Debating Dr. Oz, John Fetterman Cannot Explain His About-Face on Fracking
Fetterman has auditory processing issues related to a stroke in May, but still had trouble explaining why he seems to have changed his mind.

When John Fetterman and Dr. Mehmet Oz, candidates for Pennsylvania's open Senate seat, met last night in Philadelphia for their one and only debate, it was perhaps inevitable that the subject of fracking would come up. Fetterman, the lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania, and Oz, a longtime daytime talk show host known for dispensing dubious medical advice, have each given conflicting statements on the gas extraction process in the past. Oz once wrote that fracking should be banned until further health studies were conducted, while Fetterman previously said in an interview that "I don't support fracking, at all and I never have." On the campaign trail, each candidate has since endorsed the practice.
Noting that the Keystone State is second only to Texas in natural gas production, the debate moderators presented the candidates with their respective shifting positions.
Oz barreled ahead, saying he was "consistent" in fully supporting the practice. He didn't explain his flip-flop, but he did affirm his current position that fracking is "a lifeline for this commonwealth."
Fetterman, however, had a harder time explaining the inconsistencies in his own record. When asked to square his previous statements with his current support of fracking as "part of our energy portfolio," Fetterman stammered, "I do support fracking. And, I don't, I don't—I support fracking, and I stand, and I do support fracking."
Fetterman could be forgiven for verbal slip-ups: The debate marked his first time speaking for an extended period on live television since suffering a stroke in May. As with an NBC News interview earlier this month, Fetterman used closed captioning to accommodate the auditory processing issues he stills suffers from. Despite a recent doctor's note claiming that he is "recovering well" with no diminished "cognitive ability," Fetterman's campaign released a memo ahead of the debate seemingly intent on lowering expectations of his performance.
But the candidate was notably able to answer and explain many other positions throughout the night, and even respond to his opponent's jabs—for example, when Oz criticized Fetterman for his support of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I–Vt.), Fetterman retorted that Oz had embraced Sanders in a 2019 appearance on his show and said, "I love this guy!"
Of course, energy policy has long been an uncomfortable subject for Democrats, balancing support of climate change mitigation with the nation's current energy needs. But it is notable that of all the questions asked, this one—on an issue critical to both his own state's fortunes as well as the nation's current economic reality—was the only one Fetterman was unable to find a clear answer to.

He should have dropped out after having a stroke.
This is just an insult to voters.
Knock - knock.
Who's there?
Not John Fetterman. Not anymore.
😀 😀 😀
Great article, Mike. I appreciate your work, I’m now creating over $35400 dollars each month simply by doing a simple job online! I do know You currently making a lot (vr-61) of greenbacks online from $28000 dollars, its simple online operating jobs

The Democrats didn't/Don't have anyone to replace him with and they need the seat.
My mothers neighbour is working part time and averaging $9000 a month. I’m a single mum and just got my first paycheck for $6546! I still can’t believe it. I tried it out cause I got really desperate and now I couldn’t be happier. Heres what I d ..https://www.pay.hiring9.com
He had the stroke before the primary. The left wants people who are easily controlled as their "elected" officials
What's truly an insult is that you can have a stroke and still think you're less-bad than the other guy - and maybe have a point in thinking that.
Never forget the De Tocqueville quote about democracy giving voters "the government they deserve".
H.L. Mencken: Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard
Pretty sure his presence in the Senate would have been (or may yet be) incidental to any votes cast or legislation forwarded.
Imagine being such a bad candidate that you lose to a stroke victim. It's worse than losing to a corpse. That's happened a few times, but usually because the candidate died right before the election and some people didn't realize they were dead. But no, Fetterman has campaigned while being a literal invalid, and may still win.
I'm going with the Bee on this one: why can't Pennsylvania simply elect to have no senator at all?
He's lying.
Next question?
Hi. Good Night everybody.
At least he didn't ask for Jackie. Is she here?
I want to see a Biden Fetterman debate.
They should make that a pay per view event. I would totally shell out $99.95 or whatever to watch that.
So about $0.10 before Bidenflation?
That's just spittin' tobaccy.
Of course, energy policy has long been an uncomfortable subject for Democrats, balancing support of climate change mitigation with the nation's current energy needs.
Climate change mitigation? When did the journolist come up with that idiotic talking point? I thought we were supposed to destroy the economy and modern civilization with it for all but the elites in the name of stopping climate change? What is this mitigation bullshit? Mitigation would be building dams around coastal cities so they can escape the wrath of the climate gods.
When it was clear that warming wasn't really happening either at all or anything like the cult claimed, "global warming" became "climate change". Now that even the dimmest bulbs in the media understand that nothing the cult proposes is going to do anything to stop the dreaded climate change, prevention has become "mitigation". Give me a fucking break.
"Climate Mitigation"
Like making cold areas warmer (heating)?
