spent the first of what it hopes will be millions of dollars for the treatment and prevention of drug addiction...

Haha. The war on drugs is a sure thing for mandatory rehab, don't you know!
Hospitals like to catch new mothers testing positive for THC, so they can be threatened with losing custody of their newborn if they do not take the cure.
Hand in hand it goes.
I noticed the emphasis on "the first of what it hopes will be millions of dollars" rather than any desired outcome. Usually the burrocrats are a little more circumspect.
Yet another deep blue money pit for bureaucrats and political activists that won't actually curb drug addiction, but will line their own pockets and ensure their continued political influence with the retards in the Colorado statehouse.

Let’s normalize renting – Canada’s obsession with homeownership hurts the economy
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/commentary/article-renting-homeownership-canadian-economy/
Yep, all those fascists striving to buy their own houses, along with cars and other stuff, is the core problem with the world.
How about no. Renting costs more in the short and long terms than owning. You still pay mortgage and tax costs, but this time with a cut for the owner.
Renting is a whole lot cheaper in the short term. Buying a house has heavy upfront expenditures. If you move every year, ownership is a disaster. I don't know where the breakeven point is, but I'd be surprised if it's under five years.
True, renting is good for those who may move every year or two to a different city/metro area. However, if you're going to stay in a city or metro area for an extended period of time (10, 15+ years), owning makes way more sense.
To be fair, you dont really own your home. Prop tax and regulation make it so that basically you're just a tenant of the gov.
In Denver, rent has doubled over the last 8 years and every shitlib in a 40 mile-radius of the city is wringing their hands over how to fix it, usually with stupid, multi-time failure civic snake oil schemes like rent control.
Simply put, if these fuckers had either opened up the housing development gates, or not encouraged so many drug addicts and tech goons to move to the state in the first place, they wouldn't be having this problem to this degree.

Thought I’d read that he was a vocal critic of woke and trans nonsense before starting this ruse, but there seems to be a dearth of people who know what he’s about, so who knows?
But yeah, I’d bet he’s trolling. The fact that it’s gone on this long speaks to the paralysis of people to confront freaks. Sad. Funny too.
One of the earlier articles about it said that he had been accused of "toxic masculinity" at the school.
It would be the absolute greatest troll of ALL TIME if it were true.
What's sad is that the absurdity of the trans cult has gone so far that you really can't tell if he's for real or just trolling.

Why You Should Stop Eating Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Dogmatic adherence to mealtimes is anti-science, racist, and might actually be making you sick.

Add one more item to "white supremacy:" Breakfast, lunch, or dinner [do you get to choose, or is "dogmatic adherence to mealtimes" any and all of them?].
I've begun to enjoy this, watching these assholes turn themselves into outrageous jokes.

If only she’d watched those “Schoolhouse Rock” shorts, explaining the separation of powers: Congress passes laws and holds Uncle Sam’s “purse strings.” If student loans are wiped out, that counts as a hit on the US Treasury, even if funds covering those balances (as much as $1 trillion) get rolled into the national debt, as they would.
No one ever accused Randi Weingarten of being smart or well-informed.
What about AOC? She told me the MMT (magic money tree) would cover it.
I asked on Volokh and got some answers. Uncle Sugar started loaning to students directly instead of merely guaranteeing bank loans in 2012. Thus Biden is not literally spending money which Congress has not appropriated; he is merely canceling future revenue.
But no one answered if Biden’s student loan cancellation EO was restricted to post-2012 student loans.
ETA I wonder if the 2012 change from guarantor to lender had this cancellation in mind at the time.
Interesting. I remember them be the guarantor when I took out a small student loan in the 1990s, but I paid that all back in the time allotted rather easily. Didn't realize they were actually a lender now.
Loans were generally privately held but federally backed if defaulted.
It was something tucked into the ACA back in 2012
ETA I wonder if the 2012 change from guarantor to lender had this cancellation in mind at the time.
I highly doubt they were looking that far ahead. If that was the case, Obizzle would have brought it up at the time; the policy change simply aligned with his belief that everything should be centralized within the federal government.
And the assertion that the status change from guarantor to lender makes the administration qualified to cancel that debt doesn't hold water, either, because the money for those loans still has to be appropriated by Congress as part of the executive branch budeget request. Thus, Congress is still the originator of the loan, the executive is merely enforcing the delivery mechanism.
No, there is a difference. The money to pay off guaranteed loans is new expenditures and has to be appropriated by Congress. Forgoing future revenue is just lost income and has nothing to do with appropriations.
Yeah, they're using the PPP loan argument here, but it still doesn't apply. PPP was supposed to be a one-time emergency measure for a nationwide economic disaster. Federal student loans have been going on for decades, and are not an emergency measure, but one that supposedly provides their recipients with an increased income over people who don't have degrees.
If the executive branch can wipe out student loans, then the call is going to be for it to wipe out any federal-originated loans entirely on a mere whim of the executive.
“Breaking things down by gender and ideology, they find that liberal girls have the highest increase in depressive affect and conservative boys have the least. But liberal boys are more depressed than conservative girls, suggesting an important independent role for political ideology.”
As always, play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
More seriously, who could have predicted the outcome of a religious-political movement dedicated to victimhood, safetyism, and perpetual existential crises?
Less seriously, how far along are we for the divergence of Eloi and Morlocks?
Not just that but one that removes all rules and boundaries only to install new, more zealously enforced doctrine that changes by the day or subject.

