To Increase 'Equity,' This California High School Is Eliminating Honors Courses
"I was born in Cuba, and it doesn't sound good when people are trying to achieve equal outcomes for everyone," said one parent.

One California high school has eliminated honors classes for ninth- and 10th-grade students. While school officials claim that the change was necessary to increase "equity," the move has angered students and parents alike.
"We really feel equity means offering opportunities to students of diverse backgrounds, not taking away opportunities for advanced education and study," one parent who opposed the change told The Wall Street Journal.
Starting this school year, Culver City High School, a public school in a middle-class suburb of Los Angles, eliminated its honors English classes for ninth- and 10th-graders. Instead, students are only able to enroll in one course called "College Prep" English. The decision, according to school administrators, came after teachers noticed that only a small number of black and Hispanic students were enrolling in Advanced Placement (A.P.) courses.
"It was very jarring when teachers looked at their AP enrollment and realized Black and brown kids were not there. They felt obligated to do something," said Quoc Tran, the district's superintendent. According to an article by The Wall Street Journal's Sara Randazzo, data presented at a school board meeting last year showed that Latino students made up 13 percent of 12th-grade A.P. English students, despite comprising 37 percent of the student body, while black students made up 14 percent of A.P. English students while comprising 15 percent of the student body.
"School officials say the goal is to teach everyone with an equal level of rigor, one that encourages them to enroll in advanced classes in their final years of high school," Randazzo notes.
However, parents—and students—disagree. "There are some people who slow down the pace because they don't really do anything and aren't looking to try harder," Emma Frigola, a ninth-grader at the school, said. "I don't think you can force that into people." She added that the curriculum has been made easier to accommodate less advanced students.
"For a unit on research, Emma said her teacher gathered all the reference sources they needed to write a paper on whether graffiti is art or vandalism and had students review them together in class," Randazzo wrote. "Her sister, Elena Frigola, now in 11th grade, said prior honors English students chose their own topics and did research independently."
Despite school officials' concerns about equity, black students were almost exactly proportionally represented in A.P. courses—just one percentage point off. It's also possible that part of the reason why Latino students are underrepresented in A.P. courses is that the data don't differentiate between students who are and aren't fluent in English.
According to Education Data Partnership, an organization that works with the California Department of Education to provide data on state schools, 36 percent of students at Culver City High School did not speak English as their primary language during the 2021–22 school year. While only 5 percent of students were classified as "English Learners" (80 percent of whom speak Spanish), it's worth considering that a significant portion of students deemed "fluent" English speakers might nonetheless feel unprepared for an A.P. English course. With most English learners being Spanish speakers, it's possible that the percentage of Latino students taking A.P. courses would be much more proportional to the percentage of Latino students in the grade if the data only considered those students who speak English as their first language.
However, even if some ethnic groups are still underrepresented, nixing advanced courses is not the solution.
"I just don't see how removing something from some kids all of a sudden helps other kids learn faster," one education researcher told The Wall Street Journal.
When schools eliminate educational opportunities for gifted students, those who are most hurt by the change are disadvantaged, academically talented students. While wealthier families can move to a new school district or enroll their children in private school, low-income parents—and their kids—are stuck. While getting rid of honors courses was supposedly designed to help black and Latino students, it will deprive opportunities of many of the same kids it was intended to help.
"I was born in Cuba," said one parent, "and it doesn't sound good when people are trying to achieve equal outcomes for everyone."

Children with better parents, more aptitude and a higher level of drive should be held back because of…feelingz.
Really it's to obscure the school's objective performance markers. That way, the administration gets fewer questions about its incompetence.
And protect teacher unions / educator unions. Their jobs are very important, and it needs to be impossible to fire them, and their continued employment is more important than your child's education.
Blacks are stupid.
Therefore, brains are racist.
this is the path to idiocracy. everyone will be dumbed down so that no one is offended
Agreed. Also, what are the chances that basketball will get shut down (in the schools) because whites (especially SHORT whites) are under-represented?
Well, that's the point, isn't it? To create a society that is ruled rather than represented. If you have enough people that are dumb enough to champion your edicts, they will cow or drive out the smart ones that see your edicts as false. Idiocracy is already here. We are living in it right now and it hasn't even reached peak yet.
Indeed. It makes me wonder why Chairman Xi bothers to maintain a military -- the greatest risk to his expansion plans is the US and the US is working very hard on destroying itself via self inflicted injuries. China is known to take the "long view" and for being very patient -- all Xi has to do is wait...