Like making hot areas cooler (air conditioning)?
Sounds energy intensive, no?
Yeah. They keep telling people to brace for a tough winter because of how much it'll cost to heat houses. What if we take the fight straight to winter? Instead of relying on Russian gas, let's just raise the temperatures so we don't even need it.
What if we just get rid of all the democrats, take their stuff, and erase their suicidal policies? That would fix almost everything.
Sounds reasonable. I'm still advocating for trebuchets to launch them into shark infested waters. More environmentally friendly than helicopters. 😀
"Like making cold areas warmer (heating)?
Like making hot areas cooler (air conditioning)?"
Most of the planet is outside.
Most people live inside.
Try going out doors sometime. There's a whole world out there.

All my favorite #Resistance social media personalities told me Fetterman came out of this looking fantastic. Miraculously he's in that precise zone of health where he's strong enough to be a Senator — but weak enough that criticizing him amounts to ABLEIST BULLYING.
#BlueWave2022
"he’s in that precise zone of health where he’s strong enough to be a Senator — but weak enough that criticizing him amounts to ABLEIST BULLYING."
Isn't even satire
To be fair, this is where any team blue candidate sits. The protective shield of grievance culture they use would be funny were it not sickening.
But it is notable that of all the questions asked, this one—on an issue critical to both his own state's fortunes as well as the nation's current economic reality—was the only one Fetterman was unable to find a clear answer to.
Fetterman is completely incoherent. He didn't give a clear answer to anything. I read somewhere last night that there must have been a long and continuous journolist meeting last night trying to figure out the talking points for this train wreck. Democrats desperately need Fetterman to win. So, they can't tell the truth and just abandon him the way they have with Abrams who they have concluded can't win. So, they have to spin it some way. I guess the decision was to say, "he did great except for that trick question about fracking". Yeah, that is the ticket.
David Harsanyi noted that Charlotte Alter, Jonathan's butt-ugly daughter, basically didn't do anything except parrot the DNC talking points on expectation management for him--"Well, he did better than we expected given his condition!" Fucking hacks.
Remember, these are the same people who made Donald Trump take a mental competency test. Love or hate Donald Trump, there is no denying he is mentally competent. He had to take a test to prove that. Meanwhile, the same people who demanded that claim Fetterman and Biden, two men who literally could not live alone and unassisted, are just fine and totally fit for office.
Fucking hacks is too weak a word to describe these people.
I stand against professional tests proving competency like this. I really, really hate that shit in politics.
There is a place for it though but much like Jim Crow literacy tests, Democrats have never met a rule they wouldn't attempt to use for political gain. You could disagree with Trump's policy but he could explain it and defend it, Biden and Lurch cannot even tell you what's going on most of the time.
not writing about his lack of fitness for office shows a bias.
He was able to give a clear answer to every question except that one on fracking. How did Lancaster write that with a straight face?
How did Lancaster write that with a straight face?
Maybe he just copy-pasted it from the talking points email.
I didn't read it with a straight face.
Neither did anyone else.
Support for Fetterman means giving aid and comfort to the party which wants to kill fracking. It does not really matter what Fetterman says on the issue, stroke or not.
Actually, with the stroke, it matters extra. There's no fighting, there'll be no plum committee assignments, there'll be no moving or persuading the party on anything. There will be no extracting what Pennsylvania wants or needs from any deal. He's not capable.
He'll be bulldozed. And he won't be able to pull a Tulsi Gabbard and peace out, he'll just do what his progressive masters demand, period.
You have to really suck to make Dr Oz look like the better choice. But he does.
Fetterman, the lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania, and Oz, a longtime daytime talk show host known for dispensing dubious medical advice
Oz's Job - daytime talk show host known for dispensing dubious medical advice
Fetterman's Job - lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania most known for????
SMDH.
It's seriously baffling how many Democratic media darlings (AOC, O'Rourke, Fetterman, Buttigieg) are people that failed upwards, or have positions for no explicable reason other than they happen to be party apparatchiks.
Fetterman didn't do anything except fuck around as town mayor for a few years, got training at Harvard (which isn't saying much these days) so he could move up, and then fucked around as LtGov. He's been a bigger lump as public official than that cyst on the back of his neck, and the only reason I can think of is that the party figured out that he'd be useful as a political avatar they could push as an "ordinary average guy," even though he's been mooching off of family members for most of his adult life.
The other thing that has happened to the Democratic Party is that a ton of state and local politicians who in the past would have been the sort of reasonable, you can live with even if you don't like them empty suits for the party were either wiped out in the 2010 and 2014 red wave massacres or were primaried by the lunatic left.
I know for a fact that in 2014 Democratic candidates at the state level were told that if they didn't toe the line on gun control that they wouldn't get any support from the national party. So, a whole bunch of state level Democrats who represented rural areas and who could have been the reasonable center of the party ended up either being primaried because their own party didn't support them or losing their elections because they ran on gun control in areas where that was a sure loser.