Psychologists say a good life doesn’t have to be happy, or even meaningful
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/psychologists-good-life-doesn-t-170539369.html
...Crucially, an experience doesn’t have to be fun in order to qualify as psychologically enriching. It might even be a hardship. Living through war or a natural disaster might make it hard to feel as though you’re living a particularly happy or purposeful life, but you can still come out of the experience with psychological richness. Or you might encounter less dramatic but nonetheless painful events: infertility, chronic illness, unemployment. Regardless of the specifics, you may experience suffering but still find value in how your experience shapes your understanding of yourself and the world around you....
Remember, Marxism is primarily about struggle. Just embrace it.
You know who else had a kampf?
Frederich Engels?
Does the kampf come with kraut?
Bets the fucking quack who wrote this knows absolutely nothing about real hardship, never mind "Living through war or a natural disaster."
Prime example of Rev's "betters" bringing you the realization of living in a "shining example of progress" [yeah, I'm still waiting for an actual example of those, Rev Asshole].
They're sure setting us up to accept misery as our lot. Aren't they.
The revolution of decreased expectations.
I would like to know what the word "good" means in that sentence
Who gives a shit about psychological richness (whatever that is) if you are unhappy and find no meaning in life.
I think you can have a good life that includes lots of struggle and pain. But without any sense of meaning I have a hard time seeing what would be good about it.
And eating crickets will make you feel good about saving the planet.

“It certainly is a growing faction inside the GOP,” David Kochel, a former senior campaign adviser to Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney, told me. A November 2022 Morning Consult poll showed that nearly half of Republicans supported “greater isolationism.” According to a February Gallup poll, 41 percent of Republicans support ending the Ukraine war quickly, even if that means ceding some territory to Russia.
50 million little Ukrainian flags on liberal lawns and social media accounts can't be wrong.

There is no vital US national interest in Ukraine.
Honestly, I wish those pushing the bullshit that the US 'must' be intimately involved in Ukraine get my first sentence tattooed on their forehead.

Was anything interesting said at the Garland hearings yesterday ENB?
Defense of FACE act while ignoring violent attacks on churches and pro life centers. Night attacks are so hard.
Mike Lee: “In the meantime, in 2022 and for the first couple of months of 2023, DOJ’s announced charges against 34 individuals for blocking access to, or vandalizing, abortion clinics, and there’ve been over 81 reported attacks on pregnancy centers. 130 attacks on Catholic churches since the leak of the Dobbs decision. And only two individuals have been charged. So how do you explain this disparity, uh, by reference to anything other than politicization of what’s happening there?”
.
Merrick Garland: “The FACE [Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances] Act applies equally to, uh, efforts to, um, uh, damage a blockade, uh, um, um, um, clinics, whether pregnant, um, uh, resource, uh, whether they are a pregnancy resource center or whether they are an abortion center. It applies equally in both cases, and we apply the law equally. Um, uh, I will say you’re quite right, there are many more prosecutions with respect, uh, to the, um, uh, blocking of the, uh, um, of the abortion centers, but that is generally because they are, those actions are taken in, uh, with photography at the time, um, and, uh, during the daylight and, uh, seeing the person who did it is quite easy. Those who are attacking the pregnancy resource centers, which is a horrid thing to do, are doing this at night, um, in the dark. We have put full resources on this, uh, we have, uh, uh, asked, uh, put, uh, um, rewards out for this. Um, the Justice Department and the FBI have made, um, outreach to Catholic and, uh, um, other organizations […]”
Defends men in women's prisons. Not a safety issue.
Lindsey Graham: “When it comes to federal prisons, are you aware that 1200 prisoners are requesting to be sent from a male prison to a female prison?”
.
Merrick Garland: “I’m not, no.”
.
Graham: “OK. Um, what is our policy when it comes to allowing a male prisoner to be transitioned into a female prison?”
.
Garland: “Uh, I think, uh, if you’re generally asking the question of how, um, trans people are dealt with in the Bureau of Prisons, my understanding, um, is that these are, uh, determinations about, um, uh, where they’re placed or where people are placed in general have to do with individualized determinations regarding the security of that individual, um, and the management of the prison, these are done on a case-by-case basis. That’s my understanding.”
Garland sounds like he was caught without a script for both of those questions.
Also struggling not to blurt out what he really believes, followed by "Fuck you, that's why!"
Can you imagine that man as a SCOTUS justice?
Senator McConnell deserves a Medal of Freedom for spiking Garland's nomination to the Court. Just that act alone should qualify McConnell as one of the better Senate Majority leaders in history.
Jfc
As much damage as Garland can do as Attorney General, he'd be far, far worse as a justice.
Seriously, thank god for McConnell and Trump. I really hate having to admit that but it's true. Those two losers did something great for this country.
I'd say do an "um", "drink", drinking game, but it would probably be fatal.

Nearly 60 House Democrats voted with Republicans in the U.S. House Wednesday to put a check President Joe Biden’s executive orders.
The House voted on the REIN IN Inflation Act, which would require the Biden administration to publish the “inflationary impact” of each executive order before issuing it. The bill passed 272-148 with 59 Democrats in support.

