Former Monroe County, Arkansas, judge Thomas Carruth was charged with three counts of honest services wire fraud, three counts of using a facility in interstate commerce in furtherance of unlawful activity, one count of bribery, one count of making false statements, and one count of obstruction of justice. Federal prosecutors say Carruth solicited sex from a defendant's girlfriend in exchange for making the charges against her boyfriend move more quickly through the judicial system.

Say you can't make bail and the court has a major backlog, you could easily spend months or even a year or more rotting in the county joint while awaiting trial for a charge that carries a maximum sentence of six months. And even if you're acquitted or the charges are ultimately dropped, they can't exactly give you back months of your life.

In the debate over electing vs appointing judges, this is a data point against electing. Specifically, Arkansas judges are selected via "nonpartisan" election.

In my city, judges are elected, but there’s no choices. Both the local democrats and republicans endorse each other’s candidates, as long as they meet the bar association committee.

So you get to election day and have to pick X number of judges out of X candidates. It’s like the system here is rigged.

The reason they do it is so that the judges won’t owe favors to either party, but I think it deprives the public of a real choice.

Louisiana elects judges also. I tried to get involved. Found out there are a lot of restrictions (law) preventing open discussion of past performance, predictions of future performance, financial and personal relationships... pretty much all that was printable was that Candidate X went to these schools, goes to this church, married/kids etc.

Appointed or elected isn't as important as making sure the judges know there is a lamppost outside their office.