It is amazing how weak the Democratic Party has become. The only people who survived the Republican waves of 10 and 14 were mindless and generally useless hacks like Fetterman and Buttigieg or genuine far left lunatics like Stacy Abrams. You would think in a big state like Georgia or Pennsylvania the Democrats could come up with someone who at least looked the part to run for statewide office. Instead, they are running Abrams, Fetterman and Warnock; two lunatics and a useless hack stroke victim.
When Nancy Pelosi first became minority leader in 2002, I remember thinking that she was going to jerk the Dems so far to the left that the party would fall off the page. It says something about the state of it today that between her and AOC, Pelosi is actually the more reasonable one.
The people they're running aren't the party. They're (as red rocks said) avatars. It's been this way since at least Obama.
The left/cabal running them has so much institutional power that it simply doesn't matter how bad their candidates/officials are because voting, the constitution, and courts have no effect (see: Trump vs Biden).
I think you grossly overestimate their power.
Let’s not get cocky, now. I’d be willing to bet a fiver the red wave is coming… and it will accomplish Sweet Fanny Adams. Except maybe inheriting the third great depression and the Third World War.
(Funny side note, my phone auto capitalized Third World War. It’s already a proper noun!).
Who cares how weak your candidates when you own the media and the ballot box operations.
"Oz’s Job – daytime talk show host known for dispensing dubious medical advice"
Meaning he is not completely parroting Big Pharma
Oz seems like a shitty candidate on his own merits. What is sad is that Fetterman is so much worse and this still starts by attacking the opponent of the person the article is supposedly criticizing.
At least Oz is not a stroke addled Marxist. That alone makes him a rock star relative to Fetterman.
Most known for hoodies and tattoos.
Before the stroke, that's literally the only reason he was nationally known.
"Fetterman could be forgiven for verbal slip-ups . . . "
Total incoherence is not a 'slip-up'.
It's too bad Big Tech decided to become full-time information commissars for the Democratic party after 2016, because in the glory years of Web 2.0, Fetterman would have been memed into oblivion after that performance. There will be some stuff that comes out, sure, but not of the quality shitposting level that was common a decade ago.
Joe, you can't defend Fetterman or his handlers at all here.
https://nypost.com/2022/10/26/john-fetterman-camp-claims-captions-was-filled-with-errors-during-pennsylvania-senate-debate/
Fetterman’s camp made the allegations in a statement just after the Pennsylvania Democratic lieutenant governor’s disastrous debate performance Tuesday night, which the campaign praised.
“We are thrilled with John’s performance. He did remarkably well tonight – especially when you consider that he’s still recovering from a stroke and was working off of delayed captions filled with errors,” Fetterman communications director Joe Calvello told reporters.
Living in La-La Land, I see.
However, Nexstar Media Group, which hosted the debate, rebuked the Fetterman campaign’s claims, alleging that the Democratic candidate’s team didn’t adequately practice before the TV cameras started rolling.
“Both candidates agreed to the technical set-up for the closed captioning process weeks ago, which was implemented at the request of the Fetterman campaign. Both candidates were offered the opportunity for two full rehearsals with the same equipment used in tonight’s debate; Mr. Fetterman chose to do only one,” the statement continues.
Even the NY Post has a better story than you on this, Joe.
To be fair, there are probably a lot of things Fetterman can't explain right now.
Also, to be fair, that isn’t simply a consequence of the stroke.
He was a worthless Marxist for decades before the stroke.
"Fetterman used closed captioning to accommodate the auditory processing issues he stills suffers from."
"Despite a recent doctor's note claiming that he is "recovering well" with no diminished "cognitive ability,"
Joe contradicts Joe. Welcome to Reason, feeble minds, advertising markets.
(hint: "auditory processing issues" is evidence of "diminished cognitive ability)
The guy can't understand spoken words and needs everything typed out for him. And he is not only running for Senate, people like the author here don't see a problem with that.
Words really fail to describe how insane things have gotten.
And he did not seem like a genius before the stroke.
You need considerable rest to recover from a stroke. This race is a horrendous idea for him.
This is why we never should have stopped beating stupid hippies. This is what happens.
Too local.
You know who else is known for dispensing dubious medical advice?
Who is the CDC?
I will take government hacks for 500 Alex.
Dr. Fauci?
Dr. Walensky?
Doc Gooden?
Mets are pond scum.
The Nye Mets are my favorite squadron!
it's like a freakin' country bear jambaroo around here.
Damn you guys are fast!
That’s what she said!
Pfizer
Timothy Leary?
Hitler?
Hitler’s doctor?
Dr. Birx?
Joe, are you lying as much as Brandon? Is that your schtick now?