Earlier this year in a published paper, Dr. Anthony Fauci, who left his role as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases last year, cast doubt on the efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccines.
While many of Pritzker's vaccine mandates on people like college staff and students and K-12 staff have since been lifted, Pritzker defended the mandated shots.
Research by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University found vaccine mandates imposed by city officials in Chicago and elsewhere made virtually no difference in stopping the spread of the virus.
You might be surprised at the number of commenters here who think they work

"But I also don't believe that liberal boys are experiencing more depression than conservative girls because they are disproportionately hung up on Instagram-induced body image issues — I think there's also something specific to politics going on."
Let me guess. Liberal boys have been told over and over that males are inherently wrong, and "male thinking" is oppressive and evil. They have been raised in homes and educated in schools dominated by women, and encouraged if not required to act more feminine. How could they not be fucked up?
And it's wrong and sinful to have white skin.

Republican Sens. Mike Braun and Josh Hawley reintroduced the bill on Monday after the Department of Energy (DOE) provided a classified intelligence report to the White House and certain members of Congress, which concluded that the COVID-19 pandemic most likely arose from a lab leak. The FBI had previously come to a similar conclusion.
Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) made a request for unanimous consent of the bill, which was granted “without objection.” Unanimous consent enables a bill to pass without a recorded vote.
I recall during the Reign of the Bushpigs when the economy really did crash in 2008 that site (ZeroHead) became the go-to site for Doomers and Preppers.
Their premise was never to hedge (thus the name) and short the market to the tilt.
That premise failed spectacularly 2010-2016.

And yet they have some really good articles and links to articles, like most places if you look, and ACTUALLY READ THE ARTICLES FULLY (unlike you).

I got that at Zerohead.

"I recall during the Reign of the Bushpigs"
The same Bushpigs you've been quoting and stanning for lately? The only neocon Bushpig here is you, Pluggo.
That seems like news that could have been included in the round up.
Which is why some of us have taken to doing our own roundups.

"A new paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) finds "immigrant inventors are key contributors to innovation in the United States, both through their direct productivity and through the spillover effects of their work with native-born collaborators," as an NBER summary puts it"
So, if this is the new key metric for admission to our New Society, let's break down the rest of the population by some sort of grouping. Hair color?
No, it's setting up for the coming classification of CRT, 1619, DIE, and all that wokism as "innovative".
Bloomberg – Money supply not a factor for today’s inflation
The Fed’s conduct of monetary policy changed fundamentally in 2008, when Congress granted it the power to pay interest on the reserves that banks maintain at the central bank. The move severed the link between the amount of bank reserves, which is the key input to the money supply), and the price of credit. If, say, the Fed sets the rate on reserves at 5%, banks have no reason to lend for less, no matter how much reserves they have. …… This is why inflation didn’t surge amid the Fed’s quantitative easing programs of 2009 to 2014 and 2020 to 2021, even as bank reserves and money-supply growth peaked at more than $4 trillion and 26.9%, respectively. Most of the money just sat there: Despite a glut of deposits that reached some $18 trillion, total bank loans and leases declined from a peak of $10.9 trillion in May 2020 to $10.4 trillion a year later. And now, the fact that banks are awash in reserves and liquidity will also mitigate the effects of the Fed’s quantitative tightening. One reason they’ve been so slow to raise interest rates on customer deposits is that they don’t need to attract more money to fund their lending.
https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2023-02-28/money-supply-doesn-t-explain-us-inflation?leadSource=uverify%20wall
Where, then, did inflation come from? The economy overheated for several reasons: Shifts in the composition of demand towards goods during the early stages of the pandemic led to supply-chain snarls, fiscal stimulus added to spending power, and the Fed kept interest rates too low for too long. If rates had been considerably higher, earlier, the economy would have grown more slowly, the labor market wouldn’t be as tight and wage and price inflation would be lower.
......
So what about quantitative easing? Did it have no effect at all? Of course it played a role in making monetary policy more stimulative by pushing down bond yields and mortgage rates, but its contribution to inflation is vastly exaggerated. Most of the reserves and deposits that it created just sat on the banking system’s balance sheet and were not lent out.

You’re right. 2022 was a wicked bear market. The worst bear market since 2020 as a matter of fact.
ETA Note, the bear market of 2020 corrected in the same year.
IOW Biden, who vowed to "shut down the virus," presided over a market so bad you have to go all the way back to 2008 for a non-pandemic year with a comparably weak performance.
Pathetic. Almost as pathetic as blaming high prices on Putin. Remember the "Putin's price hike" talking point? Yeah, Dementia Joe went from Putin is totally scared of me to blaming Putin for American economic woes. Because Vlad invaded a country he didn't invade during 4 years of Trump.
Biden sucks and you embarrass yourself every time you go to bat for him.
Sandy, Sandy - I agree that Biden sucks in a normal sucky way. I've sad that Biden is "in over his head" many times here.