I've made $1250 so far this week working online and I'm a full time student. I'm using an online business opportunity I heard about and I'AM made such great money. It's really user friendly and I'm just so happy that I found out about it. Here's what I do, .for more information simply.

Superintendent Quoc Tran, eh? I'm guessing from the name that's 2nd or 3rd generation Vietnamese whose ancestors came over in the mid 1970s. Seems he could learn something from the parent who was born in Cuba. Such a shame to have lost such simple insight in just a generation or two.
Wonder what percentage are Asians?
Culver City High School demographics:
https://www.publicschoolreview.com/culver-city-high-school-profile
12% are Asian.
Home earnings allow all people to paint on-line and acquire weekly bills to financial institutions. Earn over $500 each day and get payouts each week instantly to account for financial institutions. (bwj-03) My remaining month of earnings was $30,390 and all I do is paint for as much as four hours an afternoon on my computer. Easy paintings and constant earnings are exquisite with this job.

I'd bet 1/3 to one half of the Advanced classes were, though.
Asians = privileged white people, unless a hate crime can be fabricated.
It's amazing how quick they become victims of the extremist MAGA right when young black men start randomly beating the shit out of them. They should know better than to outperform the other minorities in school, though.
The article says this change was done by teachers not the district superintendent (a job that wouldn't exist if schools were managed by a school board and the school principal) Which surprises me a bit.
Maybe the teachers were uncomfortable trying to teach students whose aptitude exceeded their own.
Quoc Tran is definitely a Vietnamese name, but anyone old enough to be school superintendent most likely was either brought over as a small child in the 70s or is the 1st generation born in the States (a grandchild of those who immigrated after the war would be early-20s at the absolute oldest).
They shouldn't need to consult with someone born in Cuba to hear an unflattering account of communist rule, I'd almost guarantee they were raised by people who fled such a system themselves.
Just found a bio.
Quoc Tran grew up in Vietnam during the war, and got to the USA at age 17 after and unspecified amount of time spent in a refugee camp in Maylasia. Odds are he has some first-hand memories of communist rule's conception of "making everyone equal" (although the party officals always seem to be "more equal" than the rest at some point in time).
Just to be clear. Dumb kids will still be dumb kids. Mandatory brain damage for anyone with an IQ over 100 would be more effective at achieving equity.
Mandatory brain damage for anyone with an IQ over 100 would be more effective at achieving equity.
Probably shouldn't give them any ideas.
I'd rather have the bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.
There won't be a wealth gap once they make everybody poor.
All dead people have nearly perfect equity with each other.
death the ultimate equalizer
Probably shouldn’t give them any ideas.
To promote athletic equity, we're taking all the fastest runners and breaking their legs.
Athletics do not lack for diversity [lack of proportional non-bipoc representation is only a tangible show of progress, by the way]; therefore your view, albeit quite poignant, is cancelled.
You hater!
Harrison Bergeron was not an instruction manual!
[dammit, didn't scroll down far enough.]
I think it's hilarious that English teachers don't realize that neither 1984 nor Harrison Bergeron was an instruction manual.
Brave New World
I'd be surprised if those books are allowed in the school's library.
Not in Britain. Deemed far right.
Another country that should overthrow their government amd execute all the Marxists.
As long as Genderqueer is available all the way down to Kindergarten it's all good.
Don't leave out Brave New World, the road to hell is much easier when everyone is drugged into compliance and instant gratification is plentiful and removable for bad behavior.
My thoughts exactly.
Fortunately they only read Harrison Bergeron in honors English, now cancelled.
"There are some people who slow down the pace because they don't really do anything and aren't looking to try harder," Emma Frigola, a ninth-grader at the school, said. "I don't think you can force that into people." She added that the curriculum has been made easier to accommodate less advanced students.
My God, a blatant white supremacist!! This girl needs to be cancelled immediately!
they don’t really do anything and aren’t looking to try harder
And they will become Education majors.
So they have done enough uplifting people, now it's time to drag people down. It was going to happen eventually.
Common denominator.
Wait, math, that's literally white supremacy!
My bad.
Soon they will be saying that literacy is white supremacy.
"Soon," you say?
STG this is the kind of bullshit, left unfettered, that will inaugurate the Fourth Reich. What Hitler could not accomplish by war the woke will bring about with idiocracy.