Maybe people should stop voting for television personalities.
Why does being a television personality make you unfit for office? Reagan was an actor and he seemed to do a pretty good job. And unless you just can't handle the dark night of mean tweets falling on America, so did Trump.
I'm not taking the bait, sorry. No matter what I say in response to that the usual suspects will descend to tell me that I do, think, want, and believe, call me a liar if I dare to disagree, and generally have a sewing circle where they talk all kinds of shit. Not giving them the opportunity.
Because your hatred of Trump has reached epic proportions. Eclipsing everything in your life except perhaps your thirst for alcohol.
Prove me wrong.
They likely should --- but if the alternative is an addled stroke victim, the TV guy might be a far better option. And I have little hope in Oz being anything more than a milquetoast dipshit.
"Maybe people should stop voting for television personalities."
Or just vote for better television personalities. The qualities that make for a good entertainer also work for a good executive front man. Charisma and the ability to inspire, to go for the obvious. Show business people are also notoriously vain and approval seeking, which is less than good, but unfortunately common to many in leadership positions.
A past as a medicine show huckster isn't a great place to start in building a great leader of men, but who knows, sometimes the office makes the man.
But enough about Ronald Reagan!
"Fetterman has auditory processing issues related to a stroke in May, ....."
Fetterman problems are not just auditory processing issues. The teleprompter did not help his cognitive problems. It wasn't that he couldn't hear the words, it was that he did not understand the meaning of the words, whether hearing them or seeing them written down.
The Senate is supposed to be a chamber of debate. Fetterman is not mentally able to participate in such debate. If elected, he would resign in a few months to "concentrate on his health and recovery" and his wife would be appointed to complete his term. That's the plan. Biden even told his wife she was going to make a "good, good senator".
Either one of the moderators from last night's debate would make a better senator than Fetterman. Is it too late to substitute one of them as the Dem candidate?
I love citing Maddow blog as a source for anything (the dubious info hyperlink). I have little doubt Oz likely gave shit advice on his show...but I would not trust Maddow if she said water was wet. Joe, try and find somebody slightly more credible. You cannot find somebody less credible than you did.
And Fetterman was abysmal. Claimed Oz did not answer a question that he very clearly and explicitly did. Kept repeating blatantly memorized (yet terrible) canned lines. Seemed unable to discuss abortion outside of "Roe v Wade". Oz, legitimately, did pretty well --- but would have been wise to just offer Fetterman all of his time to talk.
He must *surely* be able to find a better source than a news personality who has **argued in court that her words should not be found libelous because nobody would believe anything she said**.
Odd she got away but Jopes did not. Alex Jones is held to a higher standard of trust than MSNBC.
Fetterman needs help and rehabilitation, not running for office. And his wife is just plain nasty.
There were a few clips in the NBC interview taken from behind Fetterman, and which included the screen he uses, allegedly, for seeing questions typed out. But you could see that words were appearing on that screen as he was talking, answering questions. In other words, his cognitive problems are much worse than the doctor (who is also a major campaign contributor to Fetterman and the Democrats) said. His handlers are feeding him answers to read out, and he obviously has serious problems even doing that.
Oz also did not explain his flip-flop of fracking -- vividly demonstrated, in writing, by the questioners. This author does not appear to mention that point. Why?
Spoiler: He is a clinger.
Oz's original anti-fracking statement was made, he said, contingent on several on-going studies being conducted as to its health risks. Those studies eventually showed, by and large, no health risks as long as frackers used proper safety precautions. Aren't we supposed to change our mind when Science is heard from?
Knock – knock.
Who’s there?
Not John Fetterman. Not anymore.
Cry more, clinger. 😀
LOL, John Fetterman's cyst showed up with one of the weakest responses I've ever seen.
Fetterman has auditory processing issues related to a stroke in May, but still had trouble explaining why he seems to have changed his mind.
Are we absolutely sure he wasn’t just that stupid before the stroke?
Edit: I’m also going to make a somewhat bold prediction: he’ll be president in ~30-40 years and the media will pretend that there’s nothing wrong with his cognitive faculties, or they’ll just claim that anyone who points it out is some kind of “Big Meanie,” which will be the biggest insult possible by that time.
My favorite thing about Fetterman vs. Oz is that if people who did not know them saw their pictures, I bet most Democrats (and even some Republicans) would pick the gargoyle as the evil MAGA guy.
KoKo the gorilla was more articulate than Fetterman
Joe Lancaster (and the left wing moderators of the Oz/Fetterman debate) have (by citing just one previous comment) misrepresented the positions on fracking by Oz and Fetterman.
In fact, Fetterman has stated his opposition to fracking dozens of times in the past (and only began supporting fracking in the past few weeks in order to win the election), while Oz has consistently supported and advocated fracking throughout his primary and general election campaigns for US Senate.