Inflation is caused by too much money chasing not enough stuff. If stuff is constant and quantity of money increases, you get inflation. If stuff decreases and money supply remains constant, you get inflation. People tend to blame one or the other, depending upon who they want to demonize. The left wants to demonize business while the right wants to demonize government.
In the case of 2020 you had both, as in an increase in the money supply combined with a decrease in the amount of stuff to buy. Of course saying that incurs the wrath of both sides, because you're agreeing with the other team (even while agreeing with the team that now hates you for agreeing with the other team).
Banks also weren't lending out their new reserves. Contrary to Rothbard and the hard money types, inflation is not based on reserves, but based on the money in circulation.
Inflation is an increase in money supply relative to money demand.
Ever heard of COVID stimulus checks?
The government created the oversupply of money -- record deficit spending, stimulus checks, bailouts, artificially low interest rates and quantitative easing.
The government created the supply chain problems that reduced the supply of goods -- lockdowns, vaccine mandates that some percentage of workers resisted, 14-day absences while people recovered from (potentially flawed) virus tests, and putting a small town mayor in charge of the Dept of Transportation.
I don't see any contradiction -- the government was making both sides of the problem worse.
You were banned from this site for posting links to child pornography, shit bag. Fuck off and die.
Bill Dudley, served as chair of the NY Federal Reserve Bank, has a long history of denying inflation and pushing for federal control of the money supply. Also a huge proponent of MMT which has been proven disastrously wrong.
During Covid he even called for the same programs that led to the 2008 crash you attack above.
It can buy more asset-backed securities (ABS), mortgage-backed securities (MBS), and other long-term assets. It could also engage in yield curve control or make interest rate negative – though all FOMC members have been opposed to this proposal. But even if the Fed does all this, the effect on the real economy still won’t be too much more.
Why should we be shocked he continues to double down on his past claims. When has his predictions ever been proven correct?
It feels like they just contradict what they say above but change to different synonyms to make the same thing sound different.

Does more demand for goods come from having more money supply? Fiscal stimulus isn't that adding more money supply?
This is ungood.

Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Colin Kahl claimed Moscow was capturing American weapons and selling them on the black market. “Our assessment is if some of these systems have been diverted it’s by Russians who have captured things on the battlefield, which always happens,” he said.
I love how it's not possible that Ukraine is corrupt and selling the weapons themselves, no they had to be captured first then sold by Russia. Neither option says anything good about Ukraine or justifies spending another $ on their defense, certainly not blood and lives.

https://cwbchicago.com/2023/03/man-who-allegedly-killed-a-chicago-police-officer-wednesday-was-arrested-last-summer-but-prosecutors-rejected-felony-charges.html
A Chicago police officer was killed Wednesday in a close-range exchange of gunfire with a man while investigating a domestic altercation in Gage Park, officials said. The 18-year-old man who allegedly shot the officer received a gunshot wound to his head and remains hospitalized in critical condition.
CWB Chicago has learned that the 18-year-old was arrested last summer after police said he and two other people ran from a car that had just been used in a shooting. The Cook County state’s attorney’s office rejected felony charges against him but approved charges against the other two people.
Chicago police detectives asked prosecutors to charge the 18-year-old with aggravated battery by discharging a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and criminal trespass to a vehicle, CPD records show. But the state’s attorney’s office rejected those charges, leaving the man to face a single misdemeanor count of resisting police, according to the records.

I don't think this applies to just teens. Based on my own observations it seems like the further left a person the more likely they are to be depressed. Not to mention other mental illnesses (bipolar, BPD, schizo, etc.).

IOW, the random ravings of a lunatic. Like I said, proving my point for me.
Cause or effect?
Seriously. How many people align with the left since Democrats promise emotional support for "sensitive" people?
There probably is something to the idea that the left is more attractive to mentally ill people, but I'm not sure if it's because of their (mostly false) promise of more support. I suspect it has more to do with the left's victimhood narrative wherein society is broken down into "oppressors" and "oppressed" groups. That can be an attractive ideology for anyone looking to blame their problems and failures on someone/ something other than themselves.
Don't get me wrong, mental illness sucks and it can fuck up your life. It just seems that the left attracts a lot of people who are searching for an excuse for why their life sucks that doesn't require any introspection or self accountability.
IMO they do worse than attract mentally challenged people. The unholy alliance of dependency and compassionate support, if not encouragement, leads to an emotional death spiral.
It's probably correlation not causation.
Neurotic single white women are depressed, and liberalism snares them.

https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/02/europe/greece-train-crash-larissa-protests-intl/index.html
Protesters clashed with police in the Greek capital Athens after a passenger train carrying more than 350 people collided with a freight train on Tuesday evening in Tempi, near the city of Larissa, leaving at least 46 people dead and scores injured. The death toll is expected to rise.
The Greek transport minister resigned in the wake of the tragedy, while a rail workers union is going on strike, accusing the government of “disrespect” in the sector.
From all evidence, it this was human error by an individual. Sucks to be him, but don't see why it would lead to a strike.

Blaming racism instead of diet for high blood pressure.
https://www.foxnews.com/health/black-women-ages-20-50-twice-likely-high-blood-pressure-white-women-study
"Food insecurity is important when thinking about high blood pressure since sodium levels are higher in many lower-cost food options such as canned, ultra-processed and fast foods," said Dr. Kovell.
The study did not detect a difference in blood pressure between Hispanic women and White women, despite the fact that Hispanic women experienced a greater degree of food insecurity.
Yet, both can live in food deserts, especially rural food deserts where there is no bus service to the nearest grocer.
"Diet is very much a key to better health outcomes," said Brown of South Carolina. "The African American diet has traditionally included fried foods that are highly seasoned and have high amounts of sodium, and this can contribute to hypertension."
Yet, they still try to blame racism.
Lead author Meyerovitz said that to her, the findings suggest other factors at work as well — including racism, discrimination and stress.
And this is the Fox article. The US News & World Report one claims "racism" right in the headline, as does the one from the American Heart Association.