Capping achievement is much easier than trying to uplift students who showed up for first grade nearly feral.
Equality is the lowest common denominator.

I can fix all education, social, budget, and foreign problems in the us
Step 1: kill all the marxists
When will you announce your candidacy?
I'd normally say cancel public ed, but the truth is that at this stage, such a fix is pointless. Until we can accept that universal education doesn't actually produce benefits, we will continue to bend over backwards forcing outcomes to be equal.
"It was very jarring when teachers looked at their AP enrollment and realized Black and brown kids were not there. They felt obligated to do something," said Quoc Tran, the district's superintendent.
"Therefore, the district decided to force *all* Black and brown kids to enroll in AP courses. Well, not *force* exactly: we pay them to attend at least one class."
Well, they also had a population of 14% black students compared to 15% of the school's enrollment. So maybe those teachers just didn't notice that most of their school isn't black until they woke up one day.
So maybe those teachers just didn’t notice that most of their school isn’t black until they woke up one day.
Are we woke?
I wonder if the teacher would have had a similar reaction if they noticed there weren't any white students.
Probably not.
When I was in middle school, Title 1 reading classes were conducted in a little windowless room off of the mechanical shop. I believe they did that to conceal the fact that all of the students in the class were Black.
Great article, Mike. I appreciate your work, I’m now creating over $35,500 dollars each month simply by doing a simple job online! I do know You currently making a lot of greenbacks online from $28,500 dollars, its simple online operating jobs.

I wonder if they seek racial equity on their sports teams.
A lot of school sports teams have achieved 100% equity.
More ?blessings? from Commie-Education. /s
It's really fascinating watching the constant lowering of the bar on almost a daily basis that occurs in our society.
When did we become so anathema to success, accomplishment, and actual progress?
Cultural marxism won.
The March Through The Institutions is complete.
Equity – Knocking the cognitive elite down because you can't make morons smarter.
Well, you can't fix stupid.
If we just stopped subsidizing the reproduction of unmarried indigent women, IQs would begin to rise.
There are much better options than AP or Honors courses.
Both our kids entered Middle College programs as High School Juniors. High school classes in the mornings and college classes in the afternoons.
The college classes were FULLY transferable and cost $0 because the kids were still in "high school". By the end of the program each one had more than 20 transferable units allowing them to shave a year off their "4 year" programs at UC and graduate early.
Yes, one of my kids did that and garnered 26 college credits while in high school. Got to where she spent about an hour a day in her high school because she had to show up at least that much. And attended a much higher than average public school, for what it's worth.
The future will not look kindly on these morons.
It will be the responsibility of the able to do the work, while the rest stay home and collect UBI. It will be the least they can do to atone for their privilege of being white, Asian, "ableist," and beneficiaries of 1619.
The UBI crowd will then be able to spend all of their time finding new ways to discover and prosecute systemic racism, misogyny, and other hateful and perceived wrongs.
that's already happening now it's just the "UBI" crowd are HR and DEI folks. These jobs are bullshit sinecures. next step is just to have them stay home and collect UBI while bitching about racistmisogyny online
AKA "boneheads."
""It was very jarring when teachers looked at their AP enrollment and realized Black and brown kids were not there. They felt obligated to do something," said Quoc Tran, the district's superintendent."
Aside from the statistical evidence that this may not be an accurate impression, their first instinct to "do something" is not make sure that the "Black and brown" students were learning, they decided to dumb down everything. What the hell?
Bigotry of low expectations. It's gross and destructive.
Often the low expectations are justified. Not much teachers can do with "students" who show up at high school illiterate and unsocialized.
Hey, they're all even now, right?
Work is done, can all go home now.
Now repeat that but with 'white' instead of 'black'.
"It was jarring when teachers looked at their AP enrollment and realized white kids were not there. they felt obligated to do something"
This would be the most racist thing EVAR.
That would be the football and basketball coaches. And they've no reason to jam white kids into their lineups, because everyone knows that in sports it's all about merit. The best players play.
"No child getting ahead" has been the true goal of public schools ever since they unionized.
You'll know nothing and be happy.
I’d say we’re already past that point.
Edit: one thing I hate about this guy's videos is that he says "yes" when these dumb-asses get incredibly easy questions wrong. He should mock and shame them mercilessly for being fucktards.
Wokism: Keeping BIPOC students of talent down!