Okay, So It Looks as if the Justice Department Probably Has Spies in Catholic Churches

In a heated exchange with Gestapo chief Merrick Garland at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) directly challenged Garland’s viciously corrupt and politicized “Justice” Department, and zeroed in on the once-respected agency’s targeting of traditionalist Roman Catholics. While Garland maintained, in the teeth of the available evidence, that the department is not actually targeting Catholics, he claimed not to know how many spies and informants the feds have in those hotbeds of terrorism, traditional Catholic parishes. In other words, he didn’t say they didn’t have any such spies and informants. So if you’re Catholic, be watchful: the guy in the pew behind you could be taking notes.
Hey, to support the new state religion, the feds have every right to prosecute any outlaw religions.

> Is teen mental health tied to politics?
My hot layman's take. Please tear this apart as needed:
Seems to me that depression is caused by either underlying conditions, or a lack of sense of self worth. I don't think it is the ideology itself that causes depression, but something correlated to ideology. Two things in fact. First, individualism versus collectivism. People will have a lower self worth if they don't think they are valued as individuals. A lot of Leftist ideologies devalue the individuals over that of the collective. Soviet Russia was notorious for depressed men self-medicating with vodka, for example.
But the other correlation is religion. Conservatives tend to be more religious than progressives. And as teen seeking to find one's place in the world, religion provides a buffer. But progressives teens don't have that, and have no guiding philosophies other than their ideology, and the current progressive ideology is increasing focused on doom (we're all going to die because of global warming, frankenfoods, etc). And the futility leads to depression.
Again, just a layman's hot take.
I agree with what you say!
I have to remark on your remark though: "Please tear this apart as needed:"
OMGA (Oh My Government Almighty), some HUMILITY on these comments pages! All too scarce!
https://www.psypost.org/2020/10/new-psychology-study-suggests-intellectual-humility-has-important-sociopolitical-consequences-58214
About humility!
Humility is a MUCH underappreciated virtue! See this: https://www.military.com/daily-news/2019/12/27/army-has-introduced-new-leadership-value-heres-why-it-matters.html Even in a supposedly “proud” profession, wise leaders treasure humility!
Well, if you're the child of a Liberal, you're likely to be bombarded by stories about how you're going to die due to climate change, or a school shooting, and how you probably should decide to surgically change gender to be politically correct, and that since you're White, it's all your fault.
No surprise they're depressed.
Just my personal observations or “layman’s take” from knowing lots of conservatives and progressives. All based on anecdote…
When a teen has emotional or other problems, liberal or progressive parents will tend to glom onto the problems and provide smothering levels of support.
Conservatives tend to tell the kid to “buck up”. Conservative kids also tend to hide or suppress their emotional problems, especially if they stem from things their church frowns upon (like being gay). And the parents don’t want to hear anything about any religious doubts or the teen’s not feeling they are getting anything positive out of the family’s enforced church life.
One more thing worth saying about this study (which I joke about below): it says right in the first few lines of the abstract that 62% of adolescents don’t identify as liberal or conservative. So, it’s kind of odd the popular takeaway is what the study has to say about liberal vs conservative teens. What about depression among the majority, who are not partisan? Is it more, less?
Simpler put. Conservatives tend to act like parents and cater and teach the kids to survive through life. Liberal parents cater to the problems of their kids never encouraging the kid to overcome them. Even applauding victim status for the kids.
"And the parents don’t want to hear anything about any religious doubts or the teen’s not feeling they are getting anything positive out of the family’s enforced church life."
This sounds like a bit out of Mike's autobiography.
If you spend your whole life thinking that slightly warmer weather is an existential threat to life on Earth, the stress eventually gets to you.
Please show us the Experts Clause of the Constitution, Justices Sotomayor and Kagan
https://hotair.com/headlines/2023/03/01/please-show-us-the-experts-clause-of-the-constitution-justices-sotomayor-and-kagan-n534278
This is a nonsense argument from Sotomayor. First off, the question before the Court is not “how much aid” to give to students. The question before the Court is whether the statute it is examining — the 2003 HEROES Act — confers upon the executive branch the power to do what it’s trying to do. If it does, it does. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. The amount of aid doesn’t enter into that calculation. Neither does the level of “expertise and experience” exhibited by the incumbent Secretary of Education. That Secretary could have the most sparkling mind in American history, or he could be a total moron, and, in both cases, the issue before the Court would be same: “Does he have the power to do it?” There is no provision within the United States Constitution that accords unlimited power to bureaucrats simply because some people consider them to be well-credentialed.
As for Sotomayor’s suggestion that, by superintending this statutory matter, the Court is taking it upon itself to set policy, “instead of leaving that decision in the hands of the person who has experience with these questions,” that too is absolute rot.
Pop quiz: which justice said this?

1) Inflation
2) Tremendous increase in US debt
3) Lawlessness
4) Now 6 years of taxpayer money spent on a Trump fishing expedition
5) Afghanistan!
Feel free to add more...
How could we forget:
6) Proxy war with nuclear-armed nation!
After four years of screaming "Trump's going to collapse the economy and start WW3" they immediately collapsed the economy and started WW3.
The researchers say they adjusted for these factors. But it's difficult to adjust for such a wide range of differences and all the complex metabolic processes that they entail.
Is there a more "The Science" notion that "We know all the factors and adjusted for them."? If you knew all the factors up front, didn't control for any of them, and just adjusted everything afterwards, why even run the experiment?
Borrowing Feynman's Cargo-cult (and maybe combining the Useless machine), it's like taking torch-wielding natives, giving them all college degrees in aviation management, aviation mechanics, civil engineering, electrical engineering, etc., etc. releasing them back onto their native island and coming back a year later to discover a perfectly built airport with planes taking off, flying just beyond radar range of the tower, and turning around to line up and come in for a landing.
Sen Fetterman is SOMEHOW co-sponsoring legislation. In spite of being debilitated and locked in a hospital for an indefinite amount of time with zero outside contact with him.
His Chief of Staff tends to block folks on Twitter asking who is signing the bills on his behalf given that he clearly is not doing it.
Democrats don't give a shit about this man, his health, or the public's perceived legitimacy of any action taken on his behalf. All they care about is power. Having a barely sentient vegetable propped up with string is completely fine, so long as he has a D after his name.
I pointed out months ago that the Dems don't need a functioning human being to be in that seat--they just need someone to vote along the party line 100% of the time. All they need to do is tell Fetterman what his vote has to be, and he'll go along. That's his role.
It's also why Sinema got exiled despite being 95% aligned with the Democratic agenda; the only reason they haven't done the same to Manchin is because they have no hope in hell of any other Democrat holding on to that seat.
the only reason they haven’t done the same to Manchin is because they have no hope in hell of any other Democrat holding on to that seat.
Yet AOC and others seem set on giving it the ol' progressive try anyway.

The Bee hammered this one a couple days ago:
Senator Fetterman Confirms Her Husband Still Hospitalized.
Someone joked a few days ago that a road trip to Toronto might cheer him up, but I'm starting to wonder if he actually gets MAID In Canada!, they keep it on the down-low for a few days, then report that he "tragically suffered another stroke and died" so his whore wife can take over the seat like Biden said she would.

Stick a bunch of drunken bums in hotels; what could possibly go wrong?
BTW, those room were "available" because of the shut-down mandated by grease-ball Newsom and the equally brain-dead Breed.

From 2005 to 2018, 19.8% of students identified as liberal and 18.1% identified as conservative
So, 62% didn’t identify as liberal or conservative. Good for them! Hope they are the least depressed group of all.
Or, maybe like me, they are somewhat depressed by having to share their country with a bunch of partisan locked in an idiotic Red Team vs Blue Team culture war.
It is amusing how much you lie to yourself as you constantly defend left narratives.

“locked in an idiotic Red Team vs Blue Team culture war.”
Note he didn’t say “an idiotic Blue Team vs Red Team”. That’s because Mike’s the blue tribe's medicine man.

Commonly know as LastPass.
Does the artificial sweetener erythritol cause heart attacks and strokes?
Absolutely! When paired with COVID vaccines! Amirite?!
No, the vaccines are safe, it's this new *checks notes* artificial sweetener.
The vaccines are safe.
and you lol my hyperbole.
Anti-vax on!
very little to be on about.
100% safe and effective with no downsides!
Doesn't matter if they're safe or not, they didn't work, and thus they were a dismal failure we spent way too much money on.
Plus: Liberal teens are more depressed than conservative ones, the outsize role of immigrants in U.S. innovation, and more...
Duh... DUH! And I don't mean that cynically, I mean that in all earnestness.
The left has become an anti-humanist doomsday cult. Teens are "instructed" that the world is ending in *checks notes* 9 years, the world is *checks notes* overpopulated, climate change, a deadly virus that kills everyone dead with 99% certainty unless yo social distance and wear a mask forever and ever, amen, everything is racist, everything is sexist, women can't get healthcare, you must go to college to make a good living, but you'll be saddled with student loan debt until the end of your serviceable life, half the country are Nazis.
They REALLY need to get out of this mindset.
I mean Jesus, you've got young girls, in the prime of their life, literally crying on Tik Tok about what a dystopian capitalist society we live in. This is not a healthy way to live.
Clean your room.
They REALLY need to get out of this mindset.
The battle for the minds of the youth was lost to the PEUs. The creation of multiple layers of administration between school boards and teachers has allowed a complete disconnect between the will of the people and what is actually taught. Marxist rhetoric goes unchallenged except by parents, who are summarily dismissed for lack of expertise.
This mindset is the goal. It is not enough to tolerate Big Brother, you must believe that only through him can you be saved. That takes a real existential crisis. That comes from fear or despair.
Since Ernst Rohm and Ray Cohn, the gay rights movement is pretty much just an endless cycle of LGBTQ+ people victimizing themselves/each other and pretty openly too. Even Oscar Wilde is notoriously regarded as having been persecuted because he was gay but the whole reason the issue came up is because one of his lovers' fathers insulted him for it and he filed suit for defamation.
The list of things you're supposed to be deathly afraid of is exponentially higher on the left than it is on the right.
There exist cases of such things for both, obviously, but those fears on the right are usually not sold in every from of entertainment and media across all market sectors.
Basically, the anti-humanist left has a much better marketing department. Which makes sense, since you don't want idiots trying to sell suicide and death to the people. That takes skill and, perhaps more importantly, the keys to the kingdom to shut down dissenting voices.
Everything is so terrible and unfair!!!! (Tm)
I'm posting this again, because it is the link of the year, and I got it in kind of late last night. This is THE most unintentionally hilarious take I have ever read. Ever.