Wokism is not about social justice, it's about everyone being identical. A thousand flavors of gender identities, but all the same because the overriding principle is collectivist sameness. So keep the gifted black student down lest they get uppity. Mass conformity of not only ideology, but also conformity of mediocrity.
Wokesters were too late to stop Asians from working hard and succeeding, but they are here now to stop Blacks and Latinos from doing the same.
The woke needs victims as surrogates for their ideology. Without them who would they be able to advocate for, and advocacy is central to their mission. Otherwise they have to rely on climate change for a catalyst to gain greater control.
Wokism is not about social justice, it’s about everyone being identical.
Not true. People are not identical except on these data points, so this "equality" is merely a waypoint. Once demonstrated competence is equal across the board then decisions will have to be made based on other factors. The next step is to replace the traditional evaluation criteria with political reliability like they have already done in academia, media, and government.
By doing this they ensure everyone involved in the power structure owes their career to left wing politics, which creates incredible loyalty with themselves perched at the top.
Until they start eating their young, then it all collapses.
Bring on the struggle sessions!
I believe wokism THINKS it's about social justice, but the entire ideology is a dumpster fire of nonsense that consumes a massive amount of resources yet ultimately does more harm than good.
The fundamental flaw of wokism is the assumption that everyone naturally has perfectly equal aptitude and that our level of intellectual capability is entirely a product of our environment/experience. This assumption completely removes the concept of intelligence from the equation, which is entirely inappropriate and frankly absurd.
I genuinely don't believe that there is any kind of malicious intent inherent to wokism, but the harm that results from its practice is very real, so it must be stopped. I think we should assume that the adherents to this ideology are well-intentioned but incapable of understanding the harm they cause. We won't change their minds by telling them they're wrong, but if we can understand their perspective and motivations, then we might have a (very slim) chance to reason with them.
If you had followed the controversies of the English Comprehensive Grammar Schools (and their eventual elimination) you'd have known this was coming here.
Competence is a right-wing concept. Prove me wrong.
Peter Hitchens on the death of the British Grammar school.
That certainly explains the Biden-Harris ticket and Biden's cabinet - no competence in sight anywhere.
"I don't have any opinions anymore. All I know is that no one is better than anyone else, and everyone is the best at everything."
--Principal Seymour Skinner
The kids aren't dumb, its the grownups.
If you want more AP capable kids, add more supplemental courses to bring the under-performers up to snuff; don't eliminate the AP courses from the top. Now your top performers can't put AP courses on their transcripts which would give them an edge in getting into tech colleges, you idgits.
add more supplemental courses to bring the under-performers up to snuff
Most of the time that won't work. Stupidity is a real thing.
As always the answer is to just get rid of public schools. Problem solved.
Culver City is less than 15 miles from the Eat Los Angeles school where Jaime Escalante taught. Escalante showed that Black and Latino students could do advanced Calculus IF THE TEACHERS EXPECTED IT OF THEM. Don’t condemn a generation of students to reduced educational opportunities due to the “soft bigotry of low expectations.” Teachers are there to teach, not bitch about demographics.
I'm pretty sure Jaime Escalante was a White Supremacist. You can tell because he had White Supremacist values of high expectations and accuracy.
Yeah, but then the parents got all uppity and demanded other teachers do their job, so the teachers union kicked him out.
Oh dear. It would seem that Equity, in its current iteration, is doomed to yield frightfully low returns. Per chance, is it time to step back and….oh what’s the annoying buzzword I’m looking for….Reimagine all this ideological crapola?
I dunno. Look at how long Islam has survived.
Unfortunately, there is more of this drive to get rid of AP classes to achieve some sort of equity, it is not limited to California. What really sad is that this is the easy answer, because the tough answer is how to get more minority and poor kids into classes. You cannot stop inequities by hold some back, the answer is to move more forward.
"I was born in Cuba, and it doesn't sound good when people are trying to achieve equal outcomes for everyone,"
Let's ask her in a couple of weeks how she feels being on an FBI watch list?
If this was said at a school board meeting, she most certainly is. How dare she question authority, or their narratives! No doubt the Cuban bitch is a collaborating white supremacist!
The Hot, Latina face of White Supremacy!
She was already on the watch list just for being Cuban.
These people either don't know what the word equity means or they are deliberately attempting to radically change the definition.
Either way they are wrong.
Pulling kids who excel down does not improve those who have less ability succeed!
This is just a cover for inept and irresponsible unionized teachers who need to be weeded out of the system.