Q: How do you get the left to defend Qualified Immunity?
A: Start suing them.
So, it's happening, but it doesn't matter.
"It's okay when we do it" is basically the Democratic Party's slogan at this point.
Can you please provide a link to whatever you are quoting from?
No, Reason ate the link. Google "lawsuit trans qualified immunity" and throw in some of the text of that quote. You'll get numerous hits.
This? From a couple of months ago?
https://www.masslive.com/news/2022/12/federal-judge-rules-in-favor-of-ludlow-schools-in-lawsuit-over-treatment-of-transgender-students.html
That's not the link I posted. There were others. I haven't read your link and I can't at the moment, but that might be a version of it.
Interesting. Although the judge felt he had to rule for the school district, he did scold them for hiding the matter from the parents:
https://www.foxnews.com/us/judge-dismisses-ma-parents-lawsuit-school-gender-policy-scolds-district-disconcerting
I can’t find much on the Internet about this matter other than stories about the civil rights lawsuit. It would be interesting to know the attitude of the community (Springfield, MA), how school board meetings have gone, etc.
Yes, as I posted in my original quote, the judge was disturbed at the school maintaining "secret" communications with the students. And that reminds me of what the BSA are specifically prohibited from doing, as it represents "grooming" behavior.
“grooming” behavior
Captain Oveur:
Joey, have you ever been in a Turkish prison?
It's weird. 40 years ago, grooming behavior was so recognizable you could make a joke about it without the need for a punchline. I wonder what has changed...
nice to see you.
It would be interesting to know the attitude of the community (Springfield, MA), how school board meetings have gone, etc.
Because administrative interference in parental responsibilities is all about the feelz? Because if it is only affecting a few parents or "bad" parents then it is acceptable?
Black holes only wish they were as dense as you.
You know if you put quotes around a series of words into Google it will find you the fucking cite with that specific string of words right dumbfuck?
It's Mike. I think he's stuck in 1997 regarding the internet.

Good luck with that, Goog...
But it’s clearly a threat as Canada gets closer to passing a law requiring dominant platforms to negotiate fair compensation with news publishers.
I know it's fashionable, even blasé to say everything is a human right but in all the "equality before the law" B.S. we really have lost sight of what's important: compelling leading corporations of one industry to negotiate better deals with their predecessors. I mean, forget treating people of different creeds, races, color, and biological sex equal under the law, what is equality if not compulsory fairness between international media platforms and conventional news publishers?

Are these two married or something? ENB is literally teh only person online who ever references this dunce positiviely?
I think it’s more that these Gen-X pundits that started coming into prominence during the blogosphere days in the early-mid 2000s basically all know and hang out with each other going back over 20 years. So it’s really just re-posting stuff their buddies are producing.
Hey, props to Yglesias for losing a bunch of weight, at least. Dude was fucking FAT for years, his doctor must have told him he was pre-diabetic or something.
The encrypted messaging app Signal says it will stop providing U.K. services if the country's proposed Online Safety Bill passes
I genuinely dont understand what England can do about it.
Signal is not for profit, the servers dont have to be in England. Who cares what the bill says. How would they enforce it?
Immigration and whores , but no food trucks. We almost had a hat trick this time.
Well, there was a Matthew Yglesias mention...

Reason '... people should be skeptical of you because we said something everyone knows is difficult, is difficult..'.

While accounting for just 16 percent of all US-based inventors, immigrant inventors produce nearly a quarter of total innovation output as gauged by the number of patents and patent citations and the economic value of the patents.
I’m remembering a bunch of articles that were claiming that immigrants were also responsible for founding an outsize number of new businesses.
That happens to be true, but what was left unsaid was that virtually all of the businesses were founded by immigrants from Europe and Asia, and pretty much by none of them from anywhere else.
So, I am very interested to know – which immigrants are responsible for all of this innovation? Something tells me it’s not farm workers from Guatamala doing all this innovating.
Something tells me it’s not farm workers from Guatamala [sic] doing all this innovating.
Only because white guys already swooped up all the patents for weed processing.
The Contribution of High-Skilled Immigrants to Innovation in the United States
Shai Bernstein, Rebecca Diamond, Abhisit Jiranaphawiboon, Timothy McQuade & Beatriz Pousada
Uh huh.
That happens to be true, but what was left unsaid was that virtually all of the businesses were founded by immigrants from Europe and Asia, and pretty much by none of them from anywhere else.
Agreed about what was left unsaid, but the “That happens to be true” statement is exceedingly generous. Namely, they chose something like the Top Fortune 500 companies from like 1990-2001 and from 2010-2020 or something just, absolutely and unbelievably retardedly broken like that. Then they doubled and tripled down on the confirmation bias by either Googling and/or searching Fortune for founders' nationalities (which, foreign founders tend to say “I’m from [foreign country].” while native founders tend not to say “I’m from America.”) and discarding large portions of founders of unknown origin, counting someone with dual citizenship as an immigrant, counting people without US citizenship as an immigrant, etc. Subsequently, after acknowledging their guesswork on their nationality data, proceeded to do a variety of analyses from the assumptions “Companies founded by at least one immigrant were founded by immigrants” to “Companies founded by anything less than 100% immigrants were founded by immigrants”. Unsurprisingly, their results were that if you assume a company with any immigrant founder is founded by immigrants, immigrants found more companies but if you assume 50/50 the conclusion isn’t clear and, if you assume only 100% immigrant companies are immigrant owned, the original conclusion isn’t true.
It’s the same as the erythritol stupidity above: Scientismist: “We don’t have to study *all* businesses owned by Americans and Immigrants, we can just study some and correct for everything we didn’t look at when we do our analysis.” Anyone with a shred of ethics or scientific understanding: “‘It’s OK, I’ve got a broom.’ only fixes the problem of the broken shit you left lying on the floor, it doesn’t actually fix the shit you broke by knocking it onto the floor and acting like it does is dishonest and stupid.”
Erythriol isn’t an artificial sweetener.
Let me guess. By some technicality in the definition of "artificial sweetener" that you have just declared a universal truth, despite the fact that the rest of the world uses it otherwise, erythritol is a food additive, not an artificial sweetener.
I’m pretty sure it fits the current definition of a vaccine.
Edit: On a related note, they've plunged ahead on this front too:
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/vaccine
b: a preparation of genetic material (such as a strand of synthesized messenger RNA) that is used by the cells of the body to produce an antigenic substance (such as a fragment of virus spike protein)
So, what *used* to just be "a preparation that is administered (as by injection) to stimulate the body's immune response against a specific infectious agent or disease" has specifically been broken down and re-written to *specifically* include a (the) mRNA 'vaccine' whether they (it) generates any real-world immunity or not.
Erythritol occurs naturally in fruits and in the human body. Commercially, it is produced by fermentation, just like alcohol. That's why it's not an "artificial sweetener".
Erythritol is elevated in heart disease patients as a consequence of disease alone, even in the absence of ingesting it, so it's not surprising that elevated levels correlate with elevated heart attack risk. Whether there is anything more to this remains to be seen.