Meanwhile, Florida is considering removing all AP courses because sometimes they teach things that hurt the feelings of white people.
Cite, *including motive*, or simply fuck off and die.
I'm sorry the public education system failed you at taxpayers' expense.
Lies, damned lies, and stat...oh wait, math is racist. Lies, damned lies, and more lies!
Escerenigma,
Not true.
Governor DeSantis has declared that woke dies in Florida.
My children attend an a rated school in Florida and there are no plans to cancel the .
AP or the AICE program
Please show us your citation for this claim
A simple question for those who support this idea.
Would you want a professional, especially a medical professional, who was trained in equity, i.e, mediocre or less, courses or someone who took the most challenging and rigorous courses and succeeded?
We can only hope they hire equity trained lawyers to defend their case against true, professional, attorneys and it is heard by a truly trained and professional judge.
Thomas Sowell proved decades ago, that teachers graduate in the bottom of their college/university classes. This is the proof, via the intervening generations, that he was correct.
"...teachers looked at their AP enrollment and realized Black and brown kids were not there. They felt obligated to do something..."
Even if you believe that the school can fix this, it's telling that their solution was "eliminate honors classes" instead of "revise K-8 so that more minorities qualify for honors classes". That's a pretty clear indication that they don't really care about improving education. They just want to hold back the overachievers.
"...They just want to hold back the overachievers."
I'd see them as trying to justify their lack of teaching skills; avoiding blame.

So, that's why Cain killed Able?
So…. an Ableist are you? CANCELED!!
The U.S. will die on the hill of equity, while other nations realize that the best and brightest should advance. Glad I’ll probably be dead in another 20 years, and that I didn’t have kids.
"The U.S. will die on the hill of equity, while other nations realize that the best and brightest should advance..."
Bad as the US is, not seeing better. Suggestions appreciated.
"I applaud this school's wise policy."
- Diana Moon Glampers
Could any of the English teachers in this high school identify Diana Moon Glampers?
I hope they eliminate sports and dancing too, those subjects always made me feel stupid.
Very minor typo in the 3rd paragraph - 'Los Angles' vs. Los Angeles'
I’m the Cuban-born guy quoted in this story, and, for the record, just want to make my views a little bit clearer (although that was a fair one-sentence quote by the WSJ): The main point I was trying to make is that my daughters’ school district has been infected by the woke-mind virus, and are pursuing Equity at all cost – In fact the District’s motto is “Equity is our moral obligation" (You won't find this word clearly defined anywhere on their website, however). Many parents AND teachers reject this ideology but many are also not willing to publicly say so because of (reasonable) fear they will be outcast, branded a racist, or even fired from their jobs.
Arguing whether we should strive for equality of opportunity rather than equality of outcome should not be verboten, or vice-versa btw. Although, I think very good arguments backed up by now a century of empirical evidence has has shown the latter as a utopian fantasy with a proven track record of brining more misery to more people.
To badly paraphrase Shakespeare, a turd (of an idea) by any other name should smell as foul, but somehow this pleasant sounding name doesn't carry the same stench. And just to be clear, this turd of an idea is Equity – not equity based on providing disproportionate resources to individuals in need (or needless to say equal opportunity), but equity as operationally defined by our District based on artificially achieving equal outcomes via decree.
Equity is there just so morons who can’t keep up aren’t left behind. Meanwhile the smart kids are stuck and God forbid you should have some type of gifted class or accelerated learning why that would be racist…as we fall behind the rest of the world in science and math! Hey, at least we are number one in something tho unfortunately it’s diversity…inclusion and equity which isn’t gonna help this country compete.
"Spanish Language and Culture" is also an AP program. What ratio of Latin-X enrollment do you suppose schools see there? And do you think anyone whines about it?
And if Culver City doesn't offer the AP program in "Spanish Language and Culture", then there's your problem, not the imbalance in AP English.
If you are aspiring, then lose the Latin-X. There is no such thing.
Try Latino and Latina
The only way everyone can be a winner is by making everyone the loser.
I was born in Mexico. My twins were born in the United States. They were both in advanced classes from middle school on through high school. Not because they were Mexican but because of intelligence. So, to eliminate advance classes because there are not enough Mexicans (or blacks) is disturbing. The brown and black students who are in these classes are not there because of the color of their skin. They are there because of their intelligence. Then you go and eliminate the classes because why? Because there is not enough of other skin colors? Isn't that the definition of racist?