Why are liberal teens more depressed than conservative teens?
Their moms want them to be. Munchausen and Munchausen by proxy is very high in Liberal White Lady America. Moms all have anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, celiac or gluten intolerance, migraines, etc. They also compete in the Disordered Child Olympics, where you get your child diagnosed on as many spectrums as possible, and whoever has the most fucked up kid wins.
Real sugar is always better for you (and tastes better) than artificial sweeteners. If you eat something sweet, your brain expects a big calorie boost. When it doesn't arrive, it makes you even hungrier. It's why you never seen a thin person drinking diet soda.
If your sugar comes in the form of fruits, that's true. In that case, it is absorbed slowly. Even then, you have to consume it in moderation.
Refined sugar, sugary drinks, and fruit juices are universally bad for you no matter what.
Both yours and CE's statements are pretty generally incorrect. Namely, there is no one substance known as "real sugar". Sucrose is "table sugar". Fructose is generally referred to as "fruit sugar" as it's not largely produced *on its own* by grains and starchy vegetables. Glucose is what most carbohydrates get broken down into. Of the three, Fructose is the sweetest, sucrose (a combination of fructose and glucose) is in the middle, and glucose is the least sweet. Plain to see that even normal people consider glucose less flavorful or "more artificial" as the market is chock full of High-Fructose products, but not High-Glucose ones.
Further, as indicated, if there is "a sugar that comes in the form of fruits", it's fructose, and it's actually absorbed extremely quickly as it breaks down quicker than glucose. The distinction being that, assuming you aren't constantly eating fruit or HFCS or mixing several different simple and complex carbohydrates, fructose produces less of an insulin spike than other sugars, so it gets broken down and burned quicker rather than getting stored. Now, if you're constantly inundating your blood with HFCS or other sugars the insulin does spike and the fructose gets stored.
Does reading Reason cause heart attacks and strokes?
If you feel like light headed and chest pain, just calm down, breathe deeply and slowly and read the comment section where most people will certainly point out Reasons bias and stupidity. You are not alone.
Liberal teens are more depressed than conservative ones,
Libs are taught they are the wrong sex, oppressors with no chance of redemption or oppressed with no chance of success. That everything is a problem, but you have no control over your life to solve any problems. That the world owes you an education, and a living. You should have to do nothing, but should be rewarded like those that work hard if you just sit and wait, the "government" will just give it to you if you give up your liberty and freedom.
Conservatives are taught to love freedom and liberty, no one owes you anything, but America provides opportunity to all, it is up to you to go out and work hard to get that. What you want is within your grasp if you are wiling to work, and god is with you.
I wonder why liberal young people are so unhappy?

Sarc still hasn't posted his list.
Hihn’s enemies list was pretty good back in the day. I was listed four times. Made me proud.
Who responds to most of my posts, yet never gets a reply? There's your answer.
I wonder if anyone will be able to tell.
It's hilarious. She was mostly Greek, and the Ptolemies were fairly well inbred for generations.

"You plead for my attention"
Sarc's projection has officially reached meme status.
We have no clue who you've muted other than your word for it. Therefore, we've little clue who is on your list (or if it even exists in the first place).

yes. sad.
I'd question whether any of them ever knew how to drive in the first place.
Especially considering that it doesn't have a Florida.
Here, around Chicagoland? The FIBs never knew how to drive before.
They have to light up the night somehow. 😉
Lefty playbook: always accuse your critics of your most shameful behaviors.
You plead for my attention every day like spoiled pets.
Few creatures are as glutenous for attention as abandoned addicts who no longer have their families as an outlet for their abuse.
lol ruin my fun, outlier.
Good question. I wanted to see if Truthteller1 would elaborate why he asks so often.
Conservative kids come from stable, two parent families with traditional values. They probably don't have a whole lot of "emotional problems."
Oh Sarc, so eager to play. Yet so reluctant to admit it.
He rapes staffers, and even his own pre pubescent daughter. So bestiality isn’t much of a stretch.
The Bidens are a sick fucking family.
"Those mean girl bitches! Why are they so hot?"
That’s a sweeping generalization.
